Action Recognition for Depth Video using Multi-view Dynamic Images

Dynamic imaging is a recently proposed action description paradigm for simultaneously capturing motion and temporal evolution information, particularly in the context of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Compared with optical flow for motion characterization, dynamic imaging exhibits superior efficiency and compactness. Inspired by the success of dynamic imaging in RGB video, this study extends it to the depth domain. To better exploit three-dimensional (3D) characteristics, multi-view dynamic images are proposed. In particular, the raw depth video is densely projected with respect to different virtual imaging viewpoints by rotating the virtual camera within the 3D space. Subsequently, dynamic images are extracted from the obtained multi-view depth videos and multi-view dynamic images are thus constructed from these images. Accordingly, more view-tolerant visual cues can be involved. A novel CNN model is then proposed to perform feature learning on multi-view dynamic images. Particularly, the dynamic images from different views share the same convolutional layers but correspond to different fully connected layers. This is aimed at enhancing the tuning effectiveness on shallow convolutional layers by alleviating the gradient vanishing problem. Moreover, as the spatial occurrence variation of the actions may impair the CNN, an action proposal approach is also put forth. In experiments, the proposed approach can achieve state-of-the-art performance on three challenging datasets.

Lattice-based Robust Distributed Source Coding

In this paper, we propose a lattice-based robust distributed source coding system for two correlated sources and provide a detailed performance analysis under the high resolution assumption. It is shown, among other things, that, in the asymptotic regime where 1) the side distortion approaches 0 and 2) the ratio between the central and side distortions approaches 0, our scheme is capable of achieving the information-theoretic limit of quadratic multiple description coding when the two sources are identical, whereas a variant of the random coding scheme by Chen and Berger with Gaussian codes has a performance loss of 0.5 bits relative to this limit.

Similarity model for corner roll in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection

The corner roll (CR) in the Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection accounts for the behaviors of heat transport and convection flow at the corner. Streamlines of the three-dimensional direct numerical simulations for $10^8<Ra<5\times10^9$ show that CR presents well-defined similarity and multi-layer structure. A stream function for CR is developed by homotopy and the structure ensemble dynamics. The model presents the scaling of Reynolds number of corner roll $Re_{cr}\sim Ra^{1/4}$. Scaling of CR scale $r = 0.77 Ra^{-0.085}$ indicates strong near-wall shearing induced by wind and provides a probability of the `ultimate regime' at high $Ra$.

Keyphrase Generation with Correlation Constraints

In this paper, we study automatic keyphrase generation. Although conventional approaches to this task show promising results, they neglect correlation among keyphrases, resulting in duplication and coverage issues. To solve these problems, we propose a new sequence-to-sequence architecture for keyphrase generation named CorrRNN, which captures correlation among multiple keyphrases in two ways. First, we employ a coverage vector to indicate whether the word in the source document has been summarized by previous phrases to improve the coverage for keyphrases. Second, preceding phrases are taken into account to eliminate duplicate phrases and improve result coherence. Experiment results show that our model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art method on benchmark datasets in terms of both accuracy and diversity.

Robust Distributed Compression of Symmetrically Correlated Gaussian Sources

Consider a lossy compression system with $\ell$ distributed encoders and a centralized decoder. Each encoder compresses its observed source and forwards the compressed data to the decoder for joint reconstruction of the target signals under the mean squared error distortion constraint. It is assumed that the observed sources can be expressed as the sum of the target signals and the corruptive noises, which are generated independently from two symmetric multivariate Gaussian distributions. Depending on the parameters of such distributions, the rate-distortion limit of this system is characterized either completely or at least for sufficiently low distortions. The results are further extended to the robust distributed compression setting, where the outputs of a subset of encoders may also be used to produce a non-trivial reconstruction of the corresponding target signals. In particular, we obtain in the high-resolution regime a precise characterization of the minimum achievable reconstruction distortion based on the outputs of $k+1$ or more encoders when every $k$ out of all $\ell$ encoders are operated collectively in the same mode that is greedy in the sense of minimizing the distortion incurred by the reconstruction of the corresponding $k$ target signals with respect to the average rate of these $k$ encoders.

Outage Analysis of Relay-Assisted mmWave Cellular Systems Employing JSDM

In this paper, the outage performance of relay-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular systems employing joint spatial division and multiplexing (JSDM) is investigated. It is assumed that the macro base station (BS) equipped with a large number of antennas serves the single antenna pico BS (as a relay) and users simultaneously, and that the pico BS is located at the edge of the macro cell. Theoretical analysis of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) outage probability of each user is first obtained. The cell SINR outage probability is then derived. Under the noise-limited assumption, simplified closed-form expressions of the outage probability are given as well. Simulation results demonstrating the performance improvement due to the relay introduced by the pico BS are provided. Overall, the impact of deploying pico BS as a relay in the mmWave cellular systems is characterized.

