View-aware Salient Object Detection for 360° Omnidirectional Image

Image-based salient object detection (ISOD) in 360° scenarios is significant for understanding and applying panoramic information. However, research on 360° ISOD has not been widely explored due to the lack of large, complex, high-resolution, and well-labeled datasets. Towards this end, we construct a large scale 360° ISOD dataset with object-level pixel-wise annotation on equirectangular projection (ERP), which contains rich panoramic scenes with not less than 2K resolution and is the largest dataset for 360° ISOD by far to our best knowledge. By observing the data, we find current methods face three significant challenges in panoramic scenarios: diverse distortion degrees, discontinuous edge effects and changeable object scales. Inspired by humans' observing process, we propose a view-aware salient object detection method based on a Sample Adaptive View Transformer (SAVT) module with two sub-modules to mitigate these issues. Specifically, the sub-module View Transformer (VT) contains three transform branches based on different kinds of transformations to learn various features under different views and heighten the model's feature toleration of distortion, edge effects and object scales. Moreover, the sub-module Sample Adaptive Fusion (SAF) is to adjust the weights of different transform branches based on various sample features and make transformed enhanced features fuse more appropriately. The benchmark results of 20 state-of-the-art ISOD methods reveal the constructed dataset is very challenging. Moreover, exhaustive experiments verify the proposed approach is practical and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Large-scale full-programmable quantum walk and its applications

With photonics, the quantum computational advantage has been demonstrated on the task of boson sampling. Next, developing quantum-enhanced approaches for practical problems becomes one of the top priorities for photonic systems. Quantum walks are powerful kernels for developing new and useful quantum algorithms. Here we realize large-scale quantum walks using a fully programmable photonic quantum computing system. The system integrates a silicon quantum photonic chip, enabling the simulation of quantum walk dynamics on graphs with up to 400 vertices and possessing full programmability over quantum walk parameters, including the particle property, initial state, graph structure, and evolution time. In the 400-dimensional Hilbert space, the average fidelity of random entangled quantum states after the whole on-chip circuit evolution reaches as high as 94.29$\pm$1.28$\%$. With the system, we demonstrated exponentially faster hitting and quadratically faster mixing performance of quantum walks over classical random walks, achieving more than two orders of magnitude of enhancement in the experimental hitting efficiency and almost half of the reduction in the experimental evolution time for mixing. We utilize the system to implement a series of quantum applications, including measuring the centrality of scale-free networks, searching targets on Erdös-Rényi networks, distinguishing non-isomorphic graph pairs, and simulating the topological phase of higher-order topological insulators. Our work shows one feasible path for quantum photonics to address applications of practical interests in the near future.

An Unbiased Quantum Random Number Generator Based on Boson Sampling

It has been proven that Boson sampling is a much promising model of optical quantum computation, which has been applied to designing quantum computer successfully, such as "Jiuzhang". However, the meaningful randomness of Boson sampling results, whose correctness and significance were proved from a specific quantum mechanical distribution, has not been utilized or exploited. In this research, Boson sampling is applied to design a novel Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) by fully exploiting the randomness of Boson sampling results, and its prototype system is constructed with the programmable silicon photonic processor, which can generate uniform and unbiased random sequences and overcome the shortcomings of the existing discrete QRNGs such as source-related, high demand for the photon number resolution capability of the detector and slow self-detection generator speed. Boson sampling is implemented as a random entropy source, and random bit strings with satisfactory randomness and uniformity can be obtained after post-processing the sampling results. It is the first approach for applying the randomness of Boson sampling results to develop a practical prototype system for actual tasks, and the experiment results demonstrate the designed Boson sampling-based QRNG prototype system pass 15 tests of the NIST SP 800-22 statistical test component, which prove that Boson sampling has great potential for practical applications with desirable performance besides quantum advantage.

Large-Scale Privacy-Preserving Network Embedding against Private Link Inference Attacks

Network embedding represents network nodes by a low-dimensional informative vector. While it is generally effective for various downstream tasks, it may leak some private information of networks, such as hidden private links. In this work, we address a novel problem of privacy-preserving network embedding against private link inference attacks. Basically, we propose to perturb the original network by adding or removing links, and expect the embedding generated on the perturbed network can leak little information about private links but hold high utility for various downstream tasks. Towards this goal, we first propose general measurements to quantify privacy gain and utility loss incurred by candidate network perturbations; we then design a PPNE framework to identify the optimal perturbation solution with the best privacy-utility trade-off in an iterative way. Furthermore, we propose many techniques to accelerate PPNE and ensure its scalability. For instance, as the skip-gram embedding methods including DeepWalk and LINE can be seen as matrix factorization with closed form embedding results, we devise efficient privacy gain and utility loss approximation methods to avoid the repetitive time-consuming embedding training for every candidate network perturbation in each iteration. Experiments on real-life network datasets (with up to millions of nodes) verify that PPNE outperforms baselines by sacrificing less utility and obtaining higher privacy protection.

