Coulomb-bound four- and five-particle valleytronic states in an atomically-thin semiconductor

As hosts for tightly-bound electron-hole pairs carrying quantized angular momentum, atomically-thin semiconductors of transition metal dichalcogenides provide an appealing platform for optically addressing the valley degree of freedom. In particular, the valleytronic properties of neutral and charged excitons in these systems have been widely investigated. Meanwhile, correlated quantum states involving more particles are so far elusive and controversial. Here we present experimental evidence for valleytronic four-particle biexcitons and five-particle exciton-trions in high-quality monolayer tungsten diselenide samples. Through charge doping, thermal activation, and magnetic-field tuning measurements, we determined that the biexciton and exciton-trion optical emissions are bound with respect to the bright exciton and the trion respectively. Further, both the biexciton and the exciton-trion are intervalley bound states involving dark excitons, giving rise to emissions with large, negative valley polarizations in contrast to that of the well-known two-particle excitons. Our studies provide new opportunities for building valleytronic quantum devices harnessing high-order excitations.

Variational principle for contact Hamiltonian systems and its applications

In \cite{WWY}, the authors provided an implicit variational principle for the contact Hamilton's equations \begin{align*} \left\{ \begin{array}{l} \dot{x}=\frac{\partial H}{\partial p}(x,u,p),\\ \dot{p}=-\frac{\partial H}{\partial x}(x,u,p)-\frac{\partial H}{\partial u}(x,u,p)p,\quad (x,p,u)\in T^*M\times\mathbf{R},\\ \dot{u}=\frac{\partial H}{\partial p}(x,u,p)\cdot p-H(x,u,p), \end{array} \right. \end{align*} where $M$ is a closed, connected and smooth manifold and $H=H(x,u,p)$ is strictly convex, superlinear in $p$ and Lipschitz in $u$. In the present paper, we focus on two applications of the variational principle: 1. We provide a representation formula for the solution semigroup of the evolutionary equation \[ w_t(x,t)+H(x,w(x,t),w_x(x,t))=0; \] 2. We study the ergodic problem of the stationary equation via the solution semigroup. More precisely, we find pairs $(u,c)$ with $u\in C(M,\mathbf{R})$ and $c\in\mathbf{R}$ which, in the viscosity sense, satisfy the stationary partial differential equation \[ H(x,u(x),u_x(x))=c. \]

Multiplicities of Eigenvalues of the Diffusion Operator with Random Jumps from the Boundary

This paper deals with a non-self-adjoint differential operator which is associated with a diffusion process with random jumps from the boundary. Our main result is that the algebraic multiplicity of an eigenvalue is equal to its order as a zero of the characteristic function $Δ(λ) $. This can be used to determine the multiplicities of eigenvalues for concrete operators.

Benchmarking Atomic Data for Astrophysics: Be-like Ions between B II and Ne VII

Large-scale self-consistent multiconfiguration Dirac--Hartree--Fock and relativistic configuration interaction calculations are reported for the $n \leq 6$ levels in Be-like ions from B II to Ne VII. Effects from electron correlation are taken into account by means of large expansions in terms of a basis of configuration state functions, and a complete and accurate data set of excitation energies, lifetimes, wavelengths, and electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole line strengths, transition rates, and oscillator strengths for these levels is provided for each ion. Comparisons are made with available experimental and theoretical results. The uncertainty of excitation energies is assessed to be 0.01\% on average, which makes it possible to find and rule out misidentifications and aid new line identifications involving high-lying levels in astrophysical spectra. The complete data set is also useful for modeling and diagnosing astrophysical plasmas.

