Classification of multiple arbitrary-order non-Hermitian singularities

We demonstrate general classifications of Riemann surface topology generated by multiple arbitrary-order exceptional points of quasi-stationary states. Our studies reveal all possible product permutations of holonomy matrices that describe a stroboscopic encircling of 2nd order exceptional points. The permutations turn out to be categorized into a finite number of classes according to the topological structures of the Riemann surfaces. We further show that the permutation classes can be derived from combinations of cyclic building blocks associated with higher-order exceptional points. Our results are verified by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian founded on generic Jordan forms and then examined in physical systems of desymmetrized optical microcavities.

Revealing non-Hermitian band structures of photonic Floquet media

Periodically driven systems, characterised by their inherent non-equilibrium dynamics, are ubiquitously found in both classical and quantum regimes. In the field of photonics, these Floquet systems have begun to provide insight into how time periodicity can extend the concept of spatially periodic photonic crystals and metamaterials to the time domain. However, despite the necessity arising from the presence of non-reciprocal coupling between states in a photonic Floquet medium, a unified non-Hermitian band structure description remains elusive. Here, we experimentally reveal the unique Bloch-Floquet and non-Bloch band structures of a photonic Floquet medium emulated in the microwave regime with a one-dimensional array of time-periodically driven resonators. Specifically, these non-Hermitian band structures are shown to be two measurable distinct subsets of complex eigenfrequency surfaces of the photonic Floquet medium defined in complex momentum space. In the Bloch-Floquet band structure, the driving-induced non-reciprocal coupling between oppositely signed frequency states leads to opening of momentum gaps along the real momentum axis, at the edges of which exceptional phase transitions occur. More interestingly, we show that the non-Bloch band structure defined in the complex Brillouin zone supplements the information on the morphology of complex eigenfrequency surfaces of the photonic Floquet medium. Our work paves the way for a comprehensive understanding of photonic Floquet media in complex energy-momentum space and could provide general guidelines for the study of non-equilibrium photonic phases of matter.

Double layered transformation cavities: Crossover between local and global transformations

We study the resonant modes in double-layered transformation cavities consisting of inner and outer layer boundaries where the mode intensity is mainly located inside the inner layer. This is an intermediate design between a transformation cavity and a cavity in a wholly transformed space of transformation optics. We demonstrate the crossover between these two extreme cases as the outer layer of the cavity varies and also explore the properties of the resonant modes in the cavity. While the near-field patterns of the resonant modes do not change as the outer layer becomes larger, the Q-factors approach those of a cavity in the wholly transformed space of transformation optics, and the far-field patterns are modified.

Stochastic thermodynamics of inertial-like Stuart-Landau dimer

Stuart-Landau limit-cycle oscillators are a paradigm in the study of coherent and incoherent limit cycles. In this work, we generalize the standard Stuart-Landau dimer model to include effects due to an inertia-like term and noise and study its dynamics and stochastic thermodynamics. In the absence of noise (zero-temperature limit), the dynamics show the emergence of a new bistable phase where coherent and incoherent limit cycles coexist. At finite temperatures, we develop a stochastic thermodynamic framework based on the dynamics of a charged particle in a magnetic field to identify physically meaningful heat and work. The stochastic system no longer exhibits the bistable phase but the thermodynamic observables, such as work, exhibit bistability in the temporally metastable regime. We demonstrate that the inertial-like Stuart-Landau dimer operates like a machine, reliably outputting the most work when the oscillators coherently synchronize and unreliable with minimum work output when the oscillators are incoherent. Overall, our results show the importance of coherent synchronization within the working substance in the operation of a thermal machine.

Impact of non-Hermitian Mode interaction on Inter-cavity Light transfer

Understanding inter-site mutual mode interaction in coupled physical systems is essential to comprehend large compound systems as this local interaction determines the successive multiple inter-site energy transfer efficiency. We demonstrate that only the non-Hermitian coupling can correctly account for the light transfer between two coupled optical cavities. We also reveal that the non-Hermitian coupling effect becomes much crucial as the system dimension gets smaller. Our results provide an important insight to deal with general coupled-devices in the quantum regime.

