Actions of Cusp Forms on Holomorphic Discrete Series and Von Neumann Algebras

A holomorphic discrete series representation $(L_π,H_π)$ of a connected semi-simple real Lie group $G$ is associated with an irreducible representation $(π,V_π)$ of its maximal compact subgroup $K$. The underlying space $H_π$ can be realized as certain holomorphic $V_π$-valued functions on the bounded symmetric domain $\mathcal{D}\cong G/K$. By the Berezin quantization, we transfer $B(H_π)$ into End$(V_π)$-valued functions on $\mathcal{D}$. For a lattice $Γ$ of $G$, we give the formula of a faithful normal tracial state on the commutant $L_π(Γ)'$ of the group von Neumann algebra $L_π(Γ)''$. We find the Toeplitz operators $T_f$'s associated with essentially bounded End$(V_π)$-valued functions $f$'s on $Γ\backslash\mathcal{D}$ generate the entire commutant $L_π(Γ)'$: $$\overline{\{T_f|f\in L^\infty(Γ\backslash\mathcal{D},{\rm End}(V_π))\}}^{\text{w.o.}}=L_π(Γ)'.$$ For any cuspidal automorphic form $f$ defined on $G$ (or $\mathcal{D}$) for $Γ$, we find the associated Toeplitz-type operator $T_f$ intertwines the actions of $Γ$ on these square-integrable representations. Hence the composite operator of the form $T_g^{*}T_f$ belongs to $L_π(Γ)'$. We prove these operators span $L^{\infty}(Γ\backslash\mathcal{D})$ and $$\overline{\langle\{\text{span}_{f,g} T_g^{*}T_f\}\otimes {\rm End}(V_π)\rangle}^{\text{w.o.}}=L_π(Γ)',$$ where $f,g$ run through holomorphic cusp forms for $Γ$ of same types. If $Γ$ is an infinite conjugacy classes group, we obtain a $\text{II}_1$ factor from cusp forms.

Third-order many-body expansion of OSV-MP2 wavefunction for low-order scaling analytical gradient computation

We present a many-body expansion (MBE) formulation and implementation for efficient computation of analytical energy gradients from OSV-MP2 theory based on our earlier work (Zhou et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2020, 16, 196-210). The third-order MBE(3) expansion of OSV-MP2 wavefunction was developed to adopt the orbital-specific clustering and long-range termination schemes, which avoids term-by-term differentiations of the MBE energy bodies. We achieve better efficiency by exploiting the algorithmic sparsity that allows to prune out insignificant fitting integrals and OSV relaxations. With these approximations, the present implementation is benchmarked on a range of molecules that show an economic scaling in the linear and quadratic regimes for computing MBE(3)-OSV-MP2 amplitude and gradient equations, respectively, and yields normal accuracy comparable to the original OSV-MP2 results. The MPI-3-based parallelism through shared memory one-sided communication is further developed for improving parallel scalability and memory accessibility by sorting the MBE(3) orbital clusters into independent tasks that are distributed on multiple processes across many nodes, supporting both global and local data locations in which selected MBE(3)-OSV-MP2 intermediates of different sizes are distinguished and accordingly placed. The accuracy and efficiency level of our MBE(3)-OSV-MP2 analytical gradient implementation is finally illustrated in two applications: we show that the subtle coordination structure differences of mechanically interlocked Cu-catenane complexes can be distinguished when tuning ligand lengths; and the porphycene molecular dynamics reveals the emergence of the vibrational signature arising from softened N-H stretching associated with hydrogen transfer, using an MP2 level of electron correlation and classical nuclei for the first time.

