Retarded Green's Function from Rotating AdS Black Holes: Emergent CFT$_2$ and Viscosity

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we consider the retarded Green's function in the background of rotating near-extremal AdS$_4$ black holes. Following the canonical AdS/CFT dictionary into the asymptotic boundary we get a CFT$_3$ result. We also take a new route and zoom in on the near-horizon region, blow up this region and show that it yields a CFT$_2$ result. We argue that the decoupling of the near-horizon region is akin to the decoupling of the near-throat region of a D3-brane, which led to the original formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, thus implying that the Kerr/CFT correspondence follows as a decoupling of the standard AdS/CFT correspondence applied to rotating black holes. As a byproduct, we compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio for the strongly coupled boundary CFT$_3$, and find that it violates the $1 / (4 π)$ bound.

Exact Multi-Instanton Solutions to Selfdual Yang-Mills Equation on Curved Spaces

We find exact multi-instanton solutions to the selfdual Yang-Mills equation on a large class of curved spaces with $SO(3)$ isometry, generalizing the results previously found on $\mathbb{R}^4$. The solutions are featured with explicit multi-centered expressions and topological properties. As examples, we demonstrate the approach on several different curved spaces, including the Einstein static universe and $\mathbb{R} \times$ dS$_3^E$, and show that the exact multi-instanton solutions exist on these curved backgrounds.

Toward an Effective CFT$_2$ from $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills and Aspects of Hawking Radiation

Using $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory we recover important aspects of the near-extremal thermodynamics of AdS$_5$ black holes including both the outer and the inner horizons with their corresponding entropy and energy. This $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory approach to black hole thermodynamics leads to an effective CFT$_2$ interpretation similar to the work by Callan and Maldacena. We corroborate this effective CFT$_2$ by implementing a particular near-horizon limit that geometrizes the Virasoro algebras as asymptotic symmetries. Using the effective CFT$_2$ picture, we discuss aspects of the Hawking radiation rate for a region of the near-extremal AdS$_5$ black hole quantum evolution.

Universal Entropy and Hawking Radiation of Near-Extremal AdS$_4$ Black Holes

We compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of near-extremal asymptotically AdS$_4$ electrically charged rotating black holes using three different methods: (i) from the gravity solution, (ii) from the near-horizon Kerr/CFT correspondence and (iii) from the boundary conformal field theory. The results from these three different approaches match exactly, giving us a unique and universal expression for the entropy and the microstate counting of near-extremal AdS black holes via the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the second method, we extend the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the near-extremal case to compute the left and right central charges. We also use hidden conformal symmetry of the near-horizon geometry to compute the Frolov-Thorne temperatures. From the results of the near-extremal AdS$_4$ black hole entropy, we provide a microscopic foundation for Hawking radiation.

A Topological Way of Finding Solutions to Yang-Mills Equation

We propose a systematic way of finding solutions to classical Yang-Mills equation with nontrivial topology. This approach is based on one of Wightman axioms for quantum field theory, which is referred to as form invariance condition in this paper. For a given gauge group and a spacetime with certain isometries, thanks to this axiom that imposes strong constraints on the general Ansatz, a systematic way of solving Yang-Mills equation can be obtained in both flat and curved spacetimes. In order to demonstrate this method, we recover various known solutions as special cases as well as produce new solutions not previously reported in the literature.

Form Invariance, Topological Fluctuations and Mass Gap of Yang-Mills Theory

In order to have a new perspective on the long-standing problem of the mass gap in Yang-Mills theory, we study the quantum Yang-Mills theory in the presence of topologically nontrivial backgrounds in this paper. The topologically stable gauge fields are constrained by the form invariance condition and the topological properties. Obeying these constraints, the known classical solutions to the Yang-Mills equation in the 3- and 4-dimensional Euclidean spaces are recovered, and the other allowed configurations form the nontrivial topological fluctuations at quantum level. Together, they constitute the background configurations, upon which the quantum Yang-Mills theory can be constructed. We demonstrate that the theory mimics the Higgs mechanism in a certain limit and develops a mass gap at semi-classical level on a flat space with finite size or on a sphere.

