Soft Scalars in Effective Field Theory

We derive a soft theorem for a massless scalar in an effective field theory with generic field content using the geometry of field space. This result extends the geometric soft theorem for scalar effective field theories by allowing the massless scalar to couple to other scalars, fermions, and gauge bosons. The soft theorem keeps its geometric form, but where the field-space geometry now involves the full field content of the theory. As a bonus, we also present novel double soft theorems with fermions, which mimic the geometric structure of the double soft theorem for scalars.

Comparison of post-Minkowskian and self-force expansions: Scattering in a scalar charge toy model

We compare numerical self-force results and analytical fourth-order post-Minkowskian (PM) calculations for hyperbolic-type scattering of a point-like particle carrying a scalar charge $Q$ off a Schwarzschild black hole, showing a remarkably good agreement. Specifically, we numerically compute the scattering angle including the full $O(Q^2)$ scalar-field self-force term (but ignoring the gravitational self-force), and compare with analytical expressions obtained in a PM framework using scattering-amplitude methods. This example provides a nontrivial, high-precision test of both calculation methods, and illustrates the complementarity of the two approaches in the context of the program to provide high-precision models of gravitational two-body dynamics. Our PM calculation is carried out through 4PM order, i.e., including all terms through $O(Q^2 G^3)$. At the fourth post-Minkowskian order the point-particle description involves two a-priori undetermined coefficients, due to contributions from tidal effects in the model under consideration. These coefficients are chosen to align the post-Minkowskian results with the self-force ones.

Non-perturbative Double Copy in Flatland

We derive a non-perturbative, Lagrangian-level formulation of the double copy in two spacetime dimensions. Our results elucidate the field theoretic underpinnings of the double copy in a broad class of scalar theories which can include masses and higher-dimension operators. An immediate corollary is the amplitudes-level double copy at all orders in perturbation theory. Applied to certain integrable models, the double copy defines an isomorphism between Lax connections, Wilson lines, and infinite towers of conserved currents. We also implement the double copy at the level of non-perturbative classical solutions, both analytically and numerically, and present a generalization of the double copy map that includes a fixed tower of higher-dimension corrections given by the Moyal algebra.

Graviton partial waves and causality in higher dimensions

Do gravitational interactions respect the basic principles of relativity and quantum mechanics? We show that any graviton S-matrix that satisfies these assumptions cannot significantly differ from General Relativity at low energies. We provide sharp bounds on the size of potential corrections in terms of the mass M of new higher-spin states, in spacetime dimensions D>=5 where the S-matrix does not suffer from infrared ambiguities. The key novel ingredient is the full set of SO(D-1) partial waves for this process, which we show how to efficiently compute with Young tableau manipulations. We record new bounds on the central charges of holographic conformal theories.

Geometry-Kinematics Duality

We propose a mapping between geometry and kinematics that implies the classical equivalence of any theory of massless bosons -- including spin and exhibiting arbitrary derivative or potential interactions -- to a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a momentum-dependent metric in field space. From this kinematic metric we construct a corresponding kinematic connection, covariant derivative, and curvature, all of which transform appropriately under general field redefinitions, even including derivatives. We show explicitly how all tree-level on-shell scattering amplitudes of massless bosons are equal to those of the NLSM via the replacement of geometry with kinematics. Lastly, we describe how the recently introduced geometric soft theorem of the NLSM, which universally encodes all leading and subleading soft scalar theorems, also captures the soft photon theorems.

Causality constraints on corrections to Einstein gravity

We study constraints from causality and unitarity on $2\to2$ graviton scattering in four-dimensional weakly-coupled effective field theories. Together, causality and unitarity imply dispersion relations that connect low-energy observables to high-energy data. Using such dispersion relations, we derive two-sided bounds on gravitational Wilson coefficients in terms of the mass $M$ of new higher-spin states. Our bounds imply that gravitational interactions must shut off uniformly in the limit $G \to 0$, and prove the scaling with $M$ expected from dimensional analysis (up to an infrared logarithm). We speculate that causality, together with the non-observation of gravitationally-coupled higher spin states at colliders, severely restricts modifications to Einstein gravity that could be probed by experiments in the near future.

On-shell Correlators and Color-Kinematics Duality in Curved Symmetric Spacetimes

We define a perturbatively calculable quantity--the on-shell correlator--which furnishes a unified description of particle dynamics in curved spacetime. Specializing to the case of flat and anti-de Sitter space, on-shell correlators coincide precisely with on-shell scattering amplitudes and boundary correlators, respectively. Remarkably, we find that symmetric manifolds admit a generalization of on-shell kinematics in which the corresponding momenta are literally the isometry generators of the spacetime acting on the external kinematic data. These isometric momenta are intrinsically non-commutative but exhibit on-shell conditions that are identical to those of flat space, thus providing a common language for computing and representing on-shell correlators which is agnostic about the underlying geometry. Afterwards, we compute tree-level on-shell correlators for biadjoint scalar (BAS) theory and the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and learn that color-kinematics duality is manifested at the level of fields under a mapping of the color algebra to the algebra of gauged isometries on the spacetime manifold. Last but not least, we present a field theoretic derivation of the fundamental BCJ relations for on-shell correlators following from the existence of certain conserved currents in BAS theory and the NLSM.

