Constraining Dark Energy With Stacked Concave Lenses

Low density regions are less affected by the nonlinear structure formation and baryonic physics. They are ideal places for probing the nature of dark energy, a possible explanation for the cosmic acceleration. Unlike void lensing, which requires identifications of individual voids, we study the stacked lensing signals around the low-density-positions (LDP), defined as places that are devoid of foreground bright galaxies in projection. The method allows a direct comparison with numerical results by drawing correspondence between the bright galaxies with halos. It leads to lensing signals that are significant enough for differentiating several dark energy models. In this work, we use the CFHTLenS catalogue to define LDPs, as well as measuring their background lensing signals. We consider several different definitions of the foreground bright galaxies (redshift range \& magnitude cut). Regarding the cosmological model, we run six simulations: the first set of simulations have the same initial conditions, with $\rm{w_{de}=-1,-0.5,-0.8,-1.2}$; the second set of simulations include a slightly different $Λ$CDM model and a w(z) model from \cite{2017NatAs...1..627Z}. The lensing results indicate that the models with $\rm{w_{de}=-0.5,-0.8}$ are not favored, and the other four models all achieve comparable agreement with the data.

Flow instabilities in solar jets in their upstream and downstream regimes

Using the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly 304 A images obtained from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we study two jets which occurred during the M5.8 class flare on 2017 April 3 and the M5.5 class flare on 2016 July 23, respectively. During the M5.8 class flare, many vortex-like structures occurred in the upstream and downstream regimes of the associated jet. While the jet was ejected upwards to the corona, some dark material at its base flowed through a bright structure with a velocity of 110 km/s. The boundary between the material and the structure changed from smooth to uneven. Later, the jet material at the higher atmosphere started to fall down with velocities of over 200 km/s, and the left boundary of the jet developed into a sawtooth pattern. The vortex-like structures were formed, and the growth rates of two structures were presented. During the M5.5 class flare, we also observed many vortex-like structures in the downstream regime of the jet. At the late stage of the jet, some material at the south boundary of the jet fell back to the solar surface, and vortex-like structures at the boundary grew from ripple-like minim into vortices with diameters of 3.4-5.4 Mm. The growth rates of the vortex-like structures were calculated. We suggest that the vortex-like structures in the upstream regime are the manifestations of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, and those in the downstream regime are simultaneously driven by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and Raleigh-Taylor instability.

Testing Shear Recovery with Field Distortion

The tilt, rotation, or offset of each CCD with respect to the focal plane, as well as the distortion of the focal plane itself, cause shape distortions to the observed objects, an effect typically known as field distortion (FD). We point out that FD provides a unique way of quantifying the accuracy of cosmic shear measurement. The idea is to stack the shear estimators from galaxies that share similar FD-induced shape distortions. Given that the latter can be calculated with parameters from astrometric calibrations, the accuracy of the shear estimator can be directly tested on real images. It provides a way to calibrate the multiplicative and additive shear recovery biases within the scientific data itself, without requiring simulations or any external data sets. We use the CFHTLenS images to demonstrate the accuracy of the Fourier_Quad shear recovery method. We highlight some details in our image processing pipeline, including background removal, source identification and deblending, astrometric calibration, star selection for PSF reconstruction, noise reduction, etc.. We show that in the shear ranges of -0.005 < g_1 < 0.005 and -0.008 < g_2 < 0.008, the multiplicative biases are at the level of < 0.04. Slight additive biases on the order of 5E-4 (6 sigma) are identified for sources provided by the official CFHTLenS catalog (not using its shear catalog), but are minor (4 sigma) for source catalog generated by our Fourier_Quad pipeline.

