Convex envelopes on Trees

We introduce two notions of convexity for an infinite regular tree. For these two notions we show that given a continuous boundary datum there exists a unique convex envelope on the tree and characterize the equation that this envelope satisfies. We also relate the equation with two versions of the Laplacian on the tree. Moreover, for a function defined on the tree, the convex envelope turns out to be the solution to the obstacle problem for this equation.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps on Trees

In this paper we study the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for solutions to mean value formulas on trees. We give two alternative definition of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. For the first definition (that involves the product of a "gradient" with a "normal vector" and for a linear mean value formula on the directed tree (taking into account only the successors of a given node) we obtain that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is given by $g\mapsto cg'$ (here $c$ is an explicit constant). Notice that this is a local operator of order one. We also consider linear undirected mean value formulas (taking into account not only the successors but the ancestor and the successors of a given node) and prove a similar result. For this kind of mean value formula we include some existence and uniqueness results for the associated Dirichlet problem. Finally, we give an alternative definition of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (taking into account differences along a given branch of the tree). With this alternative definition, for a certain range of parameters, we obtain that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is given by a nonlocal operator (as happens for the classical Laplacian in the Euclidean space).

Nonlocal diffusion equations with dynamical boundary conditions

In this paper we study nonlocal problems that are analogous to the local ones given by the Laplacian or the p-Laplacian with dynamical boundary conditions. We deal both with smooth and with singular kernels and show existence and uniqueness of solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour as t goes to infinity.

Coupling local and nonlocal evolution equations

We prove existence, uniqueness and several qualitative properties for evolution equations that combine local and nonlocal diffusion operators acting in different subdomains and coupled in such a way that the resulting evolution equation is the gradient flow of an energy functional. We deal with the Cauchy, Neumann and Dirichlet problems, in the last two cases with zero boundary data. For the first two problems we prove that the model preserves the total mass. We also study the behaviour of the solutions for large times. Finally, we show that we can recover the usual heat equation (local diffusion) in a limit procedure when we rescale the nonlocal kernel in a suitable way.

The evolution problem associated with eigenvalues of the Hessian

In this paper we study the evolution problem \[ \left\lbrace\begin{array}{ll} u_t (x,t)- λ_j(D^2 u(x,t)) = 0, & \text{in } Ω\times (0,+\infty), \\ u(x,t) = g(x,t), & \text{on } \partial Ω\times (0,+\infty), \\ u(x,0) = u_0(x), & \text{in } Ω, \end{array}\right. \] where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ (that verifies a suitable geometric condition on its boundary) and $λ_j(D^2 u)$ stands for the $j-$st eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix $D^2u$. We assume that $u_0 $ and $g$ are continuous functions with the compatibility condition $u_0(x) = g(x,0)$, $x\in \partial Ω$. We show that the (unique) solution to this problem exists in the viscosity sense and can be approximated by the value function of a two-player zero-sum game as the parameter measuring the size of the step that we move in each round of the game goes to zero. In addition, when the boundary datum is independent of time, $g(x,t) =g(x)$, we show that viscosity solutions to this evolution problem stabilize and converge exponentially fast to the unique stationary solution as $t\to \infty$. For $j=1$ the limit profile is just the convex envelope inside $Ω$ of the boundary datum $g$, while for $j=N$ it is the concave envelope. We obtain this result with two different techniques: with PDE tools and and with game theoretical arguments. Moreover, in some special cases (for affine boundary data) we can show that solutions coincide with the stationary solution in finite time (that depends only on $Ω$ and not on the initial condition $u_0$).

The $\infty$-eigenvalue problem with a sign-changing weight

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a smooth bounded domain and $m\in C(\overlineΩ)$ be a sign-changing weight function. For $1<p<\infty$, consider the eigenvalue problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array} [c]{ll} -Δ_{p}u=λm(x)|u|^{p-2}u & \text{in }Ω,\\ u=0 & \text{on }\partialΩ, \end{array} \right. $$ where $Δ_{p}u$ is the usual $p$-Laplacian. Our purpose in this article is to study the limit as $p\rightarrow\infty$ for the eigenvalues $λ_{k,p}\left( m\right) $ of the aforementioned problem. In addition, we describe the limit of some normalized associated eigenfunctions when $k=1$.

