Multiferroic nitride perovskites with giant polarizations and large magnetic moments

Multiferroics with coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism have been pursued for decades. However, their magnetoelectric performances remain limited due to the common trade-off between ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a family of nitride perovskites is proposed as multiferroics with prominent physical properties and nontrivial mechanisms. Taking GdWN$_3$ as a prototype, our first-principles calculations found that its perovskite phases own large polarizations (e.g. $111.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ for the $R3c$ phase) and a magnetic moment $7$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Gd$^{3+}$. More interestingly, its ferroelectric origin is multiple, with significant contributions from both Gd$^{3+}$ and W$^{6+}$ ions, different from its sister member LaWN$_3$ in which the ferroelectricity almost arises from W$^{6+}$ ions only. With decreasing size of rare earth ions, the A site ions would contribute more and more to the ferroelectric instability. Considering that small rare earth ions can be primary origins of both proper ferroelectricity and magnetism in nitride perovskites, our work provides a route to pursuit more multiferroics with unconventional mechanisms and optimal performances.

Speech Enhancement with Fullband-Subband Cross-Attention Network

FullSubNet has shown its promising performance on speech enhancement by utilizing both fullband and subband information. However, the relationship between fullband and subband in FullSubNet is achieved by simply concatenating the output of fullband model and subband units. It only supplements the subband units with a small quantity of global information and has not considered the interaction between fullband and subband. This paper proposes a fullband-subband cross-attention (FSCA) module to interactively fuse the global and local information and applies it to FullSubNet. This new framework is called as FS-CANet. Moreover, different from FullSubNet, the proposed FS-CANet optimize the fullband extractor by temporal convolutional network (TCN) blocks to further reduce the model size. Experimental results on DNS Challenge - Interspeech 2021 dataset show that the proposed FS-CANet outperforms other state-of-the-art speech enhancement approaches, and demonstrate the effectiveness of fullband-subband cross-attention.

Speech Enhancement with Intelligent Neural Homomorphic Synthesis

Most neural network speech enhancement models ignore speech production mathematical models by directly mapping Fourier transform spectrums or waveforms. In this work, we propose a neural source filter network for speech enhancement. Specifically, we use homomorphic signal processing and cepstral analysis to obtain noisy speech's excitation and vocal tract. Unlike traditional signal processing, we use an attentive recurrent network (ARN) model predicted ratio mask to replace the liftering separation function. Then two convolutional attentive recurrent network (CARN) networks are used to predict the excitation and vocal tract of clean speech, respectively. The system's output is synthesized from the estimated excitation and vocal. Experiments prove that our proposed method performs better, with SI-SNR improving by 1.363dB compared to FullSubNet.

Stacking dependent ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity in quasi-one-dimensional oxyhalides NbO$X_3$

Low-dimensional ferroelectricity and polar materials have attracted considerable attentions for their fascinating physics and potential applications. Based on first-principles calculations, here we investigate the stacking modes and polar properties of a typical series of quasi-one-dimensional ferroelectrics: double-chain oxyhalides NbO$X_3$ ($X$=Cl, Br, I). The geometry of their double-chains allows both the interchain/intrachain permutation. Thus, different stacking modes of double-chains lead to a variety of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases in both the tetragonal and monoclinic crystals. The proximate energies of these phases may lead to multiphase coexistence in real materials, as well as the hydrostatic pressure driving structural phase transition. Their spontaneous polarizations and piezoelectricity of the ferroelectric phases are prominent, comparable to commercially used ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ and piezoelectric ZnO, respectively. Our work demonstrates that the van der Waals NbO$X_3$ are promising materials for exploring quasi-one-dimensional ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity.

High dimensional AdS-like black hole and Phase transition in Einstein-bumblebee gravity

In this paper we obtain an exact high dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole solution in Einstein-bumblebee gravity theory. This AdS-like black hole can only exist with a linear functional potential of the bumblebee field. We find that the Smarr formula and the first law of black hole thermodynamics can still be constructed in this Lorentz symmetry breaking black hole spacetime as long as its temperature, entropy and volume are slightly modified. We find also that there exist two kinds of phase transition: small-large black hole phase transition and Hawking-Page phase transition, like those of Schwarzschild AdS black hole. After Lorentz symmetry breaking, the black hole mass at divergent point of heat capacity becomes small, and the Gibbs free energy of the meta-stable large black hole is also smaller, showing that the large stable black hole can be more easily formed.

