Chiral Balls: Knotted Structures with Both Chirality and Three-dimensional Rotational Symmetry

Knots have been put forward to explain various physical phenomena because of their topological stability. Nevertheless, few works have reported on the exotic symmetry properties that certain knots possess. Here we reveal an exceptional form of symmetry for a family of knots that are both chiral and three-dimensional (3-D) rotationally symmetric about every axis of a standard Cartesian coordinate system. We call these unique knotted structures chiral balls. To demonstrate the unprecedented physical characteristics exhibited by these unique structures, we study the electromagnetic scattering properties of a representative conductive chiral ball. In particular, a characteristic mode analysis is performed to investigate the intrinsic scattering properties of this chiral ball. With both chirality and 3-D rotational symmetry, the chiral ball is shown to exhibit an extraordinary isotropic circularly polarized scattering property, which has not been previously reported for any known electromagnetic structures. Because of their unique properties, chiral balls are expected to not only have a profound impact on the fields of electromagnetics and optics but also far beyond.

A Knotted Meta-molecule with 2-D Isotropic Optical Activity Rotating the Incident Polarization by 90°

Optical activity is the ability of chiral materials to rotate linearly-polarized (LP) electromagnetic waves. Because of their intrinsic asymmetry, traditional chiral molecules usually lack isotropic performance, or at best only possess a weak form of chirality. Here we introduce a knotted chiral meta-molecule that exhibits optical activity corresponding to a 90° polarization rotation of the incident waves. More importantly, arising from the continuous multi-fold rotational symmetry of the chiral torus knot structure, the observed polarization rotation behavior is found to be independent of how the incident wave is polarized. In other words, the proposed chiral knot structure possesses two-dimensional (2-D) isotropic optical activity as illustrated in Fig. 1, which has been experimentally validated in the microwave spectrum. The proposed chiral torus knot represents the most optically active meta-molecule reported to date that is intrinsically isotropic to the incident polarization.

Modified affine Hecke algebras and quiver Hecke algebras of type $A$

We introduce some modified forms for the degenerate and non-degenerate affine Hecke algebras of type $A$. These are certain subalgebras living inside the inverse limit of cyclotomic Hecke algebras. We construct faithful representations and standard bases for these algebras and give some explicit description of their centers. We show that there are algebra isomorphisms between some generalized Ore localizations of these modified affine Hecke algebras and of the quiver Hecke algebras of type $A$. As an application, we show that the center conjecture for the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebra of type $A$ holds if and only if the center conjecture for the cyclotomic Hecke algebra of type $A$ holds.

Schubert Class and cyclotomic nilHecke algebras

Let $\ell, n$ be positive integers such that $\ell\geq n$. Let $\mathbb{G}_{n,\ell}$ be the Grassmannian which consists of the set of $n$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^{\ell}$. There is a $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra isomorphism between the cohomology $H^*(\mathbb{G}_{n,\ell},\mathbb{Z})$ of $\mathbb{G}_{n,\ell}$ and a natural $\mathbb{Z}$-form $B$ of the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded basic algebra of the type $A$ cyclotomic nilHecke algebra $H_{\ell,n}^{(0)}=\langleψ_1,\cdots,ψ_{n-1},y_1,\cdots,y_n\rangle$. In this paper, we show that the isomorphism can be chosen such that the image of each (geometrically defined) Schubert class $(a_1,\cdots,a_{n})$ coincides with the basis element $b_{\mathbfλ}$ constructed by Jun Hu and Xinfeng Liang by purely algebraic method, where $0\leq a_1\leq a_2\leq\cdots\leq a_{n}\leq \ell-n$ with $a_i\in\mathbb{Z}$ for each $i$, $\mathbfλ$ is the $\ell$-multipartition of $n$ associated to $(\ell+1-(a_{n}+n), \ell+1-(a_{n-1}+n-1),\cdots,\ell+1-(a_1+1))$. A similar correspondence between the Schubert class basis of the cohomology of the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}_{\ell-n,\ell}$ and the $b_λ$'s basis of the natural $\mathbb{Z}$-form $B$ of the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded basic algebra of $H_{\ell,n}^{(0)}$ is also obtained. As an application, we obtain a second version of Giambelli formula for Schubert classes.

