Invariant-mass distribution of cc-bar in Upsilon(1S) -> cc-bar + X

We calculate the invariant-mass distribution for the cc-bar pair produced in the inclusive Upsilon(1S) decay based on the color-singlet mechanism of the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics factorization approach at leading order in the bottom-quark velocity v_b in the meson rest frame. As the short-distance processes, we consider bb-bar -> g^*gg followed by g^* -> cc-bar and bb-bar -> gamma^* -> cc-bar at leading order in the strong coupling. The invariant-mass distribution of the bb-bar -> cc-bar gg contribution has a sharp peak just above the threshold and that of the bb-bar -> gamma^* -> cc-bar channel is concentrated at the maximally allowed kinematic end point. We predict that Gamma[Upsilon(1S) -> cc-bar+X]/Gamma[Upsilon(1S)->light hadrons] = 0.065 alpha_s, which is smaller than a previous result by about 20%.

Cornell Potential Parameters for S-wave Heavy Quarkonia

We compute derived quantities for various values of the model parameter of the Cornell potential model for the S-wave heavy quarkonia with radial quantum numbers n=1, 2, and 3. Our results can be used to determine leading and relative-order-v^2 nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics matrix elements for S-wave charmonia and bottomonia such as psi(2S), eta_c(2S), and Upsilon(nS) for n=1, 2, and 3. These matrix elements will be essential ingredients for resumming relativistic corrections to processes involving those S-wave heavy quarkonium states.

Inclusive Charm Production in Upsilon(nS) Decay

Based on the NRQCD factorization formalism, we calculate the inclusive charm production rate in Upsilon(nS) decay at leading order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s and the relative velocity v of the b quark in the quarkonium rest frame. The branching fractions for Upsilon(nS) to charm for n=1, 2, and 3 are all around 7-9%. About 60% of the branching fraction into charm is from annihilation of the color-singlet bb-bar pair into gamma^* -> cc-bar. Most of the remaining branching fraction is from annihilation of the color-singlet bb-bar pair decaying into cc-bar gg. We also compute the momentum distributions of the charm quark and charmed hadrons in the decays. The virtual-photon contribution to the charm quark momentum distribution is concentrated at the end point while the cc-bar gg contribution is broad. The momentum distributions for charmed hadrons are obtained by convolving the charm-quark momentum distribution with charm fragmentation functions. This makes the momentum distributions for charmed hadrons softer than that for the charm quark. This effect is particularly significant in the virtual-photon contribution.

Inclusive Charm Production in chi_b Decays

We calculate the inclusive decay rate of the spin-triplet bottomonium states chi_{bJ} into charm hadrons, including the leading-order color-singlet and color-octet bb-bar annihilation mechanisms. We also calculate the momentum distribution of the charm quark from the decay of chi_{bJ}. The infrared divergences from the color-singlet process bb-bar -> cc-bar g are factored into the probability density at the origin for a bb-bar pair in a color-octet state. That probability density can be determined phenomenologically from the fraction of decays of chi_{bJ} that include charm hadrons. It can then be used to predict the partial widths into light hadrons for all four states in the P-wave bottomonium multiplet.

Weakly-bound Hadronic Molecule near a 3-body Threshold

The X(3872) seems to be a loosely-bound hadronic molecule whose constituents are two charm mesons. A novel feature of this molecule is that the mass difference of the constituents is close to the mass of a lighter meson that can be exchanged between them, namely the pion. We analyze this feature in a simple model with spin-0 mesons only. Various observables are calculated to next-to-leading order in the interaction strength of the exchanged meson. Renormalization requires summing a geometric series of next-to-leading order corrections. The dependence of observables on the ultraviolet cutoff can be removed by renormalizations of the mass of the heaviest meson, the coupling constant for the contact interaction between the heavy mesons, and short-distance coefficients in the operator product expansion. The next-to-leading order correction has an unphysical infrared divergence at the threshold of the two heavier mesons that can be eliminated by a further resummation that takes into account the nonzero width of the heaviest meson.

