Crystallization characteristics and chemical bonding properties of nickel carbide thin film nanocomposites

The crystal structure and chemical bonding of magnetron-sputtering deposited nickel carbide Ni$_{1-x}$C$_{x}$ (0.05$\leq$x$\leq$0.62) thin films have been investigated by high-resolution X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. By using X-ray as well as electron diffraction, we found carbon-containing hcp-Ni (hcp-NiC$_{y}$ phase), instead of the expected rhombohedral-Ni$_{3}$C. At low carbon content (4.9 at\%) the thin film consists of hcp-NiC$_{y}$ nanocrystallites mixed with a smaller amount of fcc-NiC$_{x}$. The average grain size is about 10-20 nm. With the increase of carbon content to 16.3 at\%, the film contains single-phase hcp-NiC$_{y}$ nanocrystallites with expanded lattice parameters. With further increase of carbon content to 38 at\%, and 62 at\%, the films transform to X-ray amorphous materials with hcp-NiC$_{y}$ and fcc-NiC$_{x }$ nanodomain structures in an amorphous carbon-rich matrix. Raman spectra of carbon indicate dominant $sp^{2}$ hybridization, consistent with photoelectron spectra that show a decreasing amount of C-Ni phase with increasing carbon content. The Ni $3d$ - C $2p$ hybridization in the hexagonal structure gives rise to the salient double-peak structure in Ni $2p$ soft X-ray absorption spectra at 16.3 at\% that changes with carbon content. We also show that the resistivity is not only governed by the amount of carbon, but increases by more than a factor of two when the samples transform from crystalline to amorphous.

Non-d$^0$ Electric Dipole in FeO$_5$ bipyramid: a New Resource for Quantum Paraelectrics, Ferroelectrics and Multiferroics

Electric polarization in conventional ferroelectric oxides usually involves nonmagnetic transition-metal ions with an empty d shell (the d$^0$ rule). Here we unravel a new mechanism for local electric dipoles based on magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ (3d$^5$) ion violating the d$^0$ rule. The competition between the long-range Coulomb interaction and short-range Pauli repulsion in a FeO$_5$ bipyramid with proper lattice parameters would favor an off-center displacement of Fe$^{3+}$ that induces a local electric dipole. The manipulation of this kind of non-d$^0$ electric dipoles opens up a new route for generating unconventional dielectrics, ferroelectrics, and multiferroics. As a prototype example, we show that the non-d$^0$ electric dipoles in ferrimagnetic hexaferrites (Ba,Sr)Fe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ lead to a new family of magnetic quantum paraelectrics.

Spin transport and accumulation in the persistent photoconductor Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As

Electrical spin transport and accumulation have been measured in highly Si doped Al0.3Ga0.7As utilizing a lateral spin transport device. Persistent photoconductivity allows for the tuning of the effective carrier density of the channel material in situ via photodoping. Hanle effect measurements are completed at various carrier densities and the measurements yield spin lifetimes on the order of nanoseconds, an order of magnitude smaller than in bulk GaAs. These measurements illustrate that this methodology can be used to obtain a detailed description of how spin lifetimes depend on carrier density in semiconductors across the metal-insulator transition.

Bias current dependence of the spin lifetime in insulating Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As

The spin lifetime and Hanle signal amplitude dependence on bias current has been investigated in insulating Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As:Si using a three-terminal Hanle effect geometry. The amplitudes of the Hanle signals are much larger for forward bias than for reverse bias, although the spin lifetimes found are statistically equivalent. The spin resistance-area product shows a strong increase with bias current for reverse bias and small forward bias until 150 $μ$A, beyond which a weak dependence is observed. The spin lifetimes diminish substantially with increasing bias current. The dependence of the spin accumulation and lifetime diminish only moderately with temperature from 5 K to 30 K.

Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of Amorphous Chromium Carbide Thin Films

The microstructure, electronic structure, and chemical bonding of chromium carbide thin films with different carbon contents have been investigated with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption-emission spectroscopies. Most of the films can be described as amorphous nanocomposites with non-crystalline CrCx in an amorphous carbon matrix. At high carbon contents, graphene-like structures are formed in the amorphous carbon matrix. At 47 at% carbon content, randomly oriented nanocrystallites are formed creating a complex microstructure of three components. The soft x-ray absorption-emission study shows additional peak structures exhibiting non-octahedral coordination and bonding.

An Arakelov Inequality in Characteristic p and Upper Bound of p-Rank Zero Locus

In this paper we show an Arakelov inequality for semi-stable families of algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 1$ over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer maps. We apply this inequality to obtain an upper bound of the number of algebraic curves of $p-$rank zero in a semi-stable family over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer map in terms of the genus of a general closed fiber, the genus of the base curve and the number of singular fibres. An extension of the above results to smooth families of Abelian varieties over $k$ with $W_2$-lifting assumption is also included.

Temperature Dependence of Protein Folding Deduced from Quantum Transition

A quantum theory on conformation-electron system is presented. Protein folding is regarded as the quantum transition between torsion states on polypeptide chain, and the folding rate is calculated by nonadiabatic operator method. The theory is used to study the temperature dependences of folding rate of 15 proteins and their non-Arrhenius behavior can all be deduced in a natural way. A general formula on the rate-temperature dependence has been deduced which is in good accordance with experimental data. These temperature dependences are further analyzed in terms of torsion potential parameters. Our results show it is necessary to move outside the realm of classical physics when the temperature dependence of protein folding is studied quantitatively.

Band-tail shape and transport near the metal-insulator transition in Si-doped Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As

In the present work, an infrared LED is used to photodope MBE-grown Si:Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As, a well known persistent photoconductor, to vary the effective electron concentration of samples in situ. Using this technique, we examine the transport properties of two samples containing different nominal doping concentrations of Si (1x10^19 cm^-3 for sample 1 (S1) and 9x10^17 cm^-3 for sample 2 (S2)) and vary the effective electron density between 10^14 and 10^18 cm^-3. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) for S1 is found to occur at a critical carrier concentration of 5.7x10^16 cm^-3 at 350 mK. The mobilities in both samples are found to be limited by ionized impurity scattering in the temperature range probed, and are adequately described by the Brooks-Herring screening theory for higher carrier densities. The shape of the band-tail of the density of states (DOS) in Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As is found electrically through transport measurements. It is determined to be exponential in character, with an exponent of -1.25 for S1 and -1.38 for S2.

Canonical Class Inequality for Fibred Spaces

We establish the canonical class inequality for families of higher dimensional projective manifolds. As an application, we get a new inequality between the Chern numbers of 3-folds with smooth families of minimal surfaces of general type over a curve, $c_1^3<18c_3$.

On the room temperature multiferroic BiFeO3: Magnetic, dielectric and thermal properties

Magnetic dc susceptibility between 1.5 and 800 K, ac susceptibility and magnetization, thermodynamic properties, temperature dependence of radio and audio-wave dielectric constants and conductivity, contact-free dielectric constants at mm-wavelengths, as well as ferroelectric polarization are reported for single crystalline BiFeO3. A well developed anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility signals the onset of antiferromagnetic order close to 635 K. Beside this anomaly no further indications of phase or glass transitions are indicated in the magnetic dc and ac susceptibilities down to the lowest temperatures. The heat capacity has been measured from 2 K up to room temperature and significant contributions from magnon excitations have been detected. From the low-temperature heat capacity an anisotropy gap of the magnon modes of the order of 6 meV has been determined. The dielectric constants measured in standard two-point configuration are dominated by Maxwell-Wagner like effects for temperatures T > 300 K and frequencies below 1 MHz. At lower temperatures the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and loss reveals no anomalies outside the experimental errors, indicating neither phase transitions nor strong spin phonon coupling. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant was measured contact free at microwave frequencies. At room temperature the dielectric constant has an intrinsic value of 53. The loss is substantial and strongly frequency dependent indicating the predominance of hopping conductivity. Finally, in small thin samples we were able to measure the ferroelectric polarization between 10 and 200 K. The saturation polarization is of the order of 40 microC/cm^2, comparable to reports in literature.

