Categorification of Donaldson-Thomas invariants via Perverse Sheaves

We show that there is a perverse sheaf on a fine moduli space of stable sheaves on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which is locally the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles for a local Chern-Simons functional, possibly after taking an etale Galois cover. This perverse sheaf lifts to a mixed Hodge module and gives us a cohomology theory which enables us to define the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants mathematically.

A survey on mixed spin P-fields

This is a survey on the mixed spin P-fields (MSP fields for short) theory which provides a platform to understand the phase transition between Gromov-Witten theory of quintic CY 3-folds and Landau-Ginzburg theory of the corresponding quintic polynomials. It discusses key ideas that lead to the definition of MSP fields and how moduli of stable maps to the quintic and that of 5-spin curves appear in the moduli of MSP fields. It also explains some properties of the moduli of MSP fields such as the cosection localisation, the properness of the degeneracy locus, and a torus action on the moduli.. Some vanishings arising from the torus action provide polynomial relations among GW-invarants and FJRW-invaraints which give an effective algorithm for the computation of those invariants. Some examples of computations of genus 1 low degree of GW invariants are provided.

Pricing and Resource Allocation via Game Theory for a Small-Cell Video Caching System

Evidence indicates that downloading on-demand videos accounts for a dramatic increase in data traffic over cellular networks. Caching popular videos in the storage of small-cell base stations (SBS), namely, small-cell caching, is an efficient technology for reducing the transmission latency whilst mitigating the redundant transmissions of popular videos over back-haul channels. In this paper, we consider a commercialized small-cell caching system consisting of a network service provider (NSP), several video retailers (VR), and mobile users (MU). The NSP leases its SBSs to the VRs for the purpose of making profits, and the VRs, after storing popular videos in the rented SBSs, can provide faster local video transmissions to the MUs, thereby gaining more profits. We conceive this system within the framework of Stackelberg game by treating the SBSs as a specific type of resources. We first model the MUs and SBSs as two independent Poisson point processes, and develop, via stochastic geometry theory, the probability of the specific event that an MU obtains the video of its choice directly from the memory of an SBS. Then, based on the probability derived, we formulate a Stackelberg game to jointly maximize the average profit of both the NSP and the VRs. Also, we investigate the Stackelberg equilibrium by solving a non-convex optimization problem. With the aid of this game theoretic framework, we shed light on the relationship between four important factors: the optimal pricing of leasing an SBS, the SBSs allocation among the VRs, the storage size of the SBSs, and the popularity distribution of the VRs. Monte-Carlo simulations show that our stochastic geometry-based analytical results closely match the empirical ones. Numerical results are also provided for quantifying the proposed game-theoretic framework by showing its efficiency on pricing and resource allocation.

Formation of hexagonal Boron Nitride on Graphene-covered Copper Surfaces

Graphene-covered copper surfaces have been exposed to borazine, (BH)3(NH)3, with the resulting surfaces characterized by low-energy electron microscopy. Although the intent of the experiment was to form hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on top of the graphene, such layers were not obtained. Rather, in isolated surface areas, h-BN is found to form micrometer-size islands that substitute for the graphene. Additionally, over nearly the entire surface, the properties of the layer that was originally graphene is observed to change in a manner that is consistent with the formation of a mixed h-BN/graphene alloy, i.e. h-BNC alloy. Furthermore, following the deposition of the borazine, a small fraction of the surface is found to consist of bare copper, indicating etching of the overlying graphene. The inability to form h-BN layers on top of graphene is discussed in terms of the catalytic behavior of the underlying copper surface and the decomposition of the borazine on top of the graphene.

Experimental observation of topological transitions in interacting multi-spin systems

Topologically ordered phase has emerged as one of most exciting concepts that not only broadens our understanding of phases of matter, but also has been found to have potential application in fault-tolerant quantum computation. The direct measurement of topological properties, however, is still a challenge especially in interacting quantum system. Here we realize one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chains using nuclear magnetic resonance simulators and observe the interaction-induced topological transitions, where Berry curvature in the parameter space of Hamiltonian is probed by means of dynamical response and then the first Chern number is extracted by integrating the curvature over the closed surface. The utilized experimental method provides a powerful means to explore topological phenomena in quantum systems with many-body interactions.

