Two delays induce Hopf bifurcation and double Hopf bifurcation in a diffusive Leslie-Gower predator-prey system

In this paper, the dynamics of a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey system with two delays and diffusion is considered. By calculating stability switching curves, the stability of positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation and double Hopf bifurcation are investigated on the parametric plane of two delays. Taking two time delays as bifurcation parameters, the normal form on the center manifold near the double Hopf bifurcation point is derived, and the unfoldings near the critical points are given. Finally, we obtain the complex dynamics near the double Hopf bifurcation point, including the existence of quasi-periodic solutions on a 2-torus, quasi-periodic solutions on a 3-torus, and strange attractors.

Double Hopf bifurcation in delayed reaction-diffusion systems

Double Hopf bifurcation analysis can be used to reveal some complicated dynamical behavior in a dynamical system, such as the existence or coexistence of periodic orbits, quasi-periodic orbits, or even chaos. In this paper, an algorithm for deriving the normal form near a codimension-two double Hopf bifurcation of a reaction-diffusion system with time delay and Neumann boundary condition is rigorously established, by employing the center manifold reduction technique and the normal form method. We find that the dynamical behavior near bifurcation points are proved to be governed by twelve distinct unfolding systems. Two examples are performed to illustrate our results: for a stage-structured epidemic model, we find that double Hopf bifurcation appears when varying the diffusion rate and time delay, and two stable spatially inhomogeneous periodic oscillations are proved to coexist near the bifurcation point; in a diffusive predator-prey system, we theoretically proved that quasi-periodic orbits exist on two- or three-torus near a double Hopf bifurcation point, which will break down after slight perturbation, leaving the system a strange attractor.

Hopf-Hopf bifurcation and chaotic attractors in a delayed diffusive predator-prey model with fear effect

We investigate a diffusive predator-prey model by incorporating the fear effect into prey population, since the fear of predators could visibly reduce the reproduction of prey. By introducing the mature delay as bifurcation parameter, we find this makes the predator-prey system more complicated and usually induces Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations. The formulas determining the properties of Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations by computing the normal form on the center manifold are given. Near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point we give the detailed bifurcation set by investigating the universal unfoldings. Moreover, we show the existence of quasi-periodic orbits on three-torus near a Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point, leading to a strange attractor when further varying the parameter. We also find the existence of Bautin bifurcation numerically, then simulate the coexistence of stable constant stationary solution and periodic solution near this Bautin bifurcation point.

Spatiotemporal patterns near the Turing-Hopf bifurcation in a delay-diffusion mussel-algae model

The spatiotemporal patterns of a reaction diffusion mussel-algae system with a delay subject to Neumann boundary conditions is considered. The paper is a continuation of our previous studies on delay-diffusion mussel-algae model. The global existence and positivity of solutions are obtained. The stability of the positive constant steady state and existence of Hopf bifurcation and Turing bifurcation are discussed by analyzing the distribution of eigenvalues. Furthermore, the dynamic classifications near the Turing-Hopf bifurcation point are obtained in the dimensionless parameter space by calculating the normal form on the center manifold, and the spatiotemporal patterns consisting of spatially homogeneous periodic solutions, spatially inhomogeneous steady states, and spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions are identified in this parameter space through some numerical simulations. Both theoretical and numerical results reveal that the Turing-Hopf bifurcation can enrich the diversity of spatial distribution of populations.

Hopf bifurcation for a delayed diffusive logistic population model in the advective heterogeneous environment

In this paper, we investigate a delayed reaction-diffusion-advection equation, which models the population dynamics in the advective heterogeneous environment. The existence of the nonconstant positive steady state and associated Hopf bifurcation are obtained. A weighted inner product associated with the advection rate is introduced to compute the normal forms, which is the main difference between Hopf bifurcation for delayed reaction-diffusion-advection model and that for delayed reaction-diffusion model. Moreover, we find that the spatial scale and advection can affect Hopf bifurcation in the heterogenous environment.

