Sommerfeld Enhancement in Spin-1 Electroweak Dark Matter

We study a renormalizable spin-1 electroweakly interacting dark matter (DM) model in which the DM particle is the neutral component of a $Z_2$-odd $\mathrm{SU(2)}_L$ triplet vector boson. The model predicts an additional $Z_2$-even heavy vector triplet, $W'^{\pm}$ and $Z'$, which is generically heavier than the DM particle and whose mass is closely related to the DM mass. Taking into account the Sommerfeld enhancement due to long-range electroweak interactions, we evaluate the thermal relic abundance of the spin-1 DM. We find that the observed relic abundance is reproduced through the freeze-out mechanism for DM masses ($m_V$) in the range $3.6~\mathrm{TeV} \lesssim m_V \lesssim 9.2~\mathrm{TeV}$ within a perturbative regime. A heavier DM mass is favored when the heavy vector boson mass approaches the DM mass, since annihilation processes into a heavy vector boson and a Standard Model particle significantly enhance the effective annihilation cross section. This behavior is distinctive from spin-0 and spin-$1/2$ electroweak DM scenarios, which typically predict a DM mass around $3~\mathrm{TeV}$. We further investigate indirect detection prospects and find that the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will probe the entire viable parameter region. In particular, for $m_V \gtrsim 7.5~\mathrm{TeV}$, the model predicts a characteristic double-peak gamma-ray signature: one peak arising from the unresolved $\gamma\gamma$ and $Z\gamma$ channels, and the other from the $Z'\gamma$ annihilation channel.

Full Three-Loop Electroweak Multiplet Contributions to the Electron Electric Dipole Moment

Experimental sensitivity to the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron has improved remarkably in recent years. Consequently, future prospects could probe new physics whose contribution to the electron EDM first arises at three-loop order. Additional SU(2)$_L$ multiplets with CP-violating Yukawa interactions, which contribute to the electron EDM at three-loop level, is one such testable new physics scenario. In this scenario, the electron EDM is radiatively induced from two contributions: the CP-odd trilinear $W$-boson coupling, called the electroweak-Weinberg operator, and the CP-odd dipole operator of electron. The former and the latter operators are generated at two-loop and three-loop levels, respectively, after integrating out the SU(2)$_L$ multiplets. Within the same models, according to an analysis based on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), we previously found that the contribution to the electron EDM from the electroweak-Weinberg operator can be probed in future experiments. However, the one-loop matching condition between the electron EDM and the electroweak-Weinberg operator does not receive a large logarithmic enhancement because the associated anomalous dimension is zero. The CP-odd dipole operator of the electron would contribute to the electron EDM at the same three-loop order as the contribution through the electroweak-Weinberg operator. In this paper, we directly calculate the electron EDM induced by the CP-violating Yukawa interactions of the SU(2)$_L$ multiplets at full three-loop level. A central result is that the full three-loop calculation is a factor of three larger than that of the electroweak-Weinberg operator alone.

Extension of SUSY SU(5) GUTs with Nelson-Barr models

In this paper we extend the supersymmetric SU(5) GUTs with the Nelson-Barr (NB) models. The NB models are a candidate for the solution of the strong CP problem. We show that the parameters in the CKM matrix are reproduced while the mass ratios of the down-type quarks and leptons in the second and third generations are explained in the minimal extension.

Two-loop corrections to QCD $\theta$ angle from evanescent operator in the BMHV scheme

We study the renormalization of the QCD $\theta$ angle at the two-loop level focusing on divergent and finite $CP$-violating contributions from evanescent operators, using dimensional regularization with the BMHV scheme. When one considers the Lagrangian in $d$-dimensional space-time instead of four dimensions in dimensional regularization, evanescent operators that break the chiral symmetry are induced. Consequently, $T$-odd and $P$-odd fermion loops in the BMHV scheme generate evanescent contributions to the QCD $\theta$ angle. We carefully classify the evanescent contributions into two types: one originating from the evanescent operators at the one-loop level and the other directly produced by two-loop calculations. We show that renormalization of the parameters in the BMHV scheme keeps removing those unphysical contributions to the QCD $\theta$ angle at any scale at the two-loop level. We also discuss how the rephasing invariance of the radiative correction to the QCD $\theta$ angle is realized in the BMHV scheme.

