Two escape rates for negative eigenvalues of quantum graphs with a shrinking core

We study the negative spectrum of the Laplacian on a metric graph with general vertex matching conditions and with two length scales: a compact core whose edges have length of order a small parameter $\epsilon$, together with finitely many edges of infinite length. As $\epsilon\to0$, some negative eigenvalues may escape to $-\infty$, and we describe precisely how. There are exactly two rates of escape, $\epsilon^{-1}$ and the fractional rate $\epsilon^{-2/3}$. We determine the number of eigenvalues of each rate, together with their leading coefficients, explicitly from the vertex conditions. The analysis rests on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the graph and on an implicit Rellich-type theorem, that identifies the power-law rates of the solution branches of a nonlinear 2-parameter matrix pencil with the leading orders of a one-parameter Hermitian family.

Semigroup decay for the wave equation with unbounded damping

We study the damped wave equation with a damping coefficient which is possibly singular and unbounded at infinity. In general, zero belongs to the spectrum of the corresponding generator, which prevents a uniform (exponential) decay for the energy. However, for initial conditions in a suitable subspace, a detailed analysis of the resolvent norm for low frequencies leads to sharp polynomial time-decay rates for the solution and its energy.

Local decay and asymptotic profile for the damped wave equation in the asymptotically Euclidean setting

We prove local decay estimates for the wave equation in the asymptotically Euclidean setting. In even dimensions we go beyond the optimal decay by providing the large time asymptotic profile, given by a solution of the free wave equation. In odd dimensions, we improve the best known estimates. In particular, we get a decay rate that is better than what would be the optimal decay in even dimensions. The analysis mainly relies on a comparison of the corresponding resolvent with the resolvent of the free problem for low frequencies. Moreover, all the results hold for the damped wave equation with short range absorption index.

Magnetic Dirac operator in strips submitted to strong magnetic fields

We consider the magnetic Dirac operator on a curved strip whose boundary carries the infinite mass boundary condition. When the magnetic field is large, we provide the reader with accurate estimates of the essential and discrete spectra. In particular, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the discrete spectrum is non-empty.

A minimal mass blow-up solution on a nonlinear quantum star graph

We construct a finite-time blow-up solution to the mass-critical focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on a metric star graph with an arbitrary number of edges. We show that all solutions are global if their mass is smaller than an explicit constant, called "minimal mass". We then construct a solution with minimal mass and arbitrary energy, which blows up in finite time at the vertex of the star graph. The blow-up profile and blow-up speed are explicitly characterized. The main novelty of the paper is the construction of the blow-up profile in time-dependent domains of singularly perturbed Laplacians.

Null-controllability properties of the generalized two-dimensional Baouendi-Grushin equation with non-rectangular control sets

We consider the null-controllability problem for the generalized Baouendi-Grushin equation $(\partial_t - \partial_x^2 - q(x)^2\partial_y^2)f = 1_\omega u$ on a rectangular domain. Sharp controllability results already exist when the control domain $\omega$ is a vertical strip, or when $q(x) = x$. In this article, we provide upper and lower bounds for the minimal time of null-controllability for general $q$ and non-rectangular control region $\omega$. In some geometries for $\omega$, the upper bound and the lower bound are equal, in which case, we know the exact value of the minimal time of null-controllability. Our proof relies on several tools: known results when $\omega$ is a vertical strip and cutoff arguments for the upper bound of the minimal time of null-controllability; spectral analysis of the Schr\"odinger operator $-\partial_x^2 + \nu^2 q(x)^2$ when $\Re(\nu)>0$, pseudo-differential-type operators on polynomials and Runge's theorem for the lower bound.

Spectrum of the wave equation with Dirac damping on a non-compact star graph

We consider the wave equation on non-compact star graphs, subject to a distributional damping defined through a Robin-type vertex condition with complex coupling. It is shown that the non-self-adjoint generator of the evolution problem admits an abrupt change in its spectral properties for a special coupling related to the number of graph edges. As an application, we show that the evolution problem is highly unstable for the critical couplings. The relationship with the Dirac equation in non-relativistic quantum mechanics is also mentioned.

