A Critical Analysis of Image-based Camera Pose Estimation Techniques

Camera, and associated with its objects within the field of view, localization could benefit many computer vision fields, such as autonomous driving, robot navigation, and augmented reality (AR). In this survey, we first introduce specific application areas and the evaluation metrics for camera localization pose according to different sub-tasks (learning-based 2D-2D task, feature-based 2D-3D task, and 3D-3D task). Then, we review common methods for structure-based camera pose estimation approaches, absolute pose regression and relative pose regression approaches by critically modelling the methods to inspire further improvements in their algorithms such as loss functions, neural network structures. Furthermore, we summarise what are the popular datasets used for camera localization and compare the quantitative and qualitative results of these methods with detailed performance metrics. Finally, we discuss future research possibilities and applications.

Tsallis and Rényi deformations linked via a new $λ$-duality

Tsallis and Rényi entropies, which are monotone transformations of each other, are deformations of the celebrated Shannon entropy. Maximization of these deformed entropies, under suitable constraints, leads to the $q$-exponential family which has applications in non-extensive statistical physics, information theory and statistics. In previous information-geometric studies, the $q$-exponential family was analyzed using classical convex duality and Bregman divergence. In this paper, we show that a generalized $λ$-duality, where $λ= 1 - q$ is the constant information-geometric curvature, leads to a generalized exponential family which is essentially equivalent to the $q$-exponential family and has deep connections with Rényi entropy and optimal transport. Using this generalized convex duality and its associated logarithmic divergence, we show that our $λ$-exponential family satisfies properties that parallel and generalize those of the exponential family. Under our framework, the Rényi entropy and divergence arise naturally, and we give a new proof of the Tsallis/Rényi entropy maximizing property of the $q$-exponential family. We also introduce a $λ$-mixture family which may be regarded as the dual of the $λ$-exponential family, and connect it with other mixture-type families. Finally, we discuss a duality between the $λ$-exponential family and the $λ$-logarithmic divergence, and study its statistical consequences.

Optimal and two-step adaptive quantum detector tomography

Quantum detector tomography is a fundamental technique for calibrating quantum devices and performing quantum engineering tasks. In this paper, we design optimal probe states for detector estimation based on the minimum upper bound of the mean squared error (UMSE) and the maximum robustness. We establish the minimum UMSE and the minimum condition number for quantum detectors and provide concrete examples that can achieve optimal detector tomography. In order to enhance the estimation precision, we also propose a two-step adaptive detector tomography algorithm to optimize the probe states adaptively based on a modified fidelity index. We present a sufficient condition on when the estimation error of our two-step strategy scales inversely proportional to the number of state copies. Moreover, the superposition of coherent states is used as probe states for quantum detector tomography and the estimation error is analyzed. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the proposed optimal and adaptive quantum detector tomography methods.

Weighted Encoding Optimization for Dynamic Single-pixel Imaging and Sensing

Using single-pixel detection, the end-to-end neural network that jointly optimizes both encoding and decoding enables high-precision imaging and high-level semantic sensing. However, for varied sampling rates, the large-scale network requires retraining that is laboursome and computation-consuming. In this letter, we report a weighted optimization technique for dynamic rate-adaptive single-pixel imaging and sensing, which only needs to train the network for one time that is available for any sampling rates. Specifically, we introduce a novel weighting scheme in the encoding process to characterize different patterns' modulation efficiency. While the network is training at a high sampling rate, the modulation patterns and corresponding weights are updated iteratively, which produces optimal ranked encoding series when converged. In the experimental implementation, the optimal pattern series with the highest weights are employed for light modulation, thus achieving highly-efficient imaging and sensing. The reported strategy saves the additional training of another low-rate network required by the existing dynamic single-pixel networks, which further doubles training efficiency. Experiments on the MNIST dataset validated that once the network is trained with a sampling rate of 1, the average imaging PSNR reaches 23.50 dB at 0.1 sampling rate, and the image-free classification accuracy reaches up to 95.00\% at a sampling rate of 0.03 and 97.91\% at a sampling rate of 0.1.

