Components of strata of k-differentials and their orbit closures

We obtain a complete classification of components of strata of holomorphic and meromorphic k-differentials. We show that, when genus is at least two and outside of explicit exceptions when k < 4, there is one primitive nonhyperelliptic component unless k is odd and all singularities have even order, in which case there are two distinguished by their Arf invariant. The exceptions include new sporadic components of strata of cubic differentials. Our work provides a new proof of earlier results of Kontsevich-Zorich, Boissy, Lanneau, and Chen-Gendron when k = 1, 2. The proofs are almost purely algebraic, relying on the multiscale compactification of Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Moller. This answers a question of Chen-Yu. We also show that for any component of a stratum of finite area $k$-differentials of positive genus, the smallest GL(2,R)-orbit closure containing all of its holonomy covers is as big as possible. This answers the positive genus analogue of a "long term goal" of Mirzakhani-Wright. The result also holds in genus zero strata that contain surfaces with Euclidean cylinders, thus addressing infinitely many cases of the original question of Mirzakhani-Wright.

Counting geodesics on prime-order $k$-differentials

We determine weak asymptotics of counting functions on generic surfaces in a component of a stratum of $k$-differentials when $k$ is prime and genus is greater than $2$. In order to do so, we classify the $GL^+(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closure of holonomy covers of components and apply Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi generalized to translation surfaces. We show that the $GL^+(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closure of these holonomy covers is generically a component of a stratum of translation surfaces or a hyperelliptic locus therein.

Realizing pairs of multicurves as cylinders on translation surfaces

Any pair of intersecting cylinders on a translation surface is "coherent," in that the geometric and algebraic intersection numbers of their core curves are equal (up to sign). In this paper, we investigate when a pair of multicurves can be simultaneously realized as the core curves of cylinders on some translation surface. Our main tools are surface topology and the "flat grafting" deformation introduced by Ser-Wei Fu.

A degree theorem for the simplicial closure of Auter space

The degree of a based graph is the number of essential nonbasepoint vertices after generic perturbation. Hatcher--Vogtmann's degree theorem states that the subcomplex of Auter space of graphs of degree at most d is (d-1)-connected. We extend the definition of degree to the simplicial closure of Auter space and prove a version of Hatcher--Vogtmann's result in this context.