You Only Compress Once: Towards Effective and Elastic BERT Compression via Exploit-Explore Stochastic Nature Gradient

Despite superior performance on various natural language processing tasks, pre-trained models such as BERT are challenged by deploying on resource-constraint devices. Most existing model compression approaches require re-compression or fine-tuning across diverse constraints to accommodate various hardware deployments. This practically limits the further application of model compression. Moreover, the ineffective training and searching process of existing elastic compression paradigms[4,27] prevents the direct migration to BERT compression. Motivated by the necessity of efficient inference across various constraints on BERT, we propose a novel approach, YOCO-BERT, to achieve compress once and deploy everywhere. Specifically, we first construct a huge search space with 10^13 architectures, which covers nearly all configurations in BERT model. Then, we propose a novel stochastic nature gradient optimization method to guide the generation of optimal candidate architecture which could keep a balanced trade-off between explorations and exploitation. When a certain resource constraint is given, a lightweight distribution optimization approach is utilized to obtain the optimal network for target deployment without fine-tuning. Compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, YOCO-BERT provides more compact models, yet achieving 2.1%-4.5% average accuracy improvement on the GLUE benchmark. Besides, YOCO-BERT is also more effective, e.g.,the training complexity is O(1)for N different devices. Code is availablehttps://github.com/MAC-AutoML/YOCO-BERT.

Magnetar Giant Flare Originated GRB 200415A: Transient GeV emission, Time-Resolved $\rm E_p~ -~L_{iso}$ Correlation, and Implications

Giant flares (GFs) are unusual bursts from soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) that release an enormous amount of energy in a fraction of a second. The afterglow emission of these SGR-GFs or GF candidates is a highly beneficial means of discerning their composition, relativistic speed, and emission mechanisms. GRB 200415A is a recent GF candidate observed in a direction coincident with the nearby Sculptor galaxy at 3.5 Mpc. In this work, we searched for transient gamma-ray emission in past observations by Fermi-LAT in the direction of GRB 200415A. These observations confirm that GRB 200415A is observed as a transient GeV source only once. A pure pair-plasma fireball cannot provide the required energy for the interpretation of GeV afterglow emission and a baryonic poor outflow is additionally needed to explain the afterglow emission. A baryonic rich outflow is also viable, as it can explain the variability and observed quasi-thermal spectrum of the prompt emission if dissipation is happening below the photosphere via internal shocks. Using the peak energy ($E_p$) of the time-resolved prompt emission spectra and their fluxes ($F_p$), we found correlation between $E_p$ and $F_p$ or $E_p$ and isotropic luminosity $L_{\rm iso}$ for GRB 200415A. This supports the intrinsic nature of $E_p$-$E_{\rm iso}$ correlation found in SGRs-GFs, hence favoring a baryonic poor outflow. Our results also indicate a different mechanism at work during the initial spike, and that the evolution of the prompt emission spectral properties in this outflow would be intrinsically due to the injection process.

Dual-Stage Low-Complexity Reconfigurable Speech Enhancement

This paper proposes a dual-stage, low complexity, and reconfigurable technique to enhance the speech contaminated by various types of noise sources. Driven by input data and audio contents, the proposed dual-stage speech enhancement approach performs a coarse and fine processing in the first-stage and second-stage, respectively. In this paper, we demonstrate that the proposed speech enhancement solution significantly enhances the metrics of 3-fold QUality Evaluation of Speech in Telecommunication (3QUEST) consisting of speech mean-opinion-score (SMOS) and noise MOS (NMOS) for near-field and far-field applications. Moreover, the proposed speech enhancement approach greatly improves both the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and subjective listening experience. For comparisons, the traditional speech enhancement methods reduce the SMOS although they increase NMOS and SNR. In addition, the proposed speech enhancement scheme can be easily adopted in both capture path and speech render path for speech communication and conferencing systems, and voice-trigger applications.

Dynamic Enumeration of Similarity Joins

This paper considers enumerating answers to similarity-join queries under dynamic updates: Given two sets of $n$ points $A,B$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, a metric $ϕ(\cdot)$, and a distance threshold $r > 0$, report all pairs of points $(a, b) \in A \times B$ with $ϕ(a,b) \le r$. Our goal is to store $A,B$ into a dynamic data structure that, whenever asked, can enumerate all result pairs with worst-case delay guarantee, i.e., the time between enumerating two consecutive pairs is bounded. Furthermore, the data structure can be efficiently updated when a point is inserted into or deleted from $A$ or $B$. We propose several efficient data structures for answering similarity-join queries in low dimension. For exact enumeration of similarity join, we present near-linear-size data structures for $\ell_1, \ell_\infty$ metrics with $\log^{O(1)} n$ update time and delay. We show that such a data structure is not feasible for the $\ell_2$ metric for $d \ge 4$. For approximate enumeration of similarity join, where the distance threshold is a soft constraint, we obtain a unified linear-size data structure for $\ell_p$ metric, with $\log^{O(1)} n$ delay and update time. In high dimensions, we present an efficient data structure with worst-case delay-guarantee using locality sensitive hashing (LSH).

