A Fast Radio Burst discovered in FAST drift scan survey

We report the discovery of a highly dispersed fast radio burst, FRB~181123, from an analysis of $\sim$1500~hr of drift-scan survey data taken using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The pulse has three distinct emission components, which vary with frequency across our 1.0--1.5~GHz observing band. We measure the peak flux density to be $>0.065$~Jy and the corresponding fluence $>0.2$~Jy~ms. Based on the observed dispersion measure of 1812~cm$^{-3}$~pc, we infer a redshift of $\sim 1.9$. From this, we estimate the peak luminosity and isotropic energy to be $\lesssim 2\times10^{43}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ and $\lesssim 2\times10^{40}$~erg, respectively. With only one FRB from the survey detected so far, our constraints on the event rate are limited. We derive a 95\% confidence lower limit for the event rate of 900 FRBs per day for FRBs with fluences $>0.025$~Jy~ms. We performed follow-up observations of the source with FAST for four hours and have not found a repeated burst. We discuss the implications of this discovery for our understanding of the physical mechanisms of FRBs.

Convergence of viscosity solutions of generalized contact Hamilton-Jacobi equations

For any compact connected manifold $M$, we consider the generalized contact Hamiltonian $H(x,p,u)$ defined on $T^*M\times\mathbb R$ which is conex in $p$ and monotonically increasing in $u$. Let $u_ε^-:M\rightarrow\mathbb R$ be the viscosity solution of the parametrized contact Hamilton-Jacobi equation \[ H(x,\partial_x u_ε^-(x),εu_ε^-(x))=c(H) \] with $c(H)$ being the Mañé Critical Value. We prove that $u_ε^-$ converges uniformly, as $ε\rightarrow 0_+$, to a specfic viscosity solution $u_0^-$ of the critical equation \[ H(x,\partial_x u_0^-(x),0)=c(H) \] which can be characterized as a minimal combination of associated Peierls barrier functions.

Computational Performance of a Germline Variant Calling Pipeline for Next Generation Sequencing

With the booming of next generation sequencing technology and its implementation in clinical practice and life science research, the need for faster and more efficient data analysis methods becomes pressing in the field of sequencing. Here we report on the evaluation of an optimized germline mutation calling pipeline, HummingBird, by assessing its performance against the widely accepted BWA-GATK pipeline. We found that the HummingBird pipeline can significantly reduce the running time of the primary data analysis for whole genome sequencing and whole exome sequencing while without significantly sacrificing the variant calling accuracy. Thus, we conclude that expansion of such software usage will help to improve the primary data analysis efficiency for next generation sequencing.

Heterogeneity Pursuit for Spatial Point Pattern with Application to Tree Locations: A Bayesian Semiparametric Recourse

Spatial point pattern data are routinely encountered. A flexible regression model for the underlying intensity is essential to characterizing the spatial point pattern and understanding the impacts of potential risk factors on such pattern. We propose a Bayesian semiparametric regression model where the observed spatial points follow a spatial Poisson process with an intensity function which adjusts a nonparametric baseline intensity with multiplicative covariate effects. The baseline intensity is piecewise constant, approached with a powered Chinese restaurant process prior which prevents an unnecessarily large number of pieces. The parametric regression part allows for variable selection through the spike-slab prior on the regression coefficients. An efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is developed for the proposed methods. The performance of the methods is validated in an extensive simulation study. In application to the locations of Beilschmiedia pendula trees in the Barro Colorado Island forest dynamics research plot in central Panama, the spatial heterogeneity is attributed to a subset of soil measurements in addition to geographic measurements with a spatially varying baseline intensity.