Appendix: Chapman-Enskog Expansion in the Lattice Boltzmann Method

The Chapman-Enskog expansion was used in the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to derive a Navier-Stokes-like equation and a formula was obtained to correlate the LBM model parameters to the kinematic viscosity implicitly implemented in LBM simulations. The obtained correlation formula usually works as long as the model parameters are carefully selected to make the Mach number and Knudsen number small although the validity of Chapman-Enskog expansion that has a formal definition of time derivative without tangible mathematical sense is not recognized by many mathematicians.

Bridging centrality and extremity: Refining empirical data depth using extreme value statistics

Statistical depth measures the centrality of a point with respect to a given distribution or data cloud. It provides a natural center-outward ordering of multivariate data points and yields a systematic nonparametric multivariate analysis scheme. In particular, the half-space depth is shown to have many desirable properties and broad applicability. However, the empirical half-space depth is zero outside the convex hull of the data. This property has rendered the empirical half-space depth useless outside the data cloud, and limited its utility in applications where the extreme outlying probability mass is the focal point, such as in classification problems and control charts with very small false alarm rates. To address this issue, we apply extreme value statistics to refine the empirical half-space depth in "the tail." This provides an important linkage between data depth, which is useful for inference on centrality, and extreme value statistics, which is useful for inference on extremity. The refined empirical half-space depth can thus extend all its utilities beyond the data cloud, and hence broaden greatly its applicability. The refined estimator is shown to have substantially improved upon the empirical estimator in theory and simulations. The benefit of this improvement is also demonstrated through the applications in classification and statistical process control.

Klinkenberg Slippage Effect in the Permeability Computations of Shale Gas by the Pore-scale Simulations

The prediction of permeability (i.e., apparent permeability) for the shale gas is challenging due to the Klinkenberg slippage effect that depends on the pore size and gas pressure. A recent Monte Carlo molecular simulation method (i.e., DSBGK method) is employed to accurately compute the permeability by the pore-scale simulations at different pressures. The computed results of a benchmark problem proposed here are used to verify the accuracy of the simple Klinkenberg correlation model, which relates the permeability to the intrinsic permeability (i.e., liquid permeability) and pressure. The verification shows that the Klinkenberg correlation model as a fitting formula is appropriate for the industry applications since the relative error is small in the whole range of the flow regime as long as it has been calibrated for each particular rock sample at the two ends with low and high pressures, respectively, by determining the model parameters using accurate permeability data that can be obtained by the scheme presented herein.

Progress in nonmagnetic impurity doping studies on Fe-based superconductors

We review the progress of nonmagnetic impurity doping study on the Fe-based superconductors. On the theoretical side, two highly potential candidates for the pairing symmetry order parameter, i.e. the multi-gap s++ and s+- wave models, have been proposed but continuously debated. The debate arises because of the complex gap structure, exceptive magnetic and metallic behaviors of Fe-based superconductors which may make the influences of nonmagnetic defects varied in chemical potential, impurity disorder, inter- and intra-band scattering strength, and electron localization, and hence difficulty in directly obtaining the most important information for understanding the symmetry order parameter. Experimentally, the nonmagnetic impurity substitution study has been widely carried out, which has provided very useful insights. We review herein the various nonmagnetic impurity doping experiments, including the controlled defects within the superconducting Fe2X2 planes through samples quality improvement, a single impurity effects on the electronic state and local moment, the magnetic response of the Fe2X2 planes both on macroscopic scale as antiferromagnetic state and local scale of moment, as well as the significant effect in modifying the transport properties. The experiments enable us to qualitatively analyze the nonmagnetic impurities effects on the superconducting state for many Fe-based superconductors. We also propose herein some strategies for the nonmagnetic impurity doping study. As an important model for explaining the nonmagnetic impurities doping effects, the pair-breaking model is compared with various theoretical approaches via analyzing the pair-breaking rates of various Fe-superconductors.

Long-lived Neel states in antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with strong uniaxial anisotropy for atomic-scale antiferromagnetic spintronics

It has been experimentally established that magnetic adatoms on surfaces can be arranged to form antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with strong uniaxial anisotropy and Neel states in such spin systems can be used to realize information storage. Here, we investigate eigen states, quantum spin dynamics, and life times of Neel states in short antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains with strong uniaxial anisotropy on the basis of numerical exact diagonalization method. We show rigorously that as long as the uniaxial anisotropy is very strong, the ground state and the first excitation state, being nearly degenerate, are safely separated from the other states and thus dominate the quantum dynamics of the Neel states. Through further numerical analysis, we achieve a powerful life-time expression of the Neel states for arbitrary spin and model parameters. It is interesting that for the famous Fe adatom chains on Cu$_2$N surface, 14 or 16 Fe adatoms are enough to obtain a practical long life-time for Neel state storage of information. These should be applicable to other similar antiferromagnetic spin systems for atomic-scale antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Differential Spatial Modulation with Gray Coded Antenna Activation Order