On echo intervals in gravitational wave echo analysis

Gravitational wave echoes, if they exist, could encode important information of new physics from the strong gravity regime. Current echo searches usually assume constant interval echoes (CIEs) a priori, although unequal interval echoes (UIEs) are also possible. Despite of its simplicity, the using of CIE templates need to be properly justified, especially given the high sensitivity of future gravitational wave detectors. In this paper, we assess the necessity of UIE templates in echo searches. By reconstructing injected UIE signals with both CIE and UIE templates, we show that the CIE template may significantly misinterpret the echo signals if the variation of the interval is greater than the statistical errors of the interval, which is further confirmed by a Bayesian analysis on model stelection. We also forecast the constraints on the echo intervals given by future GW detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Einstein Telescope.

Wireless Data Acquisition for Edge Learning: Data-Importance Aware Retransmission

By deploying machine-learning algorithms at the network edge, edge learning can leverage the enormous real-time data generated by billions of mobile devices to train AI models, which enable intelligent mobile applications. In this emerging research area, one key direction is to efficiently utilize radio resources for wireless data acquisition to minimize the latency of executing a learning task at an edge server. Along this direction, we consider the specific problem of retransmission decision in each communication round to ensure both reliability and quantity of those training data for accelerating model convergence. To solve the problem, a new retransmission protocol called data-importance aware automatic-repeat-request (importance ARQ) is proposed. Unlike the classic ARQ focusing merely on reliability, importance ARQ selectively retransmits a data sample based on its uncertainty which helps learning and can be measured using the model under training. Underpinning the proposed protocol is a derived elegant communication-learning relation between two corresponding metrics, i.e., signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and data uncertainty. This relation facilitates the design of a simple threshold based policy for importance ARQ. The policy is first derived based on the classic classifier model of support vector machine (SVM), where the uncertainty of a data sample is measured by its distance to the decision boundary. The policy is then extended to the more complex model of convolutional neural networks (CNN) where data uncertainty is measured by entropy. Extensive experiments have been conducted for both the SVM and CNN using real datasets with balanced and imbalanced distributions. Experimental results demonstrate that importance ARQ effectively copes with channel fading and noise in wireless data acquisition to achieve faster model convergence than the conventional channel-aware ARQ.

The dynamics of AR 12700 in its early emerging phase I: interchange reconnection

The emergence of active regions (ARs) leads to various dynamic activities. Using high-resolution and long-lasting H$α$ observations from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope, we report the dynamics of NOAA AR 12700 in its emerging phase on 26 February 2018 in detail. In this AR, constant interchange reconnections between emerging fibrils and preexisting ones were detected. Driven by the flux emergence, small-scale fibrils observed in H$α$ wavelength continuously emerged at the center of the AR and reconnected with the ambient preexisting fibrils, forming new longer fibrils. We investigate three scenarios of such interchange reconnection in two hours. Specially, the third scenario of reconnection resulted in the formation of longer fibrils that show pronounced rotation motion. To derive the evolution of the magnetic structure during the reconnections, we perform nonlinear force-free field extrapolations. The extrapolated three-dimensional magnetic fields clearly depict a set of almost potential emerging loops, two preexisting flux ropes at 03:00 UT before the second reconnection scenario, and a set of newly formed loops with less twist at 03:48 UT after the third reconnection scenario. All of these extrapolated structures are consistent with the fibrils detected in H$α$ wavelength. The aforementioned observations and extrapolation results suggest that the constant interchange reconnections resulted in that the magnetic twist was redistributed from preexisting flux ropes towards the newly-formed system with longer magnetic structure and weaker twist.

Gravitational floating orbits around hairy black holes

We show that gravitational floating orbits may exist for black holes with rotating hairs. These black hole hairs could originate from the superradiant growth of a light axion field around the rotating black holes. If a test particle rotates around the black hole, its tidal field may resonantly trigger the dynamical transition between a co-rotating state and a dissipative state of the axion cloud. A tidal bulge is generated by the beating of modes, which feeds angular momentum back to the test particle. Following this mechanism, an extreme-mass-ratio-inspiral (EMRI) system, as a source for LISA, may face delayed merger as the EMRI orbit stalls by the tidal response of the cloud, until the cloud being almost fully dissipated. If the cloud depletes slower than the average time separation between EMRI mergers, it may lead to interesting interaction between multiple EMRI objects at comparable radii. Inclined EMRIs are also expected to migrate towards the black hole equatorial plane due to the tidal coupling and gravitational-wave dissipation. Floating stellar-mass back holes or stars around the nearby intermediate-mass black holes may generate strong gravitational-wave emission detectable by LISA.

