JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo

We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande.

GigaST: A 10,000-hour Pseudo Speech Translation Corpus

This paper introduces GigaST, a large-scale pseudo speech translation (ST) corpus. We create the corpus by translating the text in GigaSpeech, an English ASR corpus, into German and Chinese. The training set is translated by a strong machine translation system and the test set is translated by human. ST models trained with an addition of our corpus obtain new state-of-the-art results on the MuST-C English-German benchmark test set. We provide a detailed description of the translation process and verify its quality. We make the translated text data public and hope to facilitate research in speech translation. Additionally, we also release the training scripts on NeurST to make it easy to replicate our systems. GigaST dataset is available at https://st-benchmark.github.io/resources/GigaST.

Towards a Sub-percent Precision Measurement of $\sin^2θ_{13}$ with Reactor Antineutrinos

Measuring the neutrino mixing parameter \ensuremath{\sin^2θ_{13}} to the sub-percent precision level could be necessary in the next ten years for the precision unitary test of the PMNS matrix. In this work, we discuss the possibility of such a measurement with reactor antineutrinos. We find that a single liquid scintillator detector on a reasonable scale could achieve the goal. We propose to install a detector of $\sim10$\% energy resolution at about 2.0~km from the reactors with a JUNO-like overburden. The integrated luminosity requirement is about 150~${\rm kton}\cdot {\rm GW}\cdot {\rm year}$, corresponding to 4 years' operation of a 4~kton detector near a reactor complex of 9.2 GW thermal power like Taishan reactor. Unlike the previous $θ_{13}$ experiments with identical near and far detectors, which can suppress the systematics especially the rate uncertainty by the near-far relative measurement and the optimal baseline is at the first oscillation maximum of about 1.8~km, a single-detector measurement prefers to offset the baseline from the oscillation maximum. At low statistics $\lesssim 10$~${\rm kton}\cdot {\rm GW}\cdot {\rm year}$, the rate uncertainty dominates the systematics, and the optimal baseline is about 1.3~km. At higher statistics, the spectral shape uncertainty becomes dominant, and the optimal baseline shifts to about 2.0~km. The optimal baseline keeps being $\sim 2.0$~km for an integrated luminosity up to $10^6$~${\rm kton}\cdot {\rm GW}\cdot {\rm year}$. We have assumed that the TAO experiment will improve our understanding of the spectral shape uncertainty, which gives the highest precision measurement of reactor antineutrino spectrum for neutrino energy in the range of 3--6~MeV. We find that the optimal baseline is $\sim 2.9$~km with a flat input spectral shape uncertainty provided by the future summation or conversion methods' prediction.

The JUNO experiment Top Tracker

The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. This paper will present the new electronics and mechanical structure developed for the Top Tracker of JUNO along with its expected performance based on the current detector simulation.

JUNO sensitivity to $^7$Be, $pep$, and CNO solar neutrinos

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector, which is under construction in China, will have a unique potential to perform a real-time measurement of solar neutrinos well below the few MeV threshold typical for Water Cherenkov detectors. JUNO's large target mass and excellent energy resolution are prerequisites for reaching unprecedented levels of precision. In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This study is performed assuming different scenarios of the liquid scintillator radiopurity, ranging from the most opti mistic one corresponding to the radiopurity levels obtained by the Borexino experiment, up to the minimum requirements needed to perform the neutrino mass ordering determination with reactor antineutrinos - the main goal of JUNO. Our study shows that in most scenarios, JUNO will be able to improve the current best measurements on 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrino fluxes. We also perform a study on the JUNO capability to detect periodical time variations in the solar neutrino flux, such as the day-night modulation induced by neutrino flavor regeneration in Earth, and the modulations induced by temperature changes driven by helioseismic waves.

Augmentation-Free Graph Contrastive Learning of Invariant-Discriminative Representations

The pretasks are mainly built on mutual information estimation, which requires data augmentation to construct positive samples with similar semantics to learn invariant signals and negative samples with dissimilar semantics in order to empower representation discriminability. However, an appropriate data augmentation configuration depends heavily on lots of empirical trials such as choosing the compositions of data augmentation techniques and the corresponding hyperparameter settings. We propose an augmentation-free graph contrastive learning method, invariant-discriminative graph contrastive learning (iGCL), that does not intrinsically require negative samples. iGCL designs the invariant-discriminative loss (ID loss) to learn invariant and discriminative representations. On the one hand, ID loss learns invariant signals by directly minimizing the mean square error between the target samples and positive samples in the representation space. On the other hand, ID loss ensures that the representations are discriminative by an orthonormal constraint forcing the different dimensions of representations to be independent of each other. This prevents representations from collapsing to a point or subspace. Our theoretical analysis explains the effectiveness of ID loss from the perspectives of the redundancy reduction criterion, canonical correlation analysis, and information bottleneck principle. The experimental results demonstrate that iGCL outperforms all baselines on 5 node classification benchmark datasets. iGCL also shows superior performance for different label ratios and is capable of resisting graph attacks, which indicates that iGCL has excellent generalization and robustness. Spin-state Directed Synthesis of >20 micrometers 2D Layered Transition Metal Hydroxides via Edge-on Condensation

