Knowledge Reasoning via Jointly Modeling Knowledge Graphs and Soft Rules

Knowledge graphs (KGs) play a crucial role in many applications, such as question answering, but incompleteness is an urgent issue for their broad application. Much research in knowledge graph completion (KGC) has been performed to resolve this issue. The methods of KGC can be classified into two major categories: rule-based reasoning and embedding-based reasoning. The former has high accuracy and good interpretability, but a major challenge is to obtain effective rules on large-scale KGs. The latter has good efficiency and scalability, but it relies heavily on data richness and cannot fully use domain knowledge in the form of logical rules. We propose a novel method that injects rules and learns representations iteratively to take full advantage of rules and embeddings. Specifically, we model the conclusions of rule groundings as 0-1 variables and use a rule confidence regularizer to remove the uncertainty of the conclusions. The proposed approach has the following advantages: 1) It combines the benefits of both rules and knowledge graph embeddings (KGEs) and achieves a good balance between efficiency and scalability. 2) It uses an iterative method to continuously improve KGEs and remove incorrect rule conclusions. Evaluations on two public datasets show that our method outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods, improving performance by 2.7\% and 4.3\% in mean reciprocal rank (MRR).

UAV aided Metaverse over Wireless Communications: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

Metaverse is expected to create a virtual world closely connected with reality to provide users with immersive experience with the support of 5G high data rate communication technique. A huge amount of data in physical world needs to be synchronized to the virtual world to provide immersive experience for users, and there will be higher requirements on coverage to include more users into Metaverse. However, 5G signal suffers severe attenuation, which makes it more expensive to maintain the same coverage. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a promising candidate technique for future implementation of Metaverse as a low-cost and high-mobility platform for communication devices. In this paper, we propose a proximal policy optimization (PPO) based double-agent cooperative reinforcement learning method for channel allocation and trajectory control of UAV to collect and synchronize data from the physical world to the virtual world, and expand the coverage of Metaverse services economically. Simulation results show that our proposed method is able to achieve better performance compared to the benchmark approaches.

Frustrated magnetic interactions and quenched spin fluctuations in CrAs

The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in helimagnets (CrAs, MnP) has attracted considerable interest in understanding the relationship between complex magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. However, the nature of the magnetism and magnetic interactions that drive the unusual double-helical magnetic order in these materials remains unclear. Here, we report neutron scattering measurements of magnetic excitations in CrAs single crystals at ambient pressure. Our experiments reveal well defined spin wave excitations up to about 150 meV with a pseudogap below 7 meV, which can be effectively described by the Heisenberg model with nearest neighbor exchange interactions. Most surprisingly, the spin excitations are largely quenched above the Neel temperature, in contrast to cuprates and iron pnictides where the spectral weight is mostly preserved in the paramagnetic state. Our results suggest that the helimagnetic order is driven by strongly frustrated exchange interactions, and that CrAs is at the verge of itinerant and correlation-induced localized states, which is therefore highly pressure-tunable and favorable for superconductivity.

Enhancing Federated Learning with spectrum allocation optimization and device selection

Machine learning (ML) is a widely accepted means for supporting customized services for mobile devices and applications. Federated Learning (FL), which is a promising approach to implement machine learning while addressing data privacy concerns, typically involves a large number of wireless mobile devices to collect model training data. Under such circumstances, FL is expected to meet stringent training latency requirements in the face of limited resources such as demand for wireless bandwidth, power consumption, and computation constraints of participating devices. Due to practical considerations, FL selects a portion of devices to participate in the model training process at each iteration. Therefore, the tasks of efficient resource management and device selection will have a significant impact on the practical uses of FL. In this paper, we propose a spectrum allocation optimization mechanism for enhancing FL over a wireless mobile network. Specifically, the proposed spectrum allocation optimization mechanism minimizes the time delay of FL while considering the energy consumption of individual participating devices; thus ensuring that all the participating devices have sufficient resources to train their local models. In this connection, to ensure fast convergence of FL, a robust device selection is also proposed to help FL reach convergence swiftly, especially when the local datasets of the devices are not independent and identically distributed (non-iid). Experimental results show that (1) the proposed spectrum allocation optimization method optimizes time delay while satisfying the individual energy constraints; (2) the proposed device selection method enables FL to achieve the fastest convergence on non-iid datasets.

