Analysis of a one dimensional energy dissipating free boundary model with nonlinear boundary conditions. Existence of weak solutions

This work is part of a general study on the long-term safety of the geological repository of nuclear wastes. A diffusion equation with a moving free boundary in one dimension is introduced and studied. The model describes some mechanisms involved in corrosion processes at the surface of carbon steel canisters in contact with a claystone formation. The main objective of the paper is to prove the existence of weak solutions to the problem which are maximal in time. For this, a time semidiscrete minimizing movements scheme based on a Wasserstein-like distance is introduced. The existence of solutions to the scheme is proved. Then, using a priori estimates, it is shown that as the time step goes to zero these solutions converge up to extraction towards a maximal weak solution to the free boundary model.

On the square-root approximation finite volume scheme for nonlinear drift-diffusion equations

We study a finite volume scheme for the approximation of the solution to convection diffusion equations with nonlinear convection and Robin boundary conditions. The scheme builds on the interpretation of such a continuous equation as the hydrodynamic limit of some simple exclusion jump process. We show that the scheme admits a unique discrete solution, that the natural bounds on the solution are preserved, and that it encodes the second principle of thermodynamics in the sense that some free energy is dissipated along time. The convergence of the scheme is then rigorously established thanks to compactness arguments. Numerical simulations are finally provided, highlighting the overall good behavior of the scheme.

Mathematical analysis of a thermodynamically consistent reduced model for iron corrosion

We are interested in a reduced model for corrosion of iron, in which ferric cations and electrons evolve in a fixed oxide layer subject to a self-consistent electrostatic potential. Reactions at the boundaries are modeled thanks to Butler-Volmer formulas, whereas the boundary conditions on the electrostatic potential model capacitors located at the interfaces between the materials. Our model takes inspiration in existing papers, to which we bring slight modifications in order to make it consistent with thermodynamics and its second principle. Building on a free energy estimate, we establish the global in time existence of a solution to the problem without any restriction on the physical parameters, in opposition to previous works. The proof further relies on uniform estimates on the chemical potentials that are obtained thanks to Moser iterations. Numerical illustrations are finally provided to highlight the similarities and the differences between our new model and the one previously studied in the literature.

Sweeping process by prox-regular sets in Riemannian Hilbert manifolds

In this paper, we deal with sweeping processes on (possibly infinite-dimensional) Riemannian Hilbert manifolds. We extend the useful notions (proximal normal cone, prox-regularity) already defined in the setting of a Hilbert space to the framework of such manifolds. Especially we introduce the concept of local prox-regularity of a closed subset in accordance with the geometrical features of the ambient manifold and we check that this regularity implies a property of hypomonotonicity for the proximal normal cone. Moreover we show that the metric projection onto a locally prox-regular set is single-valued in its neighborhood. Then under some assumptions, we prove the well-posedness of perturbed sweeping processes by locally prox-regular sets.

A posteriori error estimates for a finite element approximation of transmission problems with sign changing coefficients

We perform the a posteriori error analysis of residual type of a transmission problem with sign changing coefficients. According to [6] if the contrast is large enough, the continuous problem can be transformed into a coercive one. We further show that a similar property holds for the discrete problem for any regular meshes, extending the framework from [6]. The reliability and efficiency of the proposed estimator is confirmed by some numerical tests.

Existence of solutions for second-order differential inclusions involving proximal normal cones

In this work, we prove global existence of solutions for second order differential problems in a general framework. More precisely, we consider second order differential inclusions involving proximal normal cone to a set-valued map. This set-valued map is supposed to take admissible values (so in particular uniformly prox-regular values, which may be non-smooth and non-convex). Moreover we require the solution to satisfy an impact law, appearing in the description of mechanical systems with inelastic shocks.

Stochastic perturbation of sweeping process and a convergence result for an associated numerical scheme

Here we present well-posedness results for first order stochastic differential inclusions, more precisely for sweeping process with a stochastic perturbation. These results are provided in combining both deterministic sweeping process theory and methods concerning the reflection of a Brownian motion. In addition, we prove convergence results for a Euler scheme, discretizing theses stochastic differential inclusions.

Numerical scheme for a whole class of sweeping process

The aim of this paper is to study a whole class of first order differential inclusions, which fit into the framework of perturbed sweeping process by uniformly prox-regular sets. After obtaining well-posedness results, we propose a numerical scheme based on a prediction-correction algorithm and we prove its convergence. Finally we apply these results to a problem coming from modelling of crowd motion.

Existence of sweeping process in Banach spaces under directional prox-regularity

This paper is devoted to weaken "classical" assumptions and give new arguments to prove existence of sweeping process (associated to the proximal normal cone of sets). Mainly we define the concept of a "directional prox-regularity" and give assumptions about a Banach space to insure the existence of such sweeping process (which permit to generalize the existing results requiring a Hilbertian structure).

A discrete contact model for crowd motion

The aim of this paper is to develop a crowd motion model designed to handle highly packed situations. The model we propose rests on two principles: We first define a spontaneous velocity which corresponds to the velocity each individual would like to have in the absence of other people; The actual velocity is then computed as the projection of the spontaneous velocity onto the set of admissible velocities (i.e. velocities which do not violate the non-overlapping constraint). We describe here the underlying mathematical framework, and we explain how recent results by J.F. Edmond and L. Thibault on the sweeping process by uniformly prox-regular sets can be adapted to handle this situation in terms of well-posedness. We propose a numerical scheme for this contact dynamics model, based on a prediction-correction algorithm. Numerical illustrations are finally presented and discussed.