Joint Activity and Blind Information Detection for UAV-Assisted Massive IoT Access

Grant-free non-coherent index-modulation (NC-IM) has been recently considered as an efficient massive access scheme for enabling cost- and energy-limited Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices that transmit small data packets. This paper investigates the grant-free NC-IM scheme combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for applicant to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based massive IoT access. Specifically, each device is assigned a unique non-orthogonal signature sequence codebook. Each active device transmits one of its signature sequences in the given time-frequency resources, by modulating the information in the index of the transmitted signature sequence. For small-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) deployed at the UAV-based aerial base station (BS), by jointly exploiting the space-time-frequency domain device activity, we propose a computationally efficient space-time-frequency joint activity and blind information detection (JABID) algorithm with significantly improved detection performance. Furthermore, for large-scale MIMO deployed at the aerial BS, by leveraging the sparsity of the virtual angular-domain channels, we propose an angular-domain based JABID algorithm for improving the system performance with reduced access latency. In addition, for the case of high mobility IoT devices and/or UAVs, we introduce a time-frequency spread transmission (TFST) strategy for the proposed JABID algorithms to combat doubly-selective fading channels. Finally, extensive simulation results are illustrated to verify the superiority of the proposed algorithms and the TFST strategy over known state-of-the-art algorithms.

How Powerful are Interest Diffusion on Purchasing Prediction: A Case Study of Taocode

A taocode is a kind of specially coded text-link on Taobao(the world's biggest online shopping website), through which users can share messages about products with each other. Analyzing taocodes can potentially facilitate understanding of the social relationships between users and, more excitingly, their online purchasing behaviors under the influence of taocode diffusion. This paper innovatively investigates the problem of online purchasing predictions from an information diffusion perspective, with taocode as a case study. Specifically, we conduct profound observational studies on a large-scale real-world dataset from Taobao, containing over 100M Taocode sharing records. Inspired by our observations, we propose InfNet, a dynamic GNN-based framework that models the information diffusion across Taocode. We then apply InfNet to item purchasing predictions. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets validate the effectiveness of InfNet compared with 8 state-of-the-art baselines.

Ultra-Fast Accurate AoA Estimation via Automotive Massive-MIMO Radar

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, enabled by millimeter-wave virtual MIMO techniques, provides great promises to the high-resolution automotive sensing and target detection in unmanned ground/aerial vehicles (UGA/UAV). As a long-established problem, however, existing subspace methods suffer from either high complexity or low accuracy. In this work, we propose two efficient methods, to accomplish fast subspace computation and accurate angle of arrival (AoA) acquisition. By leveraging randomized low-rank approximation, our fast multiple signal classification (MUSIC) methods, relying on random sampling and projection techniques, substantially accelerate the subspace estimation by orders of magnitude. Moreover, we establish the theoretical bounds of our proposed methods, which ensure the accuracy of the approximated pseudo-spectrum. As demonstrated, the pseudo-spectrum acquired by our fast-MUSIC would be highly precise; and the estimated AoA is almost as accurate as standard MUSIC. In contrast, our new methods are tremendously faster than standard MUSIC. Thus, our fast-MUSIC enables the high-resolution real-time environmental sensing with massive MIMO radars, which has great potential in the emerging unmanned systems.

Hawking radiation from nonrotating singularity-free black holes in conformal gravity

We study the sparsity of Hawking radiation from nonrotating singularity-free black holes in conformal gravity. We give a rigorous bound on the greybody factor for massless scalar field and calculate the sparsity of Hawking radiation from the black hole. Besides, we investigate the dependence of the greybody factor and the sparsity of Hawking radiation on the conformal parameters. Our study shows that the Hawking radiation from the black hole is extremely sparse. When the conformal parameters are large, the increase of conformal parameters will lead to an even more sparse Hawking radiation, while to a less sparse Hawking radiation if the conformal parameters are small.

VDO-SLAM: A Visual Dynamic Object-aware SLAM System

Combining Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) estimation and dynamic scene modelling can highly benefit robot autonomy in dynamic environments. Robot path planning and obstacle avoidance tasks rely on accurate estimations of the motion of dynamic objects in the scene. This paper presents VDO-SLAM, a robust visual dynamic object-aware SLAM system that exploits semantic information to enable accurate motion estimation and tracking of dynamic rigid objects in the scene without any prior knowledge of the objects' shape or geometric models. The proposed approach identifies and tracks the dynamic objects and the static structure in the environment and integrates this information into a unified SLAM framework. This results in highly accurate estimates of the robot's trajectory and the full SE(3) motion of the objects as well as a spatiotemporal map of the environment. The system is able to extract linear velocity estimates from objects' SE(3) motion providing an important functionality for navigation in complex dynamic environments. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed system on a number of real indoor and outdoor datasets and the results show consistent and substantial improvements over the state-of-the-art algorithms. An open-source version of the source code is available.