Multiview Two-Task Recursive Attention Model for Left Atrium and Atrial Scars Segmentation

Late Gadolinium Enhanced Cardiac MRI (LGE-CMRI) for detecting atrial scars in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients has recently emerged as a promising technique to stratify patients, guide ablation therapy and predict treatment success. Visualisation and quantification of scar tissues require a segmentation of both the left atrium (LA) and the high intensity scar regions from LGE-CMRI images. These two segmentation tasks are challenging due to the cancelling of healthy tissue signal, low signal-to-noise ratio and often limited image quality in these patients. Most approaches require manual supervision and/or a second bright-blood MRI acquisition for anatomical segmentation. Segmenting both the LA anatomy and the scar tissues automatically from a single LGE-CMRI acquisition is highly in demand. In this study, we proposed a novel fully automated multiview two-task (MVTT) recursive attention model working directly on LGE-CMRI images that combines a sequential learning and a dilated residual learning to segment the LA (including attached pulmonary veins) and delineate the atrial scars simultaneously via an innovative attention model. Compared to other state-of-the-art methods, the proposed MVTT achieves compelling improvement, enabling to generate a patient-specific anatomical and atrial scar assessment model.

Sensitivity of Displacement Detection for a Particle Levitated in the Doughnut Beam

Displacement detection of a sphere particle in focused laser beams with quadrant photodetector (QPD) provides a fast and high precision way to determine the particle location. In contrast to the traditional Gaussian beams, the sensitivity of displacement detection using various doughnut beams are investigated. The sensitivity improvement for large sphere particles along the longitudinal direction is reported. With appropriate vortex charge $l$ of the doughnut beams, they can outperform the Gaussian beam to get more than one order higher sensitivity and thus have potential applications in various high precision measurement. By using the levitating doughnut beam itself to detect the particle displacement, the result will also facilitate the recent proposal of levitating a particle in doughnut beams to suppress the light absorption.

Crystal Instabilities and Elastic Responses of Metals under Extreme Strain Rates

Despite of some progresses in investigating the roles of the higher-order strain gradients on elastic stabilities of solids, the physical nature on the higher-order elastic instabilities of crystals, especially under extreme strain rates, is still a mystery. In this work, a generalized elastic instability criterion for infinite crystals is consistently established at both continuum and atom level under frameworks of a higher-order phenomenological theory. The established criterion could consistently reproduce the well-known strain-based lattice instability criteria, such as modified Born criterion, Λ-criterion, as well as a higher-order one proposed by Bardenhagen et al. Our results show that modified Born criterion is not as precise as the Λ-criterion under heterogeneous stress states. Different from the higher-order criterion, contributions from the third order gradients of displacements are considered so that the well-known sign paradox in the first strain-gradient theory could be reproduced. According to microscopic comprehensions on the higher-order phenomenological theory, the sign paradox is well clarified. Finally, the established criterion is employed to investigate the elastic stabilities of single crystalline copper and aluminum. The obtained results could well explain the singularities of elastic responses of the two metals under ramp compressions.

A Geometric Property of Relative Entropy and the Universal Threshold Phenomenon for Binary-Input Channels with Noisy State Information at the Encoder

Tight lower and upper bounds on the ratio of relative entropies of two probability distributions with respect to a common third one are established, where the three distributions are collinear in the standard $(n-1)$-simplex. These bounds are leveraged to analyze the capacity of an arbitrary binary-input channel with noisy causal state information (provided by a side channel) at the encoder and perfect state information at the decoder, and in particular to determine the exact universal threshold on the noise measure of the side channel, above which the capacity is the same as that with no encoder side information.

Disintegration of an Eruptive Filament via Interactions with Quasi-Separatrix Layers

The disintegration of solar filaments via mass drainage is a frequently observed phenomenon during a variety of filament activities. It is generally considered that the draining of dense filament material is directed by both gravity and magnetic field, yet the detailed process remains elusive. Here we report on a partial filament eruption during which filament material drains downward to the surface not only along the filament's legs, but to a remote flare ribbon through a fan-out curtain-like structure. It is found that the magnetic configuration is characterized by two conjoining dome-like quasi-sepratrix layers (QSLs). The filament is located underneath one QSL dome, whose footprint apparently bounds the major flare ribbons resulting from the filament eruption, whereas the remote flare ribbon matches well with the other QSL dome's far-side footprint. We suggest that the interaction of the filament with the overlying QSLs results in the splitting and disintegration of the filament.

Successive Wyner-Ziv Coding for the Binary CEO Problem under Log-Loss

An $l$-link binary CEO problem is considered in this paper. We present a practical encoding and decoding scheme for this problem employing the graph-based codes. A successive coding scheme is proposed for converting an $l$-link binary CEO problem to the $(2l-1)$ single binary Wyner-Ziv (WZ) problems. By using the compound LDGM-LDPC codes, the theoretical bound of each binary WZ is asymptotically achievable. Our proposed decoder successively decodes the received data by employing the well-known Sum-Product (SP) algorithm and leverages them to reconstruct the source. The sum-rate distortion performance of our proposed coding scheme is compared with the theoretical bounds under the logarithmic loss (log-loss) criterion.