FastQSL: A Fast Computation Method for Quasi-separatrix Layers

Magnetic reconnection preferentially takes place at the intersection of two separatrices or two quasi-separatrix layers, which can be quantified by the squashing factor Q, whose calculation is computationally expensive due to the need to trace as many field lines as possible. We developed a method (FastQSL) optimized for obtaining Q and the twist number in a 3D data cube. FastQSL utilizes the hardware acceleration of the graphic process unit (GPU) and adopts a step-size adaptive scheme for the most computationally intensive part: tracing magnetic field lines. As a result, it achieves a computational efficiency of 4.53 million Q values per second. FastQSL is open source, and user-friendly for data import, export, and visualization.

A General Framework for Powerful Confounder Adjustment in Omics Association Studies

Genomic data are subject to various sources of confounding, such as demographic variables, biological heterogeneity, and batch effects. To identify genomic features associated with a variable of interest in the presence of confounders, the traditional approach involves fitting a confounder-adjusted regression model to each genomic feature, followed by multiplicity correction. This study shows that the traditional approach was sub-optimal and proposes a new two-dimensional false discovery rate control framework (2dFDR+) that provides significant power improvement over the conventional method and applies to a wide range of settings. 2dFDR+ uses marginal independence test statistics as auxiliary information to filter out less promising features, and FDR control is performed based on conditional independence test statistics in the remaining features. 2dFDR+ provides (asymptotically) valid inference from samples in settings where the conditional distribution of the genomic variables given the covariate of interest and the confounders is arbitrary and completely unknown. To achieve this goal, our method requires the conditional distribution of the covariate given the confounders to be known or can be estimated from the data. We develop a new procedure to simultaneously select the two cutoff values for the marginal and conditional independence test statistics. 2dFDR+ is proved to offer asymptotic FDR control and dominate the power of the traditional procedure. Promising finite sample performance is demonstrated via extensive simulations and real data applications.

Magneto-optical Kerr effect and magnetoelasticity in weak ferromagnetic RuF$_4$ monolayer

Considerable research interest has been attracted to noncollinear magnetic structures for their intriguing physics and promising applications. In this work, based on relativistic density functional theory, we reveal the interesting magnetic order and relevant properties in monolayer RuF$_4$, which can be exfoliated from its bulk phase. Although the spins on Ru ions are almost antiferromagnetically aligned between nearest-neighbors, weak ferromagnetism is generated because of the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as well as the single-ion anisotropy. A prominent magneto-optical Kerr effect can be observed for this antiferromagnet, similar to those of regular strong ferromagnets. In addition, a uniaxial strain can induce a ferroelastic switching together with the in-plane rotation of spin direction, giving rise to a strong intrinsic magnetoelasticity. Our work not only suggests an alternative direction for two-dimensional magnetic materials, but also provides hints to future devices based on antiferromagnetic magnetoelastic or magneto-optical materials.

This paper reviews the first NTIRE challenge on quality enhancement of compressed video, with a focus on the proposed methods and results. In this challenge, the new Large-scale Diverse Video (LDV) dataset is employed. The challenge has three tracks. Tracks 1 and 2 aim at enhancing the videos compressed by HEVC at a fixed QP, while Track 3 is designed for enhancing the videos compressed by x265 at a fixed bit-rate. Besides, the quality enhancement of Tracks 1 and 3 targets at improving the fidelity (PSNR), and Track 2 targets at enhancing the perceptual quality. The three tracks totally attract 482 registrations. In the test phase, 12 teams, 8 teams and 11 teams submitted the final results of Tracks 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The proposed methods and solutions gauge the state-of-the-art of video quality enhancement. The homepage of the challenge: https://github.com/RenYang-home/NTIRE21_VEnh

Event-Triggered Model Predictive Control with Deep Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Driving

