Chaotic new inflation and formation of primordial black holes

It is shown that in a number of scalar potentials with an unstable local maximum at the origin chaotic inflation is followed by new inflation if model parameters are appropriately chosen. In this model density fluctuation can have a large-amplitude peak on the comoving Hubble scale at the onset of the slow-roll new inflation and can result in formation of appreciable amount of primordial black holes on astrophysically interesting mass scales.

Cosmological constraints on primordial black holes produced in the near-critical gravitational collapse

The mass function of primordial black holes created through the near-critical gravitational collapse is calculated in a manner fairly independent of the statistical distribution of underlying density fluctuation, assuming that it has a sharp peak on a specific scale. Comparing it with various cosmological constraints on their mass spectrum, some newly excluded range is found in the volume fraction of the region collapsing into black holes as a function of the horizon mass.

Imprints of the Metrically-coupled Dilaton on Density Perturbations in Inflationary Cosmology

Spectra of density perturbations produced during chaotic inflation are calculated, taking both adiabatic and isocurvature modes into account in a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity in which the dilaton is metrically coupled. Comparing the predicted spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies with the one observed by the COBE-DMR we calculate constraints on the parameters of these theories, which turn out to be stronger by an order-of-magnitude than those obtained from post-Newtonian experiments.

Probability Distribution Function of the Coarse-grained Scalar Field at Finite Temperature

We present a formalism to calculate the probability distribution function of a scalar field coarse-grained over some spatial scales with a Gaussian filter at finite temperature. As an application, we investigate the role of subcritical fluctuations in the electroweak phase transition in the minimal standard model. It is concluded that the universe was in a mixed state of true and false vacua already at the critical temperature.

Sample variance of the cosmic velocity field

Since the cosmic peculiar velocity field depends on small wave-number modes strongly, we cannot probe its universal properties unless we observe a sufficiently large region. We calculate the expected deviation (sample variance) of the peculiar velocity dispersion from its universal value in the case observed volume is finite. Using linear theory we show that the sample variance remains as large as $\sim 10%$, even if the observed region is as deep as $100h^{-1}Mpc$ and that it seriously affects the estimation of cosmological parameters from the peculiar velocity field.

On the Jeans Instability During the QCD Phase Transition

The Jeans scale is estimated during the coexistence epoch of quark-gluon and hadron phases in the first-order QCD phase transition. It is shown that, contrary to the previous claims, reduction of the sound speed is so little that the phase transition does not affect evolution of cosmological density fluctuations appreciably.

Numerical approach to the onset of the electroweak phase transition

We investigate whether the universe was homogeneously in the false vacuum state at the critical temperature of a weakly first-order phase transition such as the electroweak phase transition in terms of a series of numerical simulations of a phenomenological Langevin equation, whose noise term is derived from the effective action but the dissipative term is set so that the fluctuation-dissipation relation is met. The correlation function of the noise terms given by a non-equilibrium field theory has a distinct feature if it originates from interactions with a boson or with a fermion. The spatial correlation function of noises from a massless boson damps with a power-law, while the fermionic noises always damp exponentially above the inverse-temperature scale. In the simulation with one-loop effective potential of the Higgs field, the latter turns out to be more effective to disturb the homogeneous field configuration. Since noises of the both types are present in the electroweak phase transition, our results suggest that conventional picture of a phase transition, namely, nucleation of critical bubbles in a homogeneous background does not apply or the one-loop approximation breaks down in the standard model.

Evolution of the Pairwise Peculiar Velocity Distribution Function in Lagrangian Perturbation Theory

The statistical distribution of the radial pairwise peculiar velocity of galaxies is known to have an exponential form as implied by observations and explicitly shown in N-body simulations. Here we calculate its statistical distribution function using the Zel'dovich approximation assuming that the primordial density fluctuations are Gaussian distributed. We show that the exponential distribution is realized as a transient phenomena on megaparsec scales in the standard cold-dark-matter model.

Nonlinear Evolution of the Genus Statistics with Zel'dovich Approximation

Evolution of genus density is calculated from Gaussian initial conditions using Zel'dovich approximation. A new approach is introduced which formulates the desired quantity in a rotationally invariant manner. It is shown that normalized genus density does not depend on the initial spectral shape but is a function of the fluctuation amplitude only.

Are nontopological strings produced at the electroweak phase transition?

