Dynamical analysis and statefinder of Barrow holographic dark energy

Based on the holographic principle and the Barrow entropy, Barrow holographic dark energy had been proposed. In order to analyze the stability and the evolution of Barrow holographic dark energy, we, in this paper, apply the dynamical analysis and statefinder methods to Barrow holographic dark energy with different IR cutoff and interacting terms. In the case of using Hubble horizon as IR cutoff with the interacting term $Q=\fracλ{H}ρ_{m}ρ_{D}$, we find this model is stable and can be used to describe the whole evolution of the universe when the energy transfers from the pressureless matter to the Barrow holographic dark energy. When the dynamical analysis method is applied to this stable model, an attractor corresponding to an accelerated expansion epoch exists and this attractor can behave as the cosmological constant. Furthermore, the coincidence problem can be solved in this case. Then, after using the statefinder analysis method to this model, we find this model can be discriminated from the standard $Λ$CDM model. Finally, we have discussed the turning point of Hubble diagram in Barrow holographic dark energy and find the turning point does not exist in this model.

Indirect Domain Shift for Single Image Dehazing

Despite their remarkable expressibility, convolution neural networks (CNNs) still fall short of delivering satisfactory results on single image dehazing, especially in terms of faithful recovery of fine texture details. In this paper, we argue that the inadequacy of conventional CNN-based dehazing methods can be attributed to the fact that the domain of hazy images is too far away from that of clear images, rendering it difficult to train a CNN for learning direct domain shift through an end-to-end manner and recovering texture details simultaneously. To address this issue, we propose to add explicit constraints inside a deep CNN model to guide the restoration process. In contrast to direct learning, the proposed mechanism shifts and narrows the candidate region for the estimation output via multiple confident neighborhoods. Therefore, it is capable of consolidating the expressibility of different architectures, resulting in a more accurate indirect domain shift (IDS) from the hazy images to that of clear images. We also propose two different training schemes, including hard IDS and soft IDS, which further reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method. Our extensive experimental results indicate that the dehazing method based on this mechanism outperforms the state-of-the-arts.

Universal Rate-Distortion-Perception Representations for Lossy Compression

In the context of lossy compression, Blau & Michaeli (2019) adopt a mathematical notion of perceptual quality and define the information rate-distortion-perception function, generalizing the classical rate-distortion tradeoff. We consider the notion of universal representations in which one may fix an encoder and vary the decoder to achieve any point within a collection of distortion and perception constraints. We prove that the corresponding information-theoretic universal rate-distortion-perception function is operationally achievable in an approximate sense. Under MSE distortion, we show that the entire distortion-perception tradeoff of a Gaussian source can be achieved by a single encoder of the same rate asymptotically. We then characterize the achievable distortion-perception region for a fixed representation in the case of arbitrary distributions, identify conditions under which the aforementioned results continue to hold approximately, and study the case when the rate is not fixed in advance. This motivates the study of practical constructions that are approximately universal across the RDP tradeoff, thereby alleviating the need to design a new encoder for each objective. We provide experimental results on MNIST and SVHN suggesting that on image compression tasks, the operational tradeoffs achieved by machine learning models with a fixed encoder suffer only a small penalty when compared to their variable encoder counterparts.

GridDehazeNet+: An Enhanced Multi-Scale Network with Intra-Task Knowledge Transfer for Single Image Dehazing

We propose an enhanced multi-scale network, dubbed GridDehazeNet+, for single image dehazing. The proposed dehazing method does not rely on the Atmosphere Scattering Model (ASM), and an explanation as to why it is not necessarily performing the dimension reduction offered by this model is provided. GridDehazeNet+ consists of three modules: pre-processing, backbone, and post-processing. The trainable pre-processing module can generate learned inputs with better diversity and more pertinent features as compared to those derived inputs produced by hand-selected pre-processing methods. The backbone module implements multi-scale estimation with two major enhancements: 1) a novel grid structure that effectively alleviates the bottleneck issue via dense connections across different scales; 2) a spatial-channel attention block that can facilitate adaptive fusion by consolidating dehazing-relevant features. The post-processing module helps to reduce the artifacts in the final output. Due to domain shift, the model trained on synthetic data may not generalize well on real data. To address this issue, we shape the distribution of synthetic data to match that of real data, and use the resulting translated data to finetune our network. We also propose a novel intra-task knowledge transfer mechanism that can memorize and take advantage of synthetic domain knowledge to assist the learning process on the translated data. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art on several synthetic dehazing datasets, and achieves the superior performance on real-world hazy images after finetuning.

