4.8 GHz Intra-Day Variability of FSRQ 0507+179

As one of targets of many flux monitoring campaigns, the FSRQ 0507+179 shows various flux variation properties at almost all observing wavelengths, from radio to $γ$-ray. With Urumqi 25-m telescope, our study on this object is focusing on its radio flux variability, especially the Intra-Day Variability (IDV). We carried out a total of six epochs of IDV observations on 0507+179 at 4.8 GHz since Mar. 2010, found clearly IDV behaviors in all observing sessions and consider it is likely a type I IDV source by analyzing the characteristics and the timescales of the light curves. Additionally, we found 0507+179 exhibited some different IDV behaviors after an optical flare.

Safe Screening With Variational Inequalities and Its Application to LASSO

Sparse learning techniques have been routinely used for feature selection as the resulting model usually has a small number of non-zero entries. Safe screening, which eliminates the features that are guaranteed to have zero coefficients for a certain value of the regularization parameter, is a technique for improving the computational efficiency. Safe screening is gaining increasing attention since 1) solving sparse learning formulations usually has a high computational cost especially when the number of features is large and 2) one needs to try several regularization parameters to select a suitable model. In this paper, we propose an approach called "Sasvi" (Safe screening with variational inequalities). Sasvi makes use of the variational inequality that provides the sufficient and necessary optimality condition for the dual problem. Several existing approaches for Lasso screening can be casted as relaxed versions of the proposed Sasvi, thus Sasvi provides a stronger safe screening rule. We further study the monotone properties of Sasvi for Lasso, based on which a sure removal regularization parameter can be identified for each feature. Experimental results on both synthetic and real data sets are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed Sasvi for Lasso screening.

New explicit thresholding/shrinkage formulas for one class of regularization problems with overlapping group sparsity and their applications

The least-square regression problems or inverse problems have been widely studied in many fields such as compressive sensing, signal processing, and image processing. To solve this kind of ill-posed problems, a regularization term (i.e., regularizer) should be introduced, under the assumption that the solutions have some specific properties, such as sparsity and group sparsity. Widely used regularizers include the $\ell_1$ norm, total variation (TV) semi-norm, and so on. Recently, a new regularization term with overlapping group sparsity has been considered. Majorization minimization iteration method or variable duplication methods are often applied to solve them. However, there have been no direct methods for solve the relevant problems because of the difficulty of overlapping. In this paper, we proposed new explicit shrinkage formulas for one class of these relevant problems, whose regularization terms have translation invariant overlapping groups. Moreover, we apply our results in TV deblurring and denoising with overlapping group sparsity. We use alternating direction method of multipliers to iterate solve it. Numerical results also verify the validity and effectiveness of our new explicit shrinkage formulas.

Total variation with overlapping group sparsity for image deblurring under impulse noise

The total variation (TV) regularization method is an effective method for image deblurring in preserving edges. However, the TV based solutions usually have some staircase effects. In this paper, in order to alleviate the staircase effect, we propose a new model for restoring blurred images with impulse noise. The model consists of an $\ell_1$-fidelity term and a TV with overlapping group sparsity (OGS) regularization term. Moreover, we impose a box constraint to the proposed model for getting more accurate solutions. An efficient and effective algorithm is proposed to solve the model under the framework of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We use an inner loop which is nested inside the majorization minimization (MM) iteration for the subproblem of the proposed method. Compared with other methods, numerical results illustrate that the proposed method, can significantly improve the restoration quality, both in avoiding staircase effects and in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and relative error (ReE).

Safe and Efficient Screening For Sparse Support Vector Machine

Screening is an effective technique for speeding up the training process of a sparse learning model by removing the features that are guaranteed to be inactive the process. In this paper, we present a efficient screening technique for sparse support vector machine based on variational inequality. The technique is both efficient and safe.

Image Restoration using Total Variation with Overlapping Group Sparsity

Image restoration is one of the most fundamental issues in imaging science. Total variation (TV) regularization is widely used in image restoration problems for its capability to preserve edges. In the literature, however, it is also well known for producing staircase-like artifacts. Usually, the high-order total variation (HTV) regularizer is an good option except its over-smoothing property. In this work, we study a minimization problem where the objective includes an usual $l_2$ data-fidelity term and an overlapping group sparsity total variation regularizer which can avoid staircase effect and allow edges preserving in the restored image. We also proposed a fast algorithm for solving the corresponding minimization problem and compare our method with the state-of-the-art TV based methods and HTV based method. The numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of PSNR, relative error and computing time.