Asynchronous Semi-Decentralized Federated Edge Learning for Heterogeneous Clients

Federated edge learning (FEEL) has drawn much attention as a privacy-preserving distributed learning framework for mobile edge networks. In this work, we investigate a novel semi-decentralized FEEL (SD-FEEL) architecture where multiple edge servers collaborate to incorporate more data from edge devices in training. Despite the low training latency enabled by fast edge aggregation, the device heterogeneity in computational resources deteriorates the efficiency. This paper proposes an asynchronous training algorithm for SD-FEEL to overcome this issue, where edge servers can independently set deadlines for the associated client nodes and trigger the model aggregation. To deal with different levels of staleness, we design a staleness-aware aggregation scheme and analyze its convergence performance. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm in achieving faster convergence and better learning performance.

On Reproducing Kernel Banach Spaces: Generic Definitions and Unified Framework of Constructions

Recently, there has been emerging interest in constructing reproducing kernel Banach spaces (RKBS) for applied and theoretical purposes such as machine learning, sampling reconstruction, sparse approximation and functional analysis. Existing constructions include the reflexive RKBS via a bilinear form, the semi-inner-product RKBS, the RKBS with $\ell^1$ norm, the $p$-norm RKBS via generalized Mercer kernels, etc. The definitions of RKBS and the associated reproducing kernel in those references are dependent on the construction. Moreover, relations among those constructions are unclear. We explore a generic definition of RKBS and the reproducing kernel for RKBS that is independent of construction. Furthermore, we propose a framework of constructing RKBSs that unifies existing constructions mentioned above via a continuous bilinear form and a pair of feature maps. A new class of Orlicz RKBSs is proposed. Finally, we develop representer theorems for machine learning in RKBSs constructed in our framework, which also unifies representer theorems in existing RKBSs.

Cell-Free Massive MIMO for 6G Wireless Communication Networks

The recently commercialized fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication networks achieved many improvements, including air interface enhancement, spectrum expansion, and network intensification by several key technologies, such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter-wave communications, and ultra-dense networking. Despite the deployment of 5G commercial systems, wireless communications is still facing many challenges to enable connected intelligence and a myriad of applications such as industrial Internet-of-things, autonomous systems, brain-computer interfaces, digital twin, tactile Internet, etc. Therefore, it is urgent to start research on the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems. Among the candidate technologies for such systems, cell-free massive MIMO which combines the advantages of distributed systems and massive MIMO is considered as a key solution to enhance the wireless transmission efficiency and becomes the international frontier. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on cell-free massive MIMO for 6G wireless communication networks, especially from the signal processing perspective. We focus on enabling physical layer technologies for cell-free massive MIMO, such as user association, pilot assignment, transmitter and receiver design, as well as power control and allocation. Furthermore, some current and future research problems are highlighted.

Atomistic View of Homogeneous Nucleation of Water into Polymorphic Ices

Water is one of the most abundant substances on Earth, and ice, i.e., solid water, has more than 18 known phases. Normally ice in nature exists only as Ice Ih, Ice Ic, or a stacking disordered mixture of both. Although many theoretical efforts have been devoted to understanding the thermodynamics of different ice phases at ambient temperature and pressure, there still remains many puzzles. We simulated the reversible transitions between water and different ice phases by performing full atom molecular dynamics simulations. Using the enhanced sampling method MetaITS with the two selected X-ray diffraction peak intensities as collective variables, the ternary phase diagrams of liquid water, ice Ih, ice Ic at multiple were obtained. We also present a simple physical model which successfully explains the thermodynamic stability of ice. Our results agree with experiments and leads to a deeper understanding of the ice nucleation mechanism.