Event-triggered model predictive control (eMPC) is a popular optimal control method with an aim to alleviate the computation and/or communication burden of MPC. However, it generally requires priori knowledge of the closed-loop system behavior along with the communication characteristics for designing the event-trigger policy. This paper attempts to solve this challenge by proposing an efficient eMPC framework and demonstrate successful implementation of this framework on the autonomous vehicle path following. First of all, a model-free reinforcement learning (RL) agent is used to learn the optimal event-trigger policy without the need for a complete dynamical system and communication knowledge in this framework. Furthermore, techniques including prioritized experience replay (PER) buffer and long-short term memory (LSTM) are employed to foster exploration and improve training efficiency. In this paper, we use the proposed framework with three deep RL algorithms, i.e., Double Q-learning (DDQN), Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), and Soft Actor-Critic (SAC), to solve this problem. Experimental results show that all three deep RL-based eMPC (deep-RL-eMPC) can achieve better evaluation performance than the conventional threshold-based and previous linear Q-based approach in the autonomous path following. In particular, PPO-eMPC with LSTM and DDQN-eMPC with PER and LSTM obtains a superior balance between the closed-loop control performance and event-trigger frequency. The associated code is open-sourced and available at: https://github.com/DangFengying/RL-based-event-triggered-MPC.

PSCC-Net: Progressive Spatio-Channel Correlation Network for Image Manipulation Detection and Localization

To defend against manipulation of image content, such as splicing, copy-move, and removal, we develop a Progressive Spatio-Channel Correlation Network (PSCC-Net) to detect and localize image manipulations. PSCC-Net processes the image in a two-path procedure: a top-down path that extracts local and global features and a bottom-up path that detects whether the input image is manipulated, and estimates its manipulation masks at multiple scales, where each mask is conditioned on the previous one. Different from the conventional encoder-decoder and no-pooling structures, PSCC-Net leverages features at different scales with dense cross-connections to produce manipulation masks in a coarse-to-fine fashion. Moreover, a Spatio-Channel Correlation Module (SCCM) captures both spatial and channel-wise correlations in the bottom-up path, which endows features with holistic cues, enabling the network to cope with a wide range of manipulation attacks. Thanks to the light-weight backbone and progressive mechanism, PSCC-Net can process 1,080P images at 50+ FPS. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of PSCC-Net over the state-of-the-art methods on both detection and localization.

SuperLine3D: Self-supervised Line Segmentation and Description for LiDAR Point Cloud

Poles and building edges are frequently observable objects on urban roads, conveying reliable hints for various computer vision tasks. To repetitively extract them as features and perform association between discrete LiDAR frames for registration, we propose the first learning-based feature segmentation and description model for 3D lines in LiDAR point cloud. To train our model without the time consuming and tedious data labeling process, we first generate synthetic primitives for the basic appearance of target lines, and build an iterative line auto-labeling process to gradually refine line labels on real LiDAR scans. Our segmentation model can extract lines under arbitrary scale perturbations, and we use shared EdgeConv encoder layers to train the two segmentation and descriptor heads jointly. Base on the model, we can build a highly-available global registration module for point cloud registration, in conditions without initial transformation hints. Experiments have demonstrated that our line-based registration method is highly competitive to state-of-the-art point-based approaches. Our code is available at https://github.com/zxrzju/SuperLine3D.git.

A Ligand-and-structure Dual-driven Deep Learning Method for the Discovery of Highly Potent GnRH1R Antagonist to treat Uterine Diseases

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRH1R) is a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of uterine diseases. To date, several GnRH1R antagonists are available in clinical investigation without satisfying multiple property constraints. To fill this gap, we aim to develop a deep learning-based framework to facilitate the effective and efficient discovery of a new orally active small-molecule drug targeting GnRH1R with desirable properties. In the present work, a ligand-and-structure combined model, namely LS-MolGen, was firstly proposed for molecular generation by fully utilizing the information on the known active compounds and the structure of the target protein, which was demonstrated by its superior performance than ligand- or structure-based methods separately. Then, a in silico screening including activity prediction, ADMET evaluation, molecular docking and FEP calculation was conducted, where ~30,000 generated novel molecules were narrowed down to 8 for experimental synthesis and validation. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that three of them exhibited potent inhibition activities (compound 5 IC50 = 0.856 nM, compound 6 IC50 = 0.901 nM, compound 7 IC50 = 2.54 nM) against GnRH1R, and compound 5 performed well in fundamental PK properties, such as half-life, oral bioavailability, and PPB, etc. We believed that the proposed ligand-and-structure combined molecular generative model and the whole computer-aided workflow can potentially be extended to similar tasks for de novo drug design or lead optimization.

Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning via Entropy-Regularized Data-Free Replay

Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) has been proposed aiming to enable a deep learning system to incrementally learn new classes with limited data. Recently, a pioneer claims that the commonly used replay-based method in class-incremental learning (CIL) is ineffective and thus not preferred for FSCIL. This has, if truth, a significant influence on the fields of FSCIL. In this paper, we show through empirical results that adopting the data replay is surprisingly favorable. However, storing and replaying old data can lead to a privacy concern. To address this issue, we alternatively propose using data-free replay that can synthesize data by a generator without accessing real data. In observing the the effectiveness of uncertain data for knowledge distillation, we impose entropy regularization in the generator training to encourage more uncertain examples. Moreover, we propose to relabel the generated data with one-hot-like labels. This modification allows the network to learn by solely minimizing the cross-entropy loss, which mitigates the problem of balancing different objectives in the conventional knowledge distillation approach. Finally, we show extensive experimental results and analysis on CIFAR-100, miniImageNet and CUB-200 to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed one.

A spherical harmonics method for processing anisotropic X-ray atomic pair distribution functions

A general spherical harmonics method is described for extracting anisotropic pair distribution functions (PDF) in this work. In the structural study of functional crystallized materials, the investigation of the local structures under the application of external stimuli, such as electric field and stress, is in urgent need. A well-established technique for local structure studies is PDF analysis, but the extraction of the X-ray PDF data is usually based on angular integrations of isotropic X-ray structure functions, which is no longer valid for the anisotropic responses of the materials under orientation-dependent stimuli. Therefore, we have developed an advanced spherical harmonics method to transform two-dimensional X-ray diffraction patterns into anisotropic PDF data, based on three-dimensional diffraction geometry and Fourier transform. The electrical-field-induced local structural change in the PbZr0.54Ti0.46O3 ceramics is then presented to demonstrate the method's effectiveness.

whu-nercms at trecvid2021:instance search task

We will make a brief introduction of the experimental methods and results of the WHU-NERCMS in the TRECVID2021 in the paper. This year we participate in the automatic and interactive tasks of Instance Search (INS). For the automatic task, the retrieval target is divided into two parts, person retrieval, and action retrieval. We adopt a two-stage method including face detection and face recognition for person retrieval and two kinds of action detection methods consisting of three frame-based human-object interaction detection methods and two video-based general action detection methods for action retrieval. After that, the person retrieval results and action retrieval results are fused to initialize the result ranking lists. In addition, we make attempts to use complementary methods to further improve search performance. For interactive tasks, we test two different interaction strategies on the fusion results. We submit 4 runs for automatic and interactive tasks respectively. The introduction of each run is shown in Table 1. The official evaluations show that the proposed strategies rank 1st in both automatic and interactive tracks.

CuPBoP: CUDA for Parallelized and Broad-range Processors

CUDA is one of the most popular choices for GPU programming, but it can only be executed on NVIDIA GPUs. Executing CUDA on non-NVIDIA devices not only benefits the hardware community, but also allows data-parallel computation in heterogeneous systems. To make CUDA programs portable, some researchers have proposed using source-to-source translators to translate CUDA to portable programming languages that can be executed on non-NVIDIA devices. However, most CUDA translators require additional manual modifications on the translated code, which imposes a heavy workload on developers. In this paper, CuPBoP is proposed to execute CUDA on non-NVIDIA devices without relying on any portable programming languages. Compared with existing work that executes CUDA on non-NVIDIA devices, CuPBoP does not require manual modification of the CUDA source code, but it still achieves the highest coverage (69.6%), much higher than existing frameworks (56.6%) on the Rodinia benchmark. In particular, for CPU backends, CuPBoP supports several ISAs (e.g., X86, RISC-V, AArch64) and has close or even higher performance compared with other projects. We also compare and analyze the performance among CuPBoP, manually optimized OpenMP/MPI programs, and CUDA programs on the latest Ampere architecture GPU, and show future directions for supporting CUDA programs on non-NVIDIA devices with high performance

On Distributed Lossy Coding of Symmetrically Correlated Gaussian Sources

A distributed lossy compression network with $L$ encoders and a decoder is considered. Each encoder observes a source and sends a compressed version to the decoder. The decoder produces a joint reconstruction of target signals with the mean squared error distortion below a given threshold. It is assumed that the observed sources can be expressed as the sum of target signals and corruptive noises which are independently generated from two symmetric multivariate Gaussian distributions. The minimum compression rate of this network versus the distortion threshold is referred to as the rate-distortion function, for which an explicit lower bound is established by solving a minimization problem. Our lower bound matches the well-known Berger-Tung upper bound for some values of the distortion threshold. The asymptotic gap between the upper and lower bounds is characterized in the large $L$ limit.