Strong pulse illumination hacks self-differencing avalanche photodiode detectors in a high-speed quantum key distribution system

Implementation of high-speed quantum key distribution~(QKD) has become one of the major focus in the field, which produces high key-generation rate for applications. To achieve high-speed QKD, tailored techniques are developed and employed to quickly generate and detect quantum states. However, these techniques may introduce unique loopholes to compromise the security of QKD systems. In this paper, we investigate the loopholes of self-differencing~(SD) avalanche photodiode~(APD) detector, typically used for high-speed detection in a QKD system, and demonstrate experimental testing of SD APD detector under strong pulse illumination attack. This attack presents blinding stability and helps an eavesdropper to learn the secret key without introducing extra QBER. Based on this testing, we propose a set of criteria for protecting SD APD detectors from the strong pulse illumination attack.

HyObscure: Hybrid Obscuring for Privacy-Preserving Data Publishing

Minimizing privacy leakage while ensuring data utility is a critical problem to data holders in a privacy-preserving data publishing task. Most prior research concerns only with one type of data and resorts to a single obscuring method, \eg, obfuscation or generalization, to achieve a privacy-utility tradeoff, which is inadequate for protecting real-life heterogeneous data and is hard to defend ever-growing machine learning based inference attacks. This work takes a pilot study on privacy-preserving data publishing when both generalization and obfuscation operations are employed for heterogeneous data protection. To this end, we first propose novel measures for privacy and utility quantification and formulate the hybrid privacy-preserving data obscuring problem to account for the joint effect of generalization and obfuscation. We then design a novel hybrid protection mechanism called HyObscure, to cross-iteratively optimize the generalization and obfuscation operations for maximum privacy protection under a certain utility guarantee. The convergence of the iterative process and the privacy leakage bound of HyObscure are also provided in theory. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HyObscure significantly outperforms a variety of state-of-the-art baseline methods when facing various inference attacks under different scenarios. HyObscure also scales linearly to the data size and behaves robustly with varying key parameters.

Construction of Attenuation Relationship of Peak Ground Velocity Using Machine Learning and Examination of Station Correction Factor

This study tries to develop new attenuation relationships of peak ground velocity using machine learning methods; random forest and neural network. In order to compare with the predictors obtained by machine learning, we have also constructed a new attenuation relationship of peak ground velocity using three-stage regression procedure proposed by Molas and Yamazaki (1995). In this study, 6,944 ground motion records at 1,184 seismic observation stations which were observed during the 32 earthquakes are employed to construct the attenuation relationships. Ground motion records from the 4 recent earthquakes are used as the test dataset. The test results show that when the shortest distance from the fault is small, the predictions by machine learning techniques are more accurate than the traditional equation. However, there is still a problem of overestimation in the predictors of machine learning, even if weights are added to the training dataset. In addition, the station correction factors based on machine learning were derived and proved to be correlated with the average shear wave velocity.

General Quantum Bernoulli Factory: Framework Analysis and Experiments

The unremitting pursuit for quantum advantages gives rise to the discovery of a quantum-enhanced randomness processing named quantum Bernoulli factory (QBF). This quantum enhanced process can show its priority over the corresponding classical process through readily available experimental resources, thus in the near term it may be capable of accelerating the applications of classical Bernoulli factories, such as the widely used sampling algorithms. In this work, we provide the framework analysis of the QBF. We thoroughly analyze the quantum state evolution in this process, discovering the field structure of the constructible quantum states. Our framework analysis shows that naturally, the previous works can be described as specific instances of this framework. Then, as a proof of principle, we experimentally demonstrate this framework via an entangled two-photon source along with a reconfigurable photonic logic, and show the advantages of the QBF over the classical model through a classically infeasible instance. These results may stimulate the discovery of advantages of the quantum randomness processing in a wider range of tasks, as well as its potential applications.

Variational quantum process tomography

Quantum process tomography is an experimental technique to fully characterize an unknown quantum process. Standard quantum process tomography suffers from exponentially scaling of the number of measurements with the increasing system size. In this work, we put forward a quantum machine learning algorithm which approximately encodes the unknown unitary quantum process into a relatively shallow depth parametric quantum circuit. We demonstrate our method by reconstructing the unitary quantum processes resulting from the quantum Hamiltonian evolution and random quantum circuits up to $8$ qubits. Results show that those quantum processes could be reconstructed with high fidelity, while the number of input states required are at least $2$ orders of magnitude less than required by the standard quantum process tomography.