Efficient Parallel Connected Components Labeling with a Coarse-to-fine Strategy

This paper proposes a new parallel approach to solve connected components on a 2D binary image implemented with CUDA. We employ the following strategies to accelerate neighborhood exploration after dividing an input image into independent blocks. In the local labeling stage, a coarse-labeling algorithm, including row-column connection and label-equivalence list unification, is applied first to sort out the mess of an initialized local label map; a refinement algorithm is then introduced to merge separated sub-regions from a single component. In the block merge stage, we scan the pixels located on the boundary of each block instead of solving the connectivity of all the pixels. With the proposed method, the length of label-equivalence lists is compressed, and the number of memory accesses is reduced. Thus, the efficiency of connected components labeling is improved. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the other approaches between $29\%$ and $80\%$ on average.

Shock-induced plasticity of semi-coherent 111 Cu-Ni multilayers

Using atomistic simulations, dislocation dynamics modeling, and continuum elastic-plastic stress-wave theory, we present a systematic investigation on shock-induced plasticity in semi-coherent CuNi multilayers. The features of stress wave evolutions in the multilayers, including wave-front stress attenuation and strong interfacial discontinuities, are revealed by atomistic simulations. Continuum models are proposed to explain the shockwave propagation features. The simulations provide insight into microplasticity behaviors including interactions between lattice and misfit dislocations. The formation of hybrid Lomer-Cottrell locks through the attraction and combination of lattice and misfit dislocations is a major mechanism for trapping gliding lattice dislocations at interfaces. The relationship between dislocation activity and dynamic stress wave evolution history is explored. The hybrid Lomer-Cottrell locks can dissociate under shock compression or reverse yielding. This dissociation facilitates slip transmission. The influence of coherent stress causes direction dependency in the slip transmission: a lattice dislocation is transmitted more smoothly across an interface from Ni to Cu than from Cu to Ni. The interaction forces between lattice and misfit dislocations are calculated using dislocation dynamics code. Lattice dislocation nucleation from semi-coherent interfaces under shock compression is also reported.

On the Magnetic and Energy Characteristics of Recurrent Homologous Jets from An Emerging Flux

In this paper, we present the detailed analysis of recurrent homologous jets originating from an emerging negative magnetic flux at the edge of an Active Region. The observed jets show multi-thermal features. Their evolution shows high consistence with the characteristic parameters of the emerging flux, suggesting that with more free magnetic energy, the eruptions tend to be more violent, frequent and blowout-like. The average temperature, average electron number density and axial speed are found to be similar for different jets, indicating that they should have been formed by plasmas from similar origins. Statistical analysis of the jets and their footpoint region conditions reveals a strong positive relationship between the footpoint-region total 131 Å intensity enhancement and jets' length/width. Stronger linearly positive relationships also exist between the total intensity enhancement/thermal energy of the footpoint regions and jets' mass/kinetic/thermal energy, with higher cross-correlation coefficients. All the above results, together, confirm the direct relationship between the magnetic reconnection and the jets, and validate the important role of magnetic reconnection in transporting large amount of free magnetic energy into jets. It is also suggested that there should be more free energy released during the magnetic reconnection of blowout than of standard jet events.

Stability and Asymptotic Behavior of Transonic Flows Past Wedges for the Full Euler Equations

The existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of steady transonic flows past a curved wedge, involving transonic shocks, governed by the two-dimensional full Euler equations are established. The stability of both weak and strong transonic shocks under the perturbation of both the upstream supersonic flow and the wedge boundary is proved. The problem is formulated as a one-phase free boundary problem, in which the transonic shock is treated as a free boundary. The full Euler equations are decomposed into two algebraic equations and a first-order elliptic system of two equations in Lagrangian coordinates. With careful elliptic estimates by using appropriate weighted Hölder norms, the iteration map is defined and analyzed, and the existence of its fixed point is established by performing the Schauder fixed point argument. The careful analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the solutions reveals particular characters of the full Euler equations.

Binary CEO Problem under Log-Loss with BSC Test-Channel Model

In this paper, we propose an efficient coding scheme for the two-link binary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) problem under logarithmic loss criterion. The exact rate-distortion bound for a two-link binary CEO problem under the logarithmic loss has been obtained by Courtade and Weissman. We propose an encoding scheme based on compound LDGM-LDPC codes to achieve the theoretical bounds. In the proposed encoding, a binary quantizer using LDGM codes and a syndrome-coding employing LDPC codes are applied. An iterative joint decoding is also designed as a fusion center. The proposed CEO decoder is based on the sum-product algorithm and a soft estimator.

Optical trapping of anti-reflection coating-coated spheres

It was theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated that anti-reflection coating allows one to trap a high dielectric sphere, at the same time enhancing the transverse optical force. Here, by explicitly calculating the gradient force and the scattering force, we rigorously show that these were mainly consequences of the reduction in scattering force due to the suppression of backward scattering, and enhancement in gradient force due to the increased in overall particle size. The reduction of scattering force can be understood within a ray optics theory and also the Mie theory. The coating approach only works for a spherical particle trapped by an aplanatic beam, and it does not work in general.