A novel weighting scheme for random $k$-SAT

Consider a random $k$-CNF formula $F_{k}(n, rn)$ with $n$ variables and $rn$ clauses. For every truth assignment $σ\in \{0, 1\}^{n}$ and every clause $c=\ell_{1}\vee\cdots\vee\ell_{k}$, let $d=d(σ, c)$ be the number of satisfied literal occurrences in $c$ under $σ$. For fixed $β>-1$ and $λ>0$, we take $ω(σ, c)=0$, if $d=0$; $ω(σ, c)=λ(1+β)$, if $d=1$ and $ω(σ, c)=λ^{d}$, if $d>1$. Applying the above weighting scheme, we get that if $F_{k}(n, rn)$ is unsatisfiable with probability tending to one as $n\rightarrow\infty$, then $r\geq2.83, 8.09, 18.91, 40.81, 84.87$ for $k=3, 4, 5, 6$ and $7,$ respectively.

The 4-error linear complexity distribution for $2^n$-periodic binary sequences

By using the sieve method of combinatorics, we study $k$-error linear complexity distribution of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences based on Games-Chan algorithm. For $k=4,5$, the complete counting functions on the $k$-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic balanced binary sequences (with linear complexity less than $2^n$) are presented. As a consequence of the result, the complete counting functions on the 4-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences (with linear complexity $2^n$ or less than $2^n$) are obvious. Generally, the complete counting functions on the $k$-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences can be obtained with a similar approach.

A Safe Screening Rule for Sparse Logistic Regression

The l1-regularized logistic regression (or sparse logistic regression) is a widely used method for simultaneous classification and feature selection. Although many recent efforts have been devoted to its efficient implementation, its application to high dimensional data still poses significant challenges. In this paper, we present a fast and effective sparse logistic regression screening rule (Slores) to identify the 0 components in the solution vector, which may lead to a substantial reduction in the number of features to be entered to the optimization. An appealing feature of Slores is that the data set needs to be scanned only once to run the screening and its computational cost is negligible compared to that of solving the sparse logistic regression problem. Moreover, Slores is independent of solvers for sparse logistic regression, thus Slores can be integrated with any existing solver to improve the efficiency. We have evaluated Slores using high-dimensional data sets from different applications. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that Slores outperforms the existing state-of-the-art screening rules and the efficiency of solving sparse logistic regression is improved by one magnitude in general.

Efficient Mixed-Norm Regularization: Algorithms and Safe Screening Methods

Sparse learning has recently received increasing attention in many areas including machine learning, statistics, and applied mathematics. The mixed-norm regularization based on the l1q norm with q>1 is attractive in many applications of regression and classification in that it facilitates group sparsity in the model. The resulting optimization problem is, however, challenging to solve due to the inherent structure of the mixed-norm regularization. Existing work deals with special cases with q=1, 2, infinity, and they cannot be easily extended to the general case. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm based on the accelerated gradient method for solving the general l1q-regularized problem. One key building block of the proposed algorithm is the l1q-regularized Euclidean projection (EP_1q). Our theoretical analysis reveals the key properties of EP_1q and illustrates why EP_1q for the general q is significantly more challenging to solve than the special cases. Based on our theoretical analysis, we develop an efficient algorithm for EP_1q by solving two zero finding problems. To further improve the efficiency of solving large dimensional mixed-norm regularized problems, we propose a screening method which is able to quickly identify the inactive groups, i.e., groups that have 0 components in the solution. This may lead to substantial reduction in the number of groups to be entered to the optimization. An appealing feature of our screening method is that the data set needs to be scanned only once to run the screening. Compared to that of solving the mixed-norm regularized problems, the computational cost of our screening test is negligible. The key of the proposed screening method is an accurate sensitivity analysis of the dual optimal solution when the regularization parameter varies. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

SARS-CoV originated from bats in 1998 and may still exist in humans

SARS-CoV is believed to originate from civets and was thought to have been eliminated as a threat after the 2003 outbreak. Here, we show that human SARS-CoV (huSARS-CoV) originated directly from bats, rather than civets, by a cross-species jump in 1991, and formed a human-adapted strain in 1998. Since then huSARS-CoV has evolved further into highly virulent strains with genotype T and a 29-nt deletion mutation, and weakly virulent strains with genotype C but without the 29-nt deletion. The former can cause pneumonia in humans and could be the major causative pathogen of the SARS outbreak, whereas the latter might not cause pneumonia in humans, but evolved the ability to co-utilize civet ACE2 as an entry receptor, leading to interspecies transmission between humans and civets. Three crucial time points - 1991, for the cross-species jump from bats to humans; 1998, for the formation of the human-adapted SARS-CoV; and 2003, when there was an outbreak of SARS in humans - were found to associate with anomalously low annual precipitation and high temperatures in Guangdong. Anti-SARS-CoV sero-positivity was detected in 20% of all the samples tested from Guangzhou children who were born after 2005, suggesting that weakly virulent huSARS-CoVs might still exist in humans. These existing but undetected SARS-CoVs have a large potential to evolve into highly virulent strains when favorable climate conditions occur, highlighting a potential risk for the reemergence of SARS.

