Dynamical Symmetry and the Thermofield State at Large $N$

We discus Thermofield Double QFT at real time, in the large $N$ limit. First, we establish a (dynamical) symmetry which we argue holds in general on the real time portion of the Schwinger-Kelydish contour. At large $N$ this symmetry is seen to generate a one parameter degeneracy of stationary collective solutions. The construction is explicitly worked out on the example of $O(N)$ vector QFT. As a nontrivial application we describe construction of the corresponding (large $N$) Thermofield Double State in real time collective formalism.

A Bound on Chaos from Stability

We explore the quantum chaos of the coadjoint orbit action. We study quantum fluctuation around a saddle point to evaluate the soft mode contribution to the out-of-time-ordered correlator. We show that the stability condition of the semi-classical analysis of the coadjoint orbit found by Witten (1988) leads to the upper bound on the Lyapunov exponent which is identical to the bound on chaos proven in arXiv:1503.01409. The bound is saturated by the coadjoint orbit $\text{Diff}(S^1)/SL(2)$ while the other stable orbit $\text{Diff}(S^1)/U(1)$ where the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ is broken to $U(1)$ has non-maximal Lyapunov exponent.

Sign-Problem-Free Variant of Complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

We construct a sign-problem free variant of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model which keeps all the essential properties of the SYK model, including the analytic solvability in the large-$N$ limit and being maximally chaotic. In addition to the number of complex fermions $N$, our model has an additional parameter $M$ controlling the number of terms in the Hamiltonian which we take $M \to \infty$ with keeping $M/N$ constant in the large-$N$ limit. While our model respects global $U(1)$ symmetry associated with the fermion number conservation, both the large-$N$ limit and the sign-problem free nature become explicit in the Majorana representation. We present a detailed analysis on our model, i.e., the random matrix classification based on the symmetry analysis, analytic approach, and the quantum Monte Carlo simulations. All these analysis show that our model exhibit a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) physics, a gapless fermionic system lying beyond the conventional Fermi liquid picture.

$T\bar T$-deformed Fermionic Theories Revisited

We revisit $T\bar T$ deformations of $d=2$ theories with fermions with a view toward the quantization. As a simple illustration, we compute the deformed Dirac bracket for a Majorana doublet and confirm the known eigenvalue flows perturbatively. We mostly consider those $T\bar T$ theories that can be reconstructed from string-like theories upon integrating out the worldsheet metric. After a quick overview of how this works when we add NSR-like or GS-like fermions, we obtain a known non-supersymmetric $T\bar T$ deformation of a $\cN=(1,1)$ theory from the latter, based on the Noether energy-momentum. This worldsheet reconstruction implies that the latter is actually a supersymmetric subsector of a $d=3$ GS-like model, implying hidden supercharges, which we do construct explicitly. This brings us to ask about different $T\bar T$ deformations, such as manifestly supersymmetric $T\bar T$ and also more generally via the symmetric energy-momentum. We show that, for theories with fermions, such choices often lead us to doubling of degrees of freedom, with potential unitarity issues. We show that the extra sector develops a divergent gap in the "small deformation" limit and decouples in the infrared, although it remains uncertain in what sense these can be considered a deformation.

Unitarity of Entanglement and Islands in Two-Sided Janus Black Holes

We explore the entanglement evolution of boundary intervals in eternal Janus black holes that can be embedded consistently into string theory in the low-energy limit. By studying the geodesics we show that there is a transition in the entanglement characteristic around the Page time, which manifests the unitarity of the evolution. We reproduce and reinterpret these bulk results from two different lower-dimensional perspectives: first as an interface CFT in the usual AdS/CFT correspondence and second as an effective gravity theory in one lower dimension coupled to a radiation background. In the limit where the number of interface degrees of freedom becomes large, we obtain an effective theory on appropriate branes that replace the deep interior region in the bulk, coined the shadow region. In this effective theory, we also identify the island of the radiation entanglement wedge and verify the newly proposed quantum extremization method. Our model clarifies that double holography with gravity in two higher dimensions can be realized in a concrete and consistent way and that the occurrence of islands is natural in one higher dimension. Furthermore, our model reveals that there can be a transitional behavior of the Page curve before the Page time, which is related to the emergence of new matter degrees of freedom on the branes.

