Multi-Group Multicasting Systems Using Multiple RISs

In this paper, practical utilization of multiple distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are able to conduct group-specific operations, for multi-group multicasting systems is investigated. To tackle the inter-group interference issue in the multi-group multicasting systems, the block diagonalization (BD)-based beamforming is considered first. Without any inter-group interference after the BD operation, the multiple distributed RISs are operated to maximize the minimum rate for each group. Since the computational complexity of the BD-based beamforming can be too high, a multicasting tailored zero-forcing (MTZF) beamforming technique is proposed to efficiently suppress the inter-group interference, and the novel design for the multiple RISs that makes up for the inevitable loss of MTZF beamforming is also described. Effective closed-form solutions for the loss minimizing RIS operations are obtained with basic linear operations, making the proposed MTZF beamforming-based RIS design highly practical. Numerical results show that the BD-based approach has ability to achieve high sum-rate, but it is useful only when the base station deploys large antenna arrays. Even with the small number of antennas, the MTZF beamforming-based approach outperforms the other schemes in terms of the sum-rate while the technique requires low computational complexity. The results also prove that the proposed techniques can work with the minimum rate requirement for each group.

Joint Downlink and Uplink Optimization for RIS-Aided FDD MIMO Communication Systems

This paper investigates reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided frequency division duplexing (FDD) communication systems. Since the downlink and uplink signals are simultaneously transmitted in FDD, the phase shifts at the RIS should be designed to support both transmissions. Considering a single-user multiple-input multiple-output system, we formulate a weighted sum-rate maximization problem to jointly maximize the downlink and uplink system performance. To tackle the non-convex optimization problem, we adopt an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm, in which two phase shift optimization techniques are developed to handle the unit-modulus constraints induced by the reflection coefficients at the RIS. The first technique exploits the manifold optimization-based algorithm, while the second uses a lower-complexity AO approach. Numerical results verify that the proposed techniques rapidly converge to local optima and significantly improve the overall system performance compared to existing benchmark schemes.

Modeling and Analysis of GEO Satellite Networks

The extensive coverage offered by satellites makes them effective in enhancing service continuity for users on dynamic airborne and maritime platforms, such as airplanes and ships. In particular, geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) satellites ensure stable connectivity for terrestrial users due to their stationary characteristics when observed from Earth. This paper introduces a novel approach to model and analyze GEO satellite networks using stochastic geometry. We model the distribution of GEO satellites in the geostationary orbit according to a binomial point process (BPP) and examine satellite visibility depending on the terminal's latitude. Then, we identify potential distribution cases for GEO satellites and derive case probabilities based on the properties of the BPP. We also obtain the distance distributions between the terminal and GEO satellites and derive the coverage probability of the network. We further approximate the derived expressions using the Poisson limit theorem. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to validate the analytical findings, demonstrating a strong alignment between the analyses and simulations. The simplified analytical results can be used to estimate the coverage performance of GEO satellite networks by effectively modeling the positions of GEO satellites.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for 6G Networks: Ten Promising Scenarios and Applications

In the upcoming 6G era, multiple access (MA) will play an essential role in achieving high throughput performances required in a wide range of wireless applications. Since MA and interference management are closely related issues, the conventional MA techniques are limited in that they cannot provide near-optimal performance in universal interference regimes. Recently, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been gaining much attention. RSMA splits an individual message into two parts: a common part, decodable by every user, and a private part, decodable only by the intended user. Each user first decodes the common message and then decodes its private message by applying successive interference cancellation (SIC). By doing so, RSMA not only embraces the existing MA techniques as special cases but also provides significant performance gains by efficiently mitigating inter-user interference in a broad range of interference regimes. In this article, we first present the theoretical foundation of RSMA. Subsequently, we put forth four key benefits of RSMA: spectral efficiency, robustness, scalability, and flexibility. Upon this, we describe how RSMA can enable ten promising scenarios and applications along with future research directions to pave the way for 6G.

