Quark spin-orbit correlations in spin-1 targets

The quark spin-orbit correlation probes the alignment of quark helicity with longitudinal kinetic orbital angular momentum inside a hadron. This correlation is defined by a QCD operator: the position moment of the asymmetric parity-odd quark energy-momentum tensor. The matrix element of this rank-two tensor decomposes into symmetric-traceless, antisymmetric, and trace parts. The symmetric-traceless part is matched to moments of axial generalized parton distributions. The QCD equations of motion relate the antisymmetric part to vector and tensor form factors and set the trace to zero. Using these relations, we derive two gauge-invariant sum rules for the spin-orbit correlation in a spin-$1$ hadron. One gives the correlation in an unpolarized target. The other gives its tensor-polarization dependence, which is absent for spin-$0$ and spin-$1/2$ targets. We estimate the unpolarized spin-orbit correlations for the $\rho$ meson and deuteron using existing lattice and phenomenological inputs, respectively.

Transverse distributions of the energy-momentum tensor for a spin-$3/2$ baryon

We develop a multipole description of transverse distributions of the energy-momentum tensor for a spin-$3/2$ baryon in frames connected by a longitudinal boost. In the transverse Breit frame, the $T^{00}$, $T^{03}$, and $T^{33}$ matrix elements are expressed through seven multipole form factors for energy, angular momentum, and stress. At finite longitudinal momentum, we factorize the Lorentz mixing of these three components from the spin-$3/2$ Wigner rotations of the external states. The resulting elastic-frame matrix elements contain six transverse multipoles, whose Fourier transforms define the distributions of energy, longitudinal momentum, and longitudinal momentum flux. We also calculate $T^{++}$, $T^{+-}$, and $T^{--}$ directly with light-front Rarita-Schwinger spinors. The elastic-frame construction provides a continuous interpolation from the transverse Breit frame to the infinite-momentum frame. In this limit, the Wigner rotation becomes the Melosh rotation, and the leading elastic-frame matrix elements reproduce the corresponding light-front results. Using the $\Delta$-baryon gravitational form factors obtained in the Skyrme model as a representative numerical input, we find that the energy distribution is dominated by the energy monopole defined in the transverse Breit frame and changes only weakly under longitudinal boosts. Through boost mixing, this monopole provides the dominant contribution to the longitudinal momentum distribution and its flux at finite $P_z$. For a longitudinally polarized spin-$3/2$ target, the distributions contain only the monopole contributions, whereas those of a transversely polarized target exhibit spin-dependent quadrupole and octupole deformations and a dipole that shifts their maxima.

Multipole structure of the $N \to \Delta$ Transition Generalized Parton Distributions

We establish the multipole structure of the $N \to \Delta$ transition at the level of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We decompose the four transition GPDs into one monopole, two dipole, and one quadrupole components in the transverse plane by a multipole expansion of the covariant transition matrix element in terms of the three-dimensional spin-transition tensors and the transverse momentum transfer. These multipole components are in one-to-one correspondence with the light-front helicity amplitudes. In the zero-skewness limit, the multipole GPDs define impact-parameter transition densities, which generalize the transverse transition charge densities to the $x$-dependent level. These transition densities arise from non-diagonal matrix elements between two distinct hadronic states and must therefore be distinguished from the diagonal densities of the nucleon and the $\Delta$. The multipole transition densities visualize the monopole, dipole, and quadrupole structures of the partonic $N \to \Delta$ transition in the transverse plane.

Flavor decomposition of the gravitational form factors and mechanical structure of the proton

We review in the present talk a series of recent works on the flavor decomposition of the gravitational form factors of the proton and its mechanical properties within the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. Starting from the energy-momentum tensor operator derived from the QCD instanton vacuum, we carry out the twist projection of the energy-momentum tensor operator into its twist-2 and twist-4 components, which enables us to isolate the $\overline{c}$ form factor originating from the twist-4 operator. We present the flavor-decomposed mass, spin, pressure, and shear-force distributions of the proton, together with the corresponding form factors. While the up quark dominates both the mass and the spin of the proton, the strange quark is found to contribute sizably to the $D$-term form factor. We also discuss the mechanical stability of the proton governed by the pressure and shear-force distributions.

