ImVerde: Vertex-Diminished Random Walk for Learning Network Representation from Imbalanced Data

Imbalanced data widely exists in many high-impact applications. An example is in air traffic control, where we aim to identify the leading indicators for each type of accident cause from historical records. Among all three types of accident causes, historical records with 'personnel issues' are much more than the other two types ('aircraft issues' and 'environmental issues') combined. Thus, the resulting dataset is highly imbalanced, and can be naturally modeled as a network. Up until now, most existing work on imbalanced data analysis focused on the classification setting, and very little is devoted to learning the node representation from imbalanced networks. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose Vertex-Diminished Random Walk (VDRW) for imbalanced network analysis. The key idea is to encourage the random particle to walk within the same class by adjusting the transition probabilities each step. It resembles the existing Vertex Reinforced Random Walk in terms of the dynamic nature of the transition probabilities, as well as some convergence properties. However, it is more suitable for analyzing imbalanced networks as it leads to more separable node representations in the embedding space. Then, based on VDRW, we propose a semi-supervised network representation learning framework named ImVerde for imbalanced networks, in which context sampling uses VDRW and the label information to create node-context pairs, and balanced-batch sampling adopts a simple under-sampling method to balance these pairs in different classes. Experimental results demonstrate that ImVerde based on VDRW outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms for learning network representation from imbalanced data.

Achieving Efficient and Secure Data Acquisition for Cloud-supported Internet of Things in Smart Grid

Cloud-supported Internet of Things (Cloud-IoT) has been broadly deployed in smart grid systems. The IoT front-ends are responsible for data acquisition and status supervision, while the substantial amount of data is stored and managed in the cloud server. Achieving data security and system efficiency in the data acquisition and transmission process are of great significance and challenging, because the power grid-related data is sensitive and in huge amount. In this paper, we present an efficient and secure data acquisition scheme based on CP-ABE (Ciphertext Policy Attribute Based Encryption). Data acquired from the terminals will be partitioned into blocks and encrypted with its corresponding access sub-tree in sequence, thereby the data encryption and data transmission can be processed in parallel. Furthermore, we protect the information about the access tree with threshold secret sharing method, which can preserve the data privacy and integrity from users with the unauthorized sets of attributes. The formal analysis demonstrates that the proposed scheme can fulfill the security requirements of the Cloud-supported IoT in smart grid. The numerical analysis and experimental results indicate that our scheme can effectively reduce the time cost compared with other popular approaches.

An Efficient Encryption Scheme with Verifiable Outsourced Decryption in Mobile Cloud Computing

With the increasing number of mobile applications and the popularity of cloud computing, the combination of these two techniques that named mobile cloud computing (MCC) attracts great attention in recent years. A promising public key encryption scheme, Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE), especially the Ciphertext Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE), has been used for realizing fine-grained access control on encrypted data stored in MCC. However, the computational overhead of encryption and decryption grow with the complexity of the access policy. Thus, maintaining data security as well as efficiency of data processing in MCC are important and challenging issues. In this paper, we propose an efficient encryption method based on CP-ABE, which can lower the overhead on data owners. To further reduce the decryption overhead on data receivers, we additionally propose a verifiable outsourced decryption scheme. By security analysis and performance evaluation, the proposed scheme is proved to be secure as well as efficient.

Distributed Laser Charging: A Wireless Power Transfer Approach

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising solution to provide convenient and perpetual energy supplies to electronics. Traditional WPT technologies face the challenge of providing Watt-level power over meter-level distance for Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices, such as sensors, controllers, smart-phones, laptops, etc.. Distributed laser charging (DLC), a new WPT alternative, has the potential to solve these problems and enable WPT with the similar experience as WiFi communications. In this paper, we present a multi-module DLC system model, in order to illustrate its physical fundamentals and mathematical formula. This analytical modeling enables the evaluation of power conversion or transmission for each individual module, considering the impacts of laser wavelength, transmission attenuation and photovoltaic-cell (PV-cell) temperature. Based on the linear approximation of electricity-to-laser and laser-to-electricity power conversion validated by measurement and simulation, we derive the maximum power transmission efficiency in closed-form. Thus, we demonstrate the variation of the maximum power transmission efficiency depending on the supply power at the transmitter, laser wavelength, transmission distance, and PV-cell temperature. Similar to the maximization of information transmission capacity in wireless information transfer (WIT), the maximization of the power transmission efficiency is equally important in WPT. Therefore, this work not only provides the insight of DLC in theory, but also offers the guideline of DLC system design in practice.