Superior valley polarization and coherence of 2s excitons in monolayer WSe2

We report experimental observation of 2s exciton radiative emission from monolayer tungsten diselenide, enabled by hexagonal boron nitride protected high-quality samples. The 2s luminescence is highly robust and persists up to 150K, offering a new quantum entity for manipulating the valley degree of freedom. Remarkably, the 2s exciton displays superior valley polarization and coherence than 1s under similar experimental conditions. This observation provides evidence that the Coulomb-exchange-interaction-driven valley-depolarization process, the Maialle-Silva-Sham mechanism, plays an important role in valley excitons of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

A High-resolution DOA Estimation Method with a Family of Nonconvex Penalties

The low-rank matrix reconstruction (LRMR) approach is widely used in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. As the rank norm penalty in an LRMR is NP-hard to compute, the nuclear norm (or the trace norm for a positive semidefinite (PSD) matrix) has been often employed as a convex relaxation of the rank norm. However, solving a nuclear norm convex problem may lead to a suboptimal solution of the original rank norm problem. In this paper, we propose to apply a family of nonconvex penalties on the singular values of the covariance matrix as the sparsity metrics to approximate the rank norm. In particular, we formulate a nonconvex minimization problem and solve it by using a locally convergent iterative reweighted strategy in order to enhance the sparsity and resolution. The problem in each iteration is convex and hence can be solved by using the optimization toolbox. Convergence analysis shows that the new method is able to obtain a suboptimal solution. The connection between the proposed method and the sparse signal reconstruction (SSR) is explored showing that our method can be regarded as a sparsity-based method with the number of sampling grids approaching infinity. Two feasible implementation algorithms that are based on solving a duality problem and deducing a closed-form solution of the simplified problem are also provided for the convex problem at each iteration to expedite the convergence. Extensive simulation studies are conducted to show the superiority of the proposed methods.

Eigenvalues of Sturm-Liouville Operators with Distributional Potentials

We introduce a novel approach for dealing with eigenvalue problems of Sturm-Liouville operators generated by the differential expression \begin{equation*} Ly=\frac{1}{r}\left( -(p\left[ y^{\prime }+sy\right] )^{\prime }+sp\left[ y^{\prime }+sy\right] +qy\right) \end{equation*} which is based on norm resolvent convergence of classical Sturm-Liouville operators. This enables us to describe the continuous dependence of the $n$-th eigenvalue on the space of self-adjoint boundary conditions and the coefficients of the differential equation after giving the inequalities among the eigenvalues. Moreover, oscillation properties of the eigenfunctions are also characterized. In particular, our main results can be applied to solve a class of Sturm-Liouville problems with transmission conditions.

Target Directed Event Sequence Generation for Android Applications

Testing is a commonly used approach to ensure the quality of software, of which model-based testing is a hot topic to test GUI programs such as Android applications (apps). Existing approaches mainly either dynamically construct a model that only contains the GUI information, or build a model in the view of code that may fail to describe the changes of GUI widgets during runtime. Besides, most of these models do not support back stack that is a particular mechanism of Android. Therefore, this paper proposes a model LATTE that is constructed dynamically with consideration of the view information in the widgets as well as the back stack, to describe the transition between GUI widgets. We also propose a label set to link the elements of the LATTE model to program snippets. The user can define a subset of the label set as a target for the testing requirements that need to cover some specific parts of the code. To avoid the state explosion problem during model construction, we introduce a definition "state similarity" to balance the model accuracy and analysis cost. Based on this model, a target directed test generation method is presented to generate event sequences to effectively cover the target. The experiments on several real-world apps indicate that the generated test cases based on LATTE can reach a high coverage, and with the model we can generate the event sequences to cover a given target with short event sequences.

An Algebra Model for the Higher Order Sum Rules

We introduce an algebra model to study higher order sum rules for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. We build the relation between the algebra model and sum rules, and prove an equivalent expression on the algebra side for the sum rules, involving a Hall-Littlewood type polynomial. By this expression, we recover an earlier result by Golinskii and Zlatǒs, and prove a new case - half of the Lukic conjecture in the case of a single critical point with arbitrary order.