Near-field energy transfer between graphene and magneto-optic media

We consider the near-field radiative energy transfer between two separated parallel plates: graphene supported by a substrate and a magneto-optic medium. We first study the scenario in which the two plates have the same temperature. An electric current through the graphene gives rise to nonequilibrium fluctuations and induces energy transfer. Both the magnitude and direction of the energy flux can be controlled by the electric current and an in-plane magnetic field in the magneto-optic medium. This is due to the interplay between the nonreciprocal photon occupation number in the graphene and nonreciprocal surface modes in the magneto-optic plate. Furthermore, we report that a tunable thermoelectric current can be generated in the graphene in the presence of a temperature difference between the two plates.

Pseudo Supervised Monocular Depth Estimation with Teacher-Student Network

Despite recent improvement of supervised monocular depth estimation, the lack of high quality pixel-wise ground truth annotations has become a major hurdle for further progress. In this work, we propose a new unsupervised depth estimation method based on pseudo supervision mechanism by training a teacher-student network with knowledge distillation. It strategically integrates the advantages of supervised and unsupervised monocular depth estimation, as well as unsupervised binocular depth estimation. Specifically, the teacher network takes advantage of the effectiveness of binocular depth estimation to produce accurate disparity maps, which are then used as the pseudo ground truth to train the student network for monocular depth estimation. This effectively converts the problem of unsupervised learning to supervised learning. Our extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art on the KITTI benchmark.

Exploring Long Tail Visual Relationship Recognition with Large Vocabulary

Several approaches have been proposed in recent literature to alleviate the long-tail problem, mainly in object classification tasks. In this paper, we make the first large-scale study concerning the task of Long-Tail Visual Relationship Recognition (LTVRR). LTVRR aims at improving the learning of structured visual relationships that come from the long-tail (e.g., "rabbit grazing on grass"). In this setup, the subject, relation, and object classes each follow a long-tail distribution. To begin our study and make a future benchmark for the community, we introduce two LTVRR-related benchmarks, dubbed VG8K-LT and GQA-LT, built upon the widely used Visual Genome and GQA datasets. We use these benchmarks to study the performance of several state-of-the-art long-tail models on the LTVRR setup. Lastly, we propose a visiolinguistic hubless (VilHub) loss and a Mixup augmentation technique adapted to LTVRR setup, dubbed as RelMix. Both VilHub and RelMix can be easily integrated on top of existing models and despite being simple, our results show that they can remarkably improve the performance, especially on tail classes. Benchmarks, code, and models have been made available at: https://github.com/Vision-CAIR/LTVRR.

Adaptive Hierarchical Dual Consistency for Semi-Supervised Left Atrium Segmentation on Cross-Domain Data

Semi-supervised learning provides great significance in left atrium (LA) segmentation model learning with insufficient labelled data. Generalising semi-supervised learning to cross-domain data is of high importance to further improve model robustness. However, the widely existing distribution difference and sample mismatch between different data domains hinder the generalisation of semi-supervised learning. In this study, we alleviate these problems by proposing an Adaptive Hierarchical Dual Consistency (AHDC) for the semi-supervised LA segmentation on cross-domain data. The AHDC mainly consists of a Bidirectional Adversarial Inference module (BAI) and a Hierarchical Dual Consistency learning module (HDC). The BAI overcomes the difference of distributions and the sample mismatch between two different domains. It mainly learns two mapping networks adversarially to obtain two matched domains through mutual adaptation. The HDC investigates a hierarchical dual learning paradigm for cross-domain semi-supervised segmentation based on the obtained matched domains. It mainly builds two dual-modelling networks for mining the complementary information in both intra-domain and inter-domain. For the intra-domain learning, a consistency constraint is applied to the dual-modelling targets to exploit the complementary modelling information. For the inter-domain learning, a consistency constraint is applied to the LAs modelled by two dual-modelling networks to exploit the complementary knowledge among different data domains. We demonstrated the performance of our proposed AHDC on four 3D late gadolinium enhancement cardiac MR (LGE-CMR) datasets from different centres and a 3D CT dataset. Compared to other state-of-the-art methods, our proposed AHDC achieved higher segmentation accuracy, which indicated its capability in the cross-domain semi-supervised LA segmentation.

Formation of Magnetic Flux Rope during Solar Eruption. I. Evolution of Toroidal Flux and Reconnection Flux

Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) constitute the core structure of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), but hot debates remain on whether the MFR forms before or during solar eruptions. Furthermore, how flare reconnection shapes the erupting MFR is still elusive in three dimensions. Here we studied a new MHD simulation of CME initiation by tether-cutting magnetic reconnection in a single magnetic arcade. The simulation follows the whole life, including the birth and subsequent evolution, of an MFR during eruption. In the early phase, the MFR is partially separated from its ambient field by a magnetic quasi-separatrix layer (QSL) that has a double-J shaped footprint on the bottom surface. With the ongoing of the reconnection, the arms of the two J-shaped footprints continually separate from each other, and the hooks of the J shaped footprints expand and eventually become closed almost at the eruption peak time, and thereafter the MFR is fully separated from the un-reconnected field by the QSL. We further studied the evolution of the toroidal flux in the MFR and compared it with that of the reconnected flux. Our simulation reproduced an evolution pattern of increase-to-decrease of the toroidal flux, which is reported recently in observations of variations in flare ribbons and transient coronal dimming. The increase of toroidal flux is owing to the flare reconnection in the early phase that transforms the sheared arcade to twisted field lines, while its decrease is a result of reconnection between field lines in the interior of the MFR in the later phase.

