Semiclassical relativistic stars

We present strong evidence that semiclassical gravity can give place to self-consistent ultracompact stars beyond the Buchdahl limit. We integrate the semiclassical equations of (spherically symmetric) stellar equilibrium for a constant-density classical fluid. The semiclassical contribution is modelled by a quantum massless scalar field in the only static vacuum state compatible with asymptotic flatness (Boulware vacuum). The Renormalized Stress-Energy Tensor (RSET) is firstly approximated by the analytic Polyakov approximation. This already reveals a crucial difference with respect to purely classical solutions: stars with compactness close to that of a black hole exhibit bounded pressures and curvatures up to a very small central core compared with the star radius. This suggests that a more refined approximation to the RSET at the core may give rise to strictly regular configurations. Following this suggestion, we prove that a minimal deformation of the Polyakov approximation inside the central core is sufficient to produce regular ultracompact stellar configurations.

Breaking Buchdahl: ultracompact stars in semiclassical gravity

The semiclassical approximation takes into account the gravitational contribution of zero-point energies. We model this contribution via the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a massless scalar field, which we compute in a cutoff-regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. When the field is in the Boulware vacuum state (the natural vacuum for stellar geometries), the RSET works in favor of violating the Buchdahl compactness limit. We review the family of classical constant-density stellar solutions, paying particular attention to the notion of criticality -- the presence of offsets in the mass function -- and use it as a warm up for the analysis of the semiclassical set of solutions. For stars that surpass Buchdahl limit by far, the critical solution has an irregular pressure. This divergence in pressure moves inward by introducing a negative offset in the mass. In the semiclassical theory we find something rather different, namely that the critical configuration already displays a pressure that diverges exactly at the center of the structure. This drastic difference between the classical and semiclassical space of solutions suggests that semiclassical gravity could potentially allow for the existence of ultracompact stellar objects.

Semiclassical constant-density spheres in a regularized Polyakov approximation

We provide an exhaustive analysis of the complete set of solutions of the equations of stellar equilibrium under semiclassical effects. As classical matter we use a perfect fluid of constant density; as the semiclassical source we use the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in the Boulware vacuum (the only vacuum consistent with asymptotic flatness and staticity). For the RSET we use a regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. We present a complete catalogue of the semiclassical self-consistent solutions which incorporates regular as well as singular solutions, showing that the semiclassical corrections are highly relevant in scenarios of high compactness. Semiclassical corrections allow the existence of ultra-compact equilibrium configurations which have bounded pressures and masses up to a central core of Planckian radius, precisely where the regularized Polyakov approximation is not accurate. Our analysis strongly suggests the absence of a Buchdahl limit in semiclasical gravity, while indicating that the regularized Polyakov approximation used here must be improved to describe equilibrium configurations of arbitrary compactness that remain regular at the center of spherical symmetry.

Inversion of statistics and thermalization in the Unruh effect

We derive a master equation for the reduced density matrix of a uniformly accelerating quantum detector in arbitrary dimensions, generically coupled to a field initially in its vacuum state, and analyze its late time regime. We find that such density matrix asymptotically reaches a Gibbs state. The particularities of its evolution towards this state are encoded in the response function, which depends on the dimension, the properties of the fields, and the specific coupling to them. We also compare this situation with the thermalization of a static detector immersed in a thermal field state, pinpointing the differences between both scenarios. In particular, we analyze the role of the response function and its effect on the evolution of the detector towards equilibrium. Furthermore, we explore the consequences of the well-known statistics inversion of the response function of an Unruh-DeWitt detector linearly coupled to a free scalar field in odd spacetime dimensions. This allows us to specify in which sense accelerated detectors in Minkowski vacuum behave as static detectors in a thermal bath and in which sense they do not.

Vacuum semiclassical gravity does not leave space for safe singularities

General relativity predicts its own demise at singularities, but also appears to conveniently shield itself from the catastrophic consequences of such singularities, making them safe. For instance, if strong cosmic censorship were ultimately satisfied, spacetime singularities, although present, would not pose any practical problems to predictability. Here we argue that under semiclassical effects the situation should be rather different: the potential singularities which could appear in the theory will generically affect predictability and so one will be forced to analyse whether there is a way to regularise them. For these possible regularisations, the presence and behaviour of matter during gravitational collapse and stabilisation into new structures will play a key role. First we show that the static semiclassical counterparts to the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström geometries have singularities which are no longer hidden behind horizons. Then we argue that in dynamical scenarios of formation and evaporation of black holes, we are left with only three possible outcomes which could avoid singularities and eventual predictability issues. We briefly analyse the viability of each one of them within semiclassical gravity, and discuss the expected characteristic timescales of their evolution.

Reissner-Nordström geometry counterpart in semiclassical gravity

We compute the Renormalized Stress-Energy Tensor (RSET) of a massless minimally coupled scalar field in the Regularized Polyakov approximation, as well as its backreaction, on the classical Reissner-Nordström spacetime. The complete set of solutions of the semiclassical self-consistent equations is obtained and compared with the classical counterparts. The semiclassical Reissner-Nordström family involves three kinds of geometries that depend on the charge-to-mass ratio of the spacetime. In the under-charged regime, the geometry has its external horizon replaced by a wormhole neck that leads to a singular asymptotic region at finite proper distance. The over-charged regime reveals a naked singularity coated by a cloud of (infinite) mass coming from the quantized field. In between both behaviours there is a separatrix solution reminiscent of the extremal black hole classical geometry. As the RSET over an extremal horizon is finite, the semiclassical backreaction does not get rid of the horizon. Nonetheless, we show that the resulting horizon is singular.

Inconsistencies in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We attempt to clarify several aspects concerning the recently presented four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We argue that the limiting procedure outlined in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)] generally involves ill-defined terms in the four dimensional field equations. Potential ways to circumvent this issue are discussed, alongside some remarks regarding specific solutions of the theory. We prove that, although linear perturbations are well behaved around maximally symmetric backgrounds, the equations for second-order perturbations are ill-defined even around a Minkowskian background. Additionally, we perform a detailed analysis of the spherically symmetric solutions, and find that the central curvature singularity can be reached within a finite proper time.

Schwarzschild geometry counterpart in semiclassical gravity

We investigate the effects of vacuum polarization on vacuum static spherically-symmetric spacetimes. We start from the Polyakov approximation to the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a minimally coupled massless scalar field. This RSET is not regular at $r=0$, so we define a regularized version of the Polyakov RSET. Using this Regularized RSET, and under the previous symmetry assumptions, we find all the solutions to the semiclassical field equations in vacuum. The resulting counterpart to the Schwarzschild classical geometry substitutes the presence of an event horizon by a wormhole throat that connects an external asymptotically flat region with an internal asymptotic region possessing a naked singularity: there are no semiclassical vacuum solutions with well-defined Cauchy surfaces. We also show that the Regularized Polyakov RSET allows for wormhole geometries of arbitrarily small throat radius. This analysis paves the way to future investigations of proper stellar configurations with an internal non-vacuum region.