Wilcoxon Rank-Based Tests for Clustered Data with R Package clusrank

Wilcoxon Rank-based tests are distribution-free alternatives to the popular two-sample and paired t-tests. For independent data, they are available in several R packages such as stats and coin. For clustered data, in spite of the recent methodological developments, there did not exist an R package that makes them available at one place. We present a package clusrank where the latest developments are implemented and wrapped under a unified user-friendly interface. With different methods dispatched based on the inputs, this package offers great flexibility in rank-based tests for various clustered data. Exact tests based on permutations are also provided for some methods. Details of the major schools of different methods are briefly reviewed. Usages of the package clusrank are illustrated with simulated data as well as a real dataset from an ophthalmological study. The package also enables convenient comparison between selected methods under settings that have not been studied before and the results are discussed.

A New Asymptotic Analysis Technique for Diversity Receptions Over Correlated Lognormal Fading Channels

Prior asymptotic performance analyses are based on the series expansion of the moment-generating function (MGF) or the probability density function (PDF) of channel coefficients. However, these techniques fail for lognormal fading channels because the Taylor series of the PDF of a lognormal random variable is zero at the origin and the MGF does not have an explicit form. Although lognormal fading model has been widely applied in wireless communications and free-space optical communications, few analytical tools are available to provide elegant performance expressions for correlated lognormal channels. In this work, we propose a novel framework to analyze the asymptotic outage probabilities of selection combining (SC), equal-gain combining (EGC) and maximum-ratio combining (MRC) over equally correlated lognormal fading channels. Based on these closed-form results, we reveal the followings: i) the outage probability of EGC or MRC becomes an infinitely small quantity compared to that of SC at large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); ii) channel correlation can result in an infinite performance loss at large SNR. More importantly, the analyses reveal insights into the long-standing problem of performance analyses over correlated lognormal channels at high SNR, and circumvent the time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation and numerical integration.

Automatic Bug Triage using Semi-Supervised Text Classification

In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised text classification approach for bug triage to avoid the deficiency of labeled bug reports in existing supervised approaches. This new approach combines naive Bayes classifier and expectation-maximization to take advantage of both labeled and unlabeled bug reports. This approach trains a classifier with a fraction of labeled bug reports. Then the approach iteratively labels numerous unlabeled bug reports and trains a new classifier with labels of all the bug reports. We also employ a weighted recommendation list to boost the performance by imposing the weights of multiple developers in training the classifier. Experimental results on bug reports of Eclipse show that our new approach outperforms existing supervised approaches in terms of classification accuracy.

Multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of forbidden transitions within the 3d^k ground configurations of highly charged ions (Z=72-83)

Extensive self-consistent multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) calculations are performed for the $3s^2 3p^6 3d^k$ ($k=1-9$) ground configurations of highly charged ions ($Z=72-83$). Complete and consistent data sets of \textbf{excitation energies}, wavelengths, line strengths, oscillator strengths, and magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) transition rates among all these levels are given. We have compared our results with the results available in the literature and the accuracy of the data is assessed. We predict new energy levels and transition probabilities where no other experimental or theoretical results are available, which will form the basis for future experimental work.

Copula Modeling for Data with Ties

Copula modeling has gained much attention in many fields recently with the advantage of separating dependence structure from marginal distributions. In real data, however, serious ties are often present in one or multiple margins, which cause problems to many rank-based statistical methods developed under the assumption of continuous data with no ties. Simple methods such as breaking the ties at random or using average rank introduce independence into the data and, hence, lead to biased estimation. We propose an estimation method that treats the ranks of tied data as being interval censored and maximizes a pseudo-likelihood based on interval censored pseudo-observations. A parametric bootstrap procedure that preserves the observed tied ranks in the data is adapted to assess the estimation uncertainty and perform goodness-of-fit tests. The proposed approach is shown to be very competitive in comparison to the simple treatments in a large scale simulation study. Application to a bivariate insurance data illustrates the methodology.