Scattering Amplitudes, the Tail Effect, and Conservative Binary Dynamics at $O(G^4)$

We complete the calculation of conservative two-body scattering dynamics at fourth post-Minkowskian order, i.e. $O(G^4)$ and all orders in velocity, including radiative contributions corresponding to the tail effect in general relativity. As in previous calculations, we harness powerful tools from the modern scattering amplitudes program including generalized unitarity, the double copy, and advanced multiloop integration methods, in combination with effective field theory. The classical amplitude involves complete elliptic integrals, and polylogarithms with up to transcendental weight two. Using the amplitude-action relation, we obtain the radial action directly from the amplitude, and match the known overlapping terms in the post-Newtonian expansion.

Geometric Soft Theorems

We derive a universal soft theorem for every scattering amplitude with at least one massless particle in an arbitrary theory of scalars. Our results follow from the geometry of field space and are valid for any choice of mass spectrum, potential terms, and higher-derivative interactions. For a vanishing potential, the soft limit of every amplitude is equal to the field-space covariant derivative of an amplitude with one fewer particle. Furthermore, the Adler zero and the dilaton soft theorem are special cases of our results. We also discuss more exotic scenarios in which the soft limit is non-trivial but still universal. Last but not least, we derive new theorems for multiple-soft limits which directly probe the field-space curvature, as well as on-shell recursion relations applicable to two-derivative scalar field theories exhibiting no symmetries whatsoever.

Holomorphic modular bootstrap revisited

In this work we revisit the "holomorphic modular bootstrap", i.e. the classification of rational conformal field theories via an analysis of the modular differential equations satisfied by their characters. By making use of the representation theory of ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}_n)$, we describe a method to classify allowed central charges and weights $(c,h_i)$ for theories with any number of characters $d$. This allows us to avoid various bottlenecks encountered previously in the literature, and leads to a classification of consistent characters up to $d=5$ whose modular differential equations are uniquely fixed in terms of $(c,h_i)$. In the process, we identify the full set of constraints on the allowed values of the Wronskian index for fixed $d\leq 5$.

Scattering Amplitudes and Conservative Binary Dynamics at ${\cal O}(G^4)$

Using scattering amplitudes, we obtain the potential contributions to conservative binary dynamics in general relativity at fourth post-Minkowskian order, ${\cal O}(G^4)$. As in previous lower-order calculations, we harness powerful tools from the modern scattering amplitudes program including generalized unitarity, the double copy, and advanced multiloop integration methods, in combination with effective field theory. The classical amplitude involves polylogarithms with up to transcendental weight two and elliptic integrals. We derive the radial action directly from the amplitude, and determine the corresponding Hamiltonian in isotropic gauge. Our results are in agreement with known overlapping terms up to sixth post-Newtonian order, and with the probe limit. We also determine the post-Minkowskian energy loss from radiation emission at ${\cal O}(G^3)$ via its relation to the tail effect.

Gravitational Bremsstrahlung from Reverse Unitarity

We compute the total radiated momentum carried by gravitational waves during the scattering of two spinless black holes at the lowest order in Newton's constant, $\mathcal O(G^3)$, and all orders in velocity. By analytic continuation into the bound state regime, we obtain the ${\cal O}(G^3)$ energy loss in elliptic orbits. This provides an essential step towards the complete understanding of the third-post-Minkowskian binary dynamics. We employ the formalism of Kosower, Maybee, and O'Connell (KMOC) which relates classical observables to quantum scattering amplitudes and derive the relevant integrands using generalized unitarity. The subsequent phase-space integrations are performed via the reverse unitarity method familiar from collider physics, using differential equations to obtain the exact velocity dependence from near-static boundary conditions.

Radiative Classical Gravitational Observables at $\mathcal O(G^3)$ from Scattering Amplitudes

We compute classical gravitational observables for the scattering of two spinless black holes in general relativity and $\mathcal N {=} 8$ supergravity in the formalism of Kosower, Maybee, and O'Connell (KMOC). We focus on the gravitational impulse with radiation reaction and the radiated momentum in black hole scattering at $\mathcal O(G^3)$ to all orders in the velocity. These classical observables require the construction and evaluation of certain loop-level quantities which are greatly simplified by harnessing recent advances from scattering amplitudes and collider physics. In particular, we make use of generalized unitarity to construct the relevant loop integrands, employ reverse unitarity, the method of regions, integration-by-parts (IBP), and (canonical) differential equations to simplify and evaluate all loop and phase-space integrals to obtain the classical gravitational observables of interest to two-loop order. The KMOC formalism naturally incorporates radiation effects which enables us to explore these classical quantities beyond the conservative two-body dynamics. From the impulse and the radiated momentum, we extract the scattering angle and the radiated energy. Finally, we discuss universality of the impulse in the high-energy limit and the relation to the eikonal phase.