The range of non-Kitaev terms and fractional particles in RuCl$_3$

Significant efforts have focused on the magnetic excitations of relativistic Mott insulators, predicted to realize the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). This exactly solvable model involves a highly entangled state resulting from bond-dependent Ising interactions that produce excitations which are non-local in terms of spin flips. A key challenge in real materials is identifying the relative size of the non-Kitaev terms and their role in the emergence or suppression of fractional excitations. Here, we identify the energy and temperature boundaries of non-Kitaev interactions by direct comparison of the Raman susceptibility of RuCl3 with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the Kitaev QSLs. Moreover, we further confirm the fractional nature of the magnetic excitations, which is given by creating a pair of fermionic quasiparticles. Interestingly, this fermionic response remains valid in the non-Kitaev range. Our results and focus on the use of the Raman susceptibility provide a stringent new test for future theoretical and experimental studies of QSLs.

Learning from Explanations with Neural Execution Tree

While deep neural networks have achieved impressive performance on a range of NLP tasks, these data-hungry models heavily rely on labeled data, which restricts their applications in scenarios where data annotation is expensive. Natural language (NL) explanations have been demonstrated very useful additional supervision, which can provide sufficient domain knowledge for generating more labeled data over new instances, while the annotation time only doubles. However, directly applying them for augmenting model learning encounters two challenges: (1) NL explanations are unstructured and inherently compositional, which asks for a modularized model to represent their semantics, (2) NL explanations often have large numbers of linguistic variants, resulting in low recall and limited generalization ability. In this paper, we propose a novel Neural Execution Tree (NExT) framework to augment training data for text classification using NL explanations. After transforming NL explanations into executable logical forms by semantic parsing, NExT generalizes different types of actions specified by the logical forms for labeling data instances, which substantially increases the coverage of each NL explanation. Experiments on two NLP tasks (relation extraction and sentiment analysis) demonstrate its superiority over baseline methods. Its extension to multi-hop question answering achieves performance gain with light annotation effort.

Discovery and timing of pulsars in the globular cluster M13 with FAST

We report the discovery of a binary millisecond pulsar (namely PSR J1641+3627F or M13F) in the globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205) and timing solutions of M13A to F using observations made with the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). PSR J1641+3627F has a spin period of 3.00 ms and an orbital period of 1.4 days. The most likely companion mass is 0.16 M$_{\odot}$. M13A to E all have short spin periods and small period derivatives. We also confirm that the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1641$+$3627E (also M13E) is a black widow with a companion mass around 0.02 M$_{\odot}$. We find that all the binary systems have low eccentricities compared to those typical for globular cluster pulsars and that they decrease with distance from the cluster core. This is consistent with what is expected as this cluster has a very low encounter rate per binary.

The Fundamental Performance of FAST with 19-beam Receiver at L Band

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) passed national acceptance and is taking pilot cycle of 'Shared-Risk' observations. The 19-beam receiver covering 1.05-1.45 GHz was used for most of these observations. The electronics gain fluctuation of the system is better than 1\% over 3.5 hours, enabling enough stability for observations. Pointing accuracy, aperture efficiency and system temperature are three key parameters of FAST. The measured standard deviation of pointing accuracy is 7.9$''$, which satisfies the initial design of FAST. When zenith angle is less than 26.4$^\circ$, the aperture efficiency and system temperature around 1.4 GHz are $\sim$ 0.63 and less than 24 K for central beam, respectively. The measured value of these two parameters are better than designed value of 0.6 and 25 K, respectively. The sensitivity and stability of the 19-beam backend are confirmed to satisfy expectation by spectral HI observations toward N672 and polarization observations toward 3C286. The performance allows FAST to take sensitive observations in various scientific goals, from studies of pulsar to galaxy evolution.