Intrinsic Phonon Bands in High-Quality Monolayer T' Molybdenum Ditelluride

The topologically nontrivial and chemically functional distorted octahedral (T') transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are a type of layered semimetal that has attracted significant recent attention. However, the properties of monolayer (1L) T'-TMDC, a fundamental unit of the system, is still largely unknown due to rapid sample degradation in air. Here we report that well-protected 1L CVD T'-MoTe2 exhibits sharp and robust intrinsic Raman bands, with intensities about one order of magnitude stronger than those from bulk T'-MoTe2. The high-quality samples enabled us to reveal the set of all nine even-parity zone-center optical phonons, providing reliable fingerprints for the previously elusive crystal. By performing light polarization and crystal orientation resolved scattering analysis, we can effectively distinguish the intrinsic modes from Te-metalloid-like modes A (~122 cm-1) and B (~141 cm-1) which are related to the sample degradation. Our studies offer a powerful non-destructive method for assessing sample quality and for monitoring sample degradation in situ, representing a solid advance in understanding the fundamental properties of 1L-T'-TMDCs.

Extended relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations of spectroscopic data for the $n \leq 6$ configurationsin ne-like ions between Cr XV and Kr XXVII

Level energies, wavelengths, electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transition rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths from combined relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations are reported for the 201 fine-structure states of the $2s^2 2p^6$, $2s^2 2p^5 3l$, $2s 2p^6 3l$, $2s^2 2p^5 4l$, $2s 2p^6 4l$, $2s^2 2p^5 5l$, and $2s^2 2p^5 6l$ configurations in all Ne-like ions between Cr XV and Kr XXVII. Calculated level energies and transition data are compared with experiments from the NIST and CHIANTI databases, and other recent benchmark calculations. The mean energy difference with the NIST experiments is only 0.05%. The present calculations significantly increase the amount of accurate spectroscopic data for the $n >3$ states in a number of Ne-like ions of astrophysics interest. A complete dataset should be helpful in analyzing new observations from the solar and other astrophysical sources, and is also likely to be useful for modeling and diagnosing a variety of plasmas including astronomical and fusion plasma.

Activation of new Raman modes by inversion symmetry breaking in type II Weyl semimetal candidate T'-MoTe2

We synthesized distorted octahedral(T') molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) and investigated its vibrational properties with Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory and symmetry analysis. Compared to the results from high temperature centrosymmetric monoclinic (T'mo) phase, four new Raman bands emerge in the low temperature orthorhombic (T'or) phase, which was recently predicted to be a type II Weyl semimetal. Crystal-angle-dependent, light-polarization-resolved measurements indicate that all the observed Raman peaks belong to two categories: those vibrating along the zigzag Mo atomic chain (z-mode) and those vibrating in the mirror plane (m-mode) perpendicular to the zigzag chain. Interestingly the low energy shear z-mode and shear m-mode, absent from the T'mo spectra, become activated when sample cooling induces a phase transition to the T'or crystal structure. We interpret this observation as a consequence of inversion-symmetry breaking, which is crucial for the existence of Weyl fermions in the layered crystal. Our temperature dependent Raman measurements further show that both the high energy m-mode at 130 cm-1 and the low energy shear m-mode at 12 cm-1 provide useful gauges for monitoring the broken inversion symmetry in the crystal.

Detection of False Data Injection Attacks in Smart Grid under Colored Gaussian Noise

In this paper, we consider the problems of state estimation and false data injection detection in smart grid when the measurements are corrupted by colored Gaussian noise. By modeling the noise with the autoregressive process, we estimate the state of the power transmission networks and develop a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector for the detection of false data injection attacks. We show that the conventional approach with the assumption of Gaussian noise is a special case of the proposed method, and thus the new approach has more applicability. {The proposed detector is also tested on an independent component analysis (ICA) based unobservable false data attack scheme that utilizes similar assumptions of sample observation.} We evaluate the performance of the proposed state estimator and attack detector on the IEEE 30-bus power system with comparison to conventional Gaussian noise based detector. The superior performance of {both observable and unobservable false data attacks} demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach and indicates a wide application on the power signal processing.
