Observation of a multiferroic critical end point

The study of abrupt increases in magnetization with magnetic field known as metamagnetic transitions has opened a rich vein of new physics in itinerant electron systems, including the discovery of quantum critical end points with a marked propensity to develop new kinds of order. However, the electric analogue of the metamagnetic critical end point, a "metaelectric" critical end point has not yet been realized. Multiferroic materials wherein magnetism and ferroelectricity are cross-coupled are ideal candidates for the exploration of this novel possibility using magnetic-field (\emph{H}) as a tuning parameter. Herein, we report the discovery of a magnetic-field-induced metaelectric transition in multiferroic BiMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ in which the electric polarization (\emph{P}) switches polarity along with a concomitant Mn spin-flop transition at a critical magnetic field \emph{H}$_{\rm c}$. The simultaneous metaelectric and spin-flop transitions become sharper upon cooling, but remain a continuous crossover even down to 0.5 K. Near the \emph{P}=0 line realized at $μ_{0}$\emph{H}$_{\rm c}$$\approx$18 T below 20 K, the dielectric constant ($\varepsilon$) increases significantly over wide field- and temperature (\emph{T})-ranges. Furthermore, a characteristic power-law behavior is found in the \emph{P}(\emph{H}) and $\varepsilon$(\emph{H}) curves at \emph{T}=0.66 K. These findings indicate that a magnetic-field-induced metaelectric critical end point is realized in BiMn$_2$O$_5$ near zero temperature.

Nematic and chiral orders for planar spins on triangular lattice

We propose a variant of the antiferromagnetic XY model on the triangular lattice to study the interplay between the chiral and nematic orders in addition to the magnetic order. The model has a significant bi-quadratic interaction of the planar spins. When the bi-quadratic exchange energy dominates, a large temperature window is shown to exist over which the nematic and the chiral orders co-exist without the magnetic order, thus defining a chiral-nematic state. The phase diagram of the model and some of its critical properties are derived by means of the Monte Carlo simulation.

Quantum Dynamics of Multiferroic Helimagnets: a Schwinger-Boson Approach

We study the quantum dynamics/fluctuation of the cycloidal helical magnet in terms of the Schwinger boson approach. In sharp contrast to the classical fluctuation, the quantum fluctuation is collinear in nature which gives rise to the collinear spin density wave state slightly above the helical cycloidal state as the temperature is lowered. Physical properties such as the reduced elliptic ratio of the spiral, the neutron scattering and infrared absorption spectra are discussed from this viewpoint with the possible relevance to the quasi-one dimensional LiCu$_2$O$_2$ and LiCuVO$_4$.

Exciton formation in graphene bilayer

Exciton instability in graphene bilayer systems is studied in the case of a short-ranged Coulomb interaction and a finite voltage difference between the layers. Self-consistent exciton gap equations are derived and solved numerically and analytically under controlled approximation. We obtain that a critical strength of the Coulomb interaction exists for the formation of excitons. The critical strength depends on the amount of voltage difference between the layers and on the inter-layer hopping parameter.

Coupling of phonons and spin waves in triangular antiferromagnet

We investigate the influence of the spin-phonon coupling in the triangular antiferromagnet where the coupling is of the exchange-striction type. The magnon dispersion is shown to be modified significantly at wave vector (2pi,0) and its symmetry-related points, exhibiting a roton-like minimum and an eventual instability in the dispersion. Various correlation functions such as equal-time phonon correlation, spin-spin correlation, and local magnetization are calculated in the presence of the coupling.

Vector chiral states in low-dimensional quantum spin systems

A class of exact spin ground states with nonzero averages of vector spin chirality, $<Š_i \times Š_j \cdot \hat{z}>$, is presented. It is obtained by applying non-uniform O(2) rotations of spin operators in the XY plane on the SU(2)-invariant Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) states and their parent Hamiltonians. Excitation energies of the new ground states are studied with the use of single-mode approximation in one dimension for S=1. The excitation gap remains robust. Construction of chiral AKLT states is shown to be possible in higher dimensions. We also present a general idea to produce vector chirality-condensed ground states as non-uniform O(2) rotations of the non-chiral parent states. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is shown to imply non-zero spin chirality.

Spin-polarization coupling in multiferroic transition-metal oxides

A systematic microscopic theory of magnetically induced ferroelectricity and lattice modulation is presented for all electron configurations of Mott-insulating transition-metal oxides. Various mechanisms of polarization are identified in terms of a strong-coupling perturbation theory. Especially, the spin-orbit interaction acting on the ligand p orbitals is shown to give the ferroelectric polarization of the spin-current form, which plays a crucial role particularly in eg systems. Semiquantitative agreements with the multiferroic TbMnO3 are obtained. Predictions for X-ray and neutron scattering experiments are proposed to clarify the microscopic mechanism of the spin-polarization coupling in different materials.