Alloying-induced topological transition in 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors

Research on two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) is obstructed due to the lack of feasible approaches to growing 2D TIs in experiments. Through systematic first-principles calculations and tight-binding simulations, we propose that alloying Os in 2D MoX2 (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers is an effective approach to inducing semiconductor-to-TI transitions, with sizable nontrivial gaps of 25-37 meV. Analysis of the electronic structures reveals that the topological property mainly originates from the 5d orbitals of the Os atom. Furthermore, the TI gaps can be modulated by external biaxial strain.

Integral $u$-deformed involution modules

Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system and $\ast$ an automorphism of $W$ with order $\leq 2$ and $S^{\ast}=S$. Lusztig and Vogan ([11], [14]) have introduced a $u$-deformed version $M_u$ of Kottwitz's involution module over the Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathscr{H}_{u}(W)$ with Hecke parameter $u^2$, where $u$ is an indeterminate. Lusztig has proved that $M_u$ is isomorphic to the left $\mathscr{H}_{u}(W)$-submodule of ${\hat{\mathscr{H}}}_u$ generated by $X_{\emptyset}:=\sum_{w^*=w\in W}{u^{-\ell(w)}T_w}$, where ${\hat{\mathscr{H}}}_u$ is the vector space consisting of all formal (possibly infinite) sums $\sum_{x\in W}{c_xT_x}$ ($c_x\in\mathbb{Q}(u)$ for each $x$). He speculated that one can extend this by replacing $u$ with any $λ\in \mathbb{C}\setminus\{0,1,-1\}$. In this paper, we give a positive answer to his speculation for any $λ\in K\setminus\{0,1,-1\}$ and any $W$, where $K$ is an arbitrary ground field.

Symmetric structure for the endomorphism algebra of projective-injective module in parabolic category

We show that for any singular dominant integral weight $λ$ of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the endomorphism algebra $B$ of any projective-injective module of the parabolic BGG category $\mathcal{O}_λ^{\mathfrak{p}}$ is a symmetric algebra (as conjectured by Khovanov) extending the results of Mazorchuk and Stroppel for the regular dominant integral weight. Moreover, the endomorphism algebra $B$ is equipped with a homogeneous (non-degenerate) symmetrizing form. In the appendix, there is a short proof due to K. Coulembier and V. Mazorchuk showing that the endomorphism algebra $B_λ^{\mathfrak{p}}$ of the basic projective-injective module of $\mathcal{O}_λ^{\mathfrak{p}}$ is a symmetric algebra.

Multiplexed storage and real-time manipulation based on a multiple-degree-of-freedom quantum memory

The faithful storage and coherent manipulation of quantum states with matter-systems enable the construction of large-scale quantum networks based on quantum repeater. To achieve useful communication rates, highly multimode quantum memories will be required to construct a multiplexed quantum repeater. Here, we present the first demonstration of the on-demand storage of orbital-angular-momentum states with weak coherent pulses at the single-photon-level in a rare-earth-ion doped crystal. Through the combination of this spatial degree-of-freedom with temporal and spectral degrees of freedom, we create a multiple-degree-of-freedom memory with high multimode capacity. This device can serve as a quantum mode converter with high fidelity, which is the fundamental requirements for the construction of a multiplexed quantum repeater. This device further enables essentially arbitrary spectral and temporal manipulations of spatial-qutrit-encoded photonic pulses in real-time. Therefore, the developed quantum memory can serve as a building block for scalable photonic quantum information processing architectures.