Reconciling the light-cone and nonrelativistic QCD approaches to calculating e+ e- -> J/psi + eta_c

It has been suggested in Ref. [A. E. Bondar and V. L. Chernyak, Phys. Lett. B 612, 215 (2005)] that the disagreement between theoretical calculations and experimental observations for the rate for the process e+ e- -> J/psi + eta_c at the B factories might be resolved by using the light-cone method to take into account the relative momentum of the heavy-quark and antiquark in the quarkonia. The light-cone result for the production cross section in Ref. [A. E. Bondar and V. L. Chernyak, Phys. Lett. B 612, 215 (2005)] is almost an order of magnitude larger than existing NRQCD factorization results. We investigate this apparent theoretical discrepancy. We compute light-cone distribution functions by making use of quarkonium wave functions from the Cornell potential model. Our light-cone distribution functions are similar in shape to those of Ref. [A. E. Bondar and V. L. Chernyak, Phys. Lett. B 612, 215 (2005)] and yield a similar cross section. However, when we subtract parts of the light-cone distribution functions that correspond to corrections of relative-order alpha_s in the NRQCD approach, we find that the cross section decreases by about a factor of three. When we set certain renormalization factors Z_i in the light-cone calculation equal to unity, we find a further reduction in the cross section of about a factor of two. The resulting light-cone cross section is similar in magnitude to the NRQCD factorization cross sections and shows only a modest enhancement over the light-cone cross section in which the relative momentum of the heavy-quark and antiquark is neglected.

Exclusive Two-Vector-Meson Production from e^+ e^- Annihilation

The exclusive production of pairs of vector mesons with J^{PC} = 1^{--} in e^+ e^- collisions can proceed through e^+ e^- annihilation into two virtual photons. At energies much greater than the meson masses, the cross section is dominated by the independent fragmentation of the virtual photons into the vector mesons. The fragmentation approximation is used to calculate the cross sections and angular distributions for pairs of vector mesons that can be produced at the B factories. The predicted cross sections for rho^0 + rho^0 and rho^0 + phi production agree with recent measurements by the BaBar Collaboration. For the production of two charmonium vector mesons, the nonfragmentation corrections to the cross sections are calculated by using the NRQCD factorization formalism. The predicted cross sections for J/psi + J/psi and J/psi + psi(2S) production are compatible with upper limits set by the Belle Collaboration.

Potential-model calculation of an order-v^2 NRQCD matrix element

We present two methods for computing dimensionally-regulated NRQCD heavy-quarkonium matrix elements that are related to the second derivative of the heavy-quarkonium wave function at the origin. The first method makes use of a hard-cutoff regulator as an intermediate step and requires knowledge only of the heavy-quarkonium wave function. It involves a significant cancellation that is an obstacle to achieving high numerical accuracy. The second method is more direct and yields a result that is identical to the Gremm-Kapustin relation, but it is limited to use in potential models. It can be generalized to the computation of matrix elements of higher order in the heavy-quark velocity and can be used to resum the contributions to decay and production rates that are associated with those matrix elements. We apply these methods to the Cornell potential model and compute a matrix element for the J/psi state that appears in the leading relativistic correction to the production and decay of that state through the color-singlet quark-antiquark channel.

Exclusive Double-Charmonium Production from e^+ e^- Annihilation into Two Virtual Photons

We calculate the contributions from QED processes involving two virtual photons to the cross sections for e^+ e^- annihilation into two charmonium states with the same C-parity. Generically, the cross sections are three orders of magnitude smaller than those for charmonia with opposite C-parity because they are suppressed by a factor of alpha^2/alpha_s^2. However, if both charmonia have quantum numbers J^{PC} = 1^{--}, then there is a contribution to the cross section that involves the fragmentation of each photon into a charmonium. The fragmentation contribution is enhanced by powers of E_{beam}/m_c, the ratio of the beam energy to the charm-quark mass, and this enhancement can compensate for the suppression factor that is associated with the coupling constants. In particular, the predicted cross section for J/psi + J/psi at the B factories is larger than that for J/psi + eta_c.

e^+ e^- Annihilation into J/psi + J/psi

Recent measurements by the Belle Collaboration of the exclusive production of two charmonia in e^+ e^- annihilation differ substantially from theoretical predictions. We suggest that a significant part of the discrepancy can be explained by the process e^+ e^- -> J/psi + J/psi. Because the J/psi + J/psi production process can proceed through fragmentation of two virtual photons into two cc-bar pairs, its cross section may be larger than that for J/psi +eta_c by about a factor 1.8, in spite of a suppression factor alpha^2/alpha_s^2 that is associated with the QED and QCD coupling constants.