An optimization problem with volume constraint with applications to optimal mass transport

In this manuscript we study the following optimization problem with volume constraint: \[ \min\left\{\frac{1}{p}\int_Ω |\nabla v|^pdx- \int_{\partial Ω} gv\,dS \colon v \in W^{1, p} \left(Ω\right), \text{ and } |\{v>0\}| \leq α\right\}. \] Here $g$ is acontinuous function and $α$ is a fixed constant such that $0< α< |Ω|$. Under the assumption that $\displaystyle \int_{\partial Ω} g(x)dS >0$ we prove that a minimizer exists and satisfies $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ccl} -Δ_p u_p = 0 &\text{in } &\{u_p>0\} \cup \{u_p<0\}, \\[5pt] |\nabla u_p|^{p-2}\frac{\partial u_p}{\partial ν} = g & \text{on } &\partial Ω \cap\partial(\{u_p>0\} \cup \{u_p<0\} ) ,\\[5pt] |\{u_p>0\}| = α. & & \end{array} \right. $$ Next, we analyze the limit as $p\to \infty$. We obtain that any sequence of weak solutions converges, up to a subsequence, $\lim\limits_{p_j \to \infty} u_{p_j}(x)=u_{\infty}(x)$, uniformly in $\overlineΩ$, and uniform limits, $u_\infty$, are solutions to the maximization problem with volume constraint $$ \max\left\{ \int_{\partial Ω} gv\,dS \colon v \in W^{1, \infty} \left(Ω\right), \|\nabla v\|_{L^{\infty}(Ω)}\leq 1 \text{ and }|\{v>0\}| \leq α\right\}. $$ Furthermore, we obtain the limit equation that is verified by $u_\infty$ in the viscosity sense. Finally, it turns out that such a limit variational problem is connected to the Monge-Kantorovich mass transfer problem with the involved measures are supported on $\partial Ω$ and along the limiting free boundary, $\partial \{u_{\infty} \neq 0\}$.

Nonlocal problems in perforated domains

In this paper we analyze nonlocal equations in perforated domains. We consider nonlocal problems of the form $f(x) = \int_{B} J(x-y) (u(y) - u(x)) dy$ with $x$ in a perforated domain $Ω^ε\subset Ω$. Here $J$ is a non-singular kernel. We think about $Ω^ε$ as a fixed set $Ω$ from where we have removed a subset that we call the holes. We deal both with the Neumann and Dirichlet conditions in the holes and assume a Dirichlet condition outside $Ω$. In the later case we impose that $u$ vanishes in the holes but integrate in the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($B=\mathbb{R}^N$) and in the former we just consider integrals in $\mathbb{R}^N$ minus the holes ($B=\mathbb{R}^N \setminus (Ω\setminus Ω^ε)$). Assuming weak convergence of the holes, specifically, under the assumption that the characteristic function of $Ω^ε$ has a weak limit, $χ_ε \rightharpoonup \mathcal{X}$ weakly$^*$ in $L^\infty(Ω)$, we analyze the limit as $ε\to 0$ of the solutions to the nonlocal problems proving that there is a nonlocal limit problem. In the case in which the holes are periodically removed balls we obtain that the critical radius is of order of the size of the typical cell (that gives the period). In addition, in this periodic case, we also study the behavior of these nonlocal problems when we rescale the kernel in order to approximate local PDE problems.

Games for eigenvalues of the Hessian and concave/convex envelopes

We study the PDE $λ_j(D^2 u) = 0$, in $Ω$, with $u=g$, on $\partial Ω$. Here $λ_1(D^2 u) \leq ... \leq λ_N (D^2 u)$ are the ordered eigenvalues of the Hessian $D^2 u$. First, we show a geometric interpretation of the viscosity solutions to the problem in terms of convex/concave envelopes over affine spaces of dimension $j$. In one of our main results, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the domain so that the problem has a continuous solution for every continuous datum $g$. Next, we introduce a two-player zero-sum game whose values approximate solutions to this PDE problem. In addition, we show an asymptotic mean value characterization for the solution the the PDE.

