Quantum double of ${\rm U}_q((\ksl_2)^{\leq 0})$

Let ${U}_q(sl_2)$ be the quantized enveloping algebra associated to the simple Lie algebra $sl_2$. In this paper, we study the quantum double $D_q$ of the Borel subalgebra ${U}_q((sl_2)^{\leq 0})$ of ${U}_q(sl_2)$. We construct an analogue of Kostant--Lusztig ${Z}[v,v^{-1}]$-form for $D_q$ and show that it is a Hopf subalgebra. We prove that, over an algebraically closed field, every simple $D_q$-module is the pullback of a simple ${U}_q(sl_2)$-module through certain surjection from $D_q$ onto ${U}_q(sl_2)$, and the category of finite dimensional weight $D_q$-modules is equivalent to a direct sum of $|k^{\times}|$ copies of the category of finite dimensional weight ${U}_q(sl_2)$-modules. As an application, we recover (in a conceptual way) Chen's results as well as Radford's results on the quantum double of Taft algebra. Our main results allow a direct generalization to the quantum double of the Borel subalgebra of the quantized enveloping algebra associated to arbitrary Cartan matrix.

Crystal bases and simple modules for Hecke algebras of type G(p,p,n)

We apply the crystal basis theory for Fock spaces over quantum affine algebras to the modular representations of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type $G(p,p,n)$. This yields a classification of simple modules over these cyclotomic Hecke algebras in the non-separated case, generalizing our previous work [J. Hu, J. Algebra 267 (2003) 7-20]. The separated case was completed in [J. Hu, J. Algebra 274 (2004) 446--490]. Furthermore, we use Naito--Sagaki's work [S. Naito & D. Sagaki, J. Algebra 251 (2002) 461--474] on Lakshmibai--Seshadri paths fixed by diagram automorphisms to derive explicit formulas for the number of simple modules over these Hecke algebras. These formulas generalize earlier results of [M. Geck, Represent. Theory 4 (2000) 370-397] on the Hecke algebras of type $D_n$ (i.e., of type $G(2,2,n)$).

Specht filtrations and tensor spaces for the Brauer algebra

Let $m, n\in{\mathbb N}$. In this paper we study the right permutation action of the symmetric group ${\mathfrak S}_{2n}$ on the set of all the Brauer $n$-diagrams. A new basis for the free ${\mathbb Z}$-module ${\mathfrak B}_n$ spanned by these Brauer $n$-diagrams is constructed, which yields Specht filtrations for ${\mathfrak B}_n$. For any $2m$-dimensional vector space $V$ over a field of arbitrary characteristic, we give an explicit and characteristic free description of the annihilator of the $n$-tensor space $V^{\otimes n}$ in the Brauer algebra ${\mathfrak B}_n(-2m)$. In particular, we show that it is a ${\mathfrak S}_{2n}$-submodule of ${\mathfrak B}_n(-2m)$.

Mullineux involution and twisted affine Lie algebras

We use Naito-Sagaki's work [S. Naito & D. Sagaki, J. Algebra 245 (2001) 395--412, J. Algebra 251 (2002) 461--474] on Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths fixed by diagram automorphisms to study the partitions fixed by Mullineux involution. We characterize the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in terms of crystal graphs of basic representations of twisted affine Lie algebras of type $A_{2\ell}^{(2)}$ and of type $D_{\ell+1}^{(2)}$. We set up bijections between the set of symmetric partitions and the set of partitions into distinct parts. We propose a notion of double restricted strict partitions. Bijections between the set of restricted strict partitions (resp., the set of double restricted strict partitions) and the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in the odd case (resp., in the even case) are obtained.

Branching rules for Hecke Algebras of Type $D_{n}$

In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.

Brauer algebras, symplectic Schur algebras and Schur-Weyl duality

In this paper we prove Schur-Weyl duality between the symplectic group and Brauer algebra over an arbitrary infinite field $K$. We show that the natural homomorphism from the Brauer algebra $B_n(-2m)$ to the endomorphism algebra of tensor space $(K^{2m})^{\otimes n}$ as a module over the symplectic similitude group $GSp_{2m}(K)$ (or equivalently, as a module over the symplectic group $Sp_{2m}(K)$) is always surjective. Another surjectivity, that of the natural homomorphism from the group algebra for $GSp_{2m}(K)$ to the endomorphism algebra of $(K^{2m})^{\otimes n}$ as a module over $B_n(-2m)$, is derived as an easy consequence of S.~Oehms' results [S. Oehms, J. Algebra (1) 244 (2001), 19--44].

