Terahertz Multi-User Massive MIMO with Intelligent Reflecting Surface: Beam Training and Hybrid Beamforming

Terahertz (THz) communications open a new frontier for the wireless network thanks to their dramatically wider available bandwidth compared to the current micro-wave and forthcoming millimeter-wave communications. However, due to the short length of THz waves, they also suffer from severe path attenuation and poor diffraction. To compensate the THz-induced propagation loss, this paper proposes to combine two promising techniques, viz., massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), in THz multi-user communications, considering their significant beamforming and aperture gains. Nonetheless, channel estimation and low-cost beamforming turn out to be two main obstacles to realizing this combination, due to the passivity of IRS for sending/receiving pilot signals and the large-scale use of expensive RF chains in massive MIMO. In view of these limitations, this paper first develops a cooperative beam training scheme to facilitate the channel estimation with IRS. In particular, we design two different hierarchical codebooks for the proposed training procedure, which are able to balance between the robustness against noise and searching complexity. Based on the training results, we further propose two cost-efficient hybrid beamforming (HB) designs for both single-user and multi-user scenarios, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint beam training and HB scheme is able to achieve close performance to the optimal fully digital beamforming (FDB) which is implemented even under perfect channel state information (CSI).

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Constant-Envelope Wireless Power Transfer

By reconfiguring the propagation environment of electromagnetic waves artificially, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been regarded as a promising and revolutionary hardware technology to improve the energy and spectrum efficiency of wireless networks. In this paper, we study a RIS aided multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless power transfer (WPT) system, where the transmitter is equipped with a constant-envelope analog beamformer. First, we maximize the total received power of the users by jointly optimizing the beamformer at transmitter and the phase-shifts at the RIS, and propose two alternating optimization based suboptimal solutions by leveraging the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and the successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques respectively. Then, considering the user fairness, we formulate another problem to maximize the total received power subject to the users' individual minimum received power constraints. A low complexity iterative algorithm based on both alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and SCA techniques is proposed to solve this problem. In the case of multiple users, we further analyze the asymptotic performance as the number of RIS elements approaches infinity, and bound the performance loss caused by RIS phase quantization. Numerical results show the correctness of the analysis results and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

A gamma-ray periodic modulation in Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae

The Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae was firstly detected in gamma-rays by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the \emph{Fermi} Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and the gamma-ray emission has been widely attributed to the millisecond pulsars. In this work, we analyze the Fermi-LAT pass 8 data ranging from 2008 August to 2017 May and report the detection of a modulation with a period of $18.416\pm0.008$ hours at a significance level of $\sim 4.8σ$. This is the first time to detect a significant modulation with a period much longer than that of millisecond pulsars in gamma-rays from Globular Clusters. The periodic modulation signal appears in the {\it Swift}-BAT data as well. The phase-folded Chandra X-ray light curve of a point source may have provided an additional clue.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Millimeter Wave Communications: Joint Active and Passive Precoding Design

Millimeter wave (MmWave) communications is capable of supporting multi-gigabit wireless access thanks to its abundant spectrum resource. However, the severe path loss and high directivity make it vulnerable to blockage events, which can be frequent in indoor and dense urban environments. To address this issue, in this paper, we introduce intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) as a new technology to provide effective reflected paths to enhance coverage of mmWave signals. In this framework, we study joint active and passive precoding design for IRS-assisted mmWave systems, where multiple IRSs are deployed to assist the data transmission from a base station (BS) to a single-antenna receiver. Our objective is to maximize the received signal power by jointly optimizing the transmit precoding vector at the BS and the phase shift parameters used by IRSs for passive beamforming. Although such an optimization problem is generally non-convex, we show that, by exploiting some important characteristics of mmWave channels, an optimal closed-form solution can be derived for the single IRS case and a near-optimal analytical solution can be obtained for the multi-IRS case. Our analysis reveals that the received signal power increases quadratically with the number of reflecting elements for both the single IRS and multi-IRS cases. Simulation results are included to verify the optimality and near-optimality of our proposed solutions. Results also show that IRSs can help create effective virtual LOS paths and thus substantially improve robustness against blockages in mmWave communications.