A limiting free boundary problem with gradient constraint and Tug-of-War games

In this manuscript we deal with regularity issues and the asymptotic behaviour (as $p \to \infty$) of solutions for elliptic free boundary problems of $p-$Laplacian type ($2 \leq p< \infty$): \begin{equation*} -Δ_p u(x) + λ_0(x)χ_{\{u>0\}}(x) = 0 \quad \mbox{in} \quad Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} with a prescribed Dirichlet boundary data, where $λ_0>0$ is a bounded function and $Ω$ is a regular domain. First, we prove the convergence as $p\to \infty$ of any family of solutions $(u_p)_{p\geq 2}$, as well as we obtain the corresponding limit operator (in non-divergence form) ruling the limit equation, $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcrcl} \max\left\{-Δ_{\infty} u_{\infty}, \,\, -|\nabla u_{\infty}| + χ_{\{u_{\infty}>0\}}\right\} & = & 0 & \text{in} & Ω\cap \{u_{\infty} \geq 0\} \\ u_{\infty} & = & g & \text{on} & \partial Ω. \end{array} \right. $$ Next, we obtain uniqueness for solutions to this limit problem together with a number of weak geometric and measure theoretical properties as non-degeneracy, uniform positive density, porosity and convergence of the free boundaries. Finally, we show that any solution to the limit operator is a limit of value functions for a specific Tug-of-War game.

Uniform stability of the ball with respect to the first Dirichlet and Neumann $\infty-$eigenvalues

In this note we analyze how perturbations of a ball $\mathfrak{B}_r \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ behaves in terms of their first (non-trivial) Neumann and Dirichlet $\infty-$eigenvalues when a volume constraint $\\mathscr{L}^n(Ω) = \mathscr{L}^n(\mathfrak{B}_r)$ is imposed. Our main result states that $Ω$ is uniformly close to a ball when it has first Neumann and Dirichlet eigenvalues close to the ones for the ball of the same volume $\mathfrak{B}_r$. In fact, we show that, if $$ |λ_{1,\infty}^D(Ω) - λ_{1,\infty}^D(\mathfrak{B}_r)| = δ_1 \quad \text{and} \quad |λ_{1,\infty}^N(Ω) - λ_{1,\infty}^N(\mathfrak{B}_r)| = δ_2, $$ then there are two balls such that $$\mathfrak{B}_{\frac{r}{δ_1 r+1}} \subset Ω\subset \mathfrak{B}_{\frac{r+δ_2 r}{1-δ_2 r}}.$$ In addition, we also obtain a result concerning stability of the Dirichlet $\infty-$eigen-functions.

Traces for fractional Sobolev spaces with variable exponents

In this note we prove a trace theorem in fractional spaces with variable exponents. To be more precise, we show that if $p\colon\overlineΩ\times \overlineΩ\to (1,\infty)$ and $q:\partial Ω\rightarrow (1,\infty)$ are continuous functions such that \[ \frac{(n-1)p(x,x)}{n-sp(x,x)}>q(x) \qquad \mbox{in} \partial Ω\cap \{x\in\overlineΩ\colon n-sp(x,x) >0\}, \] then the inequality $$ \Vert f\Vert _{\scriptstyle L^{q(\cdot)}(\partial Ω)} \leq C \left\{\Vert f\Vert _{\scriptstyle L^{\bar{p}(\cdot)}(Ω)}+ [f]_{s,p(\cdot,\cdot)} \right\} $$ holds. Here $\bar{p}(x)=p(x,x)$ and $\lbrack f\rbrack_{s,p(\cdot,\cdot)} $ denotes the fractional seminorm with variable exponent, that is given by \[ \lbrack f\rbrack_{s,p(\cdot,\cdot)} := \inf \left\{λ>0\colon \int_Ω\int_Ω\frac{|f(x)-f(y)|^{p(x,y)}}{λ^{p(x,y)} |x-y|^{n+sp(x,y)}}dxdy<1\right\} \] and $\Vert f\Vert _{\scriptstyle L^{q(\cdot)}(\partial Ω)}$ and $\Vert f\Vert _{\scriptstyle L^{\bar{p}(\cdot)}(Ω)}$ are the usual Lebesgue norms with variable exponent.