Satellite Clusters Flying in Formation: Orbital Configuration-Dependent Performance Analyses

This paper considers a downlink satellite communication system where a satellite cluster, i.e., a satellite swarm consisting of one leader and multiple follower satellites, serves a ground terminal. The satellites in the cluster form either a linear or circular formation moving in a group and cooperatively send their signals by maximum ratio transmission precoding. We first conduct a coordinate transformation to effectively capture the relative positions of satellites in the cluster. Next, we derive an exact expression for the orbital configuration-dependent outage probability under the Nakagami fading by using the distribution of the sum of independent Gamma random variables. In addition, we obtain a simpler approximated expression for the outage probability with the help of second-order moment-matching. We also analyze asymptotic behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime and the diversity order of the outage performance. Finally, we verify the analytical results through Monte Carlo simulations. Our analytical results provide the performance of satellite cluster-based communication systems based on specific orbital configurations, which can be used to design reliable satellite clusters in terms of cluster size, formation, and orbits.

Bayesian Channel Estimation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided mmWave Massive MIMO Systems With Semi-Passive Elements

In this paper, we propose a Bayesian channel estimator for intelligent reflecting surface-aided (IRS-aided) millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with semi-passive elements that can receive the signal in the active sensing mode. Ultimately, our goal is to minimize the channel estimation error using the received signal at the base station and additional information acquired from a small number of active sensors at the IRS. Unlike recent works on channel estimation with semi-passive elements that require both uplink and downlink training signals to estimate the UE-IRS and IRS-BS links, we only use uplink training signals to estimate all the links. To compute the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimates of all the links, we propose a novel variational inference-sparse Bayesian learning (VI-SBL) channel estimator that performs approximate posterior inference on the channel using VI with the mean-field approximation under the SBL framework. The simulation results show that VI-SBL outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines for IRS with passive reflecting elements in terms of the channel estimation accuracy and training overhead. Furthermore, VI-SBL with semi-passive elements is shown to be more spectral- and energy-efficient than the baselines with passive reflecting elements.

WiThRay: A Versatile Ray-Tracing Simulator for Smart Wireless Environments

This paper presents the development and evaluation of WiThRay, a new wireless three-dimensional ray-tracing (RT) simulator. RT-based simulators are widely used for generating realistic channel data by combining RT methodology to get signal trajectories and electromagnetic (EM) equations, resulting in generalized channel impulse responses (CIRs). This paper first provides a comprehensive comparison on methodologies of existing RT-based simulators. We then introduce WiThRay, which can evaluate the performance of various wireless communication techniques such as channel estimation/tracking, beamforming, and localization in realistic EM wave propagation. WiThRay implements its own RT methodology, the bypassing on edge (BE) algorithm, that follows the Fermat's principle and has low computational complexity. The scattering ray calibration in WiThRay also provides a precise solution in the analysis of EM propagation. Different from most of the previous RT-based simulators, WiThRay incorporates reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which will be a key component of future wireless communications. We thoroughly show that the channel data from WiThRay match sufficiently well with the fundamental theory of wireless channels. The virtue of WiThRay lies in its feature of not making any assumption about the channel, like being slow/fast fading or frequency selective. A realistic wireless environment, which can be conveniently simulated via WiThRay, naturally defines the physical properties of the wireless channels. WiThRay is open to the public, and anyone can exploit this versatile simulator to develop and test their communications and signal processing techniques.

EMC2-Net: Joint Equalization and Modulation Classification based on Constellation Network

Modulation classification (MC) is the first step performed at the receiver side unless the modulation type is explicitly indicated by the transmitter. Machine learning techniques have been widely used for MC recently. In this paper, we propose a novel MC technique dubbed as Joint Equalization and Modulation Classification based on Constellation Network (EMC2-Net). Unlike prior works that considered the constellation points as an image, the proposed EMC2-Net directly uses a set of 2D constellation points to perform MC. In order to obtain clear and concrete constellation despite multipath fading channels, the proposed EMC2-Net consists of equalizer and classifier having separate and explainable roles via novel three-phase training and noise-curriculum pretraining. Numerical results with linear modulation types under different channel models show that the proposed EMC2-Net achieves the performance of state-of-the-art MC techniques with significantly less complexity.

