Classical emergence of the quantum-backreacted BTZ black hole from exponential electrodynamics

In this work, we revisit a recently reported generalization of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole arising in New Massive Gravity sourced by the quantum fluctuations of scalar matter, now examined through the lens of a purely classical framework. We show that the same geometry, distinguished by its logarithmic asymptotic structure, emerges as the unique static solution of Einstein gravity coupled to an exponential nonlinear electrodynamics. We trace the origin of this correspondence and prove that this geometry belongs to a unique class of metrics constituting the intersection of the moduli spaces of the static and circularly symmetric sectors of the two theories, thereby revealing a dynamical equivalence between them. An explicit mapping is established between the global charges of the nonlinearly charged black holes and the parameters governing the quantum backreaction in New Massive Gravity, allowing for a natural reinterpretation of the quantum imprints in terms of classical charges. A detailed analysis of the horizon structure of these spacetimes is presented. In addition, the full thermodynamics of the more general configurations is constructed using the Iyer-Wald formalism, from which we derive the first law and the associated Smarr relation. Altogether, our results provide a classical realization of a semiclassical spacetime and point toward a broader correspondence between higher-curvature corrections in quantum gravity and nonlinear effects in self-gravitating electrodynamics in three dimensions.

Transport coefficients of charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes with arbitrary topology

In this study, we present a novel family of exact black hole solutions constructed in the context of five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. These solutions add a non-linear charge to the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli-like configurations known to exist with arbitrary Thurston horizon geometry. We establish constraints on the parameter space defining physically viable black holes, aligning with the standard energy conditions. An explicit proof of the first law of thermodynamics within our scenario is provided. We also employ holographic techniques to characterize the DC conductivities for the distinct horizon geometries, identifying a critical temperature indicative of phase transitions and exploring pertinent limits.

Effects of background rotation and anisotropy in the holographic description of type-II superconductors

The present work concerns the detailed construction of a holographic model for a type-II s-wave superconductor defined on a 5-dimensional anisotropic rotating black hole. We examine the role of rotation and anisotropy on the properties of the superconductor model focusing on the condensate and the AC conductivity, for which we obtain closed formulas, using both analytical and numerical methods. The results reveal that the rotation is responsible for the appearance of a peak and for introducing an exponentially vanishing behavior in the high-frequency limit of the real component of the AC conductivity. Such a behavior aligns with that observed in high-temperature superconductor models and experiments, where the peak and vanishing behavior result from quasiparticle damping, suggesting a relation between the {\it rotation of a black hole} and {\it quasiparticle damping effects} due to impurities or defects in a superconducting material. This relation supplements the holographic dictionary of the gravity/Condensed Matter Theory correspondence. In addition, we provide a detailed construction of the vortex lattice presented in arXiv:2208.05988 and study its behavior as a function of an external uniform magnetic field. Once again, it is shown that the vortex lattice can be continuously deformed along with a change in the vortex population by virtue of the magnetic field, providing a promising avenue for holographically modeling the vortex lattice deformations observed in experimental studies with superconducting materials. As a concrete example, we describe both the vortex lattice deformation and the increment of the vortex population under the action of an external magnetic field in the LiFeAs type-II superconductor. These effects supplement those previously found for the FeSe type-II superconductor studied in arXiv:2208.05988.

Constraint characterization and degree of freedom counting in Lagrangian field theory

We present a Lagrangian approach to counting degrees of freedom in first-order field theories. The emphasis is on the systematic attainment of a complete set of constraints. In particular, we provide the first comprehensive procedure to ensure the functional independence of all constraints and discuss in detail the possible closures of the constraint algorithm. We argue degrees of freedom can but need not correspond to physical modes. The appendix comprises fully worked out, physically relevant examples of varying complexity.

Vortex structure deformation of rotating Lifshitz Holographic Superconductors

We construct a type-II holographic superconductor from an anisotropic rotating background metric. We study the effects of the magnetic field on the vortex structure, including continuous deformations both from triangular to square lattices or vice versa. Our holographic model reproduces known experimental vortex lattice deformations and the increment of the vortex population by increasing the external magnetic field.