Diffusion-induced spatio-temporal oscillations in an epidemic model with two delays

We investigate a diffusive, stage-structured epidemic model with the maturation delay and freely-moving delay. Choosing delays and diffusive rates as bifurcation parameters, the only possible way to destabilize the endemic equilibrium is through Hopf bifurcation. The normal forms of Hopf bifurcations on the center manifold are calculated, and explicit formulae determining the criticality of bifurcations are derived. There are two different kinds of stable oscillations near the first bifurcation: on one hand, we theoretically prove that when the diffusion rate of infected immature individuals is sufficiently small or sufficiently large, the first branch of Hopf bifurcating solutions is always spatially homogeneous; on the other, fixing this diffusion rate at an appropriate size, stable oscillations with different spatial profiles are observed, and the conditions to guarantee the existence of such solutions are given. These phenomena are investigated by calculating the corresponding eigenfunction of the Laplacian at the first Hopf bifurcation point.

Multiple-parameter bifurcation analysis in a Kuramoto model with time delay and distributed shear

In this paper, time delay effect and distributed shear are considered in the Kuramoto model. On the Ott-Antonsen's manifold, through analyzing the associated characteristic equation of the reduced functional differential equation, the stability boundary of the incoherent state is derived in multiple-parameter space. Moreover, very rich dynamical behavior such as stability switches inducing synchronization switches can occur in this equation. With the loss of stability, Hopf bifurcating coherent states arise, and the criticality of Hopf bifurcations is determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. On one hand, theoretical analysis indicates that the width of shear distribution and time delay can both eliminate the synchronization then lead the Kuramoto model to incoherence. On the other, time delay can induce several coexisting coherent states. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to support the obtained results where several bifurcation diagrams are drawn, and the effect of time delay and shear is discussed.

Spatial nonhomogeneous periodic solutions induced by nonlocal prey competition in a diffusive predator-prey model

The diffusive Holling-Tanner predator-prey model with no-flux boundary conditions and nonlocal prey competition is considered in this paper. We show the existence of spatial nonhomogeneous periodic solutions, which is induced by nonlocal prey competition. In particular, the constant positive steady state can lose the stability through Hopf bifurcation when the given parameter passes through some critical values, and the bifurcating periodic solutions near such values can be spatially nonhomogeneous and orbitally asymptotically stable. This phenomenon is different from that in models without nonlocal effect.

seasonal influence on age-structured invasive species with yearly generation

How do seasonal successions influence the propagation dynamics of an age-structured invasive species? We investigate this problem by considering the scenario that the offsprings are reproduced in spring and then reach maturation in fall within the same year. For this purpose, a reaction-diffusion system is proposed, with yearly periodic time delay and spatially nonlocal response caused by the periodic developmental process. By appealing to the recently developed dynamical system theories, we obtain the invasion speed $c^*$ and its coincidence with the minimal speed of time periodic traveling waves. The characterizations of $c^*$ suggest that (i) time delay decreases the speed and its periodicity may further do so; (ii) the optimal time to slow down the invasion is the season without juveniles; (iii) the speed increases to infinity with the same order as the square root of the diffusion rate.

Hopf bifurcation in a delayed reaction-diffusion-advection population model

In this paper, we investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection model with time delay effect. The stability/instability of the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state and the associated Hopf bifurcation are investigated when the given parameter of the model is near the principle eigenvalue of an elliptic operator. Our result implies that time delay can make the spatially nonhomogeneous positive steady state unstable for a reaction-diffusion-advection model, and the model can exhibit oscillatory pattern through Hopf bifurcation.

Dynamics of a diffusive predator-prey model: the effect of conversion rate

A general diffusive predator-prey model is investigated in this paper. We prove the global attractivity of constant equilibria when the conversion rate is small, and the non-existence of non-constant positive steady states when the conversion rate is large. The results are applied to several predator-prey models and give some ranges of parameters where complex pattern formation cannot occur.

Stationary patterns of a diffusive predator-prey model with Crowley-Martin functional response

A diffusive predator-prey system with predator interference and Neumann boundary conditions is considered in this paper. We derive some results on the existence and nonexistence of nonconstant stationary solutions. It is shown that there exist no nonconstant stationary solutions when the effect of the predator interference is strong or the conversion rate of the predator is large, and nonconstant stationary solutions emerge when the diffusion rate of the predator is large.