Multipole structure of the nucleon tensor form factors

We investigate the multipole structure of the nucleon tensor form factors within the chiral quark-soliton model based on the $1/N_c$ expansion. Extending the previous leading-order analysis~\cite{Ghim:2025gqo}, we include the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections. These corrections provide the leading nonvanishing contributions to the flavor components that are absent at leading order, thereby completing the flavor decomposition of the tensor multipole form factors at the present order. We numerically evaluate the isoscalar tensor charge, the isovector anomalous tensor magnetic moment, and the isoscalar tensor quadrupole moment, obtaining $g_T^{u+d}=0.81$, $\kappa_T^{u-d}=1.97$, and $E_T^{u+d}(0)=5.98$, respectively. The isoscalar tensor charge and quadrupole moment are mainly governed by the valence-quark contribution, whereas the isovector anomalous tensor magnetic moment receives a sizable Dirac-sea contribution. We also examine the momentum-transfer dependence of the corresponding form factors. They decrease monotonically with increasing $-t$. In particular, the isovector anomalous tensor magnetic form factor shows a pronounced falloff in the small-$|t|$ region, reflecting the importance of the Dirac sea in the tensor dipole structure.

Quark orbital angular momentum as a chiral magnetic effect

The flavor-nonsinglet ($u - d$) quark angular momentum (AM) in the proton is computed based on the effective spin-flavor dynamics emerging from chiral symmetry breaking by QCD instantons. The QCD AM operators are converted to effective spin-flavor operators expressing instanton-induced chiral interactions. A large negative orbital AM $L_{u - d}$ arises as a ``chiral magnetic effect'' of the interaction of the quarks with the chiral mean field in the proton in the large-$N_c$ limit. It cancels part of the large positive spin AM $S_{u-d}$ and reduces the total AM $J_{u-d} = L_{u-d} + S_{u-d}$, in agreement with lattice QCD calculations.

Quadrupole forces between quark/gluon subsystems inside higher-spin particles

We generalize the mechanical interpretation of the forces between quark and gluon subsystems, previously studied for the nucleon, to arbitrary higher-spin particles. For spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles, this force is characterized by the non-conserved $\bar{c}(t)$ form factor. However, such an interpretation has not yet been established for higher-spin particles due to the intricate structure of the non-conserved energy-momentum tensor (EMT) form factors. By performing a multipole expansion, we identify the physically meaningful combinations of the non-conserved covariant EMT form factors and provide them with a clear mechanical interpretation.

Tensor-polarized parton density in the $N \to \Delta$ transition from the large-$N_c$ light-cone wave function

The tensor-polarized parton density is defined by the forward matrix element of a partonic operator in the $N \to \Delta$ transition. In this work, we investigate it by employing the large-$N_c$ light-cone wave function derived from the mean-field approach. The mean-field picture is based on low-energy effective dynamics in the large-$N_c$ limit, where the baryon wave function is formulated in the rest frame. By exploiting the covariance of the mean-field solution, we derive the corresponding large-$N_c$ light-cone wave function$\unicode{x2013}$decomposed unambiguously into $3Q$, $5Q$, $7Q$, and higher Fock components$\unicode{x2013}$in the infinite momentum frame. Evaluating the overlap of these wave functions, we derive an overlap representation of the tensor-polarized parton density in the $N \to \Delta$ transition and find that the leading contribution arises from the $5Q$ Fock sector. This indicates that the tensor-polarized parton density directly probes the genuine $5Q$ component and is governed by chiral dynamics. Our numerical analysis shows that the $N \to \Delta$ tensor-polarized parton density is suppressed, consistent with standard large-$N_c$ expectations. Finally, we establish connections among the tensor-polarized parton density, the generalized parton distribution $H_X$, and the energy-momentum tensor form factor $F_4$.

Tensor-polarized parton density in the $N \rightarrow \Delta$ transition

The generalized parton distributions for transitions between baryon states with different masses have a forward limit in which they behave as parton densities (light-front momentum transfer $\Delta^+, \Delta_T = 0$, energy transfer $\Delta^- \neq 0$). These "transition parton densities'' can realize spin/isospin quantum numbers not accessible in the ground-state nucleon. The $N \rightarrow \Delta$ transition gives rise to a new parton density proportional to the $1/2 \rightarrow 3/2$ spin transition tensor. Its properties are derived, and its magnitude is estimated in the chiral quark-soliton model based on the large-$N_c$ limit of QCD.

