Spikewhisper: Temporal Spike Backdoor Attacks on Federated Neuromorphic Learning over Low-power Devices

Federated neuromorphic learning (FedNL) leverages event-driven spiking neural networks and federated learning frameworks to effectively execute intelligent analysis tasks over amounts of distributed low-power devices but also perform vulnerability to poisoning attacks. The threat of backdoor attacks on traditional deep neural networks typically comes from time-invariant data. However, in FedNL, unknown threats may be hidden in time-varying spike signals. In this paper, we start to explore a novel vulnerability of FedNL-based systems with the concept of time division multiplexing, termed Spikewhisper, which allows attackers to evade detection as much as possible, as multiple malicious clients can imperceptibly poison with different triggers at different timeslices. In particular, the stealthiness of Spikewhisper is derived from the time-domain divisibility of global triggers, in which each malicious client pastes only one local trigger to a certain timeslice in the neuromorphic sample, and also the polarity and motion of each local trigger can be configured by attackers. Extensive experiments based on two different neuromorphic datasets demonstrate that the attack success rate of Spikewispher is higher than the temporally centralized attacks. Besides, it is validated that the effect of Spikewispher is sensitive to the trigger duration.

BOBA: Byzantine-Robust Federated Learning with Label Skewness

In federated learning, most existing robust aggregation rules (AGRs) combat Byzantine attacks in the IID setting, where client data is assumed to be independent and identically distributed. In this paper, we address label skewness, a more realistic and challenging non-IID setting, where each client only has access to a few classes of data. In this setting, state-of-the-art AGRs suffer from selection bias, leading to significant performance drop for particular classes; they are also more vulnerable to Byzantine attacks due to the increased variation among gradients of honest clients. To address these limitations, we propose an efficient two-stage method named BOBA. Theoretically, we prove the convergence of BOBA with an error of the optimal order. Our empirical evaluations demonstrate BOBA's superior unbiasedness and robustness across diverse models and datasets when compared to various baselines. Our code is available at https://github.com/baowenxuan/BOBA .

Toward Understanding Key Estimation in Learning Robust Humanoid Locomotion

Accurate state estimation plays a critical role in ensuring the robust control of humanoid robots, particularly in the context of learning-based control policies for legged robots. However, there is a notable gap in analytical research concerning estimations. Therefore, we endeavor to further understand how various types of estimations influence the decision-making processes of policies. In this paper, we provide quantitative insight into the effectiveness of learned state estimations, employing saliency analysis to identify key estimation variables and optimize their combination for humanoid locomotion tasks. Evaluations assessing tracking precision and robustness are conducted on comparative groups of policies with varying estimation combinations in both simulated and real-world environments. Results validated that the proposed policy is capable of crossing the sim-to-real gap and demonstrating superior performance relative to alternative policy configurations.

Pion-photon and kaon-photon transition distribution amplitudes in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is utilized to investigate the pion and kaon photon leading-twist transition distribution amplitudes using proper time regularization. Separately, the properties of the vector and axial vector pion photon transition distribution amplitudes are examined, and the results meet the desired properties. Our study involves sum rule and polynomiality condition. The vector and axial vector pion photon transition form factors that are present in the $π^+\rightarrow γe^+ ν$ process are the first Mellin moments of the pion photon transition distribution amplitudes. The vector transition form factor originates from the internal structure of hadrons, the axial current can be coupled to a pion, this pion is virtual, and its contribution will be present independently of the external hadrons. The kaon transition form factors are similar. The vector form factor's value at zero momentum transfer is determined by the axial anomaly, while this is not the case for the axial one. The vector and axial form factors, as well as the neutral pion vector form factor $F_{πγγ}(t)$, are depicted. According to our findings, the pion axial transition form factor is harder than the vector transition form factor and harder than the electromagnetic form factor. We also discuss the link between $π- γ$ and $γ- π$ transitions distribution amplitudes.

Design and Optimization of Functionally-graded Triangular Lattices for Multiple Loading Conditions

Aligning lattices based on local stress distribution is crucial for achieving exceptional structural stiffness. However, this aspect has primarily been investigated under a single load condition, where stress in 2D can be described by two orthogonal principal stress directions. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for designing and optimizing triangular lattice structures to accommodate multiple loading conditions, which means multiple stress fields. Our method comprises two main steps: homogenization-based topology optimization and geometry-based de-homogenization. To ensure the geometric regularity of triangular lattices, we propose a simplified version of the general rank-$3$ laminate and parameterize the design domain using equilateral triangles with unique thickness per edge. During optimization, the thicknesses and orientation of each equilateral triangle are adjusted based on the homogenized properties of triangular lattices. Our numerical findings demonstrate that this proposed simplification results in only a slight decrease in stiffness, while achieving triangular lattice structures with a compelling geometric regularity. In geometry-based de-homogenization, we adopt a field-aligned triangulation approach to generate a globally consistent triangle mesh, with each triangle oriented according to the optimized orientation field. Our approach for handling multiple loading conditions, akin to de-homogenization techniques for single loading conditions, yields highly detailed, optimized, spatially varying lattice structures. The method is computationally efficient, as simulations and optimizations are conducted at a low-resolution discretization of the design domain. Furthermore, since our approach is geometry-based, obtained structures are encoded into a compact geometric format that facilitates downstream operations such as editing and fabrication.