Anisotropic Schrödinger black holes with hyperscaling-violation

We investigate novel exact solutions to an Einstein-Maxwell theory non-minimally coupled to a self-interacting dilaton-like scalar. Extending the results of arXiv: 2012.13412 and 2110.04445, we report three families of exact configurations over a non-relativistic Schrödinger background with both, arbitrary dynamical critical exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violating parameter $θ$. Concretely, we provide field configurations with hyperscaling violation which are asymptotically Schrödinger spaces. Our solutions correspond to three kinds: a zero-temperature background, a naked singularity and, more interestingly, a family of black holes. To the later, we construct the corresponding Carter-Penrose diagram with a view to understand their causal structure given the non-standard background. We show that a non-trivial hyperscaling violation parameter $θ$ is necessary in order to support a real non-constant dilaton field in the configuration. We explore how the relation between the hyperscaling violation parameter and the critical dynamical exponent determine, in combination with the spacetime dimension, the kinematic aspects of the fields. We provide a thorough study of the thermodynamics including the quasi-local computation of charges, the verification of the first law and arguments concerning the stability. Lastly, we explore the effects in the thermodynamics from varying the rich parameter space. We pay special attention in comparing the qualitative behavior of the thermodynamics scalar-free solutions and the ones with a nontrivial dialton.

Scalarization-like mechanism through spacetime anisotropic scaling symmetry

We present a new family of exact black hole configurations, which is a solution to a generalized Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton setup in arbitrary dimension. These solutions are asymptotically Lifshitz for any dynamical critical exponent $z\geq 1$. It turns out that the existence of a nontrivial scalar field is a direct consequence of breaking the spacetime isotropic scaling symmetry. This black hole family accepts various interesting limits that link it to well-known solutions in both the isotropic and anisotropic cases. We study the thermodynamics of these field configurations showing that the first law is satisfied and providing the corresponding Smarr formula, both of these relations account for an electric contribution. Furthermore, we show that for a certain parameter region, the anisotropic field configuration with a nonzero scalar field is thermodynamically preferred. This observation, together with a direct verification of the so-called scalarization conditions, suggest that the emergence of the dilaton field is due to a mechanism similar to spontaneous scalarization.

A Lagrangian constraint analysis of first order classical field theories with an application to gravity

We present a method that is optimized to explicitly obtain all the constraints and thereby count the propagating degrees of freedom in (almost all) manifestly first order classical field theories. Our proposal uses as its only inputs a Lagrangian density and the identification of the a priori independent field variables it depends on. This coordinate-dependent, purely Lagrangian approach is complementary to and in perfect agreement with the related vast literature. Besides, generally overlooked technical challenges and problems derived from an incomplete analysis are addressed in detail. The theoretical framework is minutely illustrated in the Maxwell, Proca and Palatini theories for all finite $d\geq 2$ spacetime dimensions. Our novel analysis of Palatini gravity constitutes a noteworthy set of results on its own. In particular, its computational simplicity is visible, as compared to previous Hamiltonian studies. We argue for the potential value of both the method and the given examples in the context of generalized Proca and their coupling to gravity. The possibilities of the method are not exhausted by this concrete proposal.

The complete theory of Maxwell and Proca fields

We present the most general ghost-free classical Lagrangian containing first-order derivatives and describing interacting real Abelian spin-one fields on Minkowski spacetime. We study both massive Proca and massless Maxwell fields and allow for a non-linear realization of mass, in the form of derivative self-interactions. Within this context, our construction notoriously extends the existing literature, which is limited to the case of a single Proca field and to multiple interacting Proca fields in the presence of a global rotational symmetry. In the limit of a single Proca field, we reproduce the known healthy interaction terms. We provide the necessary and sufficient conditions to ensure ghost-freedom in any multi-field setup. We observe that, in general, the said conditions are not satisfied by the rotationally symmetric multi-Proca interactions suggested so far, which implies that they propagate ghosts. Our theory admits a plethora of applications in a wide range of subjects. For illustrative purposes, we provide concrete proposals in holographic condensed matter and black hole physics.

