Typeface Completion with Generative Adversarial Networks

The mood of a text and the intention of the writer can be reflected in the typeface. However, in designing a typeface, it is difficult to keep the style of various characters consistent, especially for languages with lots of morphological variations such as Chinese. In this paper, we propose a Typeface Completion Network (TCN) which takes one character as an input, and automatically completes the entire set of characters in the same style as the input characters. Unlike existing models proposed for image-to-image translation, TCN embeds a character image into two separate vectors representing typeface and content. Combined with a reconstruction loss from the latent space, and with other various losses, TCN overcomes the inherent difficulty in designing a typeface. Also, compared to previous image-to-image translation models, TCN generates high quality character images of the same typeface with a much smaller number of model parameters. We validate our proposed model on the Chinese and English character datasets, which is paired data, and the CelebA dataset, which is unpaired data. In these datasets, TCN outperforms recently proposed state-of-the-art models for image-to-image translation. The source code of our model is available at https://github.com/yongqyu/TCN.

Spin-orbit coupled bosons in one dimension: emergent gauge field and Lifshitz transition

In the presence of strong spin-independent interactions and spin-orbit coupling, we show that the spinor Bose liquid confined to one spatial dimension undergoes an interaction- or density-tuned quantum phase transition similar to one theoretically proposed for itinerant magnetic solid-state systems. The order parameter describes broken $Z_2$ inversion symmetry, with the ordered phase accompanied by non-vanishing momentum which is generated by fluctuations of an emergent dynamical gauge field at the phase transition. This quantum phase transition has dynamical critical exponent $z \simeq 2$, typical of a Lifshitz transition, but is described by a nontrivial interacting fixed point. From direct numerical simulation of the microscopic model, we extract previously unknown critical exponents for this fixed point. Our model describes a realistic situation of 1D ultracold atoms with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling, establishing this system as a platform for studying exotic critical behavior of the Hertz-Millis type.

Chiral supercurrent through a quantum Hall weak link

We use a microscopic model to calculate properties of the supercurrent carried by chiral edge states of a quantum Hall weak link. This "chiral" supercurrent is qualitatively distinct from the usual Josephson supercurrent in that it cannot be mediated by a single edge alone, i.e., both right and left going edges are needed. Moreover, chiral supercurrent was previously shown to obey an unusual current-phase relation with period $2 ϕ_0=h/e$, which is twice as large as the period of conventional Josephson junctions. We show that the "chiral" nature of this supercurrent is sharply defined, and is robust to interactions to infinite order in perturbation theory. We compare our results with recent experimental findings of Amet et al [Science, 352(6288)] and find that quantitative agreement in magnitude of the supercurrent can be attained by making reasonable but critical assumptions about the superconductor quantum Hall interface.

Electronic quasiparticles in the quantum dimer model: density matrix renormalization group results

We study a recently proposed quantum dimer model for the pseudogap metal state of the cuprates. The model contains bosonic dimers, representing a spin-singlet valence bond between a pair of electrons, and fermionic dimers, representing a quasiparticle with spin-$1/2$ and charge $+e$. By density matrix renormalization group calculations on a long but finite cylinder, we obtain the ground-state density distribution of the fermionic dimers for a number of different total densities. From the Friedel oscillations at open boundaries, we deduce that the Fermi surface consists of small hole pockets near $(π/2, π/2)$, and this feature persists up to a doping density of $1/16$. We also compute the entanglement entropy and find that it closely matches the sum of the entanglement entropies of a critical boson and a low density of free fermions. Our results support the existence of a fractionalized Fermi liquid in this model.

Deconfined criticality in bilayer graphene

We propose that bilayer graphene can provide an experimental realization of deconfined criticality. Current experiments indicate the presence of Néel order in the presence of a moderate magnetic field. The Néel order can be destabilized by application of a transverse electric field. The resulting electric field induced state is likely to have valence bond solid order, and the transition can acquire the emergent fractionalized and gauge excitations of deconfined criticality.

Quantum criticality of reconstructing Fermi surfaces in antiferromagnetic metals

We present a functional renormalization group analysis of a quantum critical point in two-dimensional metals involving Fermi surface reconstruction due to the onset of spin-density wave order. Its critical theory is controlled by a fixed point in which the order parameter and fermionic quasiparticles are strongly coupled and acquire spectral functions with a common dynamic critical exponent. We obtain results for critical exponents and for the variation in the quasiparticle spectral weight around the Fermi surface. Our analysis is implemented on a two-band variant of the spin-fermion model which will allow comparison with sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

An Ideal Mean-Field Transition in a Modulated Cold Atom System

We show that an atomic system in a periodically modulated optical trap displays an ideal mean-field symmetry-breaking transition. The symmetry is broken with respect to time translation by the modulation period. The transition is due to the interplay of the long-range interatomic interaction and nonequilibrium fluctuations. The observed critical dynamics, including anomalous fluctuations in the symmetry broken phase, are fully described by the proposed microscopic theory.