Chaos in Three-dimensional Higher Spin Gravity

We discuss $SL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons higher spin gauge theories in Euclidean AdS$_3$. With appropriate boundary term, we derive the higher spin generalization of Schwarzian on-shell action. We investigate gravitationally dressed bi-locals, and we study the soft higher spin mode expansion to obtain soft mode eigenfunctions. We also derive the spin-$s$ eigenfunction from $\mathcal{W}$-Ward identity and a recursion relation. Using the on-shell action, we evaluate the contributions of the soft higher spin modes to the out-of-time-order correlators, and the corresponding Lyapunov exponent of $SL(N)$ higher spin gravity is found to be ${2π\over β}(N-1)$.

Quantum Correction to Chaos in Schwarzian Theory

We discuss the quantum correction to chaos in the Schwarzian theory. We carry out the semi-classical analysis of the Schwarzian theory to study Feynman diagrams of the Schwarzian soft mode. We evaluate the contribution of the soft mode to the out-of-time-order correlator up to order $\mathcal{O}(g^4)$. We show that the quantum correction of order $\mathcal{O}(g^4)$ by the soft mode decreases the maximum Lyapunov exponent $2π/ β$.

On the Chaos Bound in Rotating Black Holes

We study out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) of rotating BTZ black holes using two different approaches: the elastic eikonal gravity approximation, and the Chern-Simons formulations of 3-dimensional gravity. Within both methods the OTOC is given as a sum of two contributions, corresponding to left and right moving modes. The contributions have different Lyapunov exponents, $λ_L^{\pm}=\frac{2π}β\frac{1}{1\mp \ell Ω}$, where $Ω$ is the angular velocity and $\ell$ is the AdS radius. Since $λ_L^{-} \leq \frac{2π}β \leq λ_L^{+}$, there is an apparent contradiction with the chaos bound. We discuss how the result can be made consistent with the chaos bound if one views $β_{\pm}=β(1\mp \ell Ω)$ as the effective inverse temperatures of the left and right moving modes.

AdS Maps and Diagrams of Bi-local Holography

We present in detail the basic ingredients contained in bi-local holography, representing a constructive scheme for reconstructing AdS bulk theories in Vectorial/AdS duality. Explicit Mapping to bulk AdS and higher spin fields is seen to be given by a double Fourier transform. All order interactions are explicitly specified through the collective action. This generates bulk Feynman (Witten) diagrams (at tree and loop level). We give details of the four-point case evaluation. It is noted that the bi-local construction goes beyond the assumptions in various discussions of non-locality.

Abelian Tensor Models on the Lattice

We consider a chain of Abelian Klebanov-Tarnopolsky fermionic tensor models coupled through quartic nearest-neighbor interactions. We characterize the gauge-singlet spectrum for small chains ($L=2,3,4,5$) and observe that the spectral statistics exhibits strong evidences in favor of quasi-many body localization.

Thouless time for mass-deformed SYK

We study the onset of RMT dynamics in the mass-deformed SYK model (i.e. an SYK model deformed by a quadratic random interaction) in terms of the strength of the quadratic deformation. We use as chaos probes both the connected unfolded Spectral Form Factor (SFF) as well as the Gaussian-filtered SFF, which has been recently introduced in the literature. We show that they detect the chaotic/integrable transition of the mass-deformed SYK model at different values of the mass deformation: the Gaussian-filtered SFF sees the transition for large values of the mass deformation; the connected unfolded SFF sees the transition at small values. The latter is in qualitative agreement with the transition as seen by the OTOCs. We argue that the chaotic/integrable deformation affect the energy levels inhomogeneously: for small values of the mass deformation only the low-lying states are modified while for large values of the mass deformation also the states in the bulk of the spectrum move to the integrable behavior.