Layered transition metal hydroxides (LTMHs) with transition metal centers sandwiched between layers of coordinating hydroxide anions have attracted considerable interest for their potential in developing clean energy sources and storage technologies. However, two dimensional (2D) LTMHs remain largely unstudied in terms of their physical properties and the applications in electronic devices. Here, directed by the relationship of the spin state of 3d transition metal (TM) ions such as Ni, Co, Cu, and the corresponding geometry of the crystal field, we discover that Ni2+ with perfect Oh symmetry is ideal for intraplanar growth, leading to the achievement of >20 μm α-Ni(OH)2 2D crystals with high yield, which are the largest 2D domains reported so far. We also report the successful synthesis of 2D Co(OH)2 crystals (>40 μm) with less yield due to the slight geometry distortion resulted from uneven number of electrons. Moreover, the detailed structural characterization of synthesized α-Ni(OH)2 are performed; the optical band gap energy is extrapolated as 2.54 eV from optical absorption measurements and is measured as 2.50 eV from reflected electrons energy loss spectroscopy (REELS), suggesting the potential as insulating 2D dielectric material for electronic devices. Furthermore, key parameters of the hydrothermal reaction including soaking temperature, starting pH and cooling rate, are systematically tuned to understand their effects on morphological and crystallographic perspectives, allowing the establishment of a 2D growth mechanism. This work demonstrates a scalable pathway to synthesize large 2D LTMHs from simple methods, paving the way for the study of fundamental physical properties and device applications of 2D LTMHs.

Prospects for Detecting the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO

We present the detection potential for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), using the inverse-beta-decay (IBD) detection channel on free protons. We employ the latest information on the DSNB flux predictions, and investigate in detail the background and its reduction for the DSNB search at JUNO. The atmospheric neutrino induced neutral current (NC) background turns out to be the most critical background, whose uncertainty is carefully evaluated from both the spread of model predictions and an envisaged \textit{in situ} measurement. We also make a careful study on the background suppression with the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and triple coincidence (TC) cuts. With latest DSNB signal predictions, more realistic background evaluation and PSD efficiency optimization, and additional TC cut, JUNO can reach the significance of 3$σ$ for 3 years of data taking, and achieve better than 5$σ$ after 10 years for a reference DSNB model. In the pessimistic scenario of non-observation, JUNO would strongly improve the limits and exclude a significant region of the model parameter space.

Zero-shot Domain Adaptation for Neural Machine Translation with Retrieved Phrase-level Prompts

Domain adaptation is an important challenge for neural machine translation. However, the traditional fine-tuning solution requires multiple extra training and yields a high cost. In this paper, we propose a non-tuning paradigm, resolving domain adaptation with a prompt-based method. Specifically, we construct a bilingual phrase-level database and retrieve relevant pairs from it as a prompt for the input sentences. By utilizing Retrieved Phrase-level Prompts (RePP), we effectively boost the translation quality. Experiments show that our method improves domain-specific machine translation for 6.2 BLEU scores and improves translation constraints for 11.5% accuracy without additional training.

Applying a Chemical Structure Teaching Method in the Pharmaceutical Analysis Curriculum to Improve Student Engagement and Learning

Pharmaceutical analysis, as the core curriculum of chemistry, chemical engineering and pharmaceutical engineering, contains broad and in-depth knowledge that leads to massive learning & teaching loads. There are more than 100 analytical methods of medicines in this course. As such, this subject is a big challenge for both students and lecturers. A novel chemical structure teaching (CST) method was developed based on our long-term teaching experience to cope with these challenges. It has been shown in practice that this CST method can significantly unload the stress of students and lecturers simultaneously. The survey about the improvement of students' interests was carried out and listed in the form of questionnaire. The outcome of CST also indicates that it can help them to form abilities of critical and logical thinking as independent learners, motivate them to discuss with their peers and lecturers, and eventually improve average grades. Furthermore, CST can be beneficial for lecturers who instruct other relevant curriculum in chemical or pharmaceutical engineering to improve the teaching outcome, such as organic chemistry, spectrum analysis, pharmaceutical synthesis and medicinal chemistry. This CST model can also help students cultivate lifelong learning ability as active learners and habit from the cognitive perspective view.

