New approach to the resummation of logarithms in Higgs-boson decays to a vector quarkonium plus a photon

We present a calculation of the rates for Higgs-boson decays to a vector heavy-quarkonium state plus a photon, where the heavy quarkonium states are the J/psi and the Upsilon(nS) states, with n=1, 2, or 3. The calculation is carried out in the light-cone formalism, combined with nonrelativistic QCD factorization, and is accurate at leading order in m_Q^2/m_H^2, where m_Q is the heavy-quark mass and m_H is the Higgs-boson mass. The calculation contains corrections through next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant alpha_s and the square of the heavy-quark velocity v, and includes a resummation of logarithms of m_H^2/m_Q^2 at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We have developed a new method, which makes use of Abel summation, accelerated through the use of Pade approximants, to deal with divergences in the resummed expressions for the quarkonium light-cone distribution amplitudes. This approach allows us to make definitive calculations of the resummation effects. Contributions from the order-alpha_s and order-v^2 corrections to the light-cone distribution amplitudes that we obtain with this new method differ substantially from the corresponding contributions that one obtains from a model light-cone distribution amplitude [M. Koenig and M. Neubert, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2015) 012]. Our results for the real parts of the direct-process amplitudes are considerably smaller than those from one earlier calculation [G. T. Bodwin, H. S. Chung, J.-H. Ee, J. Lee, and F. Petriello, Phys. Rev. D 90, 113010 (2014)], reducing the sensitivity to the Higgs-boson--heavy-quark couplings, and are somewhat smaller than those from another earlier calculation [M. Koenig and M. Neubert, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2015) 012]. However, our results for the standard-model Higgs-boson branching fractions are in good agreement with those in M. Koenig and M. Neubert, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2015) 012.

Magic mass ratios of complete energy-momentum transfer in one-dimensional elastic three-body collisions

We consider the one-dimensional scattering of two identical blocks of mass $M$ that exchange energy and momentum via elastic collisions with an intermediary ball of mass $m=αM$. Initially, one block is incident upon the ball with the other block at rest. For $α<1$, the three objects will make multiple collisions with one another. In our analysis, we construct a Euclidean vector $\textbf{V}_n$ whose components are proportional to the velocities of the objects. Energy-momentum conservation then requires a covariant recurrence relation for $\textbf{V}_n$ that transforms like a pure rotation in three dimensions. The analytic solutions of the terminal velocities result in a remarkable prediction for values of $α$, in cases where the initial energy and momentum of the incident block are completely transferred to the scattered block. We call these values for $α$ "magic mass ratios."

Combinatorics in tensor integral reduction

We illustrate a rigorous approach to express the totally symmetric isotropic tensors of arbitrary rank in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space as a linear combination of products of Kronecker deltas. By making full use of the symmetries, one can greatly reduce the efforts to compute cumbersome angular integrals into straightforward combinatoric counts. This method is generalized into the cases in which such symmetries are present in subspaces. We further demonstrate the mechanism of the tensor-integral reduction that is widely used in various physics problems such as perturbative calculations of the gauge-field theory in which divergent integrals are regularized in $d=4-2ε$ space-time dimensions. The main derivation is given in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. The generalization of the result to the Minkowski space is also discussed in order to provide graduate students and researchers with techniques of tensor-integral reduction for particle physics problems.

Relativistic corrections to Higgs boson decays to quarkonia

We improve the theoretical predictions for the decays of the Higgs boson to an $S$-wave vector quarkonium plus a photon by calculating the relativistic correction of order $v^2$, where $v$ is the heavy-quark velocity in the quarkonium rest frame. Our numerical results are given for the $J/ψ$ and $Υ(nS)$ channels, with $n=1,2,3$. The numerical results include a previously calculated correction of order $α_s$ and summations, to all orders in $α_s$, of leading logarithms of $m_H^2/m_Q^2$, where $m_H$ is the Higgs-boson mass and $m_Q$ is the heavy-quark mass. These QCD corrections apply to the contribution of leading order in $v$ and to part of the order-$v^2$ correction. For the remainder of the order-$v^2$ correction, we sum leading logarithms of $m_H/m_Q$ through order $α_s^2$. These refinements reduce the theoretical uncertainties in the direct-production amplitudes for $H \to J/ψ+γ$ and $H \to Υ(1S)+γ$ by approximately a factor of 3 and open the door to improved determinations at the LHC of the Higgs-boson Yukawa couplings to the charm and bottom quarks.

A unique pure mechanical system revealing dipole repulsion

We study multiple elastic collisions of a block and a ball against a rigid wall in one dimension. The complete trajectory of the block is solved as an analytic function of time. Near the turning point of the block the force carried by the ball is proportional to 1/x^3, where x is the distance between the wall and the block, in the limit that the block is sufficiently heavier than the ball. This is a unique pure mechanical system that reveals dipole-like repulsion.