Partition Functions of $\mathcal{N}=1$ Gauge Theories on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$ and Duality

We compute the partition functions of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theories on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$ using supersymmetric localization. The path integral reduces to a sum over vortices at the poles of $S^2$ and at the origin of $\mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$. The exact partition functions allow us to test Seiberg duality beyond the supersymmetric index. We propose the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ partition functions on the $Ω$-background, and show that the Nekrasov partition functions can be recovered from these building blocks.

Gravitational Cardy Limit and AdS Black Hole Entropy

We explore the gravitational implementation of the field theory Cardy-like limit recently used in the successful microstate countings of AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions. On the field theory side, the Cardy-like limit focuses on a particular scaling of conserved electric charges and angular momenta, and we first translate this scaling to the gravitational side by a limiting procedure on the black hole parameters. We note that the scaling naturally accompanies a near-horizon region for which these black hole solutions are greatly simplified. Applying the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the near-horizon region, we precisely reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4, 5, 6, 7}$ BPS black holes. Our results explicitly provide a microscopic and universal low energy description for AdS black holes across various dimensions.

AdS$_5$ Black Hole Entropy near the BPS Limit

We analyze AdS$_5$ black holes that are nearly supersymmetric. They depart from the BPS limit in two distinct ways: a temperature takes them above extremality and a potential violates a certain constraint. We study the thermodynamics of these deformations and their interplay in detail. We discuss recent microscopic computations of BPS black hole entropy in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and generalize methods to the nearBPS regime by relaxing constraints imposed by supersymmetry. The computations recover gravitational results from microscopics also for nearBPS black holes.

Note on Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation, KdV Equation and 2D Topological Yang-Mills-Higgs Theory

In this paper we discuss the relation between the (1+1)D nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the KdV equation. By applying the boson/vortex duality, we can map the classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation into the classical KdV equation in the small coupling limit, which corresponds to the UV regime of the theory. At quantum level, the two theories satisfy the Bethe Ansatz equations of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX chain and the XXZ chain in the continuum limit respectively. Combining these relations with the dualities discussed previously in the literature, we propose a duality web in the UV regime among the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the KdV equation and the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ topological Yang-Mills-Higgs theory.

Gravity Dual of Two-Dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)^*$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory and Integrable Models

The 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be obtained from the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ theory with a twisted mass deformation. In this paper we construct the gravity dual theory of the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory at the large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling limit using the 5D gauged supergravity. In the UV regime, this construction also provides the gravity dual of the 2D $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)^*$ $U(N)$ topological Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. We propose a triality in the UV regime among integrable model, gauge theory and gravity, and we make some checks of this relation at classical level.

Dark Solitons, D-branes and Noncommutative Tachyon Field Theory

In this paper we discuss the boson/vortex duality by mapping the (3+1)D Gross-Pitaevskii theory into an effective string theory in the presence of boundaries. Via the effective string theory, we find the Seiberg-Witten map between the commutative and the noncommutative tachyon field theories, and consequently identify their soliton solutions with $D$-branes in the effective string theory. We perform various checks of the duality map and the identification of soliton solutions. This new insight between the Gross-Pitaevskii theory and the effective string theory explains the similarity of these two systems at quantitative level.

Entanglement Entropy of ABJM Theory and Entropy of Topological Black Hole

In this paper we discuss the supersymmetric localization of the 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ off-shell gauged supergravity in the background of the $\textrm{AdS}_4$ neutral topological black hole, which is the gravity dual of the ABJM theory defined on the boundary $\textrm{S}^1 \times \mathbb{H}^2$. We compute the large-$N$ expansion of the supergravity partition function. The result gives the black hole entropy with the logarithmic correction, which matches the previous result of the entanglement entropy of the ABJM theory up to some stringy effects. Our result is consistent with the previous on-shell one-loop computation of the logarithmic correction to black hole entropy. It provides an explicit example of the identification of the entanglement entropy of the boundary conformal field theory with the bulk black hole entropy beyond the leading order given by the classical Bekenstein-Hawking formula, which consequently tests the AdS/CFT correspondence at the subleading order.