Impact of the Electroweak Weinberg Operator on the Electric Dipole Moment of Electron

Recent progresses in the measurements of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron using the paramagnetic atom or molecule are remarkable. In this paper, we calculate a contribution to the electron EDM at three-loop level, introducing the CP-violating Yukawa couplings of new SU(2)$_L$ multiplets. At two-loop level, the Yukawa interactions generate a CP-violating dimension-six operator, composed of three SU(2)$_L$ field strengths, called the electroweak Weinberg operator. Another one-loop diagram with the operator inserted induces the electron EDM. We find that even if new SU(2)$_L$ particles have masses around TeV-scale, the electron EDM may be larger than the Standard Model contribution to the paramagnetic atom or molecule EDMs. We also discuss the relation between the Barr-Zee diagram contribution at two-loop level and the three-loop one, assuming that the SM Higgs has new Yukawa interactions with the SU(2)$_L$ multiplets.

Closer look at the matching condition for radiative QCD $\theta$ parameter

In this paper, we scrutinize a radiatively generated QCD $\theta$ parameter at the two-loop level based on both full analytical loop functions with the Fock-Schwinger gauge method and the effective field theory approach, using simplified models. We observe that the radiatively generated $\theta$ parameters at the low energy scale precisely match between them. It provides validity to perturbative loop calculations of the QCD $\theta$ parameter with the Fock-Schwinger gauge method. Furthermore, it is also shown that the ordinary Fujikawa method for the radiative $\theta$ parameter by using $\bar\theta = - arg det M_q^{loop}$ does not cover all contributions in the simplified models. But, we also find that when there is a scale hierarchy in $CP$-violating sector, evaluation of the Fujikawa method is numerically sufficient. As an application, we calculate the radiative $\theta$ parameter at the two-loop level in a slightly extended Nelson-Barr model, where the spontaneous $CP$ violation occurs to solve the strong $CP$ problem. It is found a part of the radiative $\theta$ parameters cannot be described by the Fujikawa method.

Multipole vector dark matter below the GeV-scale

We consider electrically neutral complex vector particles $V$ below the GeV mass scale that, from a low energy perspective, couple to the photon via higher dimensional form factor interactions. We derive ensuing astrophysical constraints by considering the anomalous energy loss from the Sun, Horizontal Branch, and Red Giant stars as well as from SN1987A that arise from vector pair-production in these environments. Under the assumption that the dark states $V$ constitute dark matter, the bounds are then complemented by direct and indirect detection as well as cosmological limits. The relic density from freeze-out and freeze-in mechanisms is also computed. On the basis of a UV-complete model that realizes the considered effective couplings, we also discuss the naturalness of the constrained parameter space, and provide an analysis of the zero mass limit of $V$.

Novel loop-diagrammatic approach to QCD $\theta$ parameter and application to the left-right model

When the QCD axion is absent in full theory, the strong $CP$ problem has to be explained by an additional mechanism, e.g., the left-right symmetry. Even though tree-level QCD $\bar\theta$ parameter is restricted by the mechanism, radiative corrections to $\bar\theta$ are mostly generated, which leads to a dangerous neutron electric dipole moment (EDM). The ordinary method for calculating the radiative $\bar\theta$ utilizes an equation $\bar \theta= - \text{arg}\, \text{det}\, m_q^{\rm loop}$ based on the chiral rotations of complex quark masses. In this paper, we point out that when full theory includes extra heavy quarks, the ordinary method is unsettled for the extra quark contributions and does not contain its full radiative corrections. We formulate a novel method to calculate the radiative corrections to $\bar\theta$ through a direct loop-diagrammatic approach, which should be more robust than the ordinary one. As an application, we investigate the radiative $\bar\theta$ in the minimal left-right symmetric model. We first confirm a seminal result that two-loop level radiative $\bar\theta$ completely vanishes (corresponding to one-loop corrections to the quark mass matrices). Furthermore, we estimate the size of a non-vanishing radiative $\bar\theta$ at three-loop level. It is found that the resultant induced neutron EDM is comparable to the current experimental bound, and the expected size is restricted by the perturbative unitarity bound in the minimal left-right model.

Proton Decay in SUSY GUTs

I review proton decay in the SUSY SU(5) GUTs assuming the mini-split SUSY breaking model. In the mini-split SUSY breaking model, the squark and slepton masses are O(10^{(2-3)}) TeV while the gaugino masses are O(1) TeV. As the result, even the minimal SUSY SU(5) GUT is still viable in the model. We present the motivation of the mini-split SUSY model and discuss the future prospects of proton decay searches in the SUSY SU(5) GUTs.