Stochastic Thermodynamics of Brownian motion in Temperature Gradient

We study stochastic thermodynamics of a Brownian particle which is subjected to a temperature gradient and is confined by an external potential. We first formulate an over-damped Ito-Langevin theory in terms of local temperature, friction coefficient, and steady state distribution, all of which are experimentally measurable. We then study the associated stochastic thermodynamics theory. We analyze the excess entropy production (EP) both at trajectory level and at ensemble level, and derive the Clausius inequality as well as the transient fluctuation theorem (FT). We also use molecular dynamics to simulate a Brownian particle inside a Lennard-Jones fluid and verify the FT. Remarkably we find that the FT remains valid even in the under-damped regime. We explain the possible mechanism underlying this surprising result.

Ecmas: Efficient Circuit Mapping and Scheduling for Surface Code

As the leading candidate of quantum error correction codes, surface code suffers from significant overhead, such as execution time. Reducing the circuit's execution time not only enhances its execution efficiency but also improves fidelity. However, finding the shortest execution time is NP-hard. In this work, we study the surface code mapping and scheduling problem. To reduce the execution time of a quantum circuit, we first introduce two novel metrics: Circuit Parallelism Degree and Chip Communication Capacity to quantitatively characterize quantum circuits and chips. Then, we propose a resource-adaptive mapping and scheduling method, named Ecmas, with customized initialization of chip resources for each circuit. Ecmas can dramatically reduce the execution time in both double defect and lattice surgery models. Furthermore, we provide an additional version Ecmas-ReSu for sufficient qubits, which is performance-guaranteed and more efficient. Extensive numerical tests on practical datasets show that Ecmas outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by reducing the execution time by 51.5% on average for double defect model. Ecmas can reach the optimal result in most benchmarks, reducing the execution time by up to 13.9% for lattice surgery model.

Fuzz Driver Synthesis for Rust Generic APIs

Fuzzing is a popular bug detection technique achieved by testing software executables with random inputs. This technique can also be extended to libraries by constructing executables that call library APIs, known as fuzz drivers. Automated fuzz driver synthesis has been an important research topic in recent years since it can facilitate the library fuzzing process. Nevertheless, existing approaches generally ignore generic APIs or simply treat them as normal APIs. As a result, they cannot generate effective fuzz drivers for generic APIs. This paper studies the automated fuzz driver synthesis problem for Rust libraries with generic APIs. The problem is essential because Rust emphasizes security, and generic APIs are widely employed in Rust crates. Each generic API can have numerous monomorphic versions as long as the type constraints are satisfied. The critical challenge to this problem lies in prioritizing these monomorphic versions and providing valid inputs for them. To address the problem, we extend existing API-dependency graphs to support generic APIs. By solving such dependencies and type constraints, we can generate a collection of candidate monomorphic APIs. Further, we apply a similarity-based filter to prune redundant versions, particularly if multiple monomorphic APIs adopt the identical trait implementation. Experimental results with 29 popular open-source libraries show that our approach can achieve promising generic API coverage with a low rate of invalid fuzz drivers. Besides, we find 23 bugs previously unknown in these libraries, with 18 bugs related to generic APIs.

Optimal BER Minimum Precoder Design for OTFS-Based ISAC Systems

This paper investigates the bit error rate (BER) minimum pre-coder design for an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS)-based integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, which is considered as a promising technique for enabling future wireless networks. In particular, the BER minimum problem takes into account the maximized available transmission power and the required sensing performance. We devise the precoder from the perspective of delay-Doppler (DD) domain by exploiting the equivalent DD channel. To address the non-convex design problem, we resort to minimizing the lower bound of the derived average BER. Afterwards, we propose a computationally iterative method to solve the dual problem at low cost. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed precoder and reveal the interplay between sensing and communication for dual-functional precoder design.