Design of remote control software of near infrared Sky Brightness Monitor in Antarctica

The Near-infrared Sky Brightness Monitor (NIRBM) aims to measure the middle infrared sky background in Antarctica. The NIRBM mainly consists of an InGaAs detector, a chopper, a reflector, a cooler and a black body. The reflector can rotate to scan the sky with a field of view ranging from 0° to 180°. Electromechanical control and weak signal readout functions are accomplished by the same circuit, whose core chip is a STM32F407VG microcontroller. Considering the environment is harsh for humans in Antarctica, a multi-level remote control software system is designed and implemented. A set of EPICS IOCs are developed to control each hardware module independently via serial port communication with the STM32 microcontroller. The tornado web framework and PyEpics are introduced as a combination where PyEpics is used to monitor or change the EPICS Process Variables, functioning as a client for the EPICS framework. Tornado is responsible for the specific operation process of inter-device collaboration, and expose a set of interfaces to users to make calls. Considering the high delay and low bandwidth of the network environment, the tornado back-end is designed as a master-and-agent architecture to improve domestic user experience. The master node is deployed in Antarctic while multiple agent nodes can be deployed domestic. The master and agent nodes communicate with each other through the WebSocket protocol to exchange latest information so that bandwidth is saved. The GUI is implemented in the form of single-page application based on the Vue framework which communicates with tornado through WebSocket and AJAX requests. The web page integrates device control, data curve drawing, alarm display, auto observation and other functions together.

Prospects for axion searches with Advanced LIGO through binary mergers

The observation of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by LIGO/VIRGO and the associated electromagnetic counterpart provides a high precision test of orbital dynamics, and therefore a new and sensitive probe of extra forces and new radiative degrees of freedom. Axions are one particularly well-motivated class of extensions to the Standard Model leading to new forces and sources of radiation, which we focus on in this paper. Using an effective field theory (EFT) approach, we calculate the first post-Newtonian corrections to the orbital dynamics, radiated power, and gravitational waveform for binary neutron star mergers in the presence of an axion. This result is applicable to many theories which add an extra massive scalar degree of freedom to General Relativity. We then perform a detailed forecast of the potential for Advanced LIGO to constrain the free parameters of the EFT, and map these to the mass $m_a$ and decay constant $f_a$ of the axion. At design sensitivity, we find that Advanced LIGO can potentially exclude axions with $m_a \lesssim 10^{-11} \ {\rm eV}$ and $f_a \sim (10^{14} - 10^{17}) \ {\rm GeV}$. There are a variety of complementary observational probes over this region of parameter space, including the orbital decay of binary pulsars, black hole superradiance, and laboratory searches. We comment on the synergies between these various observables.

Hybrid Beamforming for Millimeter Wave Systems Using the MMSE Criterion

Hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) has recently emerged as an attractive technique for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It well balances the demand for sufficient beamforming gains to overcome the propagation loss and the desire to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. In this paper, the mean square error (MSE) is chosen as the performance metric to characterize the transmission reliability. Using the minimum sum-MSE criterion, we investigate the HBF design for broadband mmWave transmissions. To overcome the difficulty of solving the multi-variable design problem, the alternating minimization method is adopted to optimize the hybrid transmit and receive beamformers alternatively. Specifically, a manifold optimization based HBF algorithm is firstly proposed, which directly handles the constant modulus constraint of the analog component. Its convergence is then proved. To reduce the computational complexity, we then propose a low-complexity general eigenvalue decomposition based HBF algorithm in the narrowband scenario and three algorithms via the eigenvalue decomposition and orthogonal matching pursuit methods in the broadband scenario. A particular innovation in our proposed alternating minimization algorithms is a carefully designed initialization method, which leads to faster convergence. {Furthermore, we extend the sum-MSE based design to that with weighted sum-MSE, which is then connected to the spectral efficiency based design.} Simulation results show that the proposed HBF algorithms achieve significant performance improvement over existing ones, and perform close to full-digital beamforming.

