Hecke curves and Hitchin discriminant

Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 4$ over the complex numbers and ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ with a fixed determinant of degree $d$. In the projectivized cotangent space at a general point $E$ of ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$, there exists a distinguished hypersurface ${\cal S}_E$ consisting of cotangent vectors with singular spectral curves. In the projectivized tangent space at $E$, there exists a distinguished subvariety ${\cal C}_E$ consisting of vectors tangent to Hecke curves in ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$ through $E$. Our main result establishes that the hypersurface ${\cal S}_E$ and the variety ${\cal C}_E$ are dual to each other. As an application of this duality relation, we prove that any surjective morphism ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d) \to {\cal SU}^s_{C'}(r,d)$, where $C'$ is another curve of genus $g$, is biregular. This confirms, for ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$, the general expectation that a Fano variety of Picard number 1, excepting the projective space, has no non-trivial self-morphism and that morphisms between Fano varieties of Picard number 1 are rare. The duality relation also gives simple proofs of the non-abelian Torelli theorem and the result of Kouvidakis-Pantev on the automorphisms of ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$.

Characterization of Hermitian symmetric spaces by fundamental forms

We show that an equivariantly embedded Hermitian symmetric space in a projective space, which contains neither a projective space nor a hyperquadric as a component, is characterized by their fundamental forms as a local submanifold of the projective space. Using some invariant-theoretic properties of the fundamental forms and Se-ashi's work on linear differential equations of finite type, we reduce the proof to the vanishing of certain Spencer cohomology groups. The vanishing is checked by Kostant's harmonic theory for Lie algebra cohomology.

Birationality of the tangent map for minimal rational curves

For a uniruled projective manifold, we prove that a general rational curve of minimal degree through a general point is uniquely determined by its tangent vector. As applications, among other things we give a new proof, using no Lie theory, of our earlier result that a holomorphic map from a rational homogeneous space of Picard number 1 onto a projective manifold different from the projective space must be a biholomorphic map.

Rigidity of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of the compact type under K"ahler deformation

We study deformations of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces $S$ of the compact type, known to be locally rigid, as projective-algberaic manifolds and prove that no jump of complex structures can occur. For each $S$ of rank $\ge 2$ there is an associated reductive linear group $G$ such that $S$ admits a holomorphic $G$-structure, corresponding to a reduction of the structure group of the tangent bundle. $S$ is characterized as the unique simply-connected compact complex manifold admitting such a $G$-structure which is at the same time integrable. To prove the deformation rigidity of $S$ it suffices that the corresponding integrable $G$-structures converge. We argue by contradiction using the deformation theory of rational curves. Assuming that a jump of complex structures occurs, cones of vectors tangent to degree-1 rational curves on the special fiber $X_0$ are linearly degenerate, thus defining a proper meromorphic distribution $W$ on $X_0$. We prove that such $W$ cannot possibly exist. On the one hand, integrability of $W$ would contradict the fact that $b_2(X)=1$. On the other hand, we prove that $W$ would be automatically integrable by producing families of integral complex surfaces of $W$ as pencils of degree-1 rational curves. For the verification that there are enough integral surfaces we need a description of generic cones on the special fiber. We show that they are in fact images of standard cones under linear projections. We achieve this by studying deformations of normalizations of Chow spaces of minimal rational curves marked at a point, which are themselves Hermitian symmetric, irreducible except in the case of Grassmannians.