Channel Estimation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface with a few Active Elements

In this paper, a channel estimation technique for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user multiple-input single-output communication systems is proposed. By deploying a small number of active elements at the RIS, the RIS can receive and process the training signals. Through the partial channel state information (CSI) obtained from the active elements, the overall training overhead to estimate the entire channel can be dramatically reduced. To minimize the estimation complexity, the proposed technique is based on the linear combination of partial CSI, which only requires linear matrix operations. By exploiting the spatial correlation among the RIS elements, proper weights for the linear combination and normalization factors are developed. Numerical results show that the proposed technique outperforms other schemes using the active elements at the RIS in terms of the normalized mean squared error when the number of active elements is small, which is necessary to maintain the low cost and power consumption of RIS.

Satellite Clustering for Non-Terrestrial Networks: Concept, Architectures, and Applications

Recently, mega-constellations with a massive number of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites are being considered as a possible solution for providing global coverage due to relatively low latency and high throughput compared to geosynchronous orbit satellites. However, as the number of satellites and operators participating in the LEO constellation increases, inter-satellite interference will become more severe, which may yield marginal improvement or even decrement in network throughput. In this article, we introduce the concept of satellite clusters that can enhance network performance through satellites' cooperative transmissions. The characteristics, formation types, and transmission schemes for the satellite clusters are highlighted. Simulation results evaluate the impact of clustering from coverage and capacity perspectives, showing that when the number of satellites is large, the performance of clustered networks outperforms the unclustered ones. The viable network architectures of the satellite cluster are proposed based on the 3GPP standard. Finally, the future applications of clustered satellite networks are discussed.

IRS-Aided Energy Efficient UAV Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have steadily gained attention to overcome the harsh propagation loss and blockage issue of millimeter-wave communication. However, UAV communication systems suffer from energy consumption, which limits the flying time of UAVs. In this paper, we propose several UAV energy consumption minimization techniques through the aid of multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). In specific, we introduce a tractable model to effectively capture the characteristics of multiple IRSs and multiple user equipments (UEs). Then, we derive a closed form expression for the UE achievable rate, resulting in tractable optimization problems. Accordingly, we effectively solve the optimization problems by adopting the successive convex approximation technique. To compensate for the high complexity of the optimization problems, we propose a low complexity algorithm that has marginal performance loss. In the numerical results, we show that the proposed algorithms can save UAV energy consumption significantly compared to the benchmark with no IRSs, justifying that exploiting the IRSs is indeed favorable to UAV energy consumption minimization.

Massive MIMO Channel Prediction Via Meta-Learning and Deep Denoising: Is a Small Dataset Enough?

Accurate channel knowledge is critical in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), which motivates the use of channel prediction. Machine learning techniques for channel prediction hold much promise, but current schemes are limited in their ability to adapt to changes in the environment because they require large training overheads. To accurately predict wireless channels for new environments with reduced training overhead, we propose a fast adaptive channel prediction technique based on a meta-learning algorithm for massive MIMO communications. We exploit the model-agnostic meta-learning (MAML) algorithm to achieve quick adaptation with a small amount of labeled data. Also, to improve the prediction accuracy, we adopt the denoising process for the training data by using deep image prior (DIP). Numerical results show that the proposed MAML-based channel predictor can improve the prediction accuracy with only a few fine-tuning samples. The DIP-based denoising process gives an additional gain in channel prediction, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio regimes.

Coverage Increase at THz Frequencies: A Cooperative Rate-Splitting Approach

Numerous studies claim that terahertz (THz) communication will be an essential piece of sixth-generation wireless communication systems. Its promising potential also comes with major challenges, in particular the reduced coverage due to harsh propagation loss, hardware constraints, and blockage vulnerability. To increase the coverage of THz communication, we revisit cooperative communication. We propose a new type of cooperative rate-splitting (CRS) called extraction-based CRS (eCRS). Furthermore, we explore two extreme cases of eCRS, namely, identical eCRS and distinct eCRS. To enable the proposed eCRS framework, we design a novel THz cooperative channel model by considering unique characteristics of THz communication. Through mathematical derivations and convex optimization techniques considering the THz cooperative channel model, we derive local optimal solutions for the two cases of eCRS and a global optimal closed form solution for a specific scenario. Finally, we propose a novel channel estimation technique that not only specifies the channel value, but also the time delay of the channel from each cooperating user equipment to fully utilize the THz cooperative channel. In simulation results, we verify the validity of the two cases of our proposed framework and channel estimation technique.