A Tractable Framework for Coverage Analysis of Cellular-Connected UAV Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently found abundant applications in the public and civil domains. To ensure reliable control and navigation, connecting UAVs to controllers via existing cellular network infrastructure, i.e., ground base stations (GBSs), has been proposed as a promising solution. Nevertheless, it is highly challenging to characterize the communication performance of cellular-connected UAVs, due to their unique propagation conditions. This paper proposes a tractable framework for the coverage analysis of cellular-connected UAV networks, which consists of a new blockage model and an effective approach to handle general fading channels. In particular, a line-of-sight (LoS) ball model is proposed to capture the probabilistic propagation in UAV communication systems, and a tractable expression is derived for the Laplace transform of the aggregate interference with general Nakagami fading. This framework leads to a tractable expression for the coverage probability, which in turn helps to investigate the impact of the GBS density. Specifically, a tight lower bound on the optimal density that maximizes the coverage probability is derived. Numerical results show that the proposed LoS ball model is accurate, and the optimal GBS density decreases when the UAV altitude increases.

Quantitative Verification of Masked Arithmetic Programs against Side-Channel Attacks

Power side-channel attacks, which can deduce secret data via statistical analysis, have become a serious threat. Masking is an effective countermeasure for reducing the statistical dependence between secret data and side-channel information. However, designing masking algorithms is an error-prone process. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach combing type inference and model-counting to verify masked arithmetic programs against side-channel attacks. The type inference allows an efficient, lightweight procedure to determine most observable variables whereas model-counting accounts for completeness. In case that the program is not perfectly masked, we also provide a method to quantify the security level of the program. We implement our methods in a tool QMVerif and evaluate it on cryptographic benchmarks. The experimental results show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Quasi-periodic Fast Propagating Magnetoacoustic Waves during the Magnetic Reconnection Between Solar Coronal Loops

Employing Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) multi-wavelength images, we have presented coronal condensations caused by magnetic reconnection between a system of open and closed solar coronal loops. In this Letter, we report the quasi-periodic fast magnetoacoustic waves propagating away from the reconnection region upward across the higher-lying open loops during the reconnection process. On 2012 January 19, reconnection between the higher-lying open loops and lower-lying closed loops took place, and two sets of newly reconnected loops formed. Thereafter, cooling and condensations of coronal plasma occurred in the magnetic dip region of higher-lying open loops. During the reconnection process, disturbances originating from the reconnection region propagate upward across the magnetic dip region of higher-lying loops with the mean speed and mean speed amplitude of 200 and 30 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The mean speed of the propagating disturbances decreases from $\sim$230 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$150 km s$^{-1}$ during the coronal condensation process, and then increases to $\sim$220 km s$^{-1}$. This temporal evolution of the mean speed anti-correlates with the light curves of the AIA 131 and 304 Å~channels that show the cooling and condensation process of coronal plasma. Furthermore, the propagating disturbances appear quasi-periodically with a peak period of 4 minutes. Our results suggest that the disturbances represent the quasi-periodic fast propagating magnetoacoustic (QFPM) waves originating from the magnetic reconnection between coronal loops.