Joint Transceiver and Large Intelligent Surface Design for Massive MIMO MmWave Systems

Large intelligent surface (LIS) has recently emerged as a potential low-cost solution to reshape the wireless propagation environment for improving the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we consider a downlink millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system, where an LIS is deployed to assist the downlink data transmission from a base station (BS) to a user equipment (UE). Both the BS and the UE are equipped with a large number of antennas, and a hybrid analog/digital precoding/combining structure is used to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption. We aim to maximize the spectral efficiency by jointly optimizing the LIS's reflection coefficients and the hybrid precoder (combiner) at the BS (UE). To tackle this non-convex problem, we reformulate the complex optimization problem into a much more friendly optimization problem by exploiting the inherent structure of the effective (cascade) mmWave channel. A manifold optimization (MO)-based algorithm is then developed. Simulation results show that by carefully devising LIS's reflection coefficients, our proposed method can help realize a favorable propagation environment with a small channel matrix condition number. Besides, it can achieve a performance comparable to those of state-of-the-art algorithms, while at a much lower computational complexity.

Numerically investigating the peculiar periphery of a supernova remnant in the medium with a density gradient: the case of RCW 103

The young shell-type supernova remnant RCW 103 has peculiar properties in the X-ray morphology obtained with Chandra. The southeastern shell is more brighter in the X-rays, and the curved border of the shell in this region is more flatten than the other part. We investigate the formation of the peculiar periphery of the supernova remnant RCW 103 using 3D hydrodynamical simulation. Assuming that the supernova ejecta has been evolved in the medium with a density gradient, the detected shape of the periphery can be generally reproduced. For RCW 103, with the ejecta mass of $3.0~M_{\odot}$, the density of the background material of $2.0~\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, and a gradient of $3.3 - 4.0 ~\mathrm{cm}^{-3} \mathrm{pc}^{-1}$, the X-ray periphery can be generally reproduced. The simulation turned out that the asymmetry of the SNR RCW 103 is mainly due to the inhomogeneous medium with a density gradient.

Investigating the multiband nonthermal emission of the 100 TeV source eHWC J2019$+$368 with a pulsar wind nebula scenario

eHWC J2019+368 is one of the sources emitting $γ$-rays with energies higher than 100 TeV based on the recent measurement with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC), and the origin is still in debate. The pulsar PSR J2021$+$3651 is spatially coincident with the TeV source. We investigate theoretically whether the multiband nonthermal emission of eHWC J2019+368 can originate from the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G75.2$+$0.1 powered by PSR J2021$+$3651. In the model, the spin-down power of the pulsar is transferred to high-energy particles and magnetic field in the nebula. As the particles with an energy distribution of either a broken power-law or a power-law continually injected into the nebula, the multiband nonthermal emission is produced via synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering. The spectral energy distribution of the nebula from the model with the reasonable parameters is generally consistent with the detected radio, X-ray and TeV $γ$-ray fluxes. Our study supports that the PWN has the ability to produce the TeV $γ$-rays of eHWC J2019+368, and the most energetic particles in the nebula have energies up to about $0.4$ PeV.

Compressed Channel Estimation and Joint Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Millimeter Wave Systems

In this paper, we consider channel estimation for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, where an IRS is deployed to assist the data transmission from the base station (BS) to a user. It is shown that for the purpose of joint active and passive beamforming, the knowledge of a large-size cascade channel matrix needs to be acquired. To reduce the training overhead, the inherent sparsity in mmWave channels is exploited. By utilizing properties of Katri-Rao and Kronecker products, we find a sparse representation of the cascade channel and convert cascade channel estimation into a sparse signal recovery problem. Simulation results show that our proposed method can provide an accurate channel estimate and achieve a substantial training overhead reduction.

Investigating the morphology of the supernova remnant G349.7+00.2 in the medium with a density gradient

G349.7 + 00.2 is a young Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) with a mushroom morphology in radio and X-rays, and it has been detected across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio to high energy $γ$-rays. Moreover, the remnant is interacting with a molecular cloud based on the observations in the radio and infrared band. The reason for the formation of the periphery and the dynamical evolution of the remnant are investigated using 3D hydrodynamical (HD) simulations. Under the assumption that the supernova ejecta is evolved in the medium with a density gradient, the shell is composed of two hemispheres with different radiuses, and the smaller hemisphere is in relatively dense media. The resulting periphery of remnant is consistent with detected ones, and it can be concluded that the peculiar periphery of G349.7+00.2 can be reproduced as the remnants interacting with the medium with a density gradient.

