On indefinite integral ternary quadratic forms

We resolve two problems pertaining to indefinite integral ternary quadratic forms, one highlighted by Margulis and the other initiated by Serre, both from 1990. To do so we develop tools for dealing with high ramification in problems involving sums over classes of such forms weighted by their diophantine invariants.

On periodic orbits of polynomial maps

We prove the existence of an effective universal upper bound for the order of any integral periodic orbit of any integral algebraic dynamical system in a fixed ambient space. Using this, we demonstrate the decidability of periodicity in arbitrary finitely generated algebraic dynamical systems over fields of characteristic zero.

On finite categories of algebraic varieties

We prove that the finiteness of a finitely generated category of irreducible algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic zero is decidable. We also obtain a Burnside finiteness criterion for such a category, with applications to algebraic dynamical systems of several maps.

Short words of infinite order

Given an infinite linear group with a finite set of generators, we show that the shortest word length of an element of infinite order has an upper bound that depends only on the number of generators and the degree. This provides a quantification of the Burnside problem for linear groups. In degree two, an explicit bound is computed using an exceptional connection to reflection groups.

Surface group representations in ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb C})$ with finite mapping class orbits

Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.

Surfaces, braids, Stokes matrices, and points on spheres

Moduli spaces of points on $n$-spheres carry natural actions of braid groups. For $n=0$, $1$, and $3$, we prove that these symmetries extend to actions of mapping class groups of positive genus surfaces, by establishing exceptional isomorphisms with certain moduli of local systems. This relies on the existence of group structure for spheres in these dimensions. We also use the connection to demonstrate that the space of rank 4 Stokes matrices with fixed Coxeter invariant of nonzero discriminant contains only finitely many integral braid group orbits.

Arithmetic of curves on moduli of local systems

We investigate the arithmetic of algebraic curves on coarse moduli spaces for special linear rank two local systems on surfaces with fixed boundary traces. We prove a structure theorem for morphisms from the affine line into the moduli space. We show that the set of integral points on any nondegenerate algebraic curve on the moduli space can be effectively determined.

Nonlinear descent on moduli of local systems

We establish a structure theorem for the integral points on moduli of special linear rank two local systems over surfaces, using mapping class group descent and boundedness results for systoles of local systems.

Global geometry on moduli of local systems for surfaces with boundary

We show that every coarse moduli space, parametrizing complex special linear rank two local systems with fixed boundary traces on a surface with nonempty boundary, is log Calabi-Yau in that it has a normal projective compactification with trivial log canonical divisor. We connect this to a novel symmetry of generating series for counts of essential multicurves on the surface.