ABS: an Analytical method of Blind Separation of CMB from foregrounds

Extracting CMB B-mode polarization from complicated foregrounds is a challenging task in searching for inflationary gravitational waves. We propose the ABS method as a blind and analytical solution to this problem. It applies to the measured cross bandpower between different frequency bands and obtains the CMB B-mode bandpower analytically. It does not rely on assumptions of foregrounds and does not require multiple parameter fitting. Testing against a variety of foregrounds, survey frequency configurations and instrument noise, we verify its applicability and numerical stability. The ABS method also applies to CMB temperature, E-mode polarization, the thermal Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect, spectral distortion, and even significantly different problems such as cosmic magnification.

Signature of the interaction between dark sectors in the reionization process

We consider the reionization process in a cosmological model in which dark matter interacts with dark energy. Using a semi-analytical reionization model, we compute the evolution of the ionized fraction in terms of its spatial average and linear perturbations. We show that certain types of interactions between dark matter and dark energy can significantly affect the reionization history. We calculate the 21 cm signals in the interaction models, and compare the results with the predictions of the ${\rm ΛCDM}$ model.

A comparative study on the bottleneck flow between preschool children and adults under different movement motivations

Understanding on children's movement characteristics is significant to improve their safety levels especially under emergencies. In this work, we performed laboratory experiment to investigate the dynamics of preschool children passing through bottlenecks under high movement motivation. It is found that the relations between flow and bottleneck width for adults and children can be unified when the body size and movement motivation are considered in certain way. High movement motivation leads to competition among pedestrians, which results in different spatial-temporal distribution of the density and speed compared to normal movement of adult. Based on Voronoi method, an arch-like distribution is observed for the children movement with competition, whereas it is teardrop-shaped for the adults without competition. The peak density of children, which reaches nearly 14 ped/m2, appears at the place 30 cm away from the bottleneck entrance. However, it is about 100 cm to the bottleneck for adults. Besides, several typical behaviors of children like guiding, pushing as well as playing are observed in the experiment. The findings in this study will benefit the evacuation drill design as well as the facility design for children.

The fundamental diagrams of elderly pedestrian flow in straight corridors under different densities

The worldwide population is aging and countries are facing ongoing challenges in meeting the transportation demand of the elderly. In this study, we investigate the movement characteristics of elders in the straight corridor and compare them with that of young adults. The free speeds of the elderly (about 1.28m/s) are obviously slower than that of the young people (about 1.4m/s) in the laboratory experiments. It was found that the fundamental diagram of the elderly shows the similar trend compared with that of young pedestrians. However, at the same densities the speeds of the elderly are always lower than that of the young pedestrians in the observed density range (< 3.0 m2). When the mean velocity calculated from pedestrian movement at low densities is considered, the two normalized fundamental diagrams agree quite well. The reasons for the differences are explored by analyzing the border distance, the nearest neighbors as well as the spatial distribution areas of the pedestrians. Our findings can be useful for the improvement of the pedestrian modelling and the design of pedestrian facilities that are much friendlier to the elderly.

Experimental demonstration of nonbilocality with truly independent sources and strict locality constraints

Entanglement swapping entangles two particles that have never interacted[1], which implicitly assumes that each particle carries an independent local hidden variable, i.e., the presence of bilocality[2]. Previous experimental studies of bilocal hidden variable models did not fulfill the central requirement that the assumed two local hidden variable models must be mutually independent and hence their conclusions are flawed on the rejection of local realism[3-5]. By harnessing the laser phase randomization[6] rising from the spontaneous emission to the stimulated emission to ensure the independence between entangled photon-pairs created at separate sources and separating relevant events spacelike to satisfy the no-signaling condition, for the first time, we simultaneously close the loopholes of independent source, locality and measurement independence in an entanglement swapping experiment in a network. We measure a bilocal parameter of 1.181$\pm$0.004 and the CHSH game value of 2.652$\pm$0.059, indicating the rejection of bilocal hidden variable models by 45 standard deviations and local hidden variable models by 11 standard deviations. We hence rule out local realism and justify the presence of quantum nonlocality in our network experiment. Our experimental realization constitutes a fundamental block for a large quantum network. Furthermore, we anticipate that it may stimulate novel information processing applications[7,8].