Post-Training Piecewise Linear Quantization for Deep Neural Networks

Quantization plays an important role in the energy-efficient deployment of deep neural networks on resource-limited devices. Post-training quantization is highly desirable since it does not require retraining or access to the full training dataset. The well-established uniform scheme for post-training quantization achieves satisfactory results by converting neural networks from full-precision to 8-bit fixed-point integers. However, it suffers from significant performance degradation when quantizing to lower bit-widths. In this paper, we propose a piecewise linear quantization (PWLQ) scheme to enable accurate approximation for tensor values that have bell-shaped distributions with long tails. Our approach breaks the entire quantization range into non-overlapping regions for each tensor, with each region being assigned an equal number of quantization levels. Optimal breakpoints that divide the entire range are found by minimizing the quantization error. Compared to state-of-the-art post-training quantization methods, experimental results show that our proposed method achieves superior performance on image classification, semantic segmentation, and object detection with minor overhead.

Beamforming Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO: A Sum-Path-Gain Maximization Approach

Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as an appealing technique that enables wireless communications with low hardware cost and low power consumption. In this letter, we consider an IRS-assisted point-to-point multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system, where a source communicates with its destination with the help of an IRS. Our goal is to maximize the spectral efficiency of this system by jointly optimizing the (active) precoding at the source and the (passive) phase shifters (PSs) at the IRS. However, this turns out to be an intractable mixed integer non-convex optimization problem. To circumvent the intractability, we propose a new sum-path-gain maximization (SPGM) criterion to obtain a high-quality and efficient suboptimal solution to this problem. Specifically, the PSs are first designed based on a simplified optimization problem, which aims to maximize the sum-gains of the spatial paths between the source and the destination. Then, a low-complexity alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is utilized to solve this simplified problem. Finally, with the above obtained PSs, the source precoding is derived by performing the singular value decomposition (SVD) on the effective channel between the source and the destination. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve near-optimal performance.

Joint Active and Passive Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we study the problem of joint active and passive beamforming for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted massive MIMO systems, where multiple IRSs equipped with a large number of passive elements are deployed to assist a base station (BS) to simultaneously serve a small number of single-antenna users in the same time-frequency resource. Our objective is to maximize the minimum signal to interference plus noise (SINR) at users by jointly optimizing the transmit precoding vector at the BS and phase shift parameters at IRSs. We show that an interesting automatic interference cancelation (AIC) property holds asymptotically as the number of passive elements approaches infinity, i.e., when an IRS is optimally tuned to serve a certain user, this IRS will become interference-free to other users. By utilizing this property, the max-min problem can be converted into an IRS-user association problem, where the objective is to determine which IRSs are assigned for each user. An exhaustive search scheme and a greedy search scheme are proposed to solve the IRS-user association problem. Our theoretical analysis reveals that our proposed solution attains an SINR that scales quadratically with the number of reflecting elements. Also, our theoretical result suggests that even with a moderate number of active antennas at the BS, a massive MIMO like gain can be achieved by increasing the number of passive reflecting elements, thus significantly reducing the energy consumption at the BS. Simulation results are provided to corroborate our theoretical results and to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution.

Numerically investigating the morphology of the supernova remnant SN 1006 in the ambient medium with a density discontinuity

Multiband observations on the type Ia supernova remnant SN 1006 indicate peculiar properties in its morphologies of emission in the radio, optical and X-ray bands. In the hard X-rays, the remnant is bilateral with two opposite bright limbs with prominent protrusions. Moreover, a filament has been detected at the radio, optical and soft X-ray wavelengthes. The reason for these peculiar features in the morphologies of the remnant is investigated using 3D HD simulations. With the assumption that the supernova ejecta is evolved in the ambient medium with a density discontinuity, the radius of the remnant's boundary is smaller in the tenuous medium, and the shell consists of two hemispheres with different radiuses. Along particular line of sights, protrusions appear on the periphery of the remnants since the emission from the edge of the hemisphere with a larger radius is located outside that from the shell of the small hemisphere. Furthermore, the northwest filament of SN 1006 arises as a result of the intersection of the line of sight and the shocked material near the edges of the two hemispheres. It can be concluded that the features that the protrusions on the northeast and southwest limbs and the northwest filament in the morphologies of SN 1006 can be reproduced as the remnants interacting with the medium with a density discontinuity.