Radial distribution of charm quarks in jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Heavy flavor physics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is a promising and active area to study the mass dependence of the "jet quenching" effects both at the RHIC and the LHC. In this talk, we present the first theoretical study on the $D^0$ meson radial distributions relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, where a nice agreement of our results with experimental data is observed. The in-medium parton propagations are described by a Monte Carlo transport model which uses the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA as input and includes elastic (collisional) and inelastic (radiative) in-medium interaction of heavy flavor jet. We find that, at low $D^0$ meson $p_T$, the radial distribution significantly shifts to larger radius indicating a strong diffusion effect, and the diffusion effects decrease quickly with $p_T$ ,which is consistent with the recent CMS measurements. We demonstrate that the angular deviation of charm quarks is sensitive to $D_s$ but not $\hat{q}$, which may provide new constrains on the collisional and radiative heavy quark energy loss.

Enabling Cyberattack-Resilient Load Forecasting through Adversarial Machine Learning

In the face of an increasingly broad cyberattack surface, cyberattack-resilient load forecasting for electric utilities is both more necessary and more challenging than ever. In this paper, we propose an adversarial machine learning (AML) approach, which can respond to a wide range of attack behaviors without detecting outliers. It strikes a balance between enhancing a system's robustness against cyberattacks and maintaining a reasonable degree of forecasting accuracy when there is no attack. Attack models and configurations for the adversarial training were selected and evaluated to achieve the desired level of performance in a simulation study. The results validate the effectiveness and excellent performance of the proposed method.

On Occupation Time for On-Off Processes with Multiple Off-States

The need to model a Markov renewal on-off process with multiple off-states arise in many applications such as economics, physics, and engineering. Characterization of the occupation time of one specific off-state marginally or two off-states jointly is crucial to understanding such processes. We derive the exact marginal and joint distributions of the off-state occupation times. The theoretical results are confirmed numerically in a simulation study. A special case when all holding times have Levy distribution is considered for the possibility of simplification of the formulas.

Comparison of deuterium retention in tungsten exposed to deuterium plasma and gas

Deuterium(D) retention behavior in tungsten(W) exposed to deuterium plasma and gas was studied by means of thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS): deuterium plasma exposure in which W was exposed to D plamsa with 35 eV/D at 393 K to the fluence of 3.8E24 D/m2; D2 gas charging in which W was exposed to D2 gas of 500 kPa at 773 K for 4 hours. TDS shows that the total D retention in plasma exposure W is 1.00E22 D/m2, one order of magnitude higher than that of gas charging W; however, the D2 desorption peak of gas charging W is 952 K, much higher than 691 K of plasma exposure W. The detrapping energies of deuterium were determined experimentally from the measured peak temperatures at different heating rates and were found to be 2.17 eV for gas charging W and 1.04 eV for plasma exposure W, respectively.

Extended calculations of energy levels, radiative properties, and lifetimes for oxygen-like Mo XXXV

Employing two state-of-the-art methods, second-order many-body perturbation theory and multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock, highly accurate calculations are performed for the lowest 318 fine-structure levels arising from the $2s^{2} 2p^{4}$, $2s 2p^{5}$, $2p^{6}$, $2s^{2} 2p^{3} 3l$, $2s 2p^{4} 3l$, $2p^{5} 3l$, and $2s^{2} 2p^{3} 4l$ configurations in O-like \mbox{Mo XXXV}. Complete and consistent atomic data, including excitation energies, lifetimes, wavelengths, and E1, E2, M1 line strengths, oscillator strengths, and transition rates among these 318 levels are provided. Comparisons are made between the present two data sets, as well as with other available experimental and theoretical values. The present data are accurate enough for identification and deblending of emission lines involving the $n=3,4$ levels and are also useful for modeling and diagnosing fusion plasmas\kw{. These data can} be considered as a benchmark for other calculations.