Gamma-ray line from electroweakly interacting non-abelian spin-1 dark matter

We study gamma-ray line signatures from electroweakly interacting non-abelian spin-1 dark matter (DM). In this model, $Z_2$-odd spin-1 particles including a DM candidate have the SU(2)$_L$ triplet-like features, and the Sommerfeld enhancement is relevant in the annihilation processes. We derive the annihilation cross sections contributing to the photon emission and compare with the SU(2)$_L$ triplet fermions, such as Wino DM in the supersymmetric Standard Model. The Sommerfeld enhancement factor is approximately the same in both systems, while our spin-1 DM predicts the larger annihilation cross sections into $\gamma \gamma/ Z \gamma$ modes than those of the Wino by $\frac{38}{9}$. This is because a spin-1 DM pair forms not only $J=0$ but also $J=2$ partial wave states where $J$ denotes the total spin angular momentum. Our spin-1 DM also has a new annihilation mode into $Z_2$-even extra heavy vector and photon, $Z' \gamma$. For this mode, the photon energy depends on the masses of DM and the heavy vector, and thus we have a chance to probe the mass spectrum. The latest gamma-ray line search in the Galactic Center region gives a strong constraint on our spin-$1$ DM. We can probe the DM mass for $\lesssim 25.3~$TeV by the Cherenkov Telescope Array experiment even if we assume a conservative DM density profile.

Vanishing or non-vanishing rainbow? Reduction formulas of electric dipole moment

In this paper, we derive a simplified formula of electric dipole moments (EDMs) of a fermion. In the Standard Model, it is well-known that non-trivial cancellations between some rainbow-type diagrams induced by $W$ boson exchanges occur in the calculation of the neutron EDM at the two-loop level due to the gauge symmetry. The fermion self-energy and the vertex correction are related through the Ward-Takahashi identity, and this relation causes the exact cancellation of the EDM. We derive EDM formulas for a more general setup by introducing the form factors for the fermion self-energy and the vertex correction so that the derived formulas can be applicable to a larger class of models. We conclude that the non-zero EDM contributions are induced from rainbow-type diagrams with the chirality flipping effects for internal fermions. We also discuss the other possible generalization of the EDM calculation which is applicable to the other classes of models.

Electric dipole moments in the extended scotogenic models

Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of charged leptons arise from a new source of CP violation in the lepton sector. In this paper, we calculate the EDMs of the charged leptons in the minimal scotogenic model with two singlet fermions, and the models extended with one or two triplet fermions instead of the singlet fermions, taking into account the constraints of the neutrino oscillation data, the charged lepton flavor violation and perturbative unitarity bound for the Yukawa couplings. We show that the hybrid model with one singlet and one triplet fermions predicts an electron EDM larger than the other models in both normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. We find some parameter space has already been ruled out by the current upper bound of the electron EDM and further parameter space can be explored by future experiments.

Direct detection of vector dark matter through electromagnetic multipoles

Dark matter particles, even if they are electrically neutral, could interact with the Standard Model particles via their electromagnetic multipole moments. In this paper, we focus on the electromagnetic properties of the complex vector dark matter candidate, which can be described by means of seven form factors. We calculate the differential scattering cross-section with nuclei due to the interactions of the dark matter and nuclear multipole moments, and we derive upper limits on the former from the non-observation of dark matter signals in direct detection experiments. We also present a model where the dark matter particle is a gauge boson of a dark $SU(2)$ symmetry, and which contains heavy new fermions, charged both under the dark $SU(2)$ symmetry and under the electromagnetic $U(1)$ symmetry. The new fermions induce at the one loop level electromagnetic multipole moments, which could lead to detectable signals in direct detection experiments.