Vortex lines attached to dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates and Boson-Vortex Duality in 3+1 Dimensions

We demonstrate the existence of stationary states composed of vortex lines attached to planar dark solitons in scalar Bose-Einstein condensates. Dynamically stable states of this type are found at low values of the chemical potential in channeled condensates, where the long-wavelength instability of dark solitons is prevented. In oblate, harmonic traps, U-shaped vortex lines attached by both ends to a single planar soliton are shown to be long-lived states. Our results are reported for parameters typical of current experiments, and open up a way to explore the interplay of different topological structures. These configurations provide Dirichlet boundary conditions for vortex lines and thereby mimic open strings attached to D-branes in string theory. We show that these similarities can be formally established by mapping the Gross-Pitaevskii theory into a dual effective string theory for open strings via a boson-vortex duality in 3+1 dimensions. Combining a one-form gauge field living on the soliton plane which couples to the endpoints of vortex lines and a two-form gauge field which couples to vortex lines, we obtain a gauge-invariant dual action of open vortex lines with their endpoints attached to dark solitons.

Theory of the vortex-clustering transition in a confined two-dimensional quantum fluid

Clustering of like-sign vortices in a planar bounded domain is known to occur at negative temperature, a phenomenon that Onsager demonstrated to be a consequence of bounded phase space. In a confined superfluid, quantized vortices can support such an ordered phase, provided they evolve as an almost isolated subsystem containing sufficient energy. A detailed theoretical understanding of the statistical mechanics of such states thus requires a microcanonical approach. Here we develop an analytical theory of the vortex clustering transition in a neutral system of quantum vortices confined to a two-dimensional disk geometry, within the microcanonical ensemble. As the system energy increases above a critical value, the system develops global order via the emergence of a macroscopic dipole structure from the homogeneous phase of vortices, spontaneously breaking the Z2 symmetry associated with invariance under vortex circulation exchange, and the rotational SO(2) symmetry due to the disk geometry. The dipole structure emerges characterized by the continuous growth of the macroscopic dipole moment which serves as a global order parameter, resembling a continuous phase transition. The critical temperature of the transition, and the critical exponent associated with the dipole moment, are obtained exactly within mean-field theory. The clustering transition is shown to be distinct from the final state reached at high energy, known as supercondensation. The dipole moment develops via two macroscopic vortex clusters and the cluster locations are found analytically, both near the clustering transition and in the supercondensation limit. The microcanonical theory shows excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations, and signatures of the transition are apparent even for a modest system of 100 vortices, accessible in current Bose-Einstein condensate experiments.

Semichiral Fields on S^2 and Generalized Kähler Geometry

We study a class of two-dimensional N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories, given by semichiral multiplets coupled to the standard vector multiplet. In the UV, these theories are traditional gauge theories deformed by a gauged Wess-Zumino term. In the IR, they give rise to nonlinear sigma models on noncompact generalized Kähler manifolds, which contain a three-form flux H and whose metric is not Kähler. We place these theories on S^2 and compute their partition function exactly with localization techniques. We find that the contribution of instantons to the partition function that we define is insensitive to the deformation, and discuss our results from the point of view of the generalized Kähler target space.

Renyi Entropy of Free (2,0) Tensor Multiplet and its Supersymmetric Counterpart

We compute the Renyi entropy and the supersymmetric Renyi entropy for the six-dimensional free (2,0) tensor multiplet. We make various checks on our results, and they are consistent with the previous results about the (2,0) tensor multiplet. As a by-product, we have established a canonical way to compute the Renyi entropy for p-form fields in d-dimensions.

Dynamics of Two-Dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Supersymmetric Theories with Semichiral Superfields I

We analyze the dynamics of a general two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ gauged linear sigma model with semichiral superfields. By computing the elliptic genera, we study the vacuum structure of the model. The result coincides with the model without using semichiral superfields. We also show that the low energy effective twisted superpotential contributed by semichiral superfields vanishes, whether we turn on twisted masses or not.