Chiral-odd generalized parton distributions in the large-$N_{c}$ limit of QCD: Next-to-leading-order contributions

We investigate the nucleon's chiral-odd generalized parton distribution functions (GPDs) in the large-$N_c$ limit of QCD. Extending previous work on the leading-order contribution in the $1/N_c$ expansion, we focus on the next-to-leading-order contributions and provide a complete set of flavor-singlet and flavor-non-singlet chiral-odd GPDs. This study includes the derivation of the spin-flavor structure of the baryon matrix element of the chiral-odd operator, the proof of the polynomiality property and associated sum rules, and numerical estimates based on the gradient expansion. The spin-flavor structure of the nucleon matrix element is interpreted through a multipole expansion in the transverse momentum transfer, leading to the definition of multipole mean-field GPDs. Using these GPDs as the basis of our analysis, we take their $m$-th moments and demonstrate the polynomiality property within the mean-field framework, making use of discrete symmetries in the proof. In particular, the first moments ($m = 1$) of the GPDs are related to the nucleon tensor form factors, as generally required. By performing a gradient expansion, we compute the chiral-odd GPDs and present numerical estimates. Our results show good agreement with lattice QCD predictions.

Gravitational form factors of the nucleon and their mechanical structure: Twist-2 case

We present a series of recent works on the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the nucleon within a pion mean-field approach, which is also called the chiral quark-soliton model. We investigate the flavor structure of the mass, angular momentum, and $D$-term form factors of the nucleon. The main findings of the present work are given as follows: the contribution of the strange quark is rather small for the mass and angular momentum form factors, it plays an essential role in the $D$-term form factors. It indicates that the $D$-term form factor is sensitive to the outer part of the nucleon. The flavor blindness, i.e, $D^{u-d}\simeq 0$, is valid only if the strange quark is considered. We also discuss the effects of twist-4 operators. Though the gluonic contributions are suppressed by the packing fraction of the instanton vacuum in the twist-2 case, contributions from twist-4 operators are significant.

Nucleon tensor form factors at large $N_{c}$

We investigate nucleon tensor form factors in the large-$N_{c}$ limit. In this picture, the nucleon emerges as a state of the $N_c$ valence quarks, which were bound by pion mean fields that were created by the presence of the valence quarks self-consistently. We find that the tensor charge ($g^{u-d}_{T}=0.99$) and the anomalous tensor magnetic moment ($\kappa^{u+d}_{T}=7.61$) are dominated by valence quarks, while the tensor quadrupole moment ($Q^{u-d}_{T}=-7.02$) shows significant sea quark effects. We examine how these quantities vary as the average size of the pion mean field is changed, showing interpolation between non-relativistic quark and Skyrme limits. We also observe that $g^{u-d}_{T}$ and $\kappa^{u+d}_{T}$ depend weakly on the pion mass. In contrast, $Q^{u-d}_{T}$ exhibits strong enhancement near the chiral limit. The numerical results are in good agreement with available lattice QCD data and provide predictions for unmeasured quantities.

Complete definition of $N \rightarrow \Delta$ transition generalized parton distributions

We revisit the definition of the leading-twist chiral-even generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for $N \to \Delta$ baryon transitions. We identify and address deficiencies in previous definitions of the transition GPDs inspired by the transition form factors of the vector and axial-vector currents. Through systematic analysis of all possible covariant structures, respecting discrete symmetries and the baryon spinor equations of motion, we derive complete sets of independent structures for the transition matrix elements of the vector and axial-vector partonic operators. They contain additional structures proportional to the light-cone vector, corresponding to transition GPDs of vanishing first moment, which were not included in previous parametrizations. Their presence is confirmed independently by the light-front multipole expansion and the cross-channel SO(3) partial-wave analysis of the transition matrix elements. Our analysis provides a complete definition of the $N \to \Delta$ transition GPDs for use in theoretical and phenomenological studies.