Energy decay for a system of Schr{\"o}dinger equations in a wave guide

We prove exponential decay for a system of two Schr{\"o}dinger equations in a wave guide, with coupling and damping at the boundary. This relies on the spectral analysis of the corresponding coupled Schr{\"o}dinger operator on the one-dimensional cross section. We show in particular that we have a spectral gap and that the corresponding generalized eigenfunctions form a Riesz basis.

Low frequency asymptotics and local energy decay for the Schr{\"o}dinger equation

We prove low frequency resolvent estimates and local energy decay for the Schr{\"o}dinger equation in an asymptotically Euclidean setting. More precisely, we go beyond the optimal estimates by comparing the resolvent of the perturbed Schr{\"o}dinger operator with the resolvent of the free Laplacian. This gives the leading term for the developpement of this resolvent when the spectral parameter is close to 0. For this, we show in particular how we can apply the usual commutators method for generalized resolvents and simultaneously for different operators. Finally, we deduce similar results for the large time asymptotics of the corresponding evolution problem.

Critical time for the observability of Kolmogorov-type equations

This paper is devoted to the observability of a class of two-dimensional Kolmogorov-type equations presenting a quadratic degeneracy. We give lower and upper bounds for the critical time. These bounds coincide in symmetric settings, giving a sharp result in these cases. The proof is based on Carleman estimates and on the spectral properties of a family of non-selfadjoint Schr\"odinger operators, in particular the localization of the first eigenvalue and Agmon type estimates for the corresponding eigenfunctions.

Spectrum of a non-selfadjoint quantum star graph

We study the spectrum of a quantum star graph with a non-selfadjoint Robin condition at the central vertex. We first prove that, in the high frequency limit, the spectrum of the Robin Laplacian is close to the usual spectrum corresponding to the Kirchhoff condition. Then, we describe more precisely the asymptotics of the difference in terms of the Barra-Gaspard measure of the graph. This measure depends on the arithmetic properties of the lengths of the edges. As a by-product, this analysis provides a Weyl Law for non-selfadjoint quantum star graphs and it gives the asymptotic behaviour of the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues.

Stability of Standing Waves for a Nonlinear Klein-Gordon Equation with Delta Potentials

In this paper, we study local well-posedness and orbital stability of standing waves for a singularly perturbed one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. We first establish local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem by a fixed point argument. Unlike the unperturbed case, a noteworthy difficulty here arises from the possible non-unitarity of the semigroup generating the corresponding linear evolution. We then show that the equation is Hamiltonian and we establish several stability/instability results for its standing waves. Our analysis relies on a detailed study of the spectral properties of the linearization of the equation, and on the well-known 'slope condition' for orbital stability.

Energy decay for the Klein-Gordon equation with highly oscillating damping

We consider the free Klein-Gordon equation with periodic damping. We show on this simple model that if the usual geometric condition holds then the decay of the energy is uniform with respect to the oscillations of the damping, and in particular the size of the derivatives do not play any role. We also show that without geometric condition the polynomial decay of the energy is even slightly better for a highly oscillating damping. To prove these estimates we provide a parameter dependent version of well known results of semigroup theory.

Energy Decay in a Wave Guide with Dissipation at Infinity

We prove local and global energy decay for the wave equation in a wave guide with damping at infinity. More precisely, the absorption index is assumed to converge slowly to a positive constant, and we obtain the diffusive phenomenon typical for the contribution of low frequencies when the damping is effective at infinity. On the other hand, the usual Geometric Control Condition is not necessarily satisfied so we may have a loss of regularity for the contribution of high frequencies. Since our results are new even in the Euclidean space, we also state a similar result in this case.

Energy decay and diffusion phenomenon for the asymptotically periodic damped wave equation

We prove local and global energy decay for the asymptotically periodic damped wave equation on the Euclidean space. Since the behavior of high frequencies is already mostly understood, this paper is mainly about the contribution of low frequencies. We show in particular that the damped wave behaves like a solution of a heat equation which depends on the H-limit of the metric and the mean value of the absorption index.

Reduction of dimension as a consequence of norm-resolvent convergence and applications

This paper is devoted to dimensional reductions via the norm resolvent convergence. We derive explicit bounds on the resolvent difference as well as spectral asymptotics. The efficiency of our abstract tool is demonstrated by its application on seemingly different PDE problems from various areas of mathematical physics; all are analysed in a unified manner now, known results are recovered and new ones established.