Bidding for Preferred Timing: An Auction Design for Electric Vehicle Charging Station Scheduling

This paper considers an electric vehicle charging scheduling setting where vehicle users can reserve charging time in advance at a charging station. In this setting, users are allowed to explicitly express their preferences over different start times and the length of charging periods for charging their vehicles. The goal is to compute optimal charging schedules which maximize the social welfare of all users given their time preferences and the state of charge of their vehicles. Assuming that users are self-interested agents who may behave strategically to advance their own benefits rather than the social welfare of all agents, we propose an iterative auction which computes high quality schedules and, at the same time, preserve users' privacy by progressively eliciting their preferences as necessary. We conduct a game theoretical analysis on the proposed iterative auction to prove its individual rationality and the best response for agents. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that the iterative auction can achieve high-efficiency solutions with a partial value information. Additionally, we explore the relationship between scheduling efficiency and information revelation in the auction.

Emergency DC Power Support Strategy Based on Coordinated Droop Control in Multi-Infeed HVDC System

With the complex hybrid AC-DC power system in China coming into being, the HVDC faults, such as DC block faults, have an enormous effect on the frequency stability of the AC side. In multi-infeed HVDC (MIDC) system, to improve the frequency stability of the receiving-end system, this paper proposes an emergency DC power support (EDCPS) strategy, which is based on a designed droop characteristic between the active power of LCC-HVDC lines and the receiving-end system frequency. Then, a coordinated optimization method is proposed to determine the droop coefficients of the MIDC lines. To test the proposed EDCPS method, the electromagnetic transient (EMT) model of a MIDC system is built on the CloudPSS platform, and the test results verify the effectiveness of the proposed EDCPS strategy.

Herglotz' variational principle and Lax-Oleinik evolution

We develop an elementary method to give a Lipschitz estimate for the minimizers in the problem of Herglotz' variational principle proposed in \cite{CCWY2018} in the time-dependent case. We deduce Erdmann's condition and the Euler-Lagrange equation separately under different sets of assumptions, by using a generalized du Bois-Reymond lemma. As an application, we obtain a representation formula for the viscosity solution of the Cauchy problem for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \begin{align*} D_tu(t,x)+H(t,x,D_xu(t,x),u(t,x))=0 \end{align*} and study the related Lax-Oleinik evolution.

Direct Evidence for Fermi Statistics from Proximity to the Kitaev Spin Liquid in RuCl3

A key characteristic of quantum spin liquids(QSL) is the presence of fractional excitations related to their entanglement properties, yet experimental verification of their statistics is missing. For example, in the potential Kitaev spin liquid, RuCl3 experiments uncovered signs of fractional particles, though not their Fermi statistics. Here we employ Raman scattering to reveal the true nature of the magnetic excitations, using improved experimental methods and analysis to remove the influence of laser heating and thermal fluctuations. Via the energy loss and gain spectra, we extract the energy and temperature dependence of the Raman susceptibility to prove RuCl3's magnetic response is given by pair creation of fermionic excitations. Furthermore, by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the exact Kitaev limit, we are able to discern the energy and temperature range where additional interaction terms are important. Our results open new directions in QSL research by providing a new way to investigate fractional excitations and the importance of terms causing spinon confinement.

Persistence versus stability for auto-regressive processes

The stability of an Auto-Regressive (AR) time sequence of finite order $L$, is determined by the maximal modulus $r^\star$ among all zeros of its generating polynomial. If $r^\star<1$ then the effect of input and initial conditions decays rapidly in time, whereas for $r^\star>1$ it is exponentially magnified (with constant or polynomially growing oscillations when $r^\star=1$). Persistence of such AR sequence (namely staying non-negative throughout $[0,N]$) with decent probability, requires the largest positive zero of the generating polynomial to have the largest multiplicity among all zeros of modulus $r^\star$. These objects are behind the rich spectrum of persistence probability decay for AR$_L$ with zero initial conditions and i.i.d. Gaussian input, all the way from bounded below to exponential decay in $N$, with intermediate regimes of polynomial and stretched exponential decay. In particular, for AR$_3$ the persistence decay power is expressed via the tail probability for Brownian motion to stay in a cone, exhibiting the discontinuity of such power decay between the AR$_3$ whose generating polynomial has complex zeros of rational versus irrational angles.