TRAPPIST Habitable Atmosphere Intercomparison (THAI) workshop report

The era of atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets is just around the corner. Modeling prior to observations is crucial in order to predict the observational challenges and to prepare for the data interpretation. This paper presents the report of the TRAPPIST Habitable Atmosphere Intercomparison (THAI) workshop (14-16 September 2020). A review of the climate models and parameterizations of the atmospheric processes on terrestrial exoplanets, model advancements and limitations, as well as direction for future model development was discussed. We hope that this report will be used as a roadmap for future numerical simulations of exoplanet atmospheres and maintaining strong connections to the astronomical community.

Efficiently Answering Durability Prediction Queries

We consider a class of queries called durability prediction queries that arise commonly in predictive analytics, where we use a given predictive model to answer questions about possible futures to inform our decisions. Examples of durability prediction queries include "what is the probability that this financial product will keep losing money over the next 12 quarters before turning in any profit?" and "what is the chance for our proposed server cluster to fail the required service-level agreement before its term ends?" We devise a general method called Multi-Level Splitting Sampling (MLSS) that can efficiently handle complex queries and complex models -- including those involving black-box functions -- as long as the models allow us to simulate possible futures step by step. Our method addresses the inefficiency of standard Monte Carlo (MC) methods by applying the idea of importance splitting to let one "promising" sample path prefix generate multiple "offspring" paths, thereby directing simulation efforts toward more promising paths. We propose practical techniques for designing splitting strategies, freeing users from manual tuning. Experiments show that our approach is able to achieve unbiased estimates and the same error guarantees as standard MC while offering an order-of-magnitude cost reduction.

A comparison of three ways to measure time-dependent densities with quantum simulators

Quantum algorithms are touted as a way around some classically intractable problems such as the simulation of quantum mechanics. At the end of all quantum algorithms is a quantum measurement whereby classical data is extracted and utilized. In fact, many of the modern hybrid-classical approaches are essentially quantum measurements of states with short quantum circuit descriptions. Here, we compare and examine three methods of extracting the time-dependent one-particle probability density from a quantum simulation: direct $Z$-measurement, Bayesian phase estimation and harmonic inversion. We have tested these methods in the context of the potential inversion problem of time-dependent density functional theory. Our test results suggest that direct measurement is the preferable method. We also highlight areas where the other two methods may be useful and report on tests using Rigetti's quantum virtual device. This study provides a starting point for imminent applications of quantum computing.

Durable Top-K Instant-Stamped Temporal Records with User-Specified Scoring Functions

A way of finding interesting or exceptional records from instant-stamped temporal data is to consider their "durability," or, intuitively speaking, how well they compare with other records that arrived earlier or later, and how long they retain their supremacy. For example, people are naturally fascinated by claims with long durability, such as: "On January 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant dropped 81 points against Toronto Raptors. Since then, this scoring record has yet to be broken." In general, given a sequence of instant-stamped records, suppose that we can rank them by a user-specified scoring function $f$, which may consider multiple attributes of a record to compute a single score for ranking. This paper studies "durable top-$k$ queries", which find records whose scores were within top-$k$ among those records within a "durability window" of given length, e.g., a 10-year window starting/ending at the timestamp of the record. The parameter $k$, the length of the durability window, and parameters of the scoring function (which capture user preference) can all be given at the query time. We illustrate why this problem formulation yields more meaningful answers in some practical situations than other similar types of queries considered previously. We propose new algorithms for solving this problem, and provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis on the complexities of the problem itself and of our algorithms. Our algorithms vastly outperform various baselines (by up to two orders of magnitude on real and synthetic datasets).