Multiferroic properties of oxygen functionalized magnetic i-MXene

Two dimensional multiferroics inherit prominent physical properties from both low dimensional materials and magnetoelectric materials, and can go beyond their three dimensional counterparts for their unique structures. Here, based on density functional theory calculations, a MXene derivative, i.e., i-MXene (Ta$_{2/3}$Fe$_{1/3}$)$_2$CO$_2$, is predicted to be a type-I multiferroic material. Originated from the reliable $5d^0$ rule, its ferroelectricity is robust, with a moderate polarization up to $\sim12.33$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ along the a-axis, which can be easily switched and may persist above room temperature. Its magnetic ground state is layered antiferromagnetism. Although it is a type-I multiferroic material, its Néel temperature can be significantly tuned by the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition, manifesting a kind of intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling. Such magnetoelectric effect is originated from the conventional magnetostriction, but unexpectedly magnified by the exchange frustration. Our work not only reveals a nontrivial magnetoelectric mechanism, but also provides a strategy to search for more multiferroics in the two dimensional limit.

Learning for Unconstrained Space-Time Video Super-Resolution

Recent years have seen considerable research activities devoted to video enhancement that simultaneously increases temporal frame rate and spatial resolution. However, the existing methods either fail to explore the intrinsic relationship between temporal and spatial information or lack flexibility in the choice of final temporal/spatial resolution. In this work, we propose an unconstrained space-time video super-resolution network, which can effectively exploit space-time correlation to boost performance. Moreover, it has complete freedom in adjusting the temporal frame rate and spatial resolution through the use of the optical flow technique and a generalized pixelshuffle operation. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method not only outperforms the state-of-the-art, but also requires far fewer parameters and less running time.

Triple Andreev dot chains in semiconductor nanowires

Kitaev chain is a theoretical model of a one-dimensional topological superconductor with Majorana zero modes at the two ends of the chain. With the goal of emulating this model, we build a chain of three quantum dots in a semiconductor nanowire. We observe Andreev bound states in each of the three dots and study their magnetic field and gate voltage dependence. Theory indicates that triple dot states acquire Majorana polarization when Andreev states in all three dots reach zero energy in a narrow range of magnetic field. In our device Andreev states in one of the dots reach zero energy at a lower field than in other two, placing the Majorana regime out of reach. Devices with greater uniformity or with independent control over superconductor-semiconductor coupling should can realize the Kitaev chain with high yield. Due to its overall tunability and design flexibility the quantum dot system remains promising for quantum simulation of interesting models and in particular for modular topological quantum devices.

Anti-chiral edge states and hinge states based on the Haldane model

Different from the chiral edge states, antichiral edge states propagating in the same direction on the opposite edges are theoretically proposed based on the modified Haldane model, which is recently experimentally realized in photonic crystal and electric lattice systems. Here, we instead present that the antichiral edge states in the two-dimensional system can also be achieved based on the original Haldane model by combining two subsystems with the opposite chirality. Most importantly, by stacking these two-dimensional systems into three-dimension, it is found that the copropagating antichiral hinge states localized on the two opposite diagonal hinge cases of the system can be implemented. Interestingly, the location of antichiral hinge states can be tuned via hopping parameters along the third dimension. By investigating the local Chern number/layer Chern number and transmission against random disorders, we confirm that the proposed antichiral edge states and hinge states are topologically protected and robust against disorders. Our proposed model systems are expected to be realized in photonic crystal and electric lattice systems.

Stability of Attached Transonic Shocks in Steady Potential Flow past Three-Dimensional Wedges

We develop a new approach and employ it to establish the global existence and nonlinear structural stability of attached weak transonic shocks in steady potential flow past three-dimensional wedges; in particular, the restriction that the perturbation is away from the wedge edge in the previous results is removed. One of the key ingredients is to identify a "good" direction of the boundary operator of a boundary condition of the shock along the wedge edge, based on the non-obliqueness of the boundary condition for the weak shock on the edge. With the identification of this direction, an additional boundary condition on the wedge edge can be assigned to make sure that the shock is attached on the edge and linearly stable under small perturbation. Based on the linear stability, we introduce an iteration scheme and prove that there exists a unique fixed point of the iteration scheme, which leads to the global existence and nonlinear structural stability of the attached weak transonic shock. This approach is based on neither the hodograph transformation nor the spectrum analysis, and should be useful for other problems with similar difficulties.