The Electronic States of Two Oppositely doped Mott Insulators Bilayers

We study the effect of Coulomb interaction between two oppositely doped low-dimensional tJ model systems. We exactly show that, in the one-dimensional case, an arbitrarily weak interaction leads to the formation of charge neutral electron-hole pairs. We then use two different mean-field theories to address the two-dimensional case, where inter-layer excitons also form and condense. We propose that this results in new features which have no analog in single layers, such as the emergence of an insulating spin liquid phase. Our simple bilayer model might have relevance to the physics of doped Mott insulator interfaces and of the new four layer Ba2CaCu4O8 compound.

Bond electronic polarization induced by spin

We study theoretically the electric polarization induced by noncollinear spin configurations in the limit of strong Hund coupling. We employ a model of two magnetic ions sandwitching an oxygen ion. It is shown that there appears a longitudinal polarization P_x along the bond, which is roughly proportional to (m_r^x)^2-(m_l^x)^2 where m_{r(l)}^x is the x-component of the spin orientation vector at right (left) magnetic ion. A numerical study of the model Hamiltonian yields both longitudinal and transverse electric dipole moments. The transverse polarization is shown to have a non-uniform as well as a uniform component, with the latter being consistent with the previous theory. The longitudinal polarization is non-uniform and oscillating with the period half that of the spin order, but the local magnitude is typically much larger than the uniform transverse polarization and may be detected by X-ray/neutron scattering experiments.

Classical Ring-exchange Processes on the Triangular Lattice

The effects of the ring-exchange Hamiltonian H_3 = J_3 sum_{ } (S_i * S_j) (S_i * S_k) on the triangular lattice are studied using classical Monte Carlo simulations. Each spin $S_i$ is treated as a classical XY spin taking on Q equally spaced angles (Q-states clock model). For Q=6, a first-order transition into a stripe-ordered phase preempts the macroscopic classical degeneracy. For Q > 6, a finite window of critical phase exists, intervening between the low-temperature stripe phase and the high-temperature paramagnetic phase.

Valence-bond-solid order in antiferromagnets with spin-lattice coupling

We propose that a valence-bond-solid (VBS) order can be stabilized in certain two-dimensional antiferromagnets due to spin-lattice coupling. In contrast to the VBS state of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tesaki (AKLT) type in which the spin $2S$ and the lattice coordination $z$ must be commensurate, the spin-lattice coupling-induced VBS state can occur when $2S$ is not an integer multiple of $z$. As a concrete example, S=2 spins on the triangular network with $z=6$ is discussed. Within the Schwinger boson mean-field theory it is shown that the ground state is given by the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ modulation of the valence bond amplitudes for sufficiently strong spin-lattice coupling. Using the corresponding AKLT wave function, we work out the excitation spectrum for this state within the single-mode approximation. The calculated spectrum should provide a new type of collective mode which is distinct from the spin wave excitations of the magnetically ordered ground state.

Phases of Mott-Hubbard bilayers

A phase diagram of two Mott-Hubbard planes interacting with a short-range Coulomb repulsion is presented. Considering the case of equal amount of doping by holes in one layer as electrons in the other, a holon-doublon inter-layer exciton formation is shown to be a natural consequence of Coulomb attraction. Quasiparticle spectrum is gapped and incoherent below a critical doping $δ_c$ due to the formation of excitons. A spin liquid insulator (SLI) phase is thus realized without the lattice frustration. The critical value $δ_{c}$ sensitively depends on the inter-layer interaction strength. In the $tJ$ model description of each layer with the d-wave pairing, $δ_{c}$ marks the crossover between SLI and d-wave superconductor. The SLI phase, despite being non-superconducting and charge-gapped, still shows electromagnetic response similar to that of a superfluid due to the exciton transport. Including antiferromagnetic order in the $tJ$ model introduces magnetically ordered phases at low doping and pushes the spin liquid phase to a larger inter-layer interaction strength and higher doping concentrations.

Slave rotor theory of antiferromagnetic Hubbard model

The slave-rotor mean-field theory of Florens and Georges is generalized to the antiferromagnetic phase of the Hubbard model. An effective action consisting of a spin rotor and a fermion is derived and the corresponding saddle-point action is analyzed. Zero-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Hubbard model is presented. While the magnetic phase persists for all values of the Hubbard interaction U, the single-particle spectral function exhibits a crossover into an incoherent phase when the magnetic moment m (and the corresponding U values) lies within a certain window m_c < m < 1-m_c, indicating a possible deviation from the Hartree-Fock theory.