Inductive Kernel Low-rank Decomposition with Priors: A Generalized Nystrom Method

Low-rank matrix decomposition has gained great popularity recently in scaling up kernel methods to large amounts of data. However, some limitations could prevent them from working effectively in certain domains. For example, many existing approaches are intrinsically unsupervised, which does not incorporate side information (e.g., class labels) to produce task specific decompositions; also, they typically work "transductively", i.e., the factorization does not generalize to new samples, so the complete factorization needs to be recomputed when new samples become available. To solve these problems, in this paper we propose an"inductive"-flavored method for low-rank kernel decomposition with priors. We achieve this by generalizing the Nyström method in a novel way. On the one hand, our approach employs a highly flexible, nonparametric structure that allows us to generalize the low-rank factors to arbitrarily new samples; on the other hand, it has linear time and space complexities, which can be orders of magnitudes faster than existing approaches and renders great efficiency in learning a low-rank kernel decomposition. Empirical results demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Multi-Task Feature Learning Via Efficient l2,1-Norm Minimization

The problem of joint feature selection across a group of related tasks has applications in many areas including biomedical informatics and computer vision. We consider the l2,1-norm regularized regression model for joint feature selection from multiple tasks, which can be derived in the probabilistic framework by assuming a suitable prior from the exponential family. One appealing feature of the l2,1-norm regularization is that it encourages multiple predictors to share similar sparsity patterns. However, the resulting optimization problem is challenging to solve due to the non-smoothness of the l2,1-norm regularization. In this paper, we propose to accelerate the computation by reformulating it as two equivalent smooth convex optimization problems which are then solved via the Nesterov's method-an optimal first-order black-box method for smooth convex optimization. A key building block in solving the reformulations is the Euclidean projection. We show that the Euclidean projection for the first reformulation can be analytically computed, while the Euclidean projection for the second one can be computed in linear time. Empirical evaluations on several data sets verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Characterization of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences with fixed 3-error or 4-error linear complexity

The linear complexity and the $k$-error linear complexity of a sequence have been used as important security measures for key stream sequence strength in linear feedback shift register design. By using the sieve method of combinatorics, the $k$-error linear complexity distribution of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences is investigated based on Games-Chan algorithm. First, for $k=2,3$, the complete counting functions on the $k$-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences with linear complexity less than $2^n$ are characterized. Second, for $k=3,4$, the complete counting functions on the $k$-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences with linear complexity $2^n$ are presented. Third, for $k=4,5$, the complete counting functions on the $k$-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences with linear complexity less than $2^n$ are derived. As a consequence of these results, the counting functions for the number of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences with the 3-error linear complexity are obtained, and the complete counting functions on the 4-error linear complexity of $2^n$-periodic binary sequences are obvious.

Radio observations of the first three-month Fermi-AGN at 4.8 GHz

Using the Urumqi 25m radio telescope, sources from the first three-month Fermi-LAT detected AGN catalog with declination >0 were observed in 2009 at 4.8 GHz. The radio flux density appears to correlate with the gamma-ray intensity. Intra-day variability (IDV) observations were performed in March, April and May in 2009 for selected 42 gamma-ray bright blazars, and 60% of them show evident flux variability at 4.8 GHz during the IDV observations, the IDV detection rate is higher than that in previous flat-spectrum AGN samples. The IDV appears more often in the VLBI-core dominant blazars, and the non-IDV blazars show relatively `steeper' spectral indices than the IDV blazars. Pronounced inter-month variability has been found in two BL Lac objects: J0112+2244 and J0238+1636.

Efficient L1/Lq Norm Regularization

Sparse learning has recently received increasing attention in many areas including machine learning, statistics, and applied mathematics. The mixed-norm regularization based on the L1/Lq norm with q > 1 is attractive in many applications of regression and classification in that it facilitates group sparsity in the model. Fast Overlapping Group Lasso

The group Lasso is an extension of the Lasso for feature selection on (predefined) non-overlapping groups of features. The non-overlapping group structure limits its applicability in practice. There have been several recent attempts to study a more general formulation, where groups of features are given, potentially with overlaps between the groups. The resulting optimization is, however, much more challenging to solve due to the group overlaps. In this paper, we consider the efficient optimization of the overlapping group Lasso penalized problem. We reveal several key properties of the proximal operator associated with the overlapping group Lasso, and compute the proximal operator by solving the smooth and convex dual problem, which allows the use of the gradient descent type of algorithms for the optimization. We have performed empirical evaluations using the breast cancer gene expression data set, which consists of 8,141 genes organized into (overlapping) gene sets. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