A model of electroweakly interacting non-abelian vector dark matter

We propose an electroweakly interacting spin-1 dark matter (DM) model. The electroweak gauge symmetry, SU(2)$_L\times$U(1)$_Y$, is extended into SU(2)$_0\times$SU(2)$_1 \times $SU(2)$_2 \times$U(1)$_Y$. A discrete symmetry exchanging SU(2)$_0$ and SU(2)$_2$ is imposed. This discrete symmetry stabilizes the DM candidate. The spin-1 DM particle ($V^0)$ and its SU(2)$_L$ partners ($V^\pm$) interact with the Standard Model (SM) electroweak gauge bosons without any suppression factors. Consequently, pairs of DM particles efficiently annihilate into the SM particles in the early universe, and the measured value of the DM energy density is easily realized by the thermal freeze-out mechanism. The model also predicts a heavy vector triplet ($W'^\pm$ and $Z'$) in the visible sector. They contribute to the DM annihilation processes. The mass ratio of $Z'$ and $V^0$ determines values of various couplings, and constraints on $W'$ and $Z'$ restrict regions of the parameter space that are viable for DM physics. We investigate the constraints from perturbative unitarity of scalar and gauge couplings, the Higgs signal strength, $W'$ search at the LHC, and DM direct detection experiments. It is found that the relic abundance of $V^0$ explains the right amount of the DM energy density for 3 TeV $\lesssim m_{V^0} \lesssim$ 19 TeV.

Maximum value of the spin-independent cross section in the THDM+a

We investigate the maximum value of the spin-independent cross section ($σ_\text{SI}$) in a dark matter (DM) model called the two-Higgs doublet model + a (THDM+a). This model can explain the measured value of the DM energy density by the freeze-out mechanism. Also, $σ_\text{SI}$ is suppressed by the momentum transfer at the tree level, and loop diagrams give the leading contribution to it. The model prediction of $σ_\text{SI}$ highly depends on values of $c_1$ and $c_2$ that are the quartic couplings between the gauge singlet CP-odd state ($a_0$) and Higgs doublet fields ($H_1$ and $H_2$), $c_1 a_0^2 H_1^\dagger H_1$ and $c_2 a_0^2 H_2^\dagger H_2$. We discuss the upper and lower bounds on $c_1$ and $c_2$ by studying the stability of the electroweak vacuum, the condition for the potential bounded from the below, and the perturbative unitarity. We find that the condition for the stability of the electroweak vacuum gives upper bounds on $c_1$ and $c_2$. The condition for the potential to be bounded from below gives lower bounds on $c_1$ and $c_2$. It also constrains the mixing angle between the two CP-odd states. The perturbative unitarity bound gives the upper bound on the Yukawa coupling between the dark matter and $a_0$ and the quartic coupling of $a_0$. Under these theoretical constraints, we find that the maximum value of the $σ_\text{SI}$ is $\sim 5\times 10^{-47}$ cm$^2$ for $m_A = $ 600 GeV, and the LZ and XENONnT experiments can see the DM signal predicted in this model near future.

To be, or not to be finite? The Higgs potential in Gauge-Higgs Unification

In this paper, we investigate the finiteness of the Higgs effective potential in an ${\rm SU}(\mathcal N)$ Gauge-Higgs Unification (GHU) model defined on ${\bf M}^4\times S^1$. We obtain the Higgs effective potential at the two-loop level and find that it is finite. We also discuss that the Higgs effective potential is generically divergent for three- or higher-loop levels. As an example, we consider an ${\rm SU}(\mathcal N)$ gauge theory on ${\bf M}^5\times S^1$, where the one-loop corrections to the four-Fermi operators are divergent. We find that the Higgs effective potential depends on their counter terms at the three-loop level.

Loop corrections to dark matter direct detection in a pseudoscalar mediator dark matter model

If dark matter (DM) is a fermion and its interactions with the standard model particles are mediated by pseudoscalar particles, the tree-level amplitude for the DM-nucleon elastic scattering is suppressed by the momentum transfer in the non-relativistic limit. At the loop level, on the other hand, the spin-independent contribution to the cross section appears without such suppression. Thus, the loop corrections are essential to discuss the sensitivities of the direct detection experiments for the model prediction. The one-loop corrections were investigated in the previous works. However, the two-loop diagrams give the leading order contribution to the DM-gluon effective operator ($\barχ χG^{a}_{μν} G^{a μν} $) and have not been correctly evaluated yet. Moreover, some interaction terms which affect the scattering cross section were overlooked. In this paper, we show the cross section obtained by the improved analysis and discuss the region where the cross section becomes large.

Singlet Dirac Fermion Dark Matter with Mediators at Loop

We study the phenomenology of singlet Dirac fermion dark matter in the simplified models where the dark matter interacts with the Standard Model particles at loop-level with the help of either colored or non-colored mediators. We especially focus on the implications of non-zero CP phases in the dark sector, which induce the electric dipole moments of the Dirac fermion dark matter as well as those of electron and nucleon. It is then found that the dark matter direct detection searches and the measurements of the electric dipole moments are able to test the singlet Dirac fermion dark matter scenario in the forthcoming experiments.