Transformation cavities with a narrow refractive index profile

Recently, gradient index cavities, or so-called transformation cavities, designed by conformal transformation optics have been studied to support resonant modes with both high Q-factors and emission directionality. We propose a new design method for transformation cavities to realize a narrower width of the refractive index profile, a great advantage in experimental implementations, without losing the benefits of conformal mapping. We study the resonant modes with both high Q-factor and directional emission in the newly designed transformation cavities, where the refractive index profile is 50 percent narrower than in previously proposed transformation cavities. By varying a system parameter with a fixed maximal value of the refractive index profile inside the cavity, the width of the refractive index profile narrows, the Q-factors become higher, and the near and far field patterns maintain their properties, namely conformal whispering gallery modes and bidirectional emission, respectively.

Topological edge states in bowtie ladders with different cutting edges

We have studied topological edge states in bowtie ladders with various edge truncations. The symmetric bowtie ladder, which comprises two trivial Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattices, exhibits an insulator-metal transition with trivial insulating states. On the other hand, the lattice can be transformed into an extended SSH lattice depending on the edge shapes with non-trivial insulating states in that the winding number is non-zero. The winding numbers are permutationally designated in the phase diagram depending on the choice of unit cell. The topological edge states are affected by the shape of the edge and the corresponding winding number. We also studied general bowtie ladder models with richer phase diagrams using the characteristics of the localization length of the edge states showing state bifurcation.

Non-orientability induced PT phase transition in Moebius ladder lattices

We study parity-time (PT) phase transitions in the energy spectra of ladder lattices caused by the interplay between non-orientability and non-Hermitian PT symmetry. The energy spectra show level crossings in circular ladder lattices with increasing on-site energy gain-loss because of the orientability of a normal strip. However, the energy levels show PT phase transitions in PT-symmetric Moebius ladder lattices due to the non-orientability of a Moebius strip. In order to understand the level crossings of PT symmetric phases, we generalize the rotational transformation using a complex rotation angle. We also study the modification of resonant tunneling induced by a sharply twisted interface in PT-symmetric ladder lattices. Finally, we find that the perfect transmissions at the zero energy are recovered at the exceptional points of the PT-symmetric system due to the self-orthogonal states.

Circle-shaped Transformation Cavity via Center-Shift Möbius Transfomation

Circle-shaped transformation cavities of shifted center are the most simple transformation cavities in the sense that they have only spatial index variation without boundary shape deformation. For these cavities, we analyze the characteristics of conformal whispering gallery modes according to center-shift coordinate transformation. For this study, we use an alternative scheme for designing a transformation cavity without using a shrinking parameter that is needed to satisfy total internal reflection condition. It is observed that the isotropic emission of whispering gallery modes in the uniform index circular cavity changes to the bi-directional emission of conformal whispering gallery modes as the center-shift increases. Also, using a purity factor that quantitatively measures in RV space the degree of intactness for the internal wave pattern of resonant modes in transformation cavities compared with corresponding whispering gallery mode in uniform disk cavity, we show that the conformal whispering gallery modes in the circle-shaped transformation cavity has not only directionality but also high persistence for characteristics of whispering gallery modes.

Whispering gallery modes in triple microdisks of triangular configurations

We study whispering gallery modes in triple microdisks of equilateral and isosceles triangular configurations. The characteristic properties of resonant modes in three microdisks on vertices of an equilateral triangle are explained by discrete rotational symmetry of the triangle. The avoided crossings of resonant modes in three microdisks on vertices of an isosceles triangle are also studied in terms of a combination of single and coupled microdisks. Finally, we propose the matrix models which well explain the resonant modes in triple microdisks.

Boundary integral equation method for resonances in gradient index cavities designed by conformal transformation optics

In the case of two-dimensional gradient index cavities designed by the conformal transformation optics, we propose a boundary integral equation method for the calculation of resonant mode functions by employing a fictitious space which is reciprocally equivalent to the physical space. Using the Green's function of the interior region of the uniform index cavity in the fictitious space, resonant mode functions and their far-field distributions in the physical space can be obtained. As a verification, resonant modes in limaçon-shaped transformation cavities were calculated and mode patterns and far-field intensity distributions were compared with those of the same modes obtained from the finite element method.