Probabilistic Multi-View Fusion of Active Stereo Depth Maps for Robotic Bin-Picking

The reliable fusion of depth maps from multiple viewpoints has become an important problem in many 3D reconstruction pipelines. In this work, we investigate its impact on robotic bin-picking tasks such as 6D object pose estimation. The performance of object pose estimation relies heavily on the quality of depth data. However, due to the prevalence of shiny surfaces and cluttered scenes, industrial grade depth cameras often fail to sense depth or generate unreliable measurements from a single viewpoint. To this end, we propose a novel probabilistic framework for scene reconstruction in robotic bin-picking. Based on active stereo camera data, we first explicitly estimate the uncertainty of depth measurements for mitigating the adverse effects of both noise and outliers. The uncertainty estimates are then incorporated into a probabilistic model for incrementally updating the scene. To extensively evaluate the traditional fusion approach alongside our own approach, we will release a novel representative dataset with multiple views for each bin and curated parts. Over the entire dataset, we demonstrate that our framework outperforms a traditional fusion approach by a 12.8% reduction in reconstruction error, and 6.1% improvement in detection rate. The dataset will be available at https://www.trailab.utias.utoronto.ca/robi.

A compact core-jet structure in the changing-look Seyfert NGC 2617

The nearby face-on spiral galaxy NGC 2617 underwent an unambiguous 'inside-out' multi-wavelength outburst in Spring 2013, and a dramatic Seyfert type change probably between 2010 and 2012, with the emergence of broad optical emission lines. To search for the jet activity associated with this variable accretion activity, we carried out multi-resolution and multi-wavelength radio observations. Using the very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5.0 GHz, we find that NGC 2617 shows a partially synchrotron self-absorbed compact radio core with a significant core shift, and an optically thin steep-spectrum jet extending towards the north up to about two parsecs in projection. We also observed NGC 2617 with the electronic Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) at 1.5 and 5.5 GHz, and revisited the archival data of the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The radio core had a stable flux density of about 1.4 mJy at 5.0 GHz between 2013 June and 2014 January, in agreement with the expectation of a supermassive black hole in the low accretion rate state. The northern jet component is unlikely to be associated with the 'inside-out' outburst of 2013. Moreover, we report that most optically selected changing-look AGN at z<0.83 are sub-mJy radio sources in the existing VLA surveys at 1.4 GHz, and it is unlikely that they are more active than normal AGN at radio frequencies.

On Ambrosetti-Malchiodi-Ni conjecture on two-dimensional smooth bounded domains: clustering concentration layers

We consider the clustering concentration on curves for solutions to the problem $$ \varepsilon^2 {\mathrm {div}}\big( \nabla_{{\mathfrak a}(y)} u\big)- V(y)u+u^p\, =\, 0, \quad u>0 \quad\mbox{in }Ω, \qquad \nabla_{{\mathfrak a}(y)} u\cdot ν\, =\, 0\quad\mbox{on } \partial Ω, $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^2$ with smooth boundary, the exponent $p$ is greater than $1$, $\varepsilon>0$ is a small parameter, $V$ is a uniformly positive smooth potential on $\barΩ$, and $ν$ denotes the outward normal of $\partial Ω$. For two positive smooth functions ${\mathfrak a}_1(y), {\mathfrak a}_2(y)$ on $\barΩ$, the operator $\nabla_{{\mathfrak a}(y)}$ is given by $$ \nabla_{{\mathfrak a}(y)} u=\Bigg({\mathfrak a}_1(y)\frac{\partial u}{\partial y_1}, \, {\mathfrak a}_2(y)\frac{\partial u}{\partial y_2}\Bigg). $$

Active Disturbance Rejection Control Design with Suppression of Sensor Noise Effects in Application to DC-DC Buck Power Converter

The performance of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) algorithms can be limited in practice by high-frequency measurement noise. In this work, this problem is addressed by transforming the high-gain extended state observer (ESO), which is the inherent element of ADRC, into a new cascade observer structure. Set of experiments, performed on a DC-DC buck power converter system, show that the new cascade ESO design, compared to the conventional approach, effectively suppresses the detrimental effect of sensor noise over-amplification while increasing the estimation/control performance. The proposed design is also analyzed with a low-pass filter at the converter output, which is a common technique for reducing measurement noise in industrial applications.