Resistivity saturation revisited: results from a dynamical mean field theory

We use the dynamical mean field method to study the high-temperature resistivity of electrons strongly coupled to phonons. The results reproduce the qualtiative behavior of the temperature and disorder dependence of the resistivity of the 'A-15' materials, which is commonly described in terms of saturation, but imply that the resistivity does not saturate. Rather, a change in temperature dependence occurs when the scattering becomes strong enough to cause a breakdown of the Migdal approximation.

Universal Phase Diagram for Vortex States of Layered Superconductors in Strong Magnetic Fields

We report on a Monte Carlo study of the lowest-Landau-level limit of the Lawrence-Doniach model for a layered superconductor. We have studied order parameter correlation functions for indications of the broken translational symmetry and the off-diagonal long range order present in the mean-field-theory vortex lattice. Our results are consistent with a single first order phase transition between a low temperature 3D vortex solid phase, with both broken translational symmetry and off-diagonal long range order, and a high temperature vortex liquid phase with no broken symmetries. We construct a universal phase diagram in terms of dimensionless parameters characterizing intra-layer and inter-layer couplings. The universal phase boundary extracted from our simulations and the associated latent heats and magnetization jumps are compared with experiment and with numerical results obtained for related models.

Spontaneous Coherence and Collective Modes in Double-Layer Quantum Dot Systems

We study the ground state and the collective excitations of parabolically-confined double-layer quantum dot systems in a strong magnetic field. We identify parameter regimes where electrons form maximum density droplet states, quantum-dot analogs of the incompressible states of the bulk integer quantum Hall effect. In these regimes the Hartree-Fock approximation and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximations can be used to describe the ground state and collective excitations respectively. We comment on the relationship between edge excitations of dots and edge magneto-plasmon excitations of bulk double-layer systems.

Period doubling, entropy, and renormalization

We show that in any family of stunted sawtooth maps, the set of maps whose set of periods is the set of all powers of 2 has no interior point, i.e., the combinatorial description of the boundary of chaos coincides with the topological description. We also show that, under mild assumptions, smooth multimodal maps whose set of periods is the set of all powers of 2 are infinitely renormalizable.

Topological conjugacy of circle diffeomorphisms

The classical criterion for a circle diffeomorphism to be topologically conjugate to an irrational rigid rotation was given by A. Denjoy. In 1985, one of us (Sullivan) gave a new criterion. There is an example satisfying Denjoy's bounded variation condition rather than Sullivan's Zygmund condition and vice versa. This paper will give the third criterion which is implied by either of the above criteria.

Commuting polynomials and polynomials with same Julia set

It has been known since Julia that polynomials commuting under composition have the same Julia set. More recently in the works of Baker and Eremenko, Fernández, and Beardon, results were given on the converse question: When do two polynomials have the same Julia set? We give a complete answer to this question and show the exact relation between the two problems of polynomials with the same Julia set and commuting pairs.

Participation-Ratio Entropy and Critical Fluctuations in the Thermodynamics of Pancake Vortices

We report on a study of the thermodynamics of the Ginzburg-Landau model for two-dimensional type-II superconductors near the transition from the normal state to the Abrikosov-lattice state. We couch our analysis in terms of the participation-ratio entropy, $s(P)$, which expresses the volume in order-parameter-space with a given participation-ratio for the local superfluid density. $s(P)$ completely determines the thermodynamics of the system. We report on results for $s(P)$ obtained analytically using perturbation expansion methods and numerically using Monte Carlo simulation methods and discuss the weak first-order phase transition which occurs in this system in terms of the properties of $s(P)$.

Correlations in Two-Dimensional Vortex Liquids

We report on a high temperature perturbation expansion study of the superfluid-density spatial correlation function of a Ginzburg-Landau-model superconducting film in a magnetic field. We have derived a closed form which expresses the contribution to the correlation function from each graph of the perturbation theory in terms of the number of Euler paths around appropriate subgraphs. We have enumerated all graphs appearing out to 10-th order in the expansion and have evaluated their contributions to the correlation function. Low temperature correlation functions, obtained using Padé approximants, are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results and show that the vortex-liquid becomes strongly correlated at temperatures well above the vortex solidification temperature.

Two-Dimensional Vortex Lattice Melting

We report on a Monte-Carlo study of two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau superconductors in a magnetic field which finds clear evidence for a first-order phase transition characterized by broken translational symmetry of the superfluid density. A key aspect of our study is the introduction of a quantity proportional to the Fourier transform of the superfluid density which can be sampled efficiently in Landau gauge Monte-Carlo simulations and which satisfies a useful sum rule. We estimate the latent heat per vortex of the melting transition to be $\sim 0.38 k_B T_M$ where $T_M$ is the melting temperature.