Optimal Resonant Beam Charging for Electronic Vehicles in Internet of Intelligent Vehicles

To enable electric vehicles (EVs) to access to the internet of intelligent vehicles (IoIV), charging EVs wirelessly anytime and anywhere becomes an urgent need. The resonant beam charging (RBC) technology can provide high-power and long-range wireless energy for EVs. However, the RBC system is unefficient. To improve the RBC power transmission efficiency, the adaptive resonant beam charging (ARBC) technology was introduced. In this paper, after analyzing the modular model of the ARBC system, we obtain the closed-form formula of the end-to-end power transmission efficiency. Then, we prove that the optimal power transmission efficiency uniquely exists. Moreover, we analyze the relationships among the optimal power transmission efficiency, the source power, the output power, and the beam transmission efficiency, which provide the guidelines for the optimal ARBC system design and implementation. Hence, perpetual energy can be supplied to EVs in IoIV virtually.

Fair Scheduling in Resonant Beam Charging for IoT Devices

Resonant Beam Charging (RBC) is the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technology, which can provide high-power, long-distance, mobile, and safe wireless charging for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Supporting multiple IoT devices charging simultaneously is a significant feature of the RBC system. To optimize the multi-user charging performance, the transmitting power should be scheduled for charging all IoT devices simultaneously. In order to keep all IoT devices working as long as possible for fairness, we propose the First Access First Charge (FAFC) scheduling algorithm. Then, we formulate the scheduling parameters quantitatively for algorithm implementation. Finally, we analyze the performance of FAFC scheduling algorithm considering the impacts of the receiver number, the transmitting power and the charging time. Based on the analysis, we summarize the methods of improving the WPT performance for multiple IoT devices, which include limiting the receiver number, increasing the transmitting power, prolonging the charging time and improving the single-user's charging efficiency. The FAFC scheduling algorithm design and analysis provide a fair WPT solution for the multi-user RBC system.

Adaptive Resonant Beam Charging for Intelligent Wireless Power Transfer

As a long-range high-power wireless power transfer (WPT) technology, resonant beam charging (RBC) can transmit Watt-level power over long distance for the devices in the internet of things (IoT). Due to its open-loop architecture, RBC faces the challenge of providing dynamic current and voltage to optimize battery charging performance. In RBC, battery overcharge may cause energy waste, thermal effects, and even safety issues. On the other hand, battery undercharge may lead to charging time extension and significant battery capacity reduction. In this paper, we present an adaptive resonant beam charging (ARBC) system for battery charging optimization. Based on RBC, ARBC uses a feedback system to control the supplied power dynamically according to the battery preferred charging values. Moreover, in order to transform the received current and voltage to match the battery preferred charging values, ARBC adopts a direct current to direct current (DC-DC) conversion circuit. Relying on the analytical models for RBC power transmission, we obtain the end-to-end power transfer relationship in the approximate linear closed-form of ARBC. Thus, the battery preferred charging power at the receiver can be mapped to the supplied power at the transmitter for feedback control. Numerical evaluation demonstrates that ARBC can save 61% battery charging energy and 53%-60% supplied energy compared with RBC. Furthermore, ARBC has high energy-saving gain over RBC when the WPT is unefficient. ARBC in WPT is similar to link adaption in wireless communications. Both of them play the important roles in their respective areas.

TDMA in Adaptive Resonant Beam Charging for IoT Devices

Resonant beam charging (RBC) can realize wireless power transfer (WPT) from a transmitter to multiple receivers via resonant beams. The adaptive RBC (ARBC) can effectively improve its energy utilization. In order to support multi-user WPT in the ARBC system, we propose the time-division multiple access (TDMA) method and design the TDMA-based WPT scheduling algorithm. Our TDMA WPT method has the features of concurrently charging, continuous charging current, individual user power control, constant driving power and flexible driving power control. The simulation shows that the TDMA scheduling algorithm has high efficiency, as the total charging time is roughly half (46.9% when charging 50 receivers) of that of the alternative scheduling algorithm. Furthermore, the TDMA for WPT inspires the ideas of enhancing the ARBC system, such as flow control and quality of service (QoS).