Supersymmetric SYK Model with Global Symmetry

In this paper, we introduce an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric SYK model with $SO(q)$ global symmetry. We study the large $N$ expansion of the bi-local collective action of our model. At strong coupling limit, this model exhibits a super-reparametrization symmetry, and the $SO(q)$ global symmetry is enhanced to a $\widehat{SO}(q)$ local symmetry. The corresponding symmetry algebra is the semi-direct product of the super-Virasoro and the super-Kac-Moody algebras. These emergent symmetries are spontaneously and explicitly broken, which leads to a low energy effective action: super-Schwarzian action plus an action of a super-particle on the $SO(q)$ group manifold. We analyze the zero mode contributions to the chaotic behavior of four point functions in various $SO(q)$ channels. In singlet channel, we show that the out-of-time-ordered correlators related to bosonic bi-locals exhibit the saturation of the chaos bound as in the non-SUSY SYK model. On the other hand, we find that the ones with fermionic bi-locals in the singlet channel have ${π\overβ}$ Lyapunov exponent. In the anti-symmetric channel, we demonstrate that the out-of-time-ordered correlator related to a $SO(q)$ generator grows linearly in time. We also compute the non-zero mode contributions which give consistent corrections to the leading Lyapunov exponents from the zero modes.

SYK Models and SYK-like Tensor Models with Global Symmetry

In this paper, we study an SYK model and an SYK-like tensor model with global symmetry. First, we study the large $N$ expansion of the bi-local collective action for the SYK model with manifest global symmetry. We show that the global symmetry is enhanced to a local symmetry at strong coupling limit, and the corresponding symmetry algebra is the Kac-Moody algebra. The emergent local symmetry together with the emergent reparametrization is spontaneously and explicit broken. This leads to a low energy effective action. We evaluate four point functions, and obtain spectrum of our model. We derive the low energy effective action and analyze the chaotic behavior of the four point functions. We also consider the recent 3D gravity conjecture for our model. We also introduce an SYK-like tensor model with global symmetry. We first study chaotic behavior of four point functions in various channels for the rank-3 case, and generalize this into a rank-$(q-1)$ tensor model.

Supersymmetric SYK Model: Bi-local Collective Superfield/Supermatrix Formulation

We discuss the bi-local collective theory for the $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SUSY SYK) models. We construct a bi-local superspace, and formulate the bi-local collective superfield theory of the one-dimensional SUSY vector model. The bi-local collective theory provides systematic analysis of the SUSY SYK models. We find that this bi-local collective theory naturally leads to supermatrix formulation in the bi-local superspace. This supermatrix formulation drastically simplifies the analysis of the SUSY SYK models. We also study $\mathcal{N}=1$ bi-local superconformal generators in the supermatrix formulation, and find the eigenvectors of teh superconformal Casimir. We diagonalize the quadratic action in large $N$ expansion.

SYK-like Tensor Models on the Lattice

We study large $N$ tensor models on the lattice without disorder. We introduce techniques which can be applied to a wide class of models, and illustrate it by studying some specific rank-3 tensor models. In particular, we study Klebanov-Tarnopolsky model on lattice, Gurau-Witten model (by treating it as a tensor model on four sites) and also a new model which interpolates between these two models. In each model, we evaluate various four point functions at large $N$ and strong coupling, and discuss their spectrum and long time behaviors. We find similarities as well as differences from SYK model. We also generalize our analysis to rank-$D$ tensor models where we obtain analogous results as $D=3$ case for the four point functions which we computed. For $D>5$, we are able to compute the next-to-subleading ${1 \over N}$ corrections for a specific four point function.

Bi-Local Holography in the SYK Model

We discuss large $N$ rules of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and the bi-local representation of holography of this theory. This is done by establishing $1/N$ Feynman rules in terms of bi-local propagators and vertices, which can be evaluated following the recent procedure of Polchinski and Rosenhaus. These rules can be interpreted as Witten type diagrams of the dual AdS theory, which we are able to define at IR fixed point and off.

Bulk from Bi-locals in Thermo Field CFT

We study the Large $N$ dynamics of the $O(N)$ field theory in the Thermo field dynamics approach. The question of recovering the high temperature phase and the corresponding $O(N)$ gauging is clarified. Through the associated bi-local representation we discuss the emergent bulk space-time and construction of (Higher spin) fields. We note the presence of `evanescent' modes in this construction and also the mixing of spins at finite temperature.

$S_N$ Orbifolds and String Interactions

We study interacting features of $S_N$ Orbifold CFTs. Concentrating on characters (associated with $S_N$ Orbifold primaries) we first formulate a novel procedure for evaluating them through $GL(\infty)_+$ tracing. The result is a polynomial formula which we show gives results equivalent to those found by Bantay. From this we deduce a hierarchy of commuting Hamiltonians featuring locality in the induced space, and nonlinear string-type interactions.