Phase competition and negative piezoelectricity in interlayer-sliding ferroelectric ZrI$_2$

The so-called interlayer-sliding ferroelectricity was recently proposed as an unconventional route to pursuit electric polarity in van der Waals multi-layers, which was already experimentally confirmed in WTe$_2$ bilayer even though it is metallic. Very recently, another van der Waals system, i.e., the ZrI$_2$ bilayer, was predicted to exhibit the interlayer-sliding ferroelectricity with both in-plane and out-of-plane polarizations [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{103}, 165420 (2021)]. Here the ZrI$_2$ bulk is studied, which owns two competitive phases ($α$ \textit{vs} $β$), both of which are derived from the common parent $s$-phase. The $β$-ZrI$_2$ owns a considerable out-of-plane polarization ($0.39$ $μ$C/cm$^2$), while its in-plane component is fully compensated. Their proximate energies provide the opportunity to tune the ground state phase by moderate hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial strain. Furthermore, the negative longitudinal piezoelectricity in $β$-ZrI$_2$ is dominantly contributed by the enhanced dipole of ZrI$_2$ layers as a unique characteristic of interlayer-sliding ferroelectricity, which is different from many other layered ferroelectrics with negative longitudinal piezoelectricity like CuInP$_2$S$_6$.

DW-GAN: A Discrete Wavelet Transform GAN for NonHomogeneous Dehazing

Hazy images are often subject to color distortion, blurring, and other visible quality degradation. Some existing CNN-based methods have great performance on removing homogeneous haze, but they are not robust in non-homogeneous case. The reasons are mainly in two folds. Firstly, due to the complicated haze distribution, texture details are easy to be lost during the dehazing process. Secondly, since the training pairs are hard to be collected, training on limited data can easily lead to over-fitting problem. To tackle these two issues, we introduce a novel dehazing network using 2D discrete wavelet transform, namely DW-GAN. Specifically, we propose a two-branch network to deal with the aforementioned problems. By utilizing wavelet transform in DWT branch, our proposed method can retain more high-frequency knowledge in feature maps. In order to prevent over-fitting, ImageNet pre-trained Res2Net is adopted in the knowledge adaptation branch. Owing to the robust feature representations of ImageNet pre-training, the generalization ability of our network is improved dramatically. Finally, a patch-based discriminator is used to reduce artifacts of the restored images. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-arts quantitatively and qualitatively.

JAS-GAN: Generative Adversarial Network Based Joint Atrium and Scar Segmentations on Unbalanced Atrial Targets

Automated and accurate segmentations of left atrium (LA) and atrial scars from late gadolinium-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE CMR) images are in high demand for quantifying atrial scars. The previous quantification of atrial scars relies on a two-phase segmentation for LA and atrial scars due to their large volume difference (unbalanced atrial targets). In this paper, we propose an inter-cascade generative adversarial network, namely JAS-GAN, to segment the unbalanced atrial targets from LGE CMR images automatically and accurately in an end-to-end way. Firstly, JAS-GAN investigates an adaptive attention cascade to automatically correlate the segmentation tasks of the unbalanced atrial targets. The adaptive attention cascade mainly models the inclusion relationship of the two unbalanced atrial targets, where the estimated LA acts as the attention map to adaptively focus on the small atrial scars roughly. Then, an adversarial regularization is applied to the segmentation tasks of the unbalanced atrial targets for making a consistent optimization. It mainly forces the estimated joint distribution of LA and atrial scars to match the real ones. We evaluated the performance of our JAS-GAN on a 3D LGE CMR dataset with 192 scans. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our proposed approach yielded better segmentation performance (Average Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) values of 0.946 and 0.821 for LA and atrial scars, respectively), which indicated the effectiveness of our proposed approach for segmenting unbalanced atrial targets.

A Two-branch Neural Network for Non-homogeneous Dehazing via Ensemble Learning

Recently, there has been rapid and significant progress on image dehazing. Many deep learning based methods have shown their superb performance in handling homogeneous dehazing problems. However, we observe that even if a carefully designed convolutional neural network (CNN) can perform well on large-scaled dehazing benchmarks, the network usually fails on the non-homogeneous dehazing datasets introduced by NTIRE challenges. The reasons are mainly in two folds. Firstly, due to its non-homogeneous nature, the non-uniformly distributed haze is harder to be removed than the homogeneous haze. Secondly, the research challenge only provides limited data (there are only 25 training pairs in NH-Haze 2021 dataset). Thus, learning the mapping from the domain of hazy images to that of clear ones based on very limited data is extremely hard. To this end, we propose a simple but effective approach for non-homogeneous dehazing via ensemble learning. To be specific, we introduce a two-branch neural network to separately deal with the aforementioned problems and then map their distinct features by a learnable fusion tail. We show extensive experimental results to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