Oceanic Superrotation on Tidally Locked Planets

Is there oceanic superrotation on exoplanets? Atmospheric superrotation, characterized by west-to-east winds over the equator, is a common phenomenon in the atmospheres of Venus, Titan, Saturn, Jupiter, and tidally locked exoplanets. The stratospheric atmosphere of Earth is also superrotating during the westerly phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). However, whether the same phenomenon can occur in ocean is poorly known. Through numerical simulations, here we show that oceanic superrotation does occur on tidally locked terrestrial planets around low-mass stars. Its formation (spun-up from rest) is associated with surface winds, the equatorward momentum convergence by Rossby waves, and the eastward propagation of Kelvin waves in the ocean. Its maintenance is driven by equatorward momentum transports of coupled Rossby-Kelvin waves in the ocean excited from the uneven stellar radiation distribution. The width of the superrotation is mainly constrained by the Rossby deformation radius in the ocean, while its strength is more complex. Many factors can influence the strength, including planetary rotation rate, stellar flux, greenhouse gas concentration, seawater salinity, bottom drag, and a scaling theory is lack. This work confirms that superrotation can occur on tidally locked terrestrial planets with seawater oceans and suggests that it may also occur on tidally locked hot planets with magma oceans that will possibly be observed in the near future.

Wasserstein Distance guided Adversarial Imitation Learning with Reward Shape Exploration

The generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) has provided an adversarial learning framework for imitating expert policy from demonstrations in high-dimensional continuous tasks. However, almost all GAIL and its extensions only design a kind of reward function of logarithmic form in the adversarial training strategy with the Jensen-Shannon (JS) divergence for all complex environments. The fixed logarithmic type of reward function may be difficult to solve all complex tasks, and the vanishing gradients problem caused by the JS divergence will harm the adversarial learning process. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm named Wasserstein Distance guided Adversarial Imitation Learning (WDAIL) for promoting the performance of imitation learning (IL). There are three improvements in our method: (a) introducing the Wasserstein distance to obtain more appropriate measure in the adversarial training process, (b) using proximal policy optimization (PPO) in the reinforcement learning stage which is much simpler to implement and makes the algorithm more efficient, and (c) exploring different reward function shapes to suit different tasks for improving the performance. The experiment results show that the learning procedure remains remarkably stable, and achieves significant performance in the complex continuous control tasks of MuJoCo.

Auto-Ensemble: An Adaptive Learning Rate Scheduling based Deep Learning Model Ensembling

Ensembling deep learning models is a shortcut to promote its implementation in new scenarios, which can avoid tuning neural networks, losses and training algorithms from scratch. However, it is difficult to collect sufficient accurate and diverse models through once training. This paper proposes Auto-Ensemble (AE) to collect checkpoints of deep learning model and ensemble them automatically by adaptive learning rate scheduling algorithm. The advantage of this method is to make the model converge to various local optima by scheduling the learning rate in once training. When the number of lo-cal optimal solutions tends to be saturated, all the collected checkpoints are used for ensemble. Our method is universal, it can be applied to various scenarios. Experiment results on multiple datasets and neural networks demonstrate it is effective and competitive, especially on few-shot learning. Besides, we proposed a method to measure the distance among models. Then we can ensure the accuracy and diversity of collected models.

Underwater Acoustic Multiplexing Communication by Pentamode Metasurface

As the dominant information carrier in water, acoustic wave is widely used for underwater detection, communication and imaging. Even though underwater acoustic communication has been greatly improved in the past decades, it still suffers from the slow transmission speed and low information capacity. The recently developed acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing communication promises a high efficiency, large capacity and fast transmission speed for acoustic communication. However, the current works on OAM multiplexing communication mainly appears in airborne acoustics. The application of acoustic OAM for underwater communication remains to be further explored and studied. In this paper, an impedance matching pentamode demultiplexing metasurface is designed to realize multiplexing and demultiplexing in underwater acoustic communication. The impedance matching of the metasurface ensures high transmission of the transmitted information. The information encoded into two different OAM beams as two independent channels is numerically demonstrated by realizing real-time picture transfer. The simulation shows the effectiveness of the system for underwater acoustic multiplexing communication. This work paves the way for experimental demonstration and practical application of OAM multiplexing for underwater acoustic communication