Oscillation death in coupled counter-rotating identical nonlinear oscillators

We study oscillatory and oscillation suppressed phases in coupled counter-rotating nonlinear oscillators. We demonstrate the existence of limit cycle, amplitude death, and oscillation death, and also clarify the Hopf, pitchfork, and infinite period bifurcations between them. Especially, the oscillation death is a new type of oscillation suppressions of which the inhomogeneous steady states are neutrally stable. We discuss the robust neutral stability of the oscillation death in non-conservative systems via the anti-PT-symmetric phase transitions at exceptional points in terms of non-Hermitian systems.

Statistical properties of chaotic microcavities in small and large opening cases

We study the crossover behavior of statistical properties of eigenvalues in a chaotic microcavity with different refractive indices. The level spacing distributions change from Wigner to Poisson distributions as the refractive index of a microcavity decreases. We propose a non-hermitian matrix model with random elements describing the spectral properties of the chaotic microcavity, which exhibits the crossover behaviors as the opening strength increases.

Emergent localized states at the interface of a twofold $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric lattice

We consider the role of non-triviality resulting from a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that conserves twofold PT-symmetry assembled by interconnections between a PT-symmetric lattice and its time reversal partner. Twofold PT-symmetry in the lattice produces additional surface exceptional points that play the role of new critical points, along with the bulk exceptional point. We show that there are two distinct regimes possessing symmetry-protected localized states, of which localization lengths are robust against external gain and loss. The states are demonstrated by numerical calculation of a quasi-1D ladder lattice and a 2D bilayered square lattice.

Optimization of conformal whispering gallery modes in limaçon-shaped transformation cavities

In limaçon-shaped gradient index dielectric cavities designed by conformal transformation optics, the variation of Q-factors and emission directionality of resonant modes was traced in their system parameter space. For these cavities, their boundary shapes and refractive index profiles are determined in each case by a chosen conformal mapping which is taken as a coordinate transformation. Through the numerical exploration, we found that bidirectionality factors of generic high-Q resonant modes are not directly proportional to their Q-factors. The optimal system parameters for the coexistence of strong bidirectionality and a high Q-factor was obtained for anisotropic whispering gallery modes supported by total internal reflection.

Splitting of conductance resonance through a magnetic quantum dot in graphene

We report a dual resonance feature in ballistic conductance through a quantum Hall graphene nanoribbon with a magnetic quantum dot. Such a magnetic quantum dot localizes Dirac fermions exhibiting anisotropic eigenenergy spectra with broken time-reversal symmetry. Interplay between the localized states and quantum Hall edge states is found to be two-fold, showing Breit-Wigner and Fano resonances, which is reminiscent of a double quantum dot system. By fitting the numerical results with the Fano-Breit-Wigner lineshape from the double quantum dot model, we demonstrate that the two-fold resonance is due to the valley mixing that comes from the coupling of the magnetic quantum dot with quantum Hall edge channels; an effective double quantum dot system emerges from a single magnetic quantum dot in virtue of the valley degree of freedom. It is further confirmed that the coupling is weaker for the Fano resonance and stronger for the Breit-Wigner resonace.

Flat-band localization and self-collimation of light in photonic crystals

We investigate the optical properties of a photonic crystal composed of a quasi-one-dimensional flat-band lattice array through finite-difference time-domain simulations. The photonic bands contain flat bands (FBs) at specific frequencies, which correspond to compact localized states as a consequence of destructive interference. The FBs are shown to be nondispersive along the $Γ\rightarrow X$ line, but dispersive along the $Γ\rightarrow Y$ line. The FB localization of light in a single direction only results in a self-collimation of light propagation throughout the photonic crystal at the FB frequency.

Antiresonance induced by symmetry-broken contacts in quasi-one-dimensional lattices

We report the effect of symmetry-broken contacts on quantum transport in quasi-one-dimensional lattices. In contrast to 1D chains, transport in quasi-one-dimensional lattices, which are made up of a finite number of 1D chain layers, is strongly influenced by contacts. Contact symmetry depends on whether the contacts maintain or break the parity symmetry between the layers. With balanced on-site potential, a flat band can be detected by asymmetric contacts, but not by symmetric contacts. In the case of asymmetric contacts with imbalanced on-site potential, transmission is suppressed at certain energies. We elucidate these energies of transmission suppression related to antiresonance using reduced lattice models and Feynman paths. These results provide a nondestructive measurement of flat band energy which it is difficult to detect.