Mass Testing and Characterization of 20-inch PMTs for JUNO

Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Efficient sunlight promoted nitrogen fixation from air under room temperature and ambient pressure via Ti/Mo composites

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an important pathway for carbon neutralization and sustainable development. Inspired by nitrogenase, the participation of molybdenum can effectively activate nitrogen. A novel Ti/Mo composites photocatalyst is designed by sintering the molybdenum acetylacetonate precursor with TiO$_{2}$. The special carbon-coated hexagonal photocatalyst is obtained which photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance is enhanced 16 times compared to pure TiO$_{2}$ at room temperature and ambient pressure. The abundant surface defects in this composite were confirmed to be the key factor for nitrogen fixation. The $^{15}$N$_{2}$ isotope labeling experiment was used to demonstrate the feasibility of nitrogen to ammonia conversion. Also, modelling on the interactions between light and the synthesized photocatalyst particle was examined for the light absorption. The optimum nitrogen fixation conditions have been examined, and the nitrogen fixation performance can reach up to 432 $μ$g$\cdot$g$_{\text{cat}}^{-1}\cdot$h$^{-1}$. Numerical simulations via the field-only surface integral method were also carried out to study the interactions between light and the photocatalytic particles to further confirm that it can be a useful material for photocatalyst. This newly developed Ti/Mo composites provide a simple and effective strategy for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from air directly under ambient conditions.

Ambient Neutron Measurement at Taishan Antineutrino Observatory

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a ton-level liquid scintillator detector to be placed at 30\,m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant for precise reactor antineutrino spectrum measurements. One important background for TAO physics are the interactions of ambient neutrons that can penetrate its outer shieldings. The neutrons fluence and energy spectrum are measured with a Bonner sphere spectrometer. Data is unfolded with the iterative Maximum-Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM) method. A simulation based on Geant4 is performed to provide the initial input spectrum to the unfolding and to understand the unfolded result. The total neutron fluence rate is measured to be 36.1 $\pm$ 4.7 $Hz/m^2$, which is higher than the expectation. For neutrons with kinetic energy lower than 20\,MeV, the measured fluence rate and energy spectrum can be well reproduced by simulation. While for the region greater than 20\,MeV, a significant discrepancy is observed and shall be understood with further studies.

Battery and Hydrogen Energy Storage Control in a Smart Energy Network with Flexible Energy Demand using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Smart energy networks provide for an effective means to accommodate high penetrations of variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are key for deep decarbonisation of energy production. However, given the variability of the renewables as well as the energy demand, it is imperative to develop effective control and energy storage schemes to manage the variable energy generation and achieve desired system economics and environmental goals. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid energy storage system composed of battery and hydrogen energy storage to handle the uncertainties related to electricity prices, renewable energy production and consumption. We aim to improve renewable energy utilisation and minimise energy costs and carbon emissions while ensuring energy reliability and stability within the network. To achieve this, we propose a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient approach, which is a deep reinforcement learning-based control strategy to optimise the scheduling of the hybrid energy storage system and energy demand in real-time. The proposed approach is model-free and does not require explicit knowledge and rigorous mathematical models of the smart energy network environment. Simulation results based on real-world data show that: (i) integration and optimised operation of the hybrid energy storage system and energy demand reduces carbon emissions by 78.69%, improves cost savings by 23.5% and renewable energy utilisation by over 13.2% compared to other baseline models and (ii) the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art self-learning algorithms like deep-Q network.

Detector optimization to reduce the cosmogenic neutron backgrounds in the TAO experiment

Short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments with shallow overburden usually have large cosmogenic neutron backgrounds. The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a ton-level liquid scintillator detector located at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. It will measure the reactor antineutrino spectrum with high precision and high energy resolution to provide a reference spectrum for JUNO and other reactor antineutrino experiments, and provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. Background is one of the critical concerns of TAO since the overburden is just 10 meter-water-equivalent. The cosmogenic neutron background was estimated to be ~10% of signals. With detailed Monte Carlo simulations, we propose several measures in this work to reduce the neutron backgrounds, including doping Gadolinium in the buffer liquid, adding a polyethylene layer above the bottom lead shield, and optimization of the veto strategy. With these improvements, the neutron background-to-signal ratio can be reduced to ~2%, and might be further suppressed with pulse shape discrimination.

Damping signatures at JUNO, a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment

We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, $ν_3$ decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on $τ_3/m_3$ in the $ν_3$ decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet $σ_x$, and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum $σ_{\rm rel}$.

Calibration Strategy of the JUNO-TAO Experiment

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (JUNO-TAO, or TAO) is a satellite detector for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). Located near the Taishan reactor, TAO independently measures the reactor's antineutrino energy spectrum with unprecedented energy resolution. To achieve this goal, energy response must be well calibrated. Using the Automated Calibration Unit (ACU) and the Cable Loop System (CLS) of TAO, multiple radioactive sources are deployed to various positions in the detector to perform a precise calibration of energy response. The non-linear energy response can be controlled within 0.6% with different energy points of these radioactive sources. It can be further improved by using $^{12}\rm B$ decay signals produced by cosmic muons. Through the energy non-uniformity calibration, residual non-uniformity is less than 0.2%. The energy resolution degradation and energy bias caused by the residual non-uniformity can be controlled within 0.05% and 0.3%, respectively. In addition, the stability of other detector parameters, such as the gain of each silicon photo-multiplier, can be monitored with a special ultraviolet LED calibration system.