Massive MIMO Channel Prediction Using Machine Learning: Power of Domain Transformation

To compensate the loss from outdated channel state information in wideband massive multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems, channel prediction can be performed by leveraging the temporal correlation of wireless channels. Machine learning (ML)-based channel predictors for massive MIMO systems were designed recently; however, the time overhead to collect a large amount of training data directly affects the latency of the system. In this paper, we propose a novel ML-based channel prediction technique, which can reduce the time overhead to collect the training data by transforming the domain of channels from subcarrier to antenna in wideband massive MIMO systems. Numerical results show that the proposed technique can not only reduce the time overhead but also give additional performance gain compared to the ML-based channel prediction techniques without the domain transformation.

Radar Imaging Based on IEEE 802.11ad Waveform in V2I Communications

Since most of vehicular radar systems are already exploiting millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectra, it would become much more feasible to implement a joint radar and communication system by extending communication frequencies into the mmWave band. In this paper, an IEEE 802.11ad waveform-based radar imaging technique is proposed for vehicular settings. A roadside unit (RSU) transmits the IEEE 802.11ad waveform to a vehicle for communications while the RSU also listens to the echoes of transmitted waveform to perform inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. To obtain high-resolution images of the vehicle, the RSU needs to accurately estimate round-trip delays, Doppler shifts, and velocity of vehicle. The proposed ISAR imaging first estimates the round-trip delays using a good correlation property of Golay complementary sequences in the IEEE 802.11ad preamble. The Doppler shifts are then obtained using least square estimation from the echo signals and refined to compensate phase wrapping caused by phase rotation. The velocity of vehicle is determined using an equation of motion and the estimated Doppler shifts. Simulation results verify that the proposed technique is able to form high-resolution ISAR images from point scatterer models of realistic vehicular settings with different viewpoints. The proposed ISAR imaging technique can be used for various vehicular applications, e.g., traffic condition analyses or advanced collision warning systems.

Gridless Channel Estimation for MmWave Hybrid Massive MIMO Systems with Low-Resolution ADCs

This paper proposes the Newtonized fully corrective forward greedy selection-cross validation-based (NFCFGS-CV-based) channel estimator for millimeter (mmWave) hybrid massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The proposed NFCFGS algorithm is a gridless compressed sensing (CS) technique that combines the FCFGS and Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (NOMP) algorithms. In particular, NFCFGS performs single path estimation over the continuum at each iteration based on the previously estimated paths. The CV technique is adopted as an indicator of termination in the absence of the prior knowledge on the number of paths, which is a model validation technique that prevents overfitting.

Polar-Cap Codebook Design for MISO Rician Fading Channels with Limited Feedback

Most of the prior works on designing codebooks for limited feedback systems have not considered the presence of strong line-of-sight (LOS) channel component. This paper proposes the design of polar-cap codebook (PCC) for multipleinput single-output (MISO) limited feedback systems subject to Rician fading channels. The codewords of the designed PCC are adaptively constructed according to the instantaneous strength of the LOS channel component. Simulation results show that the codebook can significantly enhance the performance of transmit beamforming in terms of received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Hybrid Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

As communication systems that employ millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands must use large antenna arrays to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave signals, hybrid beamforming has been considered as an integral component of mmWave communications. Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been proposed as an innovative technology that can significantly improve the performance of mmWave communication systems through the use of low-cost passive reflecting elements. In this paper, we study IRS-aided mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with hybrid beamforming architectures. We first exploit the sparse-scattering structure and large dimension of mmWave channels to develop the joint design of IRS reflection matrix and hybrid beamformer for narrowband MIMO systems. Then, we generalize the proposed joint design to broadband MIMO systems with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation by leveraging the angular sparsity of frequency-selective mmWave channels. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint designs can significantly enhance the spectral efficiency of the systems of interest and achieve superior performance over the existing designs.