Mobile Edge Computing for the Metaverse

The Metaverse has emerged as the next generation of the Internet. It aims to provide an immersive, persistent virtual space where people can live, learn, work and interact with each other. However, the existing technology is inadequate to guarantee high visual quality and ultra-low latency service for the Metaverse players. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a paradigm where proximal edge servers are utilized to perform computation-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks like image processing and video analysis. In MEC, the large amount of data is processed by edge servers closest to where it is captured, thus significantly reducing the latency and providing almost real-time performance. In this paper, we integrate fundamental elements (5G and 6G wireless communications, Blockchain, digital twin and artificial intelligence) into the MEC framework to facilitate the Metaverse. We also elaborate on the research problems and applications in the MEC-enabled Metaverse. Finally, we provide a case study to establish a thorough knowledge of the user utility maximization problem in a real-world scenario and gain some insights about trends in potential research directions.

Unified, User and Task (UUT) Centered Artificial Intelligence for Metaverse Edge Computing

The Metaverse can be considered the extension of the present-day web, which integrates the physical and virtual worlds, delivering hyper-realistic user experiences. The inception of the Metaverse brings forth many ecosystem services such as content creation, social entertainment, in-world value transfer, intelligent traffic, healthcare. These services are compute-intensive and require computation offloading onto a Metaverse edge computing server (MECS). Existing Metaverse edge computing approaches do not efficiently and effectively handle resource allocation to ensure a fluid, seamless and hyper-realistic Metaverse experience required for Metaverse ecosystem services. Therefore, we introduce a new Metaverse-compatible, Unified, User and Task (UUT) centered artificial intelligence (AI)- based mobile edge computing (MEC) paradigm, which serves as a concept upon which future AI control algorithms could be built to develop a more user and task-focused MEC.

The cohomology of left-symmetric conformal algebra and its applications

In this paper, we develop a cohomology theory of a left-symmetric conformal algebra and study its some applications. We define the cohomology of a left-symmetric conformal algebra, and then give an isomorphism between the cohomology spaces of the left-symmetric conformal algebra and its sub-adjacent Lie conformal algebra. As applications of the cohomology theory, we study linear deformations, formal $1$-parameter deformations, $T^*$-extensions of a left-symmetric conformal algebra respectively and obtain some properties.

Resource Allocation for Augmented Reality Empowered Vehicular Edge Metaverse

Metaverse is considered to be the evolution of the next-generation networks, providing users with experience sharing at the intersection between physical and digital. Augmented reality (AR) is one of the primary supporting technologies in the Metaverse, which can seamlessly integrate real-world information with virtual world information to provide users with an immersive interactive experience. Extraordinarily, AR has brought new opportunities for assisting safe driving. Nevertheless, achieving efficient execution of AR tasks and increasing system revenue are the main challenges faced by the Metaverse's AR in-vehicle applications. In this paper, we are the first to propose an efficient resource allocation framework for AR-empowered vehicular edge Metaverse to improve system utility. We formulate an optimization problem featuring multidimensional control to concurrently maximize data utility at the Metaverse operator side and minimize energy consumption at the vehicles' side, which jointly considers the computational resource allocation on the Metaverse server, and AR vehicles' CPU frequency, transmit power, and computation model size. Notwithstanding, the major impediment is how to design an efficient algorithm to obtain the solutions of the optimization. Wherefore, we do this by decoupling the optimization variables. We first derive the optimal computation model size by the binary search, followed by obtaining the optimal power allocation by the bisection method and finding a closed-form solution to the optimal CPU frequency of AR vehicles, and finally, attain the optimal allocation of computational resource on the server by the Lagrangian dual method. To estimate the performance of our proposed scheme, we establish three baseline schemes as a comparison, and simulation manifests that our proposed scheme balances the operator's reward and the energy consumption of vehicles.