Optimization and projection of coated structures with orthotropic infill material

The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, we introduce an efficient homogenization-based approach to perform topology optimization of coated structures with orthotropic infill material. By making use of the relaxed design space, we can obtain designs with complex microstructures on a relatively coarse mesh. In the second part of this work, a method is presented to project the homogenization-based designs on a fine but realizable scale. A novel method to adaptively refine the lattice structure is presented to allow for a regular spacing of the infill. Numerical experiments show excellent behavior of the projected designs, which perform almost identical to the homogenization-based designs. Furthermore, a reduction in computational cost of at least an order of magnitude is achieved, compared to a related approach in which the infill is optimized using a density-based approach.

Continuous Optimization of Adaptive Quadtree Structures

We present a novel continuous optimization method to the discrete problem of quadtree optimization. The optimization aims at achieving a quadtree structure with the highest mechanical stiffness, where the edges in the quadtree are interpreted as structural elements carrying mechanical loads. We formulate quadtree optimization as a continuous material distribution problem. The discrete design variables (i.e., to refine or not to refine) are replaced by continuous variables on multiple levels in the quadtree hierarchy. In discrete quadtree optimization, a cell is only eligible for refinement if its parent cell has been refined. We propose a continuous analogue to this dependency for continuous multi-level design variables, and integrate it in the iterative optimization process. Our results show that the continuously optimized quadtree structures perform much stiffer than uniform patterns and the heuristically optimized counterparts. We demonstrate the use of adaptive structures as lightweight infill for 3D printed parts, where uniform geometric patterns have been typically used in practice.

Neural method for Explicit Mapping of Quasi-curvature Locally Linear Embedding in image retrieval

This paper proposed a new explicit nonlinear dimensionality reduction using neural networks for image retrieval tasks. We first proposed a Quasi-curvature Locally Linear Embedding (QLLE) for training set. QLLE guarantees the linear criterion in neighborhood of each sample. Then, a neural method (NM) is proposed for out-of-sample problem. Combining QLLE and NM, we provide a explicit nonlinear dimensionality reduction approach for efficient image retrieval. The experimental results in three benchmark datasets illustrate that our method can get better performance than other state-of-the-art out-of-sample methods.

Infill Optimization for Additive Manufacturing -- Approaching Bone-like Porous Structures

Porous structures such as trabecular bone are widely seen in nature. These structures exhibit superior mechanical properties whilst being lightweight. In this paper, we present a method to generate bone-like porous structures as lightweight infill for additive manufacturing. Our method builds upon and extends voxel-wise topology optimization. In particular, for the purpose of generating sparse yet stable structures distributed in the interior of a given shape, we propose upper bounds on the localized material volume in the proximity of each voxel in the design domain. We then aggregate the local per-voxel constraints by their p-norm into an equivalent global constraint, in order to facilitate an efficient optimization process. Implemented on a high-resolution topology optimization framework, our results demonstrate mechanically optimized, detailed porous structures which mimic those found in nature. We further show variants of the optimized structures subject to different design specifications, and analyze the optimality and robustness of the obtained structures.

Three Tiers Neighborhood Graph and Multi-graph Fusion Ranking for Multi-feature Image Retrieval: A Manifold Aspect

Single feature is inefficient to describe content of an image, which is a shortcoming in traditional image retrieval task. We know that one image can be described by different features. Multi-feature fusion ranking can be utilized to improve the ranking list of query. In this paper, we first analyze graph structure and multi-feature fusion re-ranking from manifold aspect. Then, Three Tiers Neighborhood Graph (TTNG) is constructed to re-rank the original ranking list by single feature and to enhance precision of single feature. Furthermore, we propose Multi-graph Fusion Ranking (MFR) for multi-feature ranking, which considers the correlation of all images in multiple neighborhood graphs. Evaluations are conducted on UK-bench, Corel-1K, Corel-10K and Cifar-10 benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that our TTNG and MFR outperform than other state-of-the-art methods. For example, we achieve competitive results N-S score 3.91 and precision 65.00% on UK-bench and Corel-10K datasets respectively.

