Homogenized spectral problems for exactly solvable operators: asymptotics of polynomial eigenfunctions

Consider a homogenized spectral pencil of exactly solvable linear differential operators $T_{\la}=\sum_{i=0}^k Q_{i}(z)\la^{k-i}\frac {d^i}{dz^i}$, where each $Q_{i}(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $i$ and $\la$ is the spectral parameter. We show that under mild nondegeneracy assumptions for all sufficiently large positive integers $n$ there exist exactly $k$ distinct values $\la_{n,j}$, $1\le j\le k$, of the spectral parameter $\la$ such that the operator $T_{\la}$ has a polynomial eigenfunction $p_{n,j}(z)$ of degree $n$. These eigenfunctions split into $k$ different families according to the asymptotic behavior of their eigenvalues. We conjecture and prove sequential versions of three fundamental properties: the limits $Ψ_{j}(z)=\lim_{n\to\infty} \frac{p_{n,j}'(z)}{\la_{n,j}p_{n,j}(z)}$ exist, are analytic and satisfy the algebraic equation $\sum_{i=0}^k Q_{i}(z) Ψ_{j}^i(z)=0$ almost everywhere in $\bCP$. As a consequence we obtain a class of algebraic functions possessing a branch near $\infty\in \bCP$ which is representable as the Cauchy transform of a compactly supported probability measure.

Hyperbolicity preservers and majorization

The majorization order on $\RR^n$ induces a natural partial ordering on the space of univariate hyperbolic polynomials of degree $n$. We characterize all linear operators on polynomials that preserve majorization, and show that it is sufficient (modulo obvious degree constraints) to preserve hyperbolicity.

Subharmonic Configurations and Algebraic Cauchy Transforms of Probability Measures

We study subharmonic functions whose Laplacian is supported on a null set and in connected components of of the complement to the support admit harmonic extensions to larger sets. We prove that if such a function has a piecewise holomorphic derivative, then it is locally piecewise harmonic. In generic cases it coincides locally with the maximum of finitely many harmonic functions. Moreover, we describe the support when the holomorphic derivative satisfies a global algebraic equation. The proofs follow classical patterns and our methods may also be of independent interest.

Multivariate Polya-Schur classification problems in the Weyl algebra

A multivariate polynomial is {\em stable} if it is nonvanishing whenever all variables have positive imaginary parts. We classify all linear partial differential operators in the Weyl algebra $\A_n$ that preserve stability. An important tool that we develop in the process is the higher dimensional generalization of Pólya-Schur's notion of multiplier sequence. We characterize all multivariate multiplier sequences as well as those of finite order. Next, we establish a multivariate extension of the Cauchy-Poincaré interlacing theorem and prove a natural analog of the Lax conjecture for real stable polynomials in two variables. Using the latter we describe all operators in $\A_1$ that preserve univariate hyperbolic polynomials by means of determinants and homogenized symbols. Our methods also yield homotopical properties for symbols of linear stability preservers and a duality theorem showing that an operator in $\A_n$ preserves stability if and only if its Fischer-Fock adjoint does. These are powerful multivariate extensions of the classical Hermite-Poulain-Jensen theorem, Pólya's curve theorem and Schur-Maló-Szegő composition theorems. Examples and applications to strict stability preservers are also discussed.

The Lee-Yang and Pólya-Schur Programs. I. Linear Operators Preserving Stability

In 1952 Lee and Yang proposed the program of analyzing phase transitions in terms of zeros of partition functions. Linear operators preserving non-vanishing properties are essential in this program and various contexts in complex analysis, probability theory, combinatorics, and matrix theory. We characterize all linear operators on finite or infinite-dimensional spaces of multivariate polynomials preserving the property of being non-vanishing whenever the variables are in prescribed open circular domains. In particular, this solves the higher dimensional counterpart of a long-standing classification problem originating from classical works of Hermite, Laguerre, Hurwitz and Pólya-Schur on univariate polynomials with such properties.

Classifications of linear operators preserving elliptic, positive and non-negative polynomials

We characterize all linear operators on finite or infinite-dimensional spaces of univariate real polynomials preserving the sets of elliptic, positive, and non-negative polynomials, respectively. This is done by means of Fischer-Fock dualities, Hankel forms, and convolutions with non-negative measures. We also establish higher-dimensional analogs of these results. In particular, our classification theorems solve the questions raised in [9] originating from entire function theory and the literature pertaining to Hilbert's 17th problem.