The Maxwell-Proca theory: definition and construction

We present a systematic construction of the most general first order Lagrangian describing an arbitrary number of interacting Maxwell and Proca fields on Minkowski spacetime. To this aim, we first formalize the notion of a Proca field, in analogy to the well known Maxwell field. Our definition allows for a non-linear realization of the Proca mass, in the form of derivative self-interactions. Consequently, we consider so-called generalized Proca/vector Galileons. We explicitly demonstrate the ghost-freedom of this complete Maxwell-Proca theory by obtaining its constraint algebra. We find that, when multiple Proca fields are present, their interactions must fulfill non-trivial differential relations in order to ensure the propagation of the correct number of degrees of freedom. These relations had so far been overlooked, which means previous multi-Proca proposals generically contain ghosts. This is a companion paper to arXiv:1905.06968 [hep-th]. It puts on a solid footing the theory there introduced.

Exact ghost-free bigravitational waves

We study the propagation of exact gravitational waves in the ghost-free bimetric theory. Our focus is on type N spacetimes compatible with the cosmological constants provided by the bigravity interaction potential, and particularly in the single class known by allowing at least a Killing symmetry: the AdS waves. They have the advantage of being represented by a generalized Kerr-Schild transformation from AdS spacetime. This means a notorious simplification in bigravity by allowing to straightforwardly compute any power of its interaction square root matrix, opening the door to explore physically meaningful exact configurations. For these exact gravitational waves the complex dynamical structure of bigravity decomposes into elementary exact massless or massive excitations propagating on AdS. We use a complexified formulation of the Euler-Darboux equations to provide for the first time the general solutions to the massive version of the Siklos equation which rules the resulting AdS-waves dynamics, using an integral representation originally due to Poisson. Inspired in this progress we tackle the subtle problem on how matter couples to bigravity and concretely if this occurs through a composite metric, which is hard to handle in a general setting. Surprisingly, the Kerr-Schild ansatz brings again a huge simplification in how the related energy-momentum tensors are calculated. This allows us to explicitly characterize AdS waves supported in one case by a massless free scalar field and by a wavefront-homogeneous Maxwell field in another. Considering the most general allowed Maxwell source instead is a highly nontrivial task, that we accomplish by exploiting again the complexified Euler-Darboux description and taking advantage of the classical Riemann method. In fact, this allow us to find at the end the most general configurations for any matter source.

(Super-)renormalizably dressed black holes

Black holes supported by self-interacting conformal scalar fields can be considered as renormalizably dressed since the conformal potential is nothing but the top power-counting renormalizable self-interaction in the relevant dimension. On the other hand, potentials defined by powers which are lower than the conformal one are also phenomenologically relevant since they are in fact super-renormalizable. In this work we provide a new map that allows to build black holes dressed with all the (super-)renormalizable contributions starting from known conformal seeds. We explicitly construct several new examples of these solutions in dimensions $D=3$ and $D=4$, including not only stationary configurations but also time-dependent ones.

Rotating (A)dS black holes in bigravity

In this paper we explore the advantage of using the Kerr-Schild Ansatz in the search of analytic configurations to bigravity. It turns out that it plays a crucial role by providing means to straightforwardly calculate the square root matrix encoding the interaction terms between both gravities. We rederive in this spirit the Babichev-Fabbri family of asymptotically flat rotating black holes with the aid of an emerging circularity theorem. Taking into account that the interaction terms contain by default two cosmological constants, we repeat our approach starting from the more natural seeds for the Kerr-Schild Ansatz in this context: the (A)dS spacetimes. As result, we show that a couple of Kerr-(A)dS black holes constitute an exact solution to ghost free bigravity. These black holes share the same angular momentum and (A)dS radius but their masses are not constrained to be equal, similarly to the asymptotically flat case.