Exclusive Double-Charmonium Production from e^+ e^- Annihilation into a Virtual Photon

We calculate the exclusive cross sections for e^+ e^- annihilation into two charmonium states through a virtual photon. Purely electromagnetic contributions are surprisingly large, changing the cross sections by as much as 21%. The predicted cross section for J/psi + eta_c is about an order of magnitude smaller than a recent measurement by the BELLE Collaboration, although part of the discrepancy can be attributed to large relativistic corrections. The cross sections for S-wave + P-wave, P-wave + P-wave, and S-wave + D-wave charmonium states are also calculated. It may be possible to discover the D-wave state eta_{c2}(1D) at the B factories through the mode J/psi+η_{c2}, whose cross section is predicted to be about a factor of 10 smaller than J/psi + eta_c.

Inclusive Production of Four Charm Hadrons at B-Factories

Measurements by the Belle Collaboration of the exclusive J/psi + eta_c and inclusive J/psi +cc-bar+X productions in e^+ e^- annihilation differ substantially from theoretical predictions based on the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach. In order to test if such a discrepancy is originated from the large perturbative corrections to the hard-scattering amplitude, we study inclusive production of four charm hadrons in e^+e^- annihilation at B factories.

This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.

Spin correlations and velocity-scaling in color-octet NRQCD matrix elements

We compute spin-dependent decay matrix elements for S-wave charmonium and bottomonium in lattice nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD). Particular emphasis is placed upon the color-octet matrix elements, since the corresponding production matrix elements are expected to appear in the dominant contributions to the production cross sections at large transverse momenta. We use three slightly different versions of the heavy-quark lattice Green's functions in order to minimize the contributions that scale as powers of the ultraviolet cutoff. The lattice matrix elements that we calculate obey the hierarchy that is suggested by the velocity-scaling rules of NRQCD.

Comparison of the color-evaporation model and the NRQCD factorization approach in charmonium production

We compare the color-evaporation model (CEM) and nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization predictions for inclusive quarkonium production. Using the NRQCD factorization formulas for quarkonium production and for perturbative QQ-bar production, we deduce relationships that are implied by the CEM between the nonperturbative NRQCD matrix elements that appear in the factorization formula for quarkonium production. These relationships are at odds with the phenomenological values of the matrix elements that have been extracted from the Tevatron data for charmonium production at large transverse momentum. A direct comparison of the CEM and NRQCD factorization predictions with the CDF charmonium production data reveals that the CEM fits to the data are generally unsatisfactory, while the NRQCD factorization fits are generally compatible with the data. The inclusion of k_T smearing improves the CEM fits substantially, but significant incompatibilities remain. The NRQCD factorization fits to the chi_c data indicate that multiple gluon radiation is an essential ingredient in obtaining the correct shape of the cross section as a function of p_T.

Color-evaporation-model calculation of e^+ e^- -> J/psi+cc-bar+X at root-s=10.6 GeV

Measurements by the Belle Collaboration of the cross section for inclusive J/psi production in e^+e^- annihilation have been a serious challenge to current heavy-quarkonium theory. Especially, the measured cross sections for exclusive J/psi+eta_c and inclusive J/psi+cc-bar+X differ from nonrelativistic QCD predictions by an order of magnitude. In order to check if other available alternative theory can resolve such a large discrepancy, we calculate the cross section for inclusive J/psi+cc-bar+X based on the color-evaporation model. As a phenomenological model, the color-evaporation model is still employed to predict cross sections for inclusive quarkonium production in various processes. Our results show that the color-evaporation-model prediction is even smaller than the nonrelativistic QCD prediction by an order of magnitude. The resultant color-evaporation-model prediction for J/psi+cc-bar+X fraction in the inclusive J/psi production cross section is 0.049, while the empirical value measured by the Belle Collaboration is 0.82.

Next-to-leading order Calculation of a Fragmentation Function in a Light-Cone Gauge

The short-distance coefficients for the color-octet ^3S_1 term in the fragmentation function for a gluon to split into polarized heavy quarkonium states are re-calculated to order alpha_s^2. The light-cone gauge remarkably simplifies the calculation by eliminating many Feynman diagrams at the expense of introducing spurious poles in loop integrals. We do not use any conventional prescriptions for spurious pole. Instead, we only use gauge invariance with the aid of Collins-Soper definition of the fragmentation function. Our result agrees with a previous calculation of Braaten and Lee in the Feynman gauge, but disagrees with another previous calculation.
