Curvature perturbation at the local extremum of the inflaton's potential

The spectrum of curvature perturbation generated during inflation is studied in the case the inflation-driving scalar field (inflaton) $ϕ$ crosses over its potential extremum. It is shown that the nondecaying mode of perturbation has a finite value and a proper formula is given. The result is also extended to more general cases where $\ddotϕ$ is non-negligible.

Cosmic Inversion: Reconstructing primordial spectrum from CMB anisotropy

We investigate the possibility of reconstructing the initial spectrum of density fluctuations from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. As a first step toward this program, we consider a spatially flat, CDM dominated universe. In this case, it is shown that, with a good accuracy, the initial spectrum satisfies a first order differential equation with the source determined by the CMB angular correlation function. The equation is found to contain singularities arising from zeros of the acoustic oscillations in the transfer functions. Nevertheless, we find these singularities are not fatal, and the equation can be solved nicely. We test our method by considering simple analytic forms for the transfer functions. We find the initial spectrum is reproduced within 5% accuracy even for a spectrum that has a sharp spike.

A cosmological constant from degenerate vacua

Under the hypothesis that the cosmological constant vanishes in the true ground state with lowest possible energy density, we argue that the observed small but finite vacuum-like energy density can be explained if we consider a theory with two or more degenerate perturbative vacua, which are unstable due to quantum tunneling, and if we still live in one of such states. An example is given making use of the topological vacua in non-Abelian gauge theories.

Cosmological perturbations from multi-field inflation in generalized Einstein theories

We study cosmological perturbations generated from quantum fluctuations in multi-field inflationary scenarios in generalized Einstein theories, taking both adiabatic and isocurvature modes into account. In the slow-roll approximation, explicit closed-form long-wave solutions for field and metric perturbations are obtained by the analysis in the Einstein frame. Since the evolution of fluctuations depends on specific gravity theories, we make detailed investigations based on analytic and numerical approaches in four generalized Einstein theories: the Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) theory, the Einstein gravity with a non-minimally coupled scalar field, the higher-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory, and the $R+R^2$ theory with a non-minimally coupled scalar field. We find that solutions obtained in the slow-roll approximation show good agreement with full numerical results except around the end of inflation. Due to the presence of isocurvature perturbations, the gravitational potential $Φ$ and the curvature perturbations ${\cal R}$ and $ζ$ do not remain constant on super-horizon scales. In particular, we find that negative non-minimal coupling can lead to strong enhancement of ${\cal R}$ in both the Einstein and higher derivative gravity, in which case it is difficult to unambiguously decompose scalar perturbations into adiabatic and isocurvature modes during the whole stage of inflation.

After bulky brane inflation

Reheating or entropy production on the three-brane from a decaying bulk scalar field is studied in the brane-world picture of the Universe. It is shown that a significant amount of dark radiation is produced in this process unless only the specific modes are excited, so that subsequent entropy production within the brane is required in general before primordial nucleosynthesis.

New inflation in supergravity with a chaotic initial condition

We propose a self-consistent scenario of new inflation in supergravity. Chaotic inflation first takes place around the Planck scale, which solves the longevity problem, namely, why the universe can live much beyond the Planck time, and also gives an adequate initial condition for new inflation. Then, new inflation lasts long enough to generate primordial fluctuations for the large scale structure, which generally has a tilted spectrum with the spectral index $n_{s} < 1$. The successive decay of the inflaton leads to the reheating temperature low enough to avoid the overproduction of gravitinos in a wide range of the gravitino mass.

Inflation and the dwarf galaxy problem

Cosmological N-body simulations with scale-invariant initial perturbations show too many virialized objects of dwarf-galaxy masses in a typical galactic halo in contradiction to observation and stability of galactic discs. We present a model of double hybrid inflation which predicts density fluctuations with a small-scale cutoff to account for the absence of these objects in observations.

Evolution of a global string network in a matter dominated universe

We evolve the network of global strings in the matter-dominated universe by means of numerical simulations. The existence of the scaling solution is confirmed as in the radiation-dominated universe but the scaling parameter $ξ$ takes a slightly smaller value, $ξ\simeq 0.6 \pm 0.1$, which is defined as $ξ= ρ_{s} t^{2} / μ$ with $ρ_{s}$ the energy density of global strings and $μ$ the string tension per unit length. The change of $ξ$ from the radiation to the matter-dominated universe is consistent with that obtained by Albrecht and Turok by use of the one-scale model. We also study the loop distribution function and find that it can be well fitted with that predicted by the one-scale model, where the number density $n_{l}(t)$ of the loop with the length $l$ is given by $n_{l}(t) = ν/[t^2 (l + κt)^2]$ with $ν\sim 0.040$ and $κ\sim 0.48$. Thus, the evolution of the global string network in the matter-dominated universe can be well described by the one-scale model as in the radiation-dominated universe.

What happens when the inflaton stops during inflation

The spectrum of adiabatic density perturbation generated during inflation is studied in the case the time derivative of an inflation-driving scalar field (inflaton) vanishes at some time during inflation. It is shown that the nondecaying mode of perturbation has a finite value even in this case and that its amplitude is given by the standard formula with the time derivation of the scalar field replaced by the potential gradient using the slow-roll equation.