Joint Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Millimeter Wave Communications

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are evolving as a promising technology to meet the ever increasing data rate requirements. However, high directivity and severe path loss make it vulnerable to blockages, which could be frequent in indoor or urban environments. To address this issue, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are introduced to provide additional adjustable reflected paths. Most prior works assume that elements of IRSs have an infinite phase resolution, which is difficult to be realized in practical systems. In this paper, IRSs with low-resolution phase shifters are considered. We aim to maximize the receive signal power at the user by jointly optimizing discrete phase shifts of IRSs and the transmit beamforming vector at the base station for mmWave downlink systems. An analytical near-optimal solution is developed by exploiting some important characteristics of mmWave channels. Our theoretical analysis reveals that low-resolution phase shifters can still achieve a receive signal power that increases quadratically with the number of reflecting elements. Simulation results are provided to corroborate our analysis and show the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Fast Compressed Power Spectrum Estimation: Towards A Practical Solution for Wideband Spectrum Sensing

There has been a growing interest in wideband spectrum sensing due to its applications in cognitive radios and electronic surveillance. To overcome the sampling rate bottleneck for wideband spectrum sensing, in this paper, we study the problem of compressed power spectrum estimation whose objective is to reconstruct the power spectrum of a wide-sense stationary signal based on sub-Nyquist samples. By exploring the sampling structure inherent in the multicoset sampling scheme, we develop a computationally efficient method for power spectrum reconstruction. An important advantage of our proposed method over existing compressed power spectrum estimation methods is that our proposed method, whose primary computational task consists of fast Fourier transform (FFT), has a very low computational complexity. Such a merit makes it possible to efficiently implement the proposed algorithm in a practical field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based system for real-time wideband spectrum sensing. Our proposed method also provides a new perspective on the power spectrum recovery condition, which leads to a result similar to what was reported in prior works. Simulation results are presented to show the computational efficiency and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Early acceleration of electrons and protons at the nonrelativistic quasiparallel shocks with different obliquity angles

The early acceleration of protons and electrons in the nonrelativistic collisionless shocks with three obliquities are investigated through 1D particle-in-cell simulations. In the simulations, the charged particles possessing a velocity of $0.2\, c$ flow towards a reflecting boundary, and the shocks with a sonic Mach number of $13.4$ and a Alfven Mach number of $16.5$ in the downstream shock frame are generated. In these quasi-parallel shocks with the obliquity angles $θ= 15^\circ$, $30^\circ$, and $45^\circ$, some of the protons and the electrons can be injected into the acceleration processes, and their downstream spectra in the momentum space show a power law tail at a time of $1.89\times10^5 ω_{\rm pe}^{-1}$, where $ω_{\rm pe}$ is the electron plasma frequency. Moreover, the charged particles reflected at the shock excite magnetic waves upstream of the shock. The shock drift acceleration is more prominent with a larger obliquity angle for the shocks, but the accelerated particles diffuse parallel to the shock propagation direction more easily to participate in the diffusive shock acceleration. At the time still in the early acceleration stage, more energetic protons and electrons appear in the downstream of the shock for $θ= 15^\circ$ compared with the other two obliquities; moreover, in the upstream region, the spectrum of the accelerated electrons is the hardest for $θ_{\rm nB} = 45^\circ$ among the three obliquities, whereas the proton spectra for $θ_{\rm nB} = 15^\circ$ and $45^\circ$ are similar as a result of the competition of the effectiveness of the shock drift acceleration and the diffusive shock acceleration.

Theoretical $Σ$-$D$ Relations for Shell-Type Galactic Supernova Remnants

Relations between radio surface brightness ($Σ$) and diameter ($D$) of supernova remnants (SNRs) are important in astronomy. In this paper, following the work Duric \& Seaquist (1986) at adiabatic phase, we carefully investigate shell-type supernova remnants at radiative phase, and obtain theoretical $Σ$-$D$ relation at radiative phase of shell-type supernova remnants at 1 GHz. By using these theoretical $Σ$-$D$ relations at adiabatic phase and radiative phase, we also roughly determine phases of some supernova remnant from observation data.