Android HIV: A Study of Repackaging Malware for Evading Machine-Learning Detection

Machine learning based solutions have been successfully employed for automatic detection of malware on Android. However, machine learning models lack robustness to adversarial examples, which are crafted by adding carefully chosen perturbations to the normal inputs. So far, the adversarial examples can only deceive detectors that rely on syntactic features (e.g., requested permissions, API calls, etc), and the perturbations can only be implemented by simply modifying application's manifest. While recent Android malware detectors rely more on semantic features from Dalvik bytecode rather than manifest, existing attacking/defending methods are no longer effective. In this paper, we introduce a new attacking method that generates adversarial examples of Android malware and evades being detected by the current models. To this end, we propose a method of applying optimal perturbations onto Android APK that can successfully deceive the machine learning detectors. We develop an automated tool to generate the adversarial examples without human intervention. In contrast to existing works, the adversarial examples crafted by our method can also deceive recent machine learning based detectors that rely on semantic features such as control-flow-graph. The perturbations can also be implemented directly onto APK's Dalvik bytecode rather than Android manifest to evade from recent detectors. We demonstrate our attack on two state-of-the-art Android malware detection schemes, MaMaDroid and Drebin. Our results show that the malware detection rates decreased from 96% to 0% in MaMaDroid, and from 97% to 0% in Drebin, with just a small number of codes to be inserted into the APK.

Machine Learning Based Cyber Attacks Targeting on Controlled Information: A Survey

Stealing attack against controlled information, along with the increasing number of information leakage incidents, has become an emerging cyber security threat in recent years. Due to the booming development and deployment of advanced analytics solutions, novel stealing attacks utilize machine learning (ML) algorithms to achieve high success rate and cause a lot of damage. Detecting and defending against such attacks is challenging and urgent so that governments, organizations, and individuals should attach great importance to the ML-based stealing attacks. This survey presents the recent advances in this new type of attack and corresponding countermeasures. The ML-based stealing attack is reviewed in perspectives of three categories of targeted controlled information, including controlled user activities, controlled ML model-related information, and controlled authentication information. Recent publications are summarized to generalize an overarching attack methodology and to derive the limitations and future directions of ML-based stealing attacks. Furthermore, countermeasures are proposed towards developing effective protections from three aspects -- detection, disruption, and isolation.

Device-Independent-Quantum-Randomness-Enhanced Zero-Knowledge Proof

Zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) is a fundamental cryptographic primitive that allows a prover to convince a verifier of the validity of a statement without leaking any further information. As an efficient variant of ZKP, non-interactive zero-knowledge proof (NIZKP) adopting the Fiat-Shamir heuristic is essential to a wide spectrum of applications, such as federated learning, blockchain and social networks. However, the heuristic is typically built upon the random oracle model making ideal assumptions about hash functions, which does not hold in reality and thus undermines the security of the protocol. Here, we present a quantum resolution to the problem. Instead of resorting to a random oracle model, we implement a quantum randomness service. This service generates random numbers certified by the loophole-free Bell test and delivers them with postquantum cryptography (PQC) authentication. Employing this service, we conceive and implement a NIZKP of the three-colouring problem. By bridging together three prominent research themes, quantum non-locality, PQC and ZKP, we anticipate this work to open a new paradigm of quantum information science.

$k$Folden: $k$-Fold Ensemble for Out-Of-Distribution Detection

Out-of-Distribution (OOD) detection is an important problem in natural language processing (NLP). In this work, we propose a simple yet effective framework $k$Folden, which mimics the behaviors of OOD detection during training without the use of any external data. For a task with $k$ training labels, $k$Folden induces $k$ sub-models, each of which is trained on a subset with $k-1$ categories with the left category masked unknown to the sub-model. Exposing an unknown label to the sub-model during training, the model is encouraged to learn to equally attribute the probability to the seen $k-1$ labels for the unknown label, enabling this framework to simultaneously resolve in- and out-distribution examples in a natural way via OOD simulations. Taking text classification as an archetype, we develop benchmarks for OOD detection using existing text classification datasets. By conducting comprehensive comparisons and analyses on the developed benchmarks, we demonstrate the superiority of $k$Folden against current methods in terms of improving OOD detection performances while maintaining improved in-domain classification accuracy. The code and datasets can be found at: \url{https://github.com/ShannonAI/kfolden-ood-detection}.

Robust Ultraviolet to Near-infrared Quantum Emitters in Hexagonal Boron Nitride up to 1100 K

A stable single-photon source working at high temperatures with high brightness and covering full band emission from one host material is critically important for quantum technologies. Here, we find that the certain hBN single-photon emissions (SPEs) can be significantly enhanced by lasers with special wavelengths, which largely broaden the wavelength range of the hBN emitters, down to ultraviolet (357 nm) and up to near-infrared (912 nm). Importantly, these hBN SPEs are still stable even at the temperature up to 1100 Kelvin. The decoupling between single-photon and acoustic phonon is observed at high temperatures. Our work suggests that hBN can be a good host material for generating single-photon sources with ultrabroad wavelength range.