Piecewise harmonic subharmonic functions and positive Cauchy transforms

We give a local characterization of the class of functions having positive distributional derivative with respect to $\bar{z}$ that are almost everywhere equal to one of finitely many analytic functions and satisfy some mild non-degeneracy assumptions. As a consequence, we give conditions that guarantee that any subharmonic piecewise harmonic function coincides locally with the maximum of finitely many harmonic functions and we describe the topology of their level curves. These results are valid in a quite general setting as they assume no {\em à priori} conditions on the differentiable structure of the support of the associated Riesz measures. We also discuss applications to positive Cauchy transforms and we consider several examples and related problems.

Lee-Yang Problems and The Geometry of Multivariate Polynomials

We describe all linear operators on spaces of multivariate polynomials preserving the property of being non-vanishing in open circular domains. This completes the multivariate generalization of the classification program initiated by Pólya-Schur for univariate real polynomials and provides a natural framework for dealing in a uniform way with Lee-Yang type problems in statistical mechanics, combinatorics, and geometric function theory. This is an announcement with some of the main results in arXiv:0809.0401 and arXiv:0809.3087.

The Lee-Yang and Pólya-Schur Programs. II. Theory of Stable Polynomials and Applications

In the first part of this series we characterized all linear operators on spaces of multivariate polynomials preserving the property of being non-vanishing in products of open circular domains. For such sets this completes the multivariate generalization of the classification program initiated by Pólya-Schur for univariate real polynomials. We build on these classification theorems to develop here a theory of multivariate stable polynomials. Applications and examples show that this theory provides a natural framework for dealing in a uniform way with Lee-Yang type problems in statistical mechanics, combinatorics, and geometric function theory in one or several variables. In particular, we answer a question of Hinkkanen on multivariate apolarity.

Applications of stable polynomials to mixed determinants: Johnson's conjectures, unimodality, and symmetrized Fischer products

For $n \times n$ matrices $A$ and $B$ define $$η(A,B)=\sum_{S}\det(A[S])\det(B[S']),$$ where the summation is over all subsets of $\{1,..., n\}$, $S'$ is the complement of $S$, and $A[S]$ is the principal submatrix of $A$ with rows and columns indexed by $S$. We prove that if $A\geq 0$ and $B$ is Hermitian then (1) the polynomial $η(zA,-B)$ has all real roots (2) the latter polynomial has as many positive, negative and zero roots (counting multiplicities) as suggested by the inertia of $B$ if $A>0$ and (3) for $1\le i\le n$ the roots of $η(zA[\{i\}'],-B[\{i\}'])$ interlace those of $η(zA,-B)$. Assertions (1)-(3) solve three important conjectures proposed by C. R. Johnson 20 years ago. Moreover, we substantially extend these results to tuples of matrix pencils and real stable polynomials. In the process we establish unimodality properties in the sense of majorization for the coefficients of homogeneous real stable polynomials and as an application we derive similar properties for symmetrized Fischer products of positive definite matrices. We also obtain Laguerre type inequalities for characteristic polynomials of principal submatrices of arbitrary Hermitian matrices that considerably generalize a certain subset of the Hadamard-Fischer-Koteljanskii inequalities for principal minors of positive definite matrices. Finally, we propose Lax type problems for real stable polynomials and mixed determinants.

Negative dependence and the geometry of polynomials

We introduce the class of {\em strongly Rayleigh} probability measures by means of geometric properties of their generating polynomials that amount to the stability of the latter. This class covers important models such as determinantal measures (e.g. product measures, uniform random spanning tree measures) and distributions for symmetric exclusion processes. We show that strongly Rayleigh measures enjoy all virtues of negative dependence and we also prove a series of conjectures due to Liggett, Pemantle, and Wagner, respectively. Moreover, we extend Lyons' recent results on determinantal measures and we construct counterexamples to several conjectures of Pemantle and Wagner on negative dependence and ultra log-concave rank sequences.

Polya-Schur master theorems for circular domains and their boundaries

We characterize all linear operators on finite or infinite-dimensional polynomial spaces that preserve the property of having the zero set inside a prescribed region $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ for arbitrary closed circular domains $Ω$ (i.e., images of the closed unit disk under a Möbius transformation) and their boundaries. This provides a natural framework for dealing with several long-standing fundamental problems, which we solve in a unified way. In particular, for $Ω=\mathbb{R}$ our results settle open questions that go back to Laguerre and Pólya-Schur.