Information-theoretic View of Sequence Organization in a Genome

Sequence organizations are viewed from two points: one is from informational redundancy or informational correlation (IC) and another is from k-mer frequency statistics. Two problems are investigated. The first is how the ICs exceed the fluctuation bound and the order emerges from fluctuation in a genome when the sequence length attains some critical value. We demonstrated that the transition from fluctuation to order takes place at about sequence length 200-300 thousands bases for human and E coli genome. It means that the life emerges from a region between macroscopic and microscopic. The second is about the statistical law of the k-mer organization in a genome under the evolutionary pressure and functional selection. We deduced a sum rule Q(k,N) on the k-mer frequency deviations from the randomness in a N-long sequence of genome and deduced the relations of Q(k,N) with k and N. We found that Q(k,N) increases with length N at a constant rate for most genome sequences and demonstrated that when the functional selection of k-mers is accumulated to some critical value the ordering takes place. An important finding is the sum rule correlated with the evolutionary complexity of the genome.

Inequalities between the Chern numbers of a singular fiber in a family of algebraic curves

In a family of curves, the Chern numbers of a singular fiber are the local contributions to the Chern numbers of the total space. We will give some inequalities between the Chern numbers of a singular fiber as well as their lower and upper bounds. We introduce the dual fiber of a singular fiber, and prove a duality theorem. As an application, we will classify singular fibers with large or small Chern numbers.

Magnetic susceptibility, phonons and dielectric constant of single crystalline BiFeO3

The magnetic susceptibility between 1.5 and 800 K, the infrared reflectivity at room temperature and the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant at mm-wavelengths are reported for single crystalline BiFeO3. A well developed anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility signals the onset of antiferromagnetic order close to 640 K. Beside this anomaly, no further indications of phase or spin-glass transitions are found in the susceptibility down to the lowest temperatures. From infrared reflectivity we were able to identify all 9 phonon modes which are expected to be infrared active within the ab plane of the crystal. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant was measured contact free in the 100 GHz range yielding e' = 54 at room temperature. The loss is substantial and strongly frequency dependent indicating the predominance of hopping conductivity.

The principle of a virtual multi-channel lock-in amplifier and its application to magnetoelectric measurement system

This letter presents principles and applications of a virtual multi-channel lock-in amplifier that is a simple but effective method to recover small ac signal from noise with high presison. The fundamentals of this method are based on calculation of cross-correlation function. Via this method, we successfully built up a magnetoelectric measurement system which can perform precise and versatile measurements without any analog lock-in amplifier. Using the virtual multi-channel lock-in amplifier, the output of the magnetoelectric measurement system is extensively rich in magnetoelectric coupling behaviors, including coupling strength and phase lag, under various dc bias magnetic field and ac magnetic field.

Liquid-Gas Coexistence and Critical Behavior in Boxed Pseudo-Fermi Matter

A schematic model is presented that allows one to study the behavior of interacting pseudo-Fermi matter locked in a thermostatic box. As a function of the box volume and temperature, the matter is seen to show all of the familiar charactersitics of a Van der Waals gas, which include the coexistence of two phases under certain circumstances and the presence of a critical point.

The Role of Surface Entropy in Statistical Emission of Massive Fragments from Equilibrated Nuclear Systems

Statistical fragment emission from excited nuclear systems is studied within the framework of a schematic Fermi-gas model combined with Weisskopf's detailed balance approach. The formalism considers thermal expansion of finite nuclear systems and pays special attention to the role of the diffuse surface region in the decay of hot equilibrated systems. It is found that with increasing excitation energy, effects of surface entropy lead to a systematic and significant reduction of effective emission barriers for fragments and, eventually, to the vanishing of these barriers. The formalism provides a natural explanation for the occurrence of negative nuclear heat capacities reported in the literature. It also accounts for the observed linearity of pseudo-Arrhenius plots of the logarithm of the fragment emission probability {\it versus} the inverse square-root of the excitation energy, but does not predict true Arrhenius behavior of these emission probabilities.