Gravity loop integrands from the ultraviolet

We demonstrate that loop integrands of (super-)gravity scattering amplitudes possess surprising properties in the ultraviolet (UV) region. In particular, we study the scaling of multi-particle unitarity cuts for asymptotically large momenta and expose an improved UV behavior of four-dimensional cuts through seven loops as compared to standard expectations. For N=8 supergravity, we show that the improved large momentum scaling combined with the behavior of the integrand under BCFW deformations of external kinematics uniquely fixes the loop integrands in a number of non-trivial cases. In the integrand construction, all scaling conditions are homogeneous. Therefore, the only required information about the amplitude is its vanishing at particular points in momentum space. This homogeneous construction gives indirect evidence for a new geometric picture for graviton amplitudes similar to the one found for planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We also show how the behavior at infinity is related to the scaling of tree-level amplitudes under certain multi-line chiral shifts which can be used to construct new recursion relations.

Extremal black hole scattering at O(G^3): graviton dominance, eikonal exponentiation, and differential equations

We use $\mathcal N=8$ supergravity as a toy model for understanding the dynamics of black hole binary systems via the scattering amplitudes approach. We compute the conservative part of the classical scattering angle of two extremal (half-BPS) black holes with minimal charge misalignment at $\mathcal O(G^3)$ using the eikonal approximation and effective field theory, finding agreement between both methods. We construct the massive loop integrands by Kaluza-Klein reduction of the known $D$-dimensional massless integrands. To carry out integration we formulate a novel method for calculating the post-Minkowskian expansion with exact velocity dependence, by solving velocity differential equations for the Feynman integrals subject to modified boundary conditions that isolate conservative contributions from the potential region. Motivated by a recent result for universality in massless scattering, we compare the scattering angle to the result found by Bern et. al. in Einstein gravity and find that they coincide in the high-energy limit, suggesting graviton dominance at this order.

Leading Nonlinear Tidal Effects and Scattering Amplitudes

We present the two-body Hamiltonian and associated eikonal phase, to leading post-Minkowskian order, for infinitely many tidal deformations described by operators with arbitrary powers of the curvature tensor. Scattering amplitudes in momentum and position space provide systematic complementary approaches. For the tidal operators quadratic in curvature, which describe the linear response to an external gravitational field, we work out the leading post-Minkowskian contributions using a basis of operators with arbitrary numbers of derivatives which are in one-to-one correspondence with the worldline multipole operators. Explicit examples are used to show that the same techniques apply to both bodies interacting tidally with a spinning particle, for which we find the leading contributions from quadratic in curvature tidal operators with an arbitrary number of derivatives, and to effective field theory extensions of general relativity. We also note that the leading post-Minkowskian order contributions from higher-dimension operators manifest double-copy relations. Finally, we comment on the structure of higher-order corrections.

Topological Superconductors on Superstring Worldsheets

We point out that different choices of Gliozzi-Scherk-Olive (GSO) projections in superstring theory can be conveniently understood by the inclusion of fermionic invertible phases, or equivalently topological superconductors, on the worldsheet. This allows us to find that the unoriented Type $\rm 0$ string theory with $Ω^2=(-1)^{\sf f}$ admits different GSO projections parameterized by $n$ mod 8, depending on the number of Kitaev chains on the worldsheet. The presence of $n$ boundary Majorana fermions then leads to the classification of D-branes by $KO^n(X)\oplus KO^{-n}(X)$ in these theories, which we also confirm by the study of the D-brane boundary states. Finally, we show that there is no essentially new GSO projection for the Type $\rm I$ worldsheet theory by studying the relevant bordism group, which classifies corresponding invertible phases. This paper provides the details for the results announced in the letter \cite{Kaidi:2019pzj}.

Structure of two-loop SMEFT anomalous dimensions via on-shell methods

We describe on-shell methods for computing one- and two-loop anomalous dimensions in the context of effective field theories containing higher-dimension operators. We also summarize methods for computing one-loop amplitudes, which are used as inputs to the computation of two-loop anomalous dimensions, and we explain how the structure of rational terms and judicious renormalization scheme choices can lead to additional vanishing terms in the anomalous dimension matrix at two loops. We describe the two-loop implications for the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). As a by-product of this analysis we verify a variety of one-loop SMEFT anomalous dimensions computed by Alonso, Jenkins, Manohar and Trott.