Root asymptotics of spectral polynomials for the Lame operator

The study of polynomial solutions to the classical Lamé equation in its algebraic form, or equivalently, of double-periodic solutions of its Weierstrass form has a long history. Such solutions appear at integer values of the spectral parameter and their respective eigenvalues serve as the ends of bands in the boundary value problem for the corresponding Schrödinger equation with finite gap potential given by the Weierstrass $\wp$-function on the real line. In this paper we establish several natural (and equivalent) formulas in terms of hypergeometric and elliptic type integrals for the density of the appropriately scaled asymptotic distribution of these eigenvalues when the integer-valued spectral parameter tends to infinity. We also show that this density satisfies a Heun differential equation with four singularities.

Preserving positive polynomials and beyond

Following the classical approach of Pólya-Schur theory we initiate in this paper the study of linear operators acting on $\mathbb{R}[x]$ and preserving either the set of positive univariate polynomials or similar sets of non-negative and elliptic polynomials.

On eigenvalues of rectangular matrices

Given a $(k+1)$-tuple $A, B_1,...,B_k$ of $(m\times n)$-matrices with $m\le n$ we call the set of all $k$-tuples of complex numbers $\{\la_1,...,\la_k\}$ such that the linear combination $A+\la_1B_1+\la_2B_2+...+\la_kB_k$ has rank smaller than $m$ the {\it eigenvalue locus} of the latter pencil. Motivated primarily by applications to multi-parameter generalizations of the Heine-Stieltjes spectral problem, see \cite{He} and \cite{Vol}, we study a number of properties of the eigenvalue locus in the most important case $k=n-m+1$.

Maximal and inextensible polynomials and the geometry of the spectra of normal operators

We consider the set S(n,0) of monic complex polynomials of degree $n\ge 2$ having all their zeros in the closed unit disk and vanishing at 0. For $p\in S(n,0)$ we let $|p|_{0}$ denote the distance from the origin to the zero set of $p'$. We determine all 0-maximal polynomials of degree $n$, that is, all polynomials $p\in S(n,0)$ such that $|p|_{0}\ge |q|_{0}$ for any $q\in S(n,0)$. Using a second order variational method we then show that although some of these polynomials are inextensible, they are not necessarily locally maximal for Sendov's conjecture. This invalidates the recently claimed proofs of the conjectures of Sendov and Smale and shows that the method used in these proofs can only lead to (already known) partial results. In the second part of the paper we obtain a characterization of the critical points of a complex polynomial by means of multivariate majorization relations. We also propose an operator theoretical approach to Sendov's conjecture, which we formulate in terms of the spectral variation of a normal operator and its compression to the orthogonal complement of a trace vector. Using a theorem of Gauss-Lucas type for normal operators, we relate the problem of locating the critical points of complex polynomials to the more general problem of describing the relationships between the spectra of normal matrices and the spectra of their principal submatrices.

Convexity properties of twisted root maps

The strong spectral order induces a natural partial ordering on the manifold $H_{n}$ of monic hyperbolic polynomials of degree $n$. We prove that twisted root maps associated with linear operators acting on $H_{n}$ are Gårding convex on every polynomial pencil and we characterize the class of polynomial pencils of logarithmic derivative type by means of the strong spectral order. Let $A'$ be the monoid of linear operators that preserve hyperbolicity as well as root sums. We show that any polynomial in $H_{n}$ is the global minimum of its $A'$-orbit and we conjecture a similar result for complex polynomials.

Choquet order for spectra of higher Lame operators and orthogonal polynomials

We establish a hierarchy of weighted majorization relations for the singularities of generalized Lamé equations and the zeros of their Van Vleck and Heine-Stieltjes polynomials as well as for multiparameter spectral polynomials of higher Lamé operators. These relations translate into natural dilation and subordination properties in the Choquet order for certain probability measures associated with the aforementioned polynomials. As a consequence we obtain new inequalities for the moments and logarithmic potentials of the corresponding root-counting measures and their weak-$^*$ limits in the semi-classical and various thermodynamic asymptotic regimes. We also prove analogous results for systems of orthogonal polynomials such as Jacobi polynomials.
