Lightweight Soft X-ray Imager (LSXI) with glass-based coded mask

The coded mask technique has been widely used in X-ray and Gamma-ray imagers, especially in space astronomy. However, the traditional design of coded mask imagers usually has problems with large size and heavy weight. Here, we propose a novel design for a coded mask imager made of glass based on microchannel plate (MCP) technology, making it lightweight (within 1 kg), compact, and self-supporting, which is very suitable for space exploration satellites. The design is initially demonstrated by reconstructing encoded patterns from measurements at the X-ray beamline. Monte Carlo simulations of the module integrated into a 6U CubeSat are conducted to assess its in-orbit detector performance, including sensitivity and source localization.

Development of a time calibration system for the KLM upgrade in the Belle II experiment

To meet the stringent time calibration requirements for the Belle II experiment upgrade, particularly for its large-size KL and Muon Detector comprising tens of thousands of scintillator channels with time resolutions better than 100 ps, we developed a compact and high-speed time calibration system. The system utilizes a laser diode as its light source, integrated with a fast pulse laser drive circuit that employs high-speed switching GaN FETs and gate drivers. A prototype was constructed and rigorously evaluated using scintillators, achieving timing resolutions of about 13 ps for a single calibration channel. Furthermore, internal deviations among calibration channels were analyzed, with most measurements remaining within 250 ps. These results highlight the system's precision, scalability, and suitability for large-scale particle physics experiments.

From Clicks to Preference: A Multi-stage Alignment Framework for Generative Query Suggestion in Conversational System

Generative query suggestion using large language models offers a powerful way to enhance conversational systems, but aligning outputs with nuanced user preferences remains a critical challenge. To address this, we introduce a multi-stage framework designed for progressive alignment between the generation policy and user intent. Our pipeline begins with prompt engineering as a cold-start strategy, followed by the Supervised Fine-Tuning stage, in which we introduce a distillation method on click logs to create a robust foundational model. To better model user preferences while capturing their inherent uncertainty, we develop a Gaussian Reward Model (GaRM) that represents user preferences as probability distributions rather than point estimates. Finally, we employ reinforcement learning to align the generation policy with these preferences, guided by a composite reward function that integrates GaRM with auxiliary heuristics to mitigate reward hacking. To maintain training stability, this process is enhanced by a novel out-of-distribution regularization method and a two-stage reward fusion technique. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework significantly outperforms baselines on both automatic and human evaluations and yields a 34\% relative increase in user engagement as measured by click-through rate in live A/B tests.

R&D of KLM Upgrade for Direct Measurement of Neutral Hadron Momentum via Time-of-Flight in Belle II

Accurate momentum determination of a neutral hadron, such as a KL meson or a neutron, remains a significant challenge in particle physics and nuclear physics experiments. The Belle II experiment presents an opportunity to address this challenge through an upgrade incorporating Time-of-Flight (TOF) capability for its large KL and Muon Detector (KLM). We investigate the feasibility of momentum determination via TOF measurement. To achieve high time resolution for the KLM upgrade, we conduct research and development of cost-effective plastic scintillators in collaboration with GaoNengKeDi Company, and technology utilizing silicon photomultipliers(SiPMs) arrays. A bulk attenuation length of 120 \pm 7 cm has been achieved with a 135 cm-long sample, along with a time resolution of 70 \pm 7 ps at its midpoint. A 50 cm-long scintillator demonstrates an exceptional time resolution of 47 \pm 2 ps. These results highlight the potential of the proposed technology for improving neutral hadron momentum measurements in an upgraded Belle II KLM detector.

ImageRef-VL: Enabling Contextual Image Referencing in Vision-Language Models

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in understanding multimodal inputs and have been widely integrated into Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) based conversational systems. While current VLM-powered chatbots can provide textual source references in their responses, they exhibit significant limitations in referencing contextually relevant images during conversations. In this paper, we introduce Contextual Image Reference -- the ability to appropriately reference relevant images from retrieval documents based on conversation context -- and systematically investigate VLMs' capability in this aspect. We conduct the first evaluation for contextual image referencing, comprising a dedicated testing dataset and evaluation metrics. Furthermore, we propose ImageRef-VL, a method that significantly enhances open-source VLMs' image referencing capabilities through instruction fine-tuning on a large-scale, manually curated multimodal conversation dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that ImageRef-VL not only outperforms proprietary models but also achieves an 88% performance improvement over state-of-the-art open-source VLMs in contextual image referencing tasks. Alignment and measurement of the magnetic field for the BESIII muon counter

Based on cosmic ray events without a magnetic field taken with the BESIII detector during the summer shutdown of BEPCII in 2012 and di-muon events from a data sample taken at center-of-mass energy of 3.686 GeV in 2009, we compare the coordinates of hits registered in the BESIII muon counter with the expected interaction point extrapolated from reconstructed tracks from the inner tracking system in the absence of a magnetic field. By minimizing the difference, we align the muon counter with the inner tracking system. Moreover, the strength of the magnetic field in the muon counter is measured for the first time with di-muon events from data taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.686~GeV. After the alignment and the magnetic field strength measurement, the offsets in the reconstructed hit positions for muon tracks are reduced, which improves the muon identification. The alignment and magnetic field strength measurement have been adopted in the latest version of the BESIII offline software system. This addition to the software reduces the systematic uncertainty for the physics analysis in cases where the muon counter information is used.