LLM-Twin: Mini-Giant Model-driven Beyond 5G Digital Twin Networking Framework with Semantic Secure Communication and Computation

Beyond 5G networks provide solutions for next-generation communications, especially digital twins networks (DTNs) have gained increasing popularity for bridging physical space and digital space. However, current DTNs networking frameworks pose a number of challenges especially when applied in scenarios that require high communication efficiency and multimodal data processing. First, current DTNs frameworks are unavoidable regarding high resource consumption and communication congestion because of original bit-level communication and high-frequency computation, especially distributed learning-based DTNs. Second, current machine learning models for DTNs are domain-specific (e.g. E-health), making it difficult to handle DT scenarios with multimodal data processing requirements. Last but not least, current security schemes for DTNs, such as blockchain, introduce additional overheads that impair the efficiency of DTNs. To address the above challenges, we propose a large language model (LLM) empowered DTNs networking framework, LLM-Twin. First, we design the mini-giant model collaboration scheme to achieve efficient deployment of LLM in DTNs, since LLM are naturally conducive to processing multimodal data. Then, we design a semantic-level high-efficiency, and secure communication model for DTNs. The feasibility of LLM-Twin is demonstrated by numerical experiments and case studies. To our knowledge, this is the first to propose LLM-based semantic-level digital twin networking framework.

A Near Field Low Time Complexity Beam Training Scheme Based on Spatial Orthogonal Decomposition

With the application of high-frequency communication and extremely large MIMO (XL-MIMO), the near-field effect has become increasingly apparent. The near-field beam design now requires consideration not only of the angle of arrival (AoA) information but also the curvature of arrival (CoA) information. However, due to their mutual coupling, orthogonally decomposing the near-field space becomes challenging. In this paper, we propose a Joint Autocorrelation and Cross-correlation (JAC) scheme to address the coupling information between near-field CoA and AoA. First, we analyze the similarity between the near-field problem and the Doppler problem in digital signal processing, revealing that the autocorrelation function can effectively extract CoA information. Subsequently, utilizing the obtained CoA, we transform the near-field problem into a far-field form, enabling the direct application of beam training schemes designed for the far-field in the near-field scenario. Finally, we analyze the characteristics of the far and near-field signal subspaces from the perspective of matrix theory and discuss how the JAC algorithm handles them. Numerical results demonstrate that the JAC scheme outperforms traditional methods in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Moreover, the time complexity of the JAC algorithm is $\mathcal O(N+1)$, significantly smaller than existing near-field beam training algorithms.

Minuet: Accelerating 3D Sparse Convolutions on GPUs

Sparse Convolution (SC) is widely used for processing 3D point clouds that are inherently sparse. Different from dense convolution, SC preserves the sparsity of the input point cloud by only allowing outputs to specific locations. To efficiently compute SC, prior SC engines first use hash tables to build a kernel map that stores the necessary General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) operations to be executed (Map step), and then use a Gather-GEMM-Scatter process to execute these GEMM operations (GMaS step). In this work, we analyze the shortcomings of prior state-of-the-art SC engines, and propose Minuet, a novel memory-efficient SC engine tailored for modern GPUs. Minuet proposes to (i) replace the hash tables used in the Map step with a novel segmented sorting double-traversed binary search algorithm that highly utilizes the on-chip memory hierarchy of GPUs, (ii) use a lightweight scheme to autotune the tile size in the Gather and Scatter operations of the GMaS step, such that to adapt the execution to the particular characteristics of each SC layer, dataset, and GPU architecture, and (iii) employ a padding-efficient GEMM grouping approach that reduces both memory padding and kernel launching overheads. Our evaluations show that Minuet significantly outperforms prior SC engines by on average $1.74\times$ (up to $2.22\times$) for end-to-end point cloud network executions. Our novel segmented sorting double-traversed binary search algorithm achieves superior speedups by $15.8\times$ on average (up to $26.8\times$) over prior SC engines in the Map step. The source code of Minuet is publicly available at https://github.com/UofT-EcoSystem/Minuet.

1002 km Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution with Finite-Key Analysis

Quantum key distribution (QKD) holds the potential to establish secure keys over long distances. The distance of point-to-point QKD secure key distribution is primarily impeded by the transmission loss inherent to the channel. In the quest to realize a large-scale quantum network, increasing the QKD distance under current technology is of great research interest. Here we adopt the 3-intensity sending-or-not-sending twin-field QKD (TF-QKD) protocol with the actively-odd-parity-pairing method. The experiment demonstrates the feasibility of secure QKD over a 1002 km fibre channel considering the finite size effect. The secure key rate is $3.11\times10^{-12}$ per pulse at this distance. Furthermore, by optimizing parameters for shorter fiber distances, we conducted performance tests on key distribution for fiber lengths ranging from 202 km to 505 km. Notably, the secure key rate for the 202 km, the normal distance between major cities, reached 111.74 kbps.

