Gradient-Based Topology Optimization of Localized Defect Modes with Bandgap Preservation in Phononic Crystals

Phononic crystals can confine elastic waves through localized defect states within bandgaps, offering promising opportunities for vibration control and energy localization. However, designing defect states at prescribed frequencies while maintaining adequate separation from other in-gap modes remains a significant challenge. Existing optimization approaches generally treat the target mode indirectly and provide limited control over competing localized modes. This study presents a gradient-based two-stage topology optimization framework for the frequency placement of localized defect modes in periodic elastic media. First, a host unit cell is optimized to create a bandgap around a prescribed frequency. Subsequently, only the defect cell is modified to attract a selected localized mode toward the target frequency while repelling non-target modes away from the central region of the bandgap. The formulation incorporates a smooth mode-selection function that combines mode attraction and repulsion within a unified objective, enabling automatic tracking of the relevant modes throughout the optimization process. Because the localized defect branches of interest are nearly flat, the optimization is performed using only the $\Gamma$-point eigenspectrum, while the corresponding dispersion relations over a reduced irreducible Brillouin zone are evaluated afterwards for verification. Numerical examples involving two material systems and two supercell sizes demonstrate accurate placement of localized resonances, clear separation from competing in-gap modes, and substantial preservation of the host bandgap. The resulting structures exhibit strong elastic-wave localization, highlighting the potential of the proposed approach for the design of phononic devices for vibration confinement and energy trapping.

Mass deformation of twisted super Yang-Mills theory with fuzzy sphere solution

We investigate mass deformation of twisted superalgebra of U(N) super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories in several models and in several dimensions, motivated by the method formulated in [1]. We show that there are several ways to perform the deformation, if a model possesses four scalar supercharges except for two dimensional B-model. We also evaluate classical vacuum solutions of the potentials of scalar fields for each model. We then find that it is always possible to find fuzzy sphere solution in the theories.

Vafa-Witten Theory on N=2 and N=4 Twisted Superspace in Four Dimensions

We construct a new off-shell twisted hypermultiplet with a scalar and an anti-self-dual tensor superfields. Using the N=2 twisted superspace formalism, we construct a Donaldson-Witten theory coupled to the hypermultiplet. We show that this action possesses the Vafa-Witten type N=4 twisted supersymmetry at the on-shell level. We also reconstruct the action using a N=4 twisted superconnection formalism.

Topological hypermultiplet on N=2 twisted superspace in four dimensions

We propose a N=2 twisted superspace formalism with a central charge in four dimensions by introducing a Dirac-Kähler twist. Using this formalism, we construct a twisted hypermultiplet action and find an explicit form of fermionic scalar, vector and tensor transformations. We construct a off-shell Donaldson-Witten theory coupled to the twisted hypermultiplet. We show that this action possesses N=4 twisted supersymmetry at on-shell level. It turns out that four-dimensional Dirac-Kähler twist is equivalent to the Marcus's twist.

N=4 Twisted Superspace from Dirac-Kahler Twist and Off-shell SUSY Invariant Actions in Four Dimensions

We propose N=4 twisted superspace formalism in four dimensions by introducing Dirac-Kahler twist. In addition to the BRST charge as a scalar counter part of twisted supercharge we find vector and tensor twisted supercharges. By introducing twisted chiral superfield we explicitly construct off-shell twisted N=4 SUSY invariant action. We can propose variety of supergauge invariant actions by introducing twisted vector superfield. We may, however, need to find further constraints to identify twisted N=4 super Yang-Mills action. We propose a superconnection formalism of twisted superspace where constraints play a crucial role. It turns out that N=4 superalgebra of Dirac-Kahler twist can be decomposed into N=2 sectors. We can then construct twisted N=2 super Yang-Mills actions by the superconnection formalism of twisted superspace in two and four dimensions.

Twisted Superspace for N=D=2 Super BF and Yang-Mills with Dirac-Kähler Fermion Mechanism

We propose a twisted D=N=2 superspace formalism. The relation between the twisted super charges including the BRST charge, vector and pseudo scalar super charges and the N=2 spinor super charges is established. We claim that this relation is essentially related with the Dirac-Kähler fermion mechanism. We show that a fermionic bilinear form of twisted N=2 chiral and anti-chiral superfields is equivalent to the quantized version of BF theory with the Landau type gauge fixing while a bosonic bilinear form leads to the N=2 Wess-Zumino action. We then construct a Yang-Mills action described by the twisted N=2 chiral and vector superfields, and show that the action is equivalent to the twisted version of the D=N=2 super Yang-Mills action, previously obtained from the quantized generalized topological Yang-Mills action with instanton gauge fixing.