Primordial Black Holes and Primordial Nucleosynthesis I: Effects of Hadron Injection from Low Mass Holes

We investigate the influence of hadron injection from evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early stage of the primordial nucleosynthesis era (t = 10^{-3} - 10^4 sec). The emitted quark-antiquark pairs or gluons immediately fragment into a lot of hadrons and scatter off the thermal plasma which is constituted by photons, electrons and nucleons. For the relatively low mass holes we point out that the dominant effect is the inter-conversion between ambient proton and neutron through the strong interaction induced by the emitted hadrons. Even after the freeze-out time of the week interactions between neutron and proton, more neutrons are produced and the synthesized light element abundances could be drastically changed. Comparing the theoretical predictions with the observational data, we constrain the PBH's density and their lifetime. We obtain the upper bound for PBH's initial mass fraction, β< 10^{-20} for 10^8 g < M < 10^{10} g, and β< 10^{-22} for 10^{10} g < M < 3 * 10^{10} g.

Evolution of Axionic Strings and Spectrum of Axions Radiated from Them

Cosmological evolution of axionic strings is investigated by numerically solving field equations of a complex scalar field in 3+1 dimensions. It is shown that the global strings relax to the scaling solution with a significantly smaller number density than the case of local strings. The power spectrum of axions radiated from them is calculated from the simulation data, which is found to be highly peaked around the Hubble scale, and a more accurate constraint on the Peccei-Quinn breaking scale is obtained.

Topological inflation induced by a non-minimally coupled massive scalar field

We reanalyze cosmology of a non-minimally coupled massive scalar field which was originally discussed by Futamase and Maeda in the context of chaotic inflation scenario. We find a new type of inflationary solution where inflation occurs inside a domain wall. This new solution relaxes constraints on the coupling constant for successful inflation.

Topological $R^4$ Inflation

We consider the possibility that higher-curvature corrections could drive inflation after the compactification to four dimensions. Assuming that the low-energy limit of the fundamental theory is eleven-dimensional supergravity to the lowest order, including curvature corrections and taking the descent from eleven dimensions to four via an intermediate five-dimensional theory, as favored by recent considerations of unification at some scale around $\sim 10^{16}$ GeV, we may obtain a simple model of inflation in four dimensions. The effective degrees of freedom are two scalar fields and the metric. The scalars arise as the large five-dimensional modulus and the self-interacting conformal mode of the metric. The effective potential has a local maximum in addition to the more usual minimum. However, the potential is quite flat at the top, and admits topological inflation. We show that the model can resolve cosmological problems and provide a mechanism for structure formation with very little fine tuning.

Monopole Inflation in Brans-Dicke Theory

According to previous work, topological defects expand exponentially without an end if the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field is of the order of the Planck mass. We extend the study of inflating topological defects to the Brans-Dicke gravity. With the help of numerical simulation we investigate the dynamics and spacetime structure of a global monopole. Contrary to the case of the Einstein gravity, any inflating monopole eventually shrinks and takes a stable configuration. We also discuss cosmological constraints on the model parameters.

Sample Variance of the Higher-Order Cumulants of Cosmic Density and Velocity Fields

If primordial fluctuation is Gaussian distributed, higher-order cumulants of the cosmic fields reflect nonlinear mode coupling and provide useful information of gravitational instability picture of structure formation. We show that their expected deviation (sample variance) from the universal values is nonvanishing even in linear theory in the case where observed volume is finite. As a result, we find that the relative sample variance of the skewness of the smoothed velocity divergence field remains as large as $\sim 30%$ even if the survey depth is as deep as $\sim 150h^{1}Mpc$.

Effect of Void Network on CMB Anisotropy

We study the effect of a void network on the CMB anisotropy in the Einstein-de Sitter background using Thompson &Vishniac's model. We consider comprehensively the Sacks-Wolfe effect, the Rees-Sciama effect and the gravitational lensing effect. Our analysis includes the model of primordial voids existing at recombination, which is realized in some inflationary models associated with a first-order phase transition. If there exist primordial voids whose comoving radius is larger than $\sim10h^{-1}$Mpc at recombination, not only the Sachs-Wolfe effect but also the Rees-Sciama effect is appreciable even for multipoles $l\lsim1000$ of the anisotropy spectrum. The gravitational lensing effect, on the other hand, slightly smoothes the primary anisotropy; quantitatively, our results for the void model are similar to the previous results for a CDM model. All the effects, together, would give some constraints on the configuration or origin of voids with high-resolution data of the CMB anisotropy.

Numerical analysis of formation and evolution of global strings in 2+1 dimensions

We simulate the formation and the evolution of global strings taking into account the expansion of the universe and the concomitant change of the effective potential, that is, the change from the restoration stage of the global {\it U}(1)-symmetry to the broken stage. Starting from the thermal equilibrium state, we run simulations for 100 sets of different initial conditions in 2+1 dimensions. As a result, we find deviation from scale invariance. This is because the energy loss mechanism is pair annihilation rather than intercommutation, so that a string and an anti-string attract each other under a logarithmic potential.