Perceptual uniform descriptor and Ranking on manifold: A bridge between image representation and ranking for image retrieval

Incompatibility of image descriptor and ranking is always neglected in image retrieval. In this paper, manifold learning and Gestalt psychology theory are involved to solve the incompatibility problem. A new holistic descriptor called Perceptual Uniform Descriptor (PUD) based on Gestalt psychology is proposed, which combines color and gradient direction to imitate the human visual uniformity. PUD features in the same class images distributes on one manifold in most cases because PUD improves the visual uniformity of the traditional descriptors. Thus, we use manifold ranking and PUD to realize image retrieval. Experiments were carried out on five benchmark data sets, and the proposed method can greatly improve the accuracy of image retrieval. Our experimental results in the Ukbench and Corel-1K datasets demonstrated that N-S score reached to 3.58 (HSV 3.4) and mAP to 81.77% (ODBTC 77.9%) respectively by utilizing PUD which has only 280 dimension. The results are higher than other holistic image descriptors (even some local ones) and state-of-the-arts retrieval methods.

Load Coupling Power Optimization in Cloud Radio Access Networks

Recently, Cloud-based Radio Access Network (C-RAN) has been proposed as a potential solution to reduce energy cost in cellular networks. C-RAN centralizes the baseband processing capabilities of Base Stations (BSs) in a cloud computing platform in the form of BaseBand Unit (BBU) pool. In C-RAN, power consumed by the traditional BS system is distributed as wireless transmission power of the Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) and baseband processing power of the BBU pool. Different from previous work where wireless transmission power and baseband processing power are optimized individually and independently, this paper focuses on joint optimization of allocation for these two kinds of power and attempts to minimize the total power consumption subject to Quality of Service (QoS) requirements from users in terms of data rates. First, we exploit the load coupling model to express the coupling relations among power, load and user data rates. Based on the load coupling mode, we formulate the joint power optimization problem in C-RAN over both wireless transmission power and baseband processing power. Second, we prove that operating at full load may not be optimal in minimizing the total power consumption in C-RAN. Finally, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve the target problem. Simulations have been performed to validate our theoretical and algorithmic work. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing schemes (without joint power optimization) in terms of power consumption.

Distributed Interference-Aware Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communications Underlaying Cellular Networks

The introduction of device-to-device (D2D) into cellular networks poses many new challenges in the resource allocation design due to the co-channel interference caused by spectrum reuse and limited battery life of user equipments (UEs). In this paper, we propose a distributed interference-aware energy-efficient resource allocation algorithm to maximize each UE's energy efficiency (EE) subject to its specific quality of service (QoS) and maximum transmission power constraints. We model the resource allocation problem as a noncooperative game, in which each player is self-interested and wants to maximize its own EE. The formulated EE maximization problem is a non-convex problem and is transformed into a convex optimization problem by exploiting the properties of the nonlinear fractional programming. An iterative optimization algorithm is proposed and verified through computer simulations.

Energy Efficiency and Spectral Efficiency Tradeoff in Device-to-Device (D2D) Communications

In this letter, we investigate the tradeoff between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) in device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks with uplink channel reuse. The resource allocation problem is modeled as a noncooperative game, in which each user equipment (UE) is self-interested and wants to maximize its own EE. Given the SE requirement and maximum transmission power constraints, a distributed energy-efficient resource allocation algorithm is proposed by exploiting the properties of the nonlinear fractional programming. The relationships between the EE and SE tradeoff of the proposed algorithm and system parameters are analyzed and verified through computer simulations.

Range-Renewal Structure in Continued Fractions

Let $ω=[a_1, a_2, \cdots]$ be the infinite expansion of continued fraction for an irrational number $ω\in (0,1)$; let $R_n (ω)$ (resp. $R_{n, \, k} (ω)$, $R_{n, \, k+} (ω)$) be the number of distinct partial quotients each of which appears at least once (resp. exactly $k$ times, at least $k$ times) in the sequence $a_1, \cdots, a_n$. In this paper it is proved that for Lebesgue almost all $ω\in (0,1)$ and all $k \geq 1$, $$ \displaystyle \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{R_n (ω)}{\sqrt{n}}=\sqrt{\fracπ{\log 2}}, \quad \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{R_{n, \, k} (ω)}{R_n (ω)}=\frac{C_{2 k}^k}{(2k-1) \cdot 4^k}, \quad \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{R_{n, \, k} (ω)}{R_{n, \, k+} (ω)}=\frac{1}{2k}. $$ The Hausdorff dimensions of certain level sets about $R_n$ are discussed.