Maximal solutions for the Infinity-eigenvalue problem

In this article we prove that the first eigenvalue of the $\infty-$Laplacian $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rclcl} \min\{ -Δ_\infty v,\, |\nabla v|-λ_{1, \infty}(Ω) v \} & = & 0 & \text{in} & Ωv & = & 0 & \text{on} & \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. $$ has a unique (up to scalar multiplication) maximal solution. This maximal solution can be obtained as the limit as $\ell \nearrow 1$ of concave problems of the form $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rclcl} \min\{ -Δ_\infty v_{\ell},\, |\nabla v_{\ell}|-λ_{1, \infty}(Ω) v_{\ell}^{\ell} \} & = & 0 & \text{in} & Ωv_{\ell} & = & 0 & \text{on} & \partial Ω. \end{array} \right. $$ In this way we obtain that the maximal eigenfunction is the unique one that is the limit of the concave problems as happens for the usual eigenvalue problem for the $p-$Laplacian for a fixed $1<p<\infty$.

The infinity-Fucik spectrum

A concave-convex problem with a variable operator

We study the following elliptic problem $-A(u) = λu^q$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $A(u) (x) = Δu (x) χ_{D_1} (x)+ Δ_p u(x) χ_{D_2}(x)$ is the Laplacian in one part of the domain, $D_1$, and the $p-$Laplacian (with $p>2$) in the rest of the domain, $D_2 $. We show that this problem exhibits a concave-convex nature for $1 λ^*$ and a minimal positive solution for $0<λ< λ^*$. If in addition we assume that $p$ is subcritical, that is, $p<2N/(N-2)$ then there are at least two positive solutions for almost every $0<λ< λ^*$, the first one (that exists for all $0<λ< λ^*$) is obtained minimizing a suitable functional and the second one (that is proven to exist for almost every $0<λ< λ^*$) comes from an appropriate (and delicate) mountain pass argument.

Optimal design problems for the first $p-$fractional eigenvalue with mixed boundary conditions

In this paper we study an optimal shape design problem for the first eigenvalue of the fractional $p-$laplacian with mixed boundary conditions. The optimization variable is the set where the Dirichlet condition is imposed (that is restricted to have measure equal than a prescribed quantity, $α$). We show existence of an optimal design and analyze the asymptotic behavior when the fractional parameter $s\uparrow 1$ obtaining asymptotic bounds that are independent of $α$.

Eigenvalues for systems of fractional $p-$Laplacians

We study the eigenvalue problem for a system of fractional $p-$Laplacians, that is, $$ \begin{cases} (-Δ_p)^r u = λ\dfracαp|u|^{α-2}u|v|^β &\text{in } Ω,\vspace{.1cm} (-Δ_p)^s u = λ\dfracβp|u|^α|v|^{β-2}v &\text{in } Ω, u=v=0 &\text{in }Ω^c=\R^N\setminusΩ. \end{cases} $$ We show that there is a first (smallest) eigenvalue that is simple and has associated eigen-pairs composed of positive and bounded functions. Moreover, there is a sequence of eigenvalues $λ_n$ such that $λ_n\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$. In addition, we study the limit as $p\to \infty$ of the first eigenvalue, $λ_{1,p}$, and we obtain $ [λ_{1,p}]^{\nicefrac{1}{p}}\to Λ_{1,\infty} $ as $p\to\infty,$ where $$ Λ_{1,\infty} = \inf_{(u,v)} \left\{ \frac{\max \{ [u]_{r,\infty} ; [v]_{s,\infty} \} }{ \| |u|^Γ |v|^{1-Γ} \|_{L^\infty (Ω)} } \right\} = \left[ \frac{1}{R(Ω)} \right]^{ (1-Γ) s + Γr }. $$ Here $R(Ω):=\max_{x\inΩ}\dist(x,\partialΩ)$ and $[w]_{t,\infty} \coloneqq \sup_{(x,y)\in\overlineΩ} \frac{| w(y) - w(x)|}{|x-y|^{t}}.$ Finally, we identify a PDE problem satisfied, in the viscosity sense, by any possible uniform limit along subsequences of the eigen-pairs.