Lattice-coupled Antiferromagnet on Frustrated Lattices

Lattice-coupled antiferromagnetic spin model is analyzed for a number of frustrated lattices: triangular, Kagome, and pyrochlore. In triangular and Kagome lattices where ground state spins are locally ordered, the spin-lattice interaction does not lead to a static deformation of the lattice. In the pyrochlore structure, spin-lattice coupling supports a picture of the hexagon spin cluster proposed in the recent experiment[S. H. Lee et al. Nature, 418, 856 (2002)]. Through spin-lattice interaction a uniform contraction of the individual hexagons in the pyrochlore lattice can take place and reduce the exchange energy. Residual hexagon-hexagon interaction takes the form of a 3-states Potts model where the preferred directions of the spin-loop directors for nearby hexagons are mutually orthogonal.

Effective Vortex Mass from Microscopic Theory

We calculate the effective mass of a single quantized vortex in the BCS superconductor at finite temperature. Based on effective action approach, we arrive at the effective mass of a vortex as integral of the spectral function $J(ω)$ divided by $ω^3$ over frequency. The spectral function is given in terms of the quantum-mechanical transition elements of the gradient of the Hamiltonian between two Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) eigenstates. Based on self-consistent numerical diagonalization of the BdG equation we find that the effective mass per unit length of vortex at zero temperature is of order $m (k_f ξ_0)^2$ ($k_f$=Fermi momentum, $ξ_0$=coherence length), essentially equaling the electron mass displaced within the coherence length from the vortex core. Transitions between the core states are responsible for most of the mass. The mass reaches a maximum value at $T\approx 0.5 T_c$ and decreases continuously to zero at $T_c$.

Keldysh Functional Integral Theory of Non-equilibrium Kondo Bridge

We develop a consistent method for calculating non-equilibrium Green's functions for a nano-sized dot coupled to electron reservoirs by tunneling. The leads are generally at different chemical potentials (non-equilibrium), and the dot may be a single molecule characterized by its own vibrational frequency $\wph$. We carry out a Keldysh functional analysis of the effective Green's functions of the local electron in the dot, and also of the vibration mode, in the Kondo regime. Finally, the tunneling current is calculated as a function of bias using non-equilibrium Green's function. We find stepwise increase of the current when bias exceeds even multiples of the phonon frequency.

Effects of the Two- Gap Nature on the Microwave Conductivity of 39 K Polycrystalline MgB2 Films

The surface resistance (Rs) and the real part (sigma_1) of the microwave complex conductivity of a ~380 nm-thick polycrystalline MgB2 film with the critical temperature (Tc) of 39.3 K were investigated at ~8.5 GHz as a function of temperature. Two coherence peaks were observed in the sigma_1 versus temperature curve at temperatures of ~0.5 Tc and ~0.9 Tc, respectively, providing a direct evidence for the two-gap nature of MgB2. The film appeared to have a pi-band gap energy of 1.8 meV. For the MgB2 film ion-milled down to the thickness of ~320 nm, two coherence peaks were still observed with the first conductivity peak at ~0.6 Tc. Reduction of Tc by 3 K and reduced normal-state conductivity at Tc were observed along with an enhanced pi-band gap energy of 2.1 meV and a reduced Rs at temperatures below 15 K for the ion-milled film. Calculations based on the gap energies from the weak coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and the strong coupling theory suggest that both the sigma-band and the pi-band contribute to sigma_1 of the polycrystalline MgB2 films significantly. Our results are in contrast with the observation of single coherence peak at ~0.6 Tc and dominant role of the pi-band in the microwave conductivity of c-axis oriented MgB2 films as reported by Jin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 127006 (2003)]. Variations in the inter-band coupling constants with the level of disorder can account for the different Tc and sigma_1 behavior for the as-grown and ion-milled films. Our results suggest that enhanced inter-band scattering can improve microwave properties of MgB2 filims at low temperatures due to the larger pi-band gap despite the reduction of Tc.

Dynamical mean-field theory of Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling: Zero temperature metal-insulator and insulator-insulator transitions

We study the Hubbard-Holstein model, which includes both the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions characterized by $U$ and $g$, respectively, employing the dynamical mean-field theory combined with Wilson's numerical renormalization group technique. A zero temperature phase diagram of metal-insulator and insulator-insulator transitions at half-filling is mapped out which exhibits the interplay between $U$ and $g$. As $U$ ($g$) is increased, a metal to Mott-Hubbard insulator (bipolaron insulator) transition occurs, and the two insulating states are distinct and can not be adiabatically connected. The nature of and transitions between the three states are discussed.
