A projective Dirac operator on $\mathbb{C}P^n$ and extended SUSY

We construct a universal spin$_c$ Dirac operator on $\mathbb{C}P^n$ built by projecting $su(n+1)$ left actions and prove its equivalence to the standard right action Dirac operator on $\mathbb{C}P^n$. The eigenvalue problem is solved and the spinor space constructed thereof, showing that the proposed Dirac operator is universal, changing only its domain for different spin$_c$ structures. Explicit expressions for the chirality and the eigenspinors are also found and consistency with the index theorem is established. Also, the extended $\mathcal{N} =2$ supersymmetry algebra is realised through the Dirac operator and its companion supercharge, and an expression for the superpotential of any spin$_c$ connection on $\mathbb{C}P^n$ is found and generalised to any spin coset manifold $G/H$ with $G,H$ compact, connected, and $G$ semisimple. The $R$-symmetry of this superalgebra is found to be equivalent to the $U(1)$ holonomy of the spin$_c$ connection.

Scalar and Spinor Field Actions on Fuzzy $S^4$: fuzzy $CP^3$ as a $S^2_F$ bundle over $S^4_F$

We present a manifestly Spin(5) invariant construction of squashed fuzzy $CP^3$ as a fuzzy $S^2$ bundle over fuzzy $S^4$. We develop the necessary projectors and exhibit the squashing in terms of the radii of the $S^2$ and $S^4$. Our analysis allows us give both scalar and spinor fuzzy action functionals whose low lying modes are truncated versions of those of a commutative $S^4$.

Fuzzy Scalar Field Theories: Numerical and Analytical Investigations

This thesis is devoted to the study of Quantum Field Theories (QFT) on fuzzy spaces. Fuzzy spaces are approximations to the algebra of functions of a continuous space by a finite matrix algebra. In the limit of infinitely large matrices the formulation is exact. An attractive feature of this approach is that it transparently shows how the geometrical properties of the continuous space are preserved. In the study of the non-perturbative regime of QFT, fuzzy spaces provide a possible alternative to the lattice as a regularisation method. The thesis is divided into two parts. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of a $λϕ^4$ theory on a 3-dimensional Euclidean space. We identify the phase diagram of this model. In addition to the usual disordered and uniform ordered phases we find a third phase of non-uniform ordering. This indicates the existence of the phenomenon called UV-IR mixing in the strong coupling regime. Second we present a geometrical analysis of the scalar field theory on a 4-dimensional fuzzy sphere, S4_F. Nevertheless a fuzzy version of S4 cannot be achieved by quantisation of the classical space. The problem is circumvented by defining a scalar theory on a larger space, CP3 which is 6-dimensional. It includes degrees of freedom related to S^4 plus others beyond S4. Those extra degrees of freedom are dynamically suppressed through a probabilistic method. The analysis of the geometrical structures allows us to interpret this procedure as a Kaluza-Klein reduction of CP3 to S4.

Probing the fuzzy sphere regularisation in simulations of the 3d λϕ^4 model

We regularise the 3d λϕ^4 model by discretising the Euclidean time and representing the spatial part on a fuzzy sphere. The latter involves a truncated expansion of the field in spherical harmonics. This yields a numerically tractable formulation, which constitutes an unconventional alternative to the lattice. In contrast to the 2d version, the radius R plays an independent rôle. We explore the phase diagram in terms of R and the cutoff, as well as the parameters m^2 and λ. Thus we identify the phases of disorder, uniform order and non-uniform order. We compare the result to the phase diagrams of the 3d model on a non-commutative torus, and of the 2d model on a fuzzy sphere. Our data at strong coupling reproduce accurately the behaviour of a matrix chain, which corresponds to the c=1-model in string theory. This observation enables a conjecture about the thermodynamic limit.

Field Theory Simulations on a Fuzzy Sphere - an Alternative to the Lattice

We explore a new way to simulate quantum field theory, without introducing a spatial lattice. As a pilot study we apply this method to the 3d λϕ^4 model. The regularisation consists of a fuzzy sphere with radius R for the two spatial directions, plus a discrete Euclidean time. The fuzzy sphere approximates the algebra of functions of the sphere with a matrix algebra, and the scalar field is represented by a Hermitian N x N matrix at each time site. We evaluate the phase diagram, where we find a disordered phase and an ordered regime, which splits into phases of uniform and non-uniform order. We discuss the behaviour of the model in different limits of large N and R, which lead to a commutative or to a non-commutative λϕ^4 model in flat space.

Scalar Field Theory on Fuzzy S^4

Scalar fields are studied on fuzzy $S^4$ and a solution is found for the elimination of the unwanted degrees of freedom that occur in the model. The resulting theory can be interpreted as a Kaluza-Klein reduction of CP^3 to S^4 in the fuzzy context.
