Form uniqueness for graphs with weakly spherically symmetric ends

We give characterizations for the failure of form uniqueness on weakly spherically symmetric graphs. The first characterization is in terms of the graph structure, the second involves the capacity of a Cauchy boundary. We also discuss the stability of form uniqueness and give characterizations for graphs which, following the removal of a set, consist of a disjoint union of weakly spherically symmetric graphs.

PDE methods for extracting normal vector fields and distance functions of shapes

Partial differential equations can be used for extracting geometric features of shapes. This article summarizes recent methods to extract the normal vector field from an elliptic equation proposed by Yamada and from the heat equation, and also a method to extract the (signed) distance function from an elliptic equation that generalizes Varadhan's in 1967.

Essential self-adjointness of the Laplacian on weighted graphs: harmonic functions, stability, characterizations and capacity

We give two characterizations for the essential self-adjointness of the weighted Laplacian on birth-death chains. The first involves the edge weights and vertex measure and is classically known; however, we give another proof using stability results, limit point-limit circle theory and the connection between essential self-adjointness and harmonic functions. The second characterization involves a new notion of capacity. Furthermore, we also analyze the essential self-adjointness of Schr\"odinger operators, use the characterizations for birth-death chains and stability results to characterize essential self-adjointness for star-like graphs, and give some connections to the $\ell^2$-Liouville property.

Construction of signed distance functions through an elliptic equation

Motivated by recent advances in structural optimization, we propose a novel method for constructing the distance function to the boundary of a given domain. Building on and extending the celebrated Varadhan asymptotic theory, our approach reformulates the governing equation into a more appropriate framework. A central contribution of this work is the derivation of convergence rates within this new setting, which are shown to be optimal in one dimension and offer significant improvements over existing results in higher dimensions.

Removable sets and $L^p$-uniqueness on manifolds and metric measure spaces

We study symmetric diffusion operators on metric measure spaces. Our main question is whether or not the restriction of the operator to a suitable core continues to be essentially self-adjoint or $L^p$-unique if a small closed set is removed from the space. The effect depends on how large the removed set is, and we provide characterizations of the critical size in terms of capacities and Hausdorff dimension. As a key tool we prove a truncation result for potentials of nonnegative functions. We apply our results to Laplace operators on Riemannian and sub-Riemannian manifolds and on metric measure spaces satisfying curvature dimension conditions. For non-collapsing Ricci limit spaces with two-sided Ricci curvature bounds we observe that the self-adjoint Laplacian is already fully determined by the classical Laplacian on the regular part.

Intrinsic ultracontractivity for domains in negatively curved manifolds

Let $M$ be a complete, non-compact, connected Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below by a negative constant. A sufficient condition is obtained for open and connected sets $D$ in $M$ for which the corresponding Dirichlet heat semigroup is intrinsically ultracontractive. That condition is formulated in terms of capacitary width. It is shown that both the reciprocal of the bottom of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian acting in $L^2(D)$, and the supremum of the torsion function for $D$ are comparable with the square of the capacitary width for $D$ if the latter is sufficiently small. The technical key ingredients are the volume doubling property, the Poincaré inequality and the Li-Yau Gaussian estimate for the Dirichlet heat kernel for finite scale.

Essential self-adjointness and the $L^2$-Liouville property

We discuss connections between the essential self-adjointness of a symmetric operator and the constancy of functions which are in the kernel of the adjoint of the operator. We then illustrate this relationship in the case of Laplacians on both manifolds and graphs. Furthermore, we discuss the Green's function and when it gives a non-constant harmonic function which is square integrable.

H-compactness of elliptic operators on weighted Riemannian Manifolds

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of second-order uniformly elliptic operators on weighted Riemannian manifolds. They naturally emerge when studying spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on families of manifolds with rapidly oscillating metrics. We appeal to the notion of H-convergence introduced by Murat and Tartar. In our main result we establish an H-compactness result that applies to elliptic operators with measurable, uniformly elliptic coefficients on weighted Riemannian manifolds. We further discuss the special case of ``locally periodic'' coefficients and study the asymptotic spectral behavior of compact submanifolds of $\mathbb R^n$ with rapidly oscillating geometry.

Probabilistic characterizations of essential self-adjointness and removability of singularities

We consider the Laplacian and its fractional powers of order less than one on the complement $\mathbb{R}^d\setminusΣ$ of a given compact set $Σ\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of zero Lebesgue measure. Depending on the size of $Σ$, the operator under consideration, equipped with the smooth compactly supported functions on $\mathbb{R}^d \setminus Σ$, may or may not be essentially self-ajoint. We survey well known descriptions for the critical size of $Σ$ in terms of capacities and Hausdorff measures. In addition, we collect some known results for certain two-parameter stochastic processes. What we finally want to point out is, that, although a priori essential self-adjointness is not a notion directly related to classical probability, it admits a characterization via Kakutani type theorems for such processes.

Global properties of Dirichlet forms in terms of Green's formula

We study global properties of Dirichlet forms such as uniqueness of the Dirichlet extension, stochastic completeness and recurrence. We characterize these properties by means of vanishing of a boundary term in Green's formula for functions from suitable function spaces and suitable operators arising from extensions of the underlying form. We first present results in the framework of general Dirichlet forms on $σ$-finite measure spaces. For regular Dirichlet forms our results can be strengthened as all operators from the previous considerations turn out to be restrictions of a single operator. Finally, the results are applied to graphs, weighted manifolds, and metric graphs, where the operators under investigation can be determined rather explicitly.

A note on self-adjoint extensions of the Laplacian on weighted graphs

We study the uniqueness of self-adjoint and Markovian extensions of the Laplacian on weighted graphs. We first show that, for locally finite graphs and a certain family of metrics, completeness of the graph implies uniqueness of these extensions. Moreover, in the case when the graph is not metrically complete and the Cauchy boundary has finite capacity, we characterize the uniqueness of the Markovian extensions.

On the conservativeness and the recurrence of symmetric jump-diffusions

Sufficient conditions for a symmetric jump-diffusion process to be conservative and recurrent are given in terms of the volume of the state space and the jump kernel of the process. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the optimality of these conditions; in particular, the situation is allowed to be that the state space is topologically disconnected but the particles can jump from a connected component to the other components.

Lp-Liouville Property for Non-Local Operators

The Lp-Liouville property of a non-local operator A is investigated via the associated Dirichlet form. We will show that any non-negative continuous Lp E-subharmonic functions are constant under a quite mild assumption on the kernel of E if p is not less than 2. On the contrary, if 1 < p < 2, we need an additional assumption: either, the kernel has compact support; or f is Holder continuous.

Discrete spectrum and Weyl's asymptotic formula for incomplete manifolds

Motivated by recent interest in the spectrum of the Laplacian of incomplete surfaces with isolated conical singularities, we consider more general incomplete m-dimensional manifolds with singularities on sets of codimension at least 2. With certain restrictions on the metric, we establish that the spectrum is discrete and satisfies Weyl's asymptotic formula.