Asymmetric Diffusion Based Channel-Adaptive Secure Wireless Semantic Communications

Semantic communication has emerged as a new deep learning-based communication paradigm that drives the research of end-to-end data transmission in tasks like image classification, and image reconstruction. However, the security problem caused by semantic attacks has not been well explored, resulting in vulnerabilities within semantic communication systems exposed to potential semantic perturbations. In this paper, we propose a secure semantic communication system, DiffuSeC, which leverages the diffusion model and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to address this issue. With the diffusing module in the sender end and the asymmetric denoising module in the receiver end, the DiffuSeC mitigates the perturbations added by semantic attacks, including data source attacks and channel attacks. To further improve the robustness under unstable channel conditions caused by semantic attacks, we developed a DRL-based channel-adaptive diffusion step selection scheme to achieve stable performance under fluctuating environments. A timestep synchronization scheme is designed for diffusion timestep coordination between the two ends. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DiffuSeC shows higher robust accuracy than previous works under a wide range of channel conditions, and can quickly adjust the model state according to signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in unstable environments.

Quantum Circuit AutoEncoder

Quantum autoencoder is a quantum neural network model for compressing information stored in quantum states. However, one needs to process information stored in quantum circuits for many tasks in the emerging quantum information technology. In this work, generalizing the ideas of classical and quantum autoencoder, we introduce the model of Quantum Circuit AutoEncoder (QCAE) to compress and encode information within quantum circuits. We provide a comprehensive protocol for QCAE and design a variational quantum algorithm, varQCAE, for its implementation. We theoretically analyze this model by deriving conditions for lossless compression and establishing both upper and lower bounds on its recovery fidelity. Finally, we apply varQCAE to three practical tasks and numerical results show that it can effectively (1) compress the information within quantum circuits, (2) detect anomalies in quantum circuits, and (3) mitigate the depolarizing noise in quantum devices. This suggests that our algorithm is potentially applicable to other information processing tasks for quantum circuits.

Efficient Learning of Control Policies for Robust Quadruped Bounding using Pretrained Neural Networks

Bounding is one of the important gaits in quadrupedal locomotion for negotiating obstacles. The authors proposed an effective approach that can learn robust bounding gaits more efficiently despite its large variation in dynamic body movements. The authors first pretrained the neural network (NN) based on data from a robot operated by conventional model based controllers, and then further optimised the pretrained NN via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). In particular, the authors designed a reward function considering contact points and phases to enforce the gait symmetry and periodicity, which improved the bounding performance. The NN based feedback controller was learned in the simulation and directly deployed on the real quadruped robot Jueying Mini successfully. A variety of environments are presented both indoors and outdoors with the authors approach. The authors approach shows efficient computing and good locomotion results by the Jueying Mini quadrupedal robot bounding over uneven terrain.

Exploiting Point-Wise Attention in 6D Object Pose Estimation Based on Bidirectional Prediction

Traditional geometric registration based estimation methods only exploit the CAD model implicitly, which leads to their dependence on observation quality and deficiency to occlusion. To address the problem, the paper proposes a bidirectional correspondence prediction network with a point-wise attention-aware mechanism. This network not only requires the model points to predict the correspondence but also explicitly models the geometric similarities between observations and the model prior. Our key insight is that the correlations between each model point and scene point provide essential information for learning point-pair matches. To further tackle the correlation noises brought by feature distribution divergence, we design a simple but effective pseudo-siamese network to improve feature homogeneity. Experimental results on the public datasets of LineMOD, YCB-Video, and Occ-LineMOD show that the proposed method achieves better performance than other state-of-the-art methods under the same evaluation criteria. Its robustness in estimating poses is greatly improved, especially in an environment with severe occlusions.

United v.s. Divided, Deconfinement of Social Tension as a Topological Phase Transition

The proverbs "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and alike capture the essence of many body correlations in social relations, whose violation leads to social tension. We study how rule-breakers, who disrespect these norms, affect the structure and dynamics of signed social networks which tries to minimize social tension. We find two dynamic phases. A friendly society exhibits a "united phase" where insertion of a rule-breaker only leads to localized rearrangement. A hostile society exhibits a "divided phase", where insertion leads to macroscopic reorganization of social relations. In the divided phase, starting from the utopia state, where all relations are friendly, insertion of a {\em separatist}, a particular type of rule-breaker who makes friends with only half of its neighbors, leads to fragmentation, where the society breaks into many finite size, mutually antagonistic cliques. These phenomena are described by Ising lattice gauge theory, where social tension behave as $Z_2$ topological defects, which are confined in the united phase and deconfined in the divided phase. We further show that the connection between social dynamics and Ising lattice gauge theory is viable independently of connectivity structure of the social network.