A Survey of Mobile Edge Computing for the Metaverse: Architectures, Applications, and Challenges

Metaverse is an emerging virtual universe where humans can have real-time interactions and solid social links like in the physical world, and it opens up a new era of Internet and interactions. In Metaverse, an immersive and photorealistic environment promotes social activities, including education, meetings, and shopping of digital avatars based on critical technologies, including 3D rendering, extended reality, digital twins, artificial intelligence, and Blockchain. However, the limitations of computation, storage, and energy resources restrict the development of Metaverse, and a series of system issues (e.g., latency, security, and battery-life) continue to arise. As a result, how to find corresponding measurements to mitigate unsatisfactory influences becomes the focus. Mobile edge computing (MEC) as a distributed computing paradigm offloads computation-intensive tasks to the edge of the network. It brings the resources as close as possible to the end devices, addressing the shortcomings mentioned above. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive survey of the MEC-based Metaverse. Particular emphasis is given to the technologies convergence, architectures, and application scenarios, e.g., BoundlessXR and CloudXR. Significantly, we introduce the potential future directions for developing Metaverse systems.

Crossed modules, non-abelian extensions of associative conformal algebras and Wells exact sequences

In this paper, we introduce the notions of crossed module of associative conformal algebras, 2-term strongly homotopy associative conformal algebras, and discuss the relationship between them and the 3-th Hochschild cohomology of associative conformal algebras. We classify the non-abelian extensions by introducing the non-abelian cohomology. We show that non-abelian extensions of an associative conformal algebra can be viewed as Maurer-Cartan elements of a suitable differential graded Lie algebra, and prove that the Deligne groupoid of this differential graded Lie algebra corresponds one to one with the non-abelian cohomology. Based on this classification, we study the inducibility of a pair of automorphisms about a non-abelian extension of associative conformal algebras, and give the fundamental sequence of Wells in the context of associative conformal algebras. Finally, we consider the extensibility of a pair of derivations about an abelian extension of associative conformal algebras, and give an exact sequence of Wells type.

Gerstenhaber algebra of an associative conformal algebra

We define a cup product on the Hochschild cohomology of an associative conformal algebra $A$, and show the cup product is graded commutative. We define a graded Lie bracket with the degree $-1$ on the Hochschild cohomology $\HH^{\ast}(A)$ of an associative conformal algebra $A$, and show that the Lie bracket together with the cup product is a Gerstenhaber algebra on the Hochschild cohomology of an associative conformal algebra. Moreover, we consider the Hochschild cohomology of split extension conformal algebra $A\hat{\oplus}M$ of $A$ with a conformal bimodule $M$, and show that there exist an algebra homomorphism from $\HH^{\ast}(A\hat{\oplus}M)$ to $\HH^{\ast}(A)$.

Stripe order and spin dynamics in triangular-lattice antiferromagnet KErSe$_{2}$: A single-crystal study with a theoretical description

The rare-earth triangular-lattice chalcogenide is a great platform for exploring both spin liquids and novel magnetic orders with anisotropic spin interactions and magnetic frustrations. Here, we report the thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements of rare-earth triangular-lattice chalcogenide KErSe$_{2}$, using single-crystal samples. Our experiments revealed a long-range stripe order below 0.2 K. Although the magnetic order was three-dimensional, magnetic excitations exhibited negligible modulation along the z direction, indicating very weak interlayer coupling. Furthermore, magnetic excitation developed a well-defined spin-wave dispersion with a gap of $\sim$0.03 meV at M points. Both the stripe order and spin-wave excitations could be quantitatively understood from the anisotropic spin interactions of the Er$^{3+}$ Kramers doublets.

Generating Hierarchical Explanations on Text Classification Without Connecting Rules

The opaqueness of deep NLP models has motivated the development of methods for interpreting how deep models predict. Recently, work has introduced hierarchical attribution, which produces a hierarchical clustering of words, along with an attribution score for each cluster. However, existing work on hierarchical attribution all follows the connecting rule, limiting the cluster to a continuous span in the input text. We argue that the connecting rule as an additional prior may undermine the ability to reflect the model decision process faithfully. To this end, we propose to generate hierarchical explanations without the connecting rule and introduce a framework for generating hierarchical clusters. Experimental results and further analysis show the effectiveness of the proposed method in providing high-quality explanations for reflecting model predicting process.

