Accurate non-empirical range-separated hybrid van der Waals density functional for complex molecular problems, solids, and surfaces

We introduce a new, general-purpose, range-separated hybrid van der Waals density \ph{functional, termed vdW-DF-ahbr,} within the non-empirical vdW-DF method [JPCM 32, 393001 (2020)]. It combines correlation from vdW-DF2 with a screened Fock exchange that is fixed by \ph{a new model of exchange effects} in the density-explicit vdW-DF2-b86r functional [PRB 89, 121103(R) (2014)]. The new vdW-DF2-ahbr prevents spurious exchange binding and has a small-density-gradient form set from many-body perturbation analysis. It is accurate for \ph{bulk as well as layered materials} and it systematically and significantly improves the performance of present vdW-DFs for molecular problems. Importantly, vdW-DF2-ahbr also outperforms present-standard (dispersion-corrected) range-separated hybrids on a broad collection of noncovalent-interaction benchmark sets, while at the same time successfully mitigating the density-driven errors that often affect the description of molecular transition states and isomerization calculations. vdW-DF2-ahbr furthermore improves on state of the art density functional theory approaches by 1) correctly predicting both the substrate structure and the site preference for CO adsorption on Pt(111), 2) outperforming existing non-empirical vdW-DFs for the description of CO$_2$ adsorption in both a functionalized and in a simple metal-organic framework, and 3) being highly accurate \ph{for the} set of base-pair interactions in a model of DNA assembly.

Cooperative gas adsorption without a phase transition in metal-organic frameworks

Cooperative adsorption of gases by porous frameworks permits more efficient uptake and removal than does the more usual non-cooperative (Langmuir-type) adsorption. Cooperativity, signaled by a step-like isotherm, is usually attributed to a phase transition of the framework. However, the class of metal-organic frameworks mmen-M$_2$(dobpdc) exhibit cooperative adsorption of CO2 but show no evidence of a phase transition. Here we show how cooperativity emerges in these frameworks in the absence of a phase transition. We use a combination of quantum and statistical mechanics to show that cooperativity results from a sharp but finite increase, with pressure, of the mean length of chains of CO2 molecules that polymerize within the framework. Our study provides microscopic understanding of the emergent features of cooperative binding, including the position, slope and height of the isotherm step, and indicates how to optimize gas storage and separation in these materials.

Assessment of two hybrid van der Waals density functionals for covalent and non-covalent binding of molecules

Two hybrid van der Waals density functionals (vdW-DFs) are constructed using 25%, Fock exchange with i) the consistent-exchange vdW-DF-cx functional and ii) with the vdW-DF2 functional. The ability to describe covalent and non-covalent binding properties of molecules are assessed. For properties related to covalent binding, atomization energies (G2-1 set), molecular reaction energies (G2RC set), as well as ionization energies (G21IP set) are benchmarked against experimental reference values. We find that hybrid-vdW-DF-cx yields results that are rather similar to those of the standard non-empirical hybrid PBE0 [JCP 110, 6158 (1996)]. Hybrid vdW-DF2 follows somewhat different trends, showing on average significantly larger deviations from the reference energies, with a MAD of 14.5 kcal/mol for the G2-1 set. Non-covalent binding properties of molecules are assessed using the S22 benchmark set of non-covalently bonded dimers and the X40 set of dimers of small halogenated molecules, using wavefunction-based quantum chemistry results for references. For the S22 set, hybrid-vdW-DF-cx performs better than standard vdW-DF-cx for the mostly hydrogen-bonded systems. Hybrid-vdW-DF2 offers a slight improvement over standard vdW-DF2. Similar trends are found for the X40 set, with hybrid-vdW-DF-cx performing particularly well for binding involving the strongly polar hydrogen halides, but poorly for systems with tiny binding energies. Our study of the X40 set reveals both the potential of mixing Fock exchange with vdW-DF, but also highlights shortcomings of the hybrids constructed here. The solid performance of hybrid-vdW-DF-cx for covalent-bonded systems, as well as the strengths and issues uncovered for non-covalently bonded systems, makes this study a good starting point for developing even more precise hybrid vdW-DFs.

Effects of spin-orbit interaction on magnetic and electronic structures in antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO

Magnetic and electronic structures in LaFeAsO in the single-stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase are studied using first-principles density-functional calculations including the spin-orbit interaction. We show that the longitudinal ordering (LO) where Fe magnetic moments are parallel or anti-parallel with the in-plane AFM ordering vector is lower in energy than transverse orderings (TOs), in good agreement with neutron diffraction experiments. Calculated energy difference between LO and TOs is about 0.1 meV per Fe atom, indicating that LO will prevail at temperature below about 1 K. We also show that the spin-orbit interaction splits degenerate bands at some high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone by about 60 meV, depending on spatial directions of the Fe magnetic moments.

Two Distinct Modes of Hydrogen-Bonding Interaction in the Prototypic Hybrid Halide Perovskite, Tetragonal CH3NH3PbI3

In spite of the key role of hydrogen bonding in the structural stabilization of the prototypic hybrid halide perovskite, CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3), little progress has been made in our in-depth understanding of the hydrogen-bonding interaction between the MA+-ion and the iodide ions in the PbI6-octahedron network. Herein, we show that there exist two distinct types of the hydrogen-bonding interaction, naming a- and b-modes, in the tetragonal MAPbI3 on the basis of symmetry argument and density-functional theory calculations. The computed Kohn-Sham (K-S) energy difference between these two interaction modes is 45.14 meV per MA-site with the a-interaction mode being responsible for the stable hydrogen-bonding network. We have further estimated the individual bonding strength for the ten relevant hydrogen bonds having a bond critical point. The net difference in the total hydrogen-bonding energies between these two interaction modes is 43.87 meV per MA-site, which nearly coincides with the K-S energy difference of 45.14 meV.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Properties of a Perovskite-Related Bismuth Phase, (NH4)3Bi2I9

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites, especially methylammonium lead halide, have recently led to a remarkable breakthrough in photovoltaic devices. However, due to the environmental and stability concerns of the heavy metal, lead, in these perovskite based solar cells, research in the non-lead perovskite structures have been attracting increasing attention. In this study, a layered perovskite-like architecture, (NH4)3Bi2I9, was prepared in solution and the structure was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results from DFT calculations showed the significant lone pair effect of the bismuth ion and the band gap was measured as around 2.04 eV, which is lower than the band gap of CH3NH3PbBr3. Conductivity measurement was also performed to examine the potential in the applications as an alternative to the lead containing perovskites.

Anomalous domain periodicity observed in ferroelectric PbTiO3 nanodots with 180o stripe domains

PbTiO3-based nano-scale dots and tubes have received a great deal of attention owing to their potential applications to nonvolatile memories and multi-functional devices. As for the size effect of 180o stripe domains in ferroelectric thin films, there have been extensive reports on the thickness-dependent domain periodicity. All these studies have revealed that the domain periodicity of 180o stripe domains scales with the film thickness (d) according to the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Kittel (LLK) scaling law down to the thickness of ~2 nm. In the case of PbTiO3 nanodots, however, we obtained a quite striking correlation that for the thickness less than a certain critical value, dc (~35 nm), the domain width even increases with decreasing thickness of the nanodot, which surprisingly indicates a negative value in the LLK scaling-law exponent. On the basis of theoretical considerations of dc, we attribute this anomalous domain periodicity to the presence of a nonferroelectric surface layer, in addition to the finite lateral-size effect of a ferroelectric nanodot.