Slots-Memento : A System Facilitating Intergenerational Story Sharing and Preservation of Family Mementos

Family mementos document events shaping family life, telling a story within and between family members. The elderly collected some mementos for children, but never recorded stories related to those objects. In this paper, in order to understand the status quo of memento storytelling and sharing of elderly people, contextual inquiry was conducted, which further helped us to identify design opportunities and requirements. Resulting design was defined after brainstorm and user consultation, which was Slots- Memento, a system consisting a slot machine-like device used by the elderly and a flash drive used by the young. The Slots machine-like device utilizes with the metaphor of slots machine, which integrates functions of memento photo displaying, story recording, and preservation. In the flash disk, the young could copy memento photos to it. The system aims to facilitate memento story sharing and preservation within family members. Preliminary evaluation and user test were conducted in evaluation section, the results showed that Slots-Memento was understood and accepted by the elderly users. Photos of mementos were easy to recall memories. It enabled the elderly people to be aware of the stories of the family mementos, as well as aroused their desire to share them with family members. Related research methodology includes contextual inquiry, brainstorming, prototyping, scenario creation, and user test.

A readout method based on 10 Gigabit Ethernet for Sipixel detector

With the rapid development of network protocol, TCP/IP has been widely applied in various OS systems because of its advantages of high-speed network transmission and standardization. Furthermore, TCP/IP has the functions of retransmission and flow control, so it can ensure data's security and stability. In recent years, as a transmission Field-bus, it is also widely used in high-energy physics detectors. This article describes a readout method using 10 gigabit network processor applied in silicon pixel detector which is a pixel detector designed for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) in China. The PHY layer and the MAC layer of this hardware are both instantiated in FPGA. The logic of hardware can process and read out the data of the detectors. Meanwhile, it wraps up data and send them to TOE (TCP Offload Engine). A kind of bus control protocol interface is also provided, which can facilitate the host computer to read and write the specific register directly through the UDP protocol. Only a piece of FPGA can complete the processing of the TCP and UDP packets. It is important for the miniaturization of the detectors.

Realizing robust large-gap quantum spin Hall state in 2D HgTe monolayer on insulating substrate

Although many possible two-dimensional (2D) topological insulators (TIs) have been predicted in recent years, there is still lack of experimentally realizable 2D TI. Through first-principles and tight-binding simulations, we found an effective way to stabilize the robust quantum spin Hall state with a large nontrivial gap of 227 meV in 2D honeycomb HgTe monolayer by the Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) substrate. The band topology originates from the band inversion between the $s-$like and $p-$like orbitals that are contributed completely by the Hg and Te atoms, so the quantized edge states are restricted within the honeycomb HgTe monolayer. Meanwhile, the strong interaction between HgTe and Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) ensures high stability of the atomic structure. Therefore, the TI states may be realized in HgTe/Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) at high temperature.

Convolutional Sequence to Sequence Non-intrusive Load Monitoring

A convolutional sequence to sequence non-intrusive load monitoring model is proposed in this paper. Gated linear unit convolutional layers are used to extract information from the sequences of aggregate electricity consumption. Residual blocks are also introduced to refine the output of the neural network. The partially overlapped output sequences of the network are averaged to produce the final output of the model. We apply the proposed model to the REDD dataset and compare it with the convolutional sequence to point model in the literature. Results show that the proposed model is able to give satisfactory disaggregation performance for appliances with varied characteristics.

Short-term Load Forecasting with Deep Residual Networks

We present in this paper a model for forecasting short-term power loads based on deep residual networks. The proposed model is able to integrate domain knowledge and researchers' understanding of the task by virtue of different neural network building blocks. Specifically, a modified deep residual network is formulated to improve the forecast results. Further, a two-stage ensemble strategy is used to enhance the generalization capability of the proposed model. We also apply the proposed model to probabilistic load forecasting using Monte Carlo dropout. Three public datasets are used to prove the effectiveness of the proposed model. Multiple test cases and comparison with existing models show that the proposed model is able to provide accurate load forecasting results and has high generalization capability.