Answering Numerical Reasoning Questions in Table-Text Hybrid Contents with Graph-based Encoder and Tree-based Decoder

In the real-world question answering scenarios, hybrid form combining both tabular and textual contents has attracted more and more attention, among which numerical reasoning problem is one of the most typical and challenging problems. Existing methods usually adopt encoder-decoder framework to represent hybrid contents and generate answers. However, it can not capture the rich relationship among numerical value, table schema, and text information on the encoder side. The decoder uses a simple predefined operator classifier which is not flexible enough to handle numerical reasoning processes with diverse expressions. To address these problems, this paper proposes a \textbf{Re}lational \textbf{G}raph enhanced \textbf{H}ybrid table-text \textbf{N}umerical reasoning model with \textbf{T}ree decoder (\textbf{RegHNT}). It models the numerical question answering over table-text hybrid contents as an expression tree generation task. Moreover, we propose a novel relational graph modeling method, which models alignment between questions, tables, and paragraphs. We validated our model on the publicly available table-text hybrid QA benchmark (TAT-QA). The proposed RegHNT significantly outperform the baseline model and achieve state-of-the-art results. We openly released the source code and data at https://github.com/lfy79001/RegHNT (2022-05-05).

ReasonChainQA: Text-based Complex Question Answering with Explainable Evidence Chains

The ability of reasoning over evidence has received increasing attention in question answering (QA). Recently, natural language database (NLDB) conducts complex QA in knowledge base with textual evidences rather than structured representations, this task attracts a lot of attention because of the flexibility and richness of textual evidence. However, existing text-based complex question answering datasets fail to provide explicit reasoning process, while it's important for retrieval effectiveness and reasoning interpretability. Therefore, we present a benchmark \textbf{ReasonChainQA} with explanatory and explicit evidence chains. ReasonChainQA consists of two subtasks: answer generation and evidence chains extraction, it also contains higher diversity for multi-hop questions with varying depths, 12 reasoning types and 78 relations. To obtain high-quality textual evidences for answering complex question. Additional experiment on supervised and unsupervised retrieval fully indicates the significance of ReasonChainQA. Dataset and codes will be made publicly available upon accepted.

Edge-Cloud Cooperation for DNN Inference via Reinforcement Learning and Supervised Learning

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have been widely applied in Internet of Things (IoT) systems for various tasks such as image classification and object detection. However, heavyweight DNN models can hardly be deployed on edge devices due to limited computational resources. In this paper, an edge-cloud cooperation framework is proposed to improve inference accuracy while maintaining low inference latency. To this end, we deploy a lightweight model on the edge and a heavyweight model on the cloud. A reinforcement learning (RL)-based DNN compression approach is used to generate the lightweight model suitable for the edge from the heavyweight model. Moreover, a supervised learning (SL)-based offloading strategy is applied to determine whether the sample should be processed on the edge or on the cloud. Our method is implemented on real hardware and tested on multiple datasets. The experimental results show that (1) The sizes of the lightweight models obtained by RL-based DNN compression are up to 87.6% smaller than those obtained by the baseline method; (2) SL-based offloading strategy makes correct offloading decisions in most cases; (3) Our method reduces up to 78.8% inference latency and achieves higher accuracy compared with the cloud-only strategy.

Time Minimization in Hierarchical Federated Learning

Federated Learning is a modern decentralized machine learning technique where user equipments perform machine learning tasks locally and then upload the model parameters to a central server. In this paper, we consider a 3-layer hierarchical federated learning system which involves model parameter exchanges between the cloud and edge servers, and the edge servers and user equipment. In a hierarchical federated learning model, delay in communication and computation of model parameters has a great impact on achieving a predefined global model accuracy. Therefore, we formulate a joint learning and communication optimization problem to minimize total model parameter communication and computation delay, by optimizing local iteration counts and edge iteration counts. To solve the problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed. After that, a time-minimized UE-to-edge association algorithm is presented where the maximum latency of the system is reduced. Simulation results show that the global model converges faster under optimal edge server and local iteration counts. The hierarchical federated learning latency is minimized with the proposed UE-to-edge association strategy.