Chiral-odd generalized parton distributions in the large-$N_{c}$ limit of QCD: Spin-flavor structure, polynomiality, sum rules

We study the nonperturbative properties of the nucleon's chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (transversity GPDs) in the large-$N_c$ limit of QCD. This includes the parametric ordering of the spin-flavor components, the polynomiality property of the moments, and the sum rules connecting the GPDs with the tensor form factors. A multipole expansion in the transverse momentum transfer is used to enumerate and interpret the structures in the nucleon matrix element of the chiral-odd partonic operator, including monopole, dipole and quadrupole terms. The $1/N_c$ expansion of the GPDs is performed using the abstract mean-field picture of baryons in the large-$N_c$ limit and its symmetries. We derive a large-$N_c$ relation between the flavor-nonsinglet GPDs $E_T^{u-d}$ and $\tilde H_T^{u-d}$ and test it with recent lattice QCD results. We show that the polynomiality property and sum rules of the GPDs are fulfilled with the restricted realization of translational and rotational invariance in the mean-field picture. The results provide a basis for the phenomenological analysis of chiral-odd GPDs and hard exclusive processes in the large-$N_c$ limit, and for calculations in specific dynamical models.

Spin-orbit correlations in the nucleon in the large-$N_{c}$ limit

We study the twist-3 spin-orbit correlations of quarks described by the nucleon matrix elements of the parity-odd rank-2 tensor QCD operator (the parity-odd partner of the QCD energy-momentum tensor). Our treatment is based on the effective dynamics emerging from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and the mean-field picture of the nucleon in the large-$N_c$ limit. The twist-3 QCD operators are converted to effective operators, in which the QCD interactions are replaced by spin-flavor-dependent chiral interactions of the quarks with the pion field. We compute the nucleon matrix elements of the twist-3 effective operators and discuss the role of the chiral interactions in the spin-orbit correlations. We derive the first-quantized representation in the mean-field picture and develop a quantum-mechanical interpretation. The chiral interactions give rise to new spin-orbit couplings and qualitatively change the correlations compared to the quark model picture. We also derive the twist-3 matrix elements in the topological soliton picture where the quarks are integrated out (skyrmion). The methods used here can be extended to other QCD operators describing higher-twist nucleon structure and generalized parton distributions.

Instanton effects in twist-3 generalized parton distributions

The instanton vacuum picture is used to study hadronic matrix elements of the twist-3 (dimension-4, spin-1) QCD operators measuring the quark spin density and spin-orbit correlations. The QCD operators are converted to effective operators in the low-energy effective theory emerging after chiral symmetry breaking, in a systematic approach based on the diluteness of the instanton medium and the $1/N_c$ expansion. The instanton fields induce spin-flavor-dependent "potential" terms in the effective operators, complementing the "kinetic" terms from the quark field momenta. As a result, the effective operators obey the same equation-of-motion relations as the original QCD operators. The spin-orbit correlations are qualitatively different from naive quark model expectations.

Mechanical structure of the nucleon and the baryon octet: Twist-2 case

We investigate the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the nucleon and the baryon octet, decomposed into their flavor components, utilizing a pion mean-field approach grounded in the large $N_c$ limit of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Our focus is on the contributions from the twist-2 operators to the flavor-triplet and octet GFFs, and we decompose the mass, angular momentum, and $D$-term form factors of the nucleon into their respective flavors. The strange quark contributions are found to be relatively mild for the mass and angular momentum form factors, while providing significant corrections to the $D$-term form factor. In the course of examining the flavor decomposition of the GFFs, we uncover that the effects of twist-4 operators play a crucial role. While the gluonic contributions are suppressed by the packing fraction of the instanton vacuum in the twist-2 case, contributions from twist-4 operators are of order unity, necessitating its explicit consideration.

Quark distribution functions and spin-flavor structures in $N \to Δ$ transitions

Transition generalized parton distributions have emerged as a novel tool for studying the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) structure of resonances. They provide an integrated picture of the transition form factors and the transition parton distribution functions. In this study, we delve into the angular momentum (AM) properties for the $N\to Δ$ transition and its decomposition into the orbital angular momentum and the intrinsic spin in the context of the quark distribution functions. First, we explore the spin-flavor structures within the framework of both the overlap representations of the three-quark light-cone wave functions and the large $N_c$ limit of QCD. We then estimate the AM quark distribution functions for the $N\to Δ$ transition. Our analysis reveals a substantial flavor asymmetry present in both the orbital angular momentum and intrinsic spin components.