The Flash ADC system and PMT waveform reconstruction for the Daya Bay Experiment

To better understand the energy response of the Antineutrino Detector (AD), the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment installed a full Flash ADC readout system on one AD that allowed for simultaneous data taking with the current readout system. This paper presents the design, data acquisition, and simulation of the Flash ADC system, and focuses on the PMT waveform reconstruction algorithms. For liquid scintillator calorimetry, the most critical requirement to waveform reconstruction is linearity. Several common reconstruction methods were tested but the linearity performance was not satisfactory. A new method based on the deconvolution technique was developed with 1% residual non-linearity, which fulfills the requirement. The performance was validated with both data and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, and 1% consistency between them has been achieved.

Large Perpendicular Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy at Fe/Pb(001) interface

Search for ultrathin magnetic film with large perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (PMA) has been inspired for years by the continuous miniaturization of magnetic units in spintronics devices. The common magnetic materials used in research and applications are based on Fe because the pure Fe metal is the best yet simple magnetic material from nature. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we explored the possibility to produce large PMA with ultrathin Fe on non-noble and non-magnetic Pb(001) substrate. Interestingly, huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of 7.6 meV was found in Pb/Fe/Pb(001) sandwich structure with only half monolayer Fe. Analysis of electronic structures reveals that the magnetic proximity effect at the interface is responsible for this significant enhancement of MAE. The MAE further increases to 13.6 meV with triply repeated capping Pb and intermediate Fe layers. Furthermore, the MAE can be tuned conveniently by charge injection.

Invariant Wide Bandgaps in Honeycomb Monolayer and Single-Walled Nanotubes of IIB-VI Semiconductors

Search for low-dimensional materials with unique electronic properties is important for the development of electronic devices in nano scale. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we found that the band gaps of the two-dimensional honeycomb monolayers and one-dimensional single-walled nanotubes of IIB-VI semiconductors (ZnO, CdO, ZnS and CdS) are nearly chirality-independent and weakly diameter-dependent. Based on analysis of the electronic structures, it was found that the conduction band minimum is contributed by the spherically symmetric $s$ orbitals of cations and the valence band maximum is dominated by the in-plane $(d_{xy}-p_y)$ and $(d_{x^2-y^2}-p_x)$ hybridizations. These electronic states are robust against radius curvature, resulting in the invariant feature of the band gaps for the structures changing from honeycomb monolayer to single-walled nanotubes. The band gaps of these materials range from 2.3 eV to 4.7 eV, which is of potential applications in electronic devices and optoelectronic devices. Our studies show that searching for and designing specific electronic structures can facilitate the process of exploring novel nanomaterials for future applications.

Engineering giant magnetic anisotropy in single-molecule magnets by dimerizing heavy transition-metal atoms

Search for single-molecule magnets with large magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) is essential for the development of molecular spintronics devices used at room temperature. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we found that an Os-Os or Ir-Ir dimer embedded in the (5,5'-Br2-Salophen) molecule gives rise to large MAE of 41.6 or 51.4 meV which is large enough to hold the spin orientation at room temperature. Analysis of electronic structures reveals that the top Os and Ir atoms are most responsible for the spin moments and large MAEs of the molecules.

Two low-order nonconforming finite element methods for the Stokes flow in 3D

In this paper, we propose two low order nonconforming finite element methods (FEMs) for the three-dimensional Stokes flow that generalize the non-conforming FEM of Kouhia and Stenberg (1995, Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg.). The finite element spaces proposed in this paper consist of two globally continuous components (one piecewise affine and one enriched component) and one component that is continuous at the midpoints of interior faces. We prove that the discrete Korn inequality and a discrete inf-sup condition hold uniformly in the meshsize and also for a non-empty Neumann boundary. Based on these two results, we show the well-posedness of the discrete problem. Two counterexamples prove that there is no direct generalization of the Kouhia-Stenberg FEM to three space dimensions: The finite element space with one non-conforming and two conforming piecewise affine components does not satisfy a discrete inf-sup condition with piecewise constant pressure approximations, while finite element functions with two non-conforming and one conforming component do not satisfy a discrete Korn inequality.