Differential spatial modulation (DSM) was recently proposed to overcome the challenge of channel estimation in spatial modulation (SM). In this letter, we propose a gray code order of antenna index permutations for DSM. To facilitate the implementation, the well-known Trotter-Johnson ranking and unranking algorithms are adopted, which results in similar computational complexity to the existing DSM that uses the lexicographic order. The coding gain achieved by the proposed gray code order over the existing lexicographic order is also analyzed and verified via simulations, which reveals a maximum of about 1.2dB for the case of four transmit antennas. Based on the gray coding framework, we further propose a diversity-enhancing scheme named intersected gray (I-gray) code order for DSM, where the permutations of active antenna indices are selected directly from the odd (even) positions of the full permutations in the gray code order. From analysis and simulations, it is shown that the I-gray code order can harvests an additional diversity order at the expense of only one information bit loss for each transmission with respect to the gray code order.

Model Reduction of Kinetic Equations by Operator Projection

By a further study of the mechanism of the hyperbolic regularization of the moment system for Boltzmann equation proposed in [Z. Cai, Y. Fan, R. Li, Comm. Math. Sci. 11(2): 547-571, 2013], we point out that the key point is treating the time and space derivative in the same way. Based on this understanding, a uniform framework to derive globally hyperbolic moment systems from kinetic equations using an operator projection method is proposed. The framework is so concise and clear that it can be treated as an algorithm with four inputs to derive hyperbolic moment system by routine calculations. Almost all existing globally hyperbolic moment system can be included in the framework, as well as some new moment system including globally hyperbolic regularized versions of Grad ordered moment system and a multidimensional extension of the quadrature-based moment system.

Approximation of Reachable Set for Coherently Controlled Open Quantum Systems: Application to Quantum State Engineering

Precisely characterizing and controlling realistic open quantum systems is one of the most challenging and exciting frontiers in quantum sciences and technologies. In this Letter, we present methods of approximately computing reachable sets for coherently controlled dissipative systems, which is very useful for assessing control performances. We apply this to a two-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance spin system and implement some tasks of quantum control in open systems at a near optimal performance in view of purity: e.g., increasing polarization and preparing pseudo-pure states. Our work shows interesting and promising applications of environment-assisted quantum dynamics.

Physical Dust Models for the Extinction toward Supernova 2014J in M82

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are powerful cosmological "standardizable candles" and the most precise distance indicators. However, a limiting factor in their use for precision cosmology rests on our ability to correct for the dust extinction toward them. SN 2014J in the starburst galaxy M82, the closest detected SN~Ia in three decades, provides unparalleled opportunities to study the dust extinction toward an SN Ia. In order to derive the extinction as a function of wavelength, we model the color excesses toward SN 2014J, which are observationally derived over a wide wavelength range in terms of dust models consisting of a mixture of silicate and graphite. The resulting extinction laws steeply rise toward the far ultraviolet, even steeper than that of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We infer a visual extinction of $A_V \approx 1.9~\rm mag$, a reddening of $E(B-V)\approx1.1~ \rm mag$, and a total-to-selective extinction ratio of $R_V \approx 1.7$, consistent with that previously derived from photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric observations. The size distributions of the dust in the interstellar medium toward SN 2014J are skewed toward substantially smaller grains than that of the Milky Way and the SMC.

Robust Collaborative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization For Hyperspectral Unmixing (R-CoNMF)

The recently introduced collaborative nonnegative matrix factorization (CoNMF) algorithm was conceived to simultaneously estimate the number of endmembers, the mixing matrix, and the fractional abundances from hyperspectral linear mixtures. This paper introduces R-CoNMF, which is a robust version of CoNMF. The robustness has been added by a) including a volume regularizer which penalizes the distance to a mixing matrix inferred by a pure pixel algorithm; and by b) introducing a new proximal alternating optimization (PAO) algorithm for which convergence to a critical point is guaranteed. Our experimental results indicate that R-CoNMF provides effective estimates both when the number of endmembers are unknown and when they are known.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of Mixed-Spin-P fields, construct their moduli spaces, and construct the virtual cycles of these moduli spaces.