We formulate a local condition for a nontopological defect to be present. We apply it for electroweak strings and estimate the probability of their existence at the Ginzburg temperature. As a result we find strings long enough to serve for baryon-number generation are unlikely to be produced.

Genus Statistics of the Large-Scale Structure with Non-Gaussian Density Fields

As a statistical measure to quantify the topological structure of the large-scale structure in the universe, the genus number is calculated for a number of non-Gaussian distributions in which the density field is characterized by a nontrivial function of some Gaussian-distributed random numbers. As a specific example, the formulae for the lognormal and the chi-square distributions are derived and compared with the results of $N$-body simulations together with the previously known formulae for the Gaussian distribution and second-order perturbation theory. It is shown that the lognormal formula fits most of the simulation data the best.

Formation of MACHO-Primordial Black Holes in Inflationary Cosmology

As a nonbaryonic explanation of massive compact halo objects, a phenomenological model is presented which predicts formation of primordial black holes at a desired mass scale. The required feature of initial density fluctuation is realized making use of the primordially isocurvature fluctuation generated in an inflationary universe model with multiple scalar fields.

Density Fluctuations in Inflationary Models with Multiple Scalar Fields

Making use of the primordially isocurvature fluctuations, which are generated in inflationary models with multiple scalar fields, we make a phenomenological model that predicts formation of primordial black holes which can account for the massive compact halo objects recently observed.

Dynamics of Subcritical Bubbles in First Order Phase Transition

We derivate the Langevin and the Fokker-Planck equations for the radius of $O(3)$-symmetric subcritical bubbles as a phenomenological model to treat thermal fluctuation. The effect of thermal noise on subcritical bubbles is examined. We find that the fluctuation-dissipation relation holds and that in the high temperature phase the system settles down rapidly to the thermal equilibrium state even if it was in a nonequilibrium state initially. We then estimate the typical size of subcritical bubbles as well as the amplitude of fluctuations on that scale. We also discuss their implication to the electroweak phase transition.

Density fluctuations in Brans-Dicke inflation

Spectrum of density perturbations in the Universe generated from quantum-gravitational fluctuations in slow-roll-over inflationary scenarios with the Brans-Dicke gravity is calculated. It is shown that after inflation the isocurvature mode of perturbations may be neglected as compared to the adiabatic mode, and that an amplitude of the latter mode is not significantly different from that in the Einstein gravity. However, the account of the isocurvature mode is necessary to obtain the quantitatively correct spectrum of adiabatic perturbations.

Thermal fluctuations in electroweak phase transition

We estimate the amplitude of thermal fluctuations by calculating the typical size of subcritical bubbles in cosmological electroweak phase transition and show that this thermal fluctuation effect drastically changes dynamics of the phase transition from the ordinary first order type with supercooling. From this fact, we conclude that the standard electroweak baryogenesis scenario associated with such a first order transition does not work in the minimal standard model in certain conditions.

Counts-in-cells analysis of the statistical distribution in an N-body simulated universe

Evolution of the statistical distribution of density field is investigated by means of a counts-in-cells method in a low-density cold-dark-matter simulated universe. Four theoretical distributions, i.e. the negative binomial distribution, the lognormal distribution, the Edgeworth series and the skewed lognormal distribution, are tested to fit the calculated distribution function, and it is shown that only the skewed lognormal distribution of second and third order can describe the evolution of the statistical distribution perfectly well from the initially Gaussian regime to the present stage. The effects of sparse sampling is also investigated and it is discussed that one should use a sample with number density of galaxies larger than $\sim 0.01h^3$Mpc$^{-3}$ in order to recover underlying density distribution.

Equilibrium State of a Massless Self-Interacting Scalar Field in the De Sitter Background

Behaviour of a weekly self-interacting scalar field with a small mass in the de Sitter background is investigated using the stochastic approach (including the case of a double-well interaction potential). Existence of the de Sitter invariant equilibrium quantum state of the scalar field in the presence of interaction is shown for any sign of the mass term. The stochastic approach is further developed to produce a method of calculation of an arbitrary anomalously large correlation function of the scalar field in the de Sitter background, and expressions for the two-point correlation function in the equilibrium state, correlation time and spatial physical correlation radius are presented. The latter does not depend on time that implies that the characteristic size of domains with positive and negative values of the scalar field remains the same on average in the equilibrium state in spite of the expansion of the $t=const$ hypersurface of the de Sitter space-time.