Multi-Aspect Temporal Network Embedding: A Mixture of Hawkes Process View

Recent years have witnessed the tremendous research interests in network embedding. Extant works have taken the neighborhood formation as the critical information to reveal the inherent dynamics of network structures, and suggested encoding temporal edge formation sequences to capture the historical influences of neighbors. In this paper, however, we argue that the edge formation can be attributed to a variety of driving factors including the temporal influence, which is better referred to as multiple aspects. As a matter of fact, different node aspects can drive the formation of distinctive neighbors, giving birth to the multi-aspect embedding that relates to but goes beyond a temporal scope. Along this vein, we propose a Mixture of Hawkes-based Temporal Network Embeddings (MHNE) model to capture the aspect-driven neighborhood formation of networks. In MHNE, we encode the multi-aspect embeddings into the mixture of Hawkes processes to gain the advantages in modeling the excitation effects and the latent aspects. Specifically, a graph attention mechanism is used to assign different weights to account for the excitation effects of history events, while a Gumbel-Softmax is plugged in to derive the distribution over the aspects. Extensive experiments on 8 different temporal networks have demonstrated the great performance of the multi-aspect embeddings obtained by MHNE in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods.

System Design and Analysis for Energy-Efficient Passive UAV Radar Imaging System using Illuminators of Opportunity

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can provide superior flexibility and cost-efficiency for modern radar imaging systems, which is an ideal platform for advanced remote sensing applications using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology. In this paper, an energy-efficient passive UAV radar imaging system using illuminators of opportunity is first proposed and investigated. Equipped with a SAR receiver, the UAV platform passively reuses the backscattered signal of the target scene from an external illuminator, such as SAR satellite, GNSS or ground-based stationary commercial illuminators, and achieves bi-static SAR imaging and data communication. The system can provide instant accessibility to the radar image of the interested targets with enhanced platform concealment, which is an essential tool for stealth observation and scene monitoring. The mission concept and system block diagram are first presented with justifications on the advantages of the system. Then, a set of mission performance evaluators is established to quantitatively assess the capability of the system in a comprehensive manner, including UAV navigation, passive SAR imaging and communication. Finally, the validity of the proposed performance evaluators are verified by numerical simulations.

Conversations Gone Alright: Quantifying and Predicting Prosocial Outcomes in Online Conversations

Online conversations can go in many directions: some turn out poorly due to antisocial behavior, while others turn out positively to the benefit of all. Research on improving online spaces has focused primarily on detecting and reducing antisocial behavior. Yet we know little about positive outcomes in online conversations and how to increase them-is a prosocial outcome simply the lack of antisocial behavior or something more? Here, we examine how conversational features lead to prosocial outcomes within online discussions. We introduce a series of new theory-inspired metrics to define prosocial outcomes such as mentoring and esteem enhancement. Using a corpus of 26M Reddit conversations, we show that these outcomes can be forecasted from the initial comment of an online conversation, with the best model providing a relative 24% improvement over human forecasting performance at ranking conversations for predicted outcome. Our results indicate that platforms can use these early cues in their algorithmic ranking of early conversations to prioritize better outcomes.

Deterministic Scheduling for Low-latency Wireless Transmissions with Continuous Channel States

High energy efficiency and low latency have always been the significant goals pursued by the designer of wireless networks. One efficient way to achieve these goals is cross-layer scheduling based on the system states in different layers, such as queuing state and channel state. However, most existing works in cross-layer design focus on the scheduling based on the discrete channel state. Little attention is paid to considering the continuous channel state that is closer to the practical scenario. Therefore, in this paper, we study the optimal cross-layer scheduling policy on data transmission in a single communication link with continuous state-space of channel. The aim of scheduling is to minimize the average power for data transmission when the average delay is constrained. More specifically, the optimal cross-layer scheduling problem was formulated as a variational problem. Based on the variational problem, we show the optimality of the deterministic scheduling policy through a constructive proof. The optimality of the deterministic policy allows us to compress the searching space from the probabilistic policies to the deterministic policies.

Recommendation with Attribute-aware Product Networks: A Representation Learning Model

With the prosperity of business intelligence, recommender systems have evolved into a new stage that we not only care about what to recommend, but why it is recommended. Explainability of recommendations thus emerges as a focal point of research and becomes extremely desired in e-commerce. Existent studies along this line often exploit item attributes and correlations from different perspectives, but they yet lack an effective way to combine both types of information for deep learning of personalized interests. In light of this, we propose a novel graph structure, \emph{attribute network}, based on both items' co-purchase network and important attributes. A novel neural model called \emph{eRAN} is then proposed to generate recommendations from attribute networks with explainability and cold-start capability. Specifically, eRAN first maps items connected in attribute networks to low-dimensional embedding vectors through a deep autoencoder, and then an attention mechanism is applied to model the attractions of attributes to users, from which personalized item representation can be derived. Moreover, a pairwise ranking loss is constructed into eRAN to improve recommendations, with the assumption that item pairs co-purchased by a user should be more similar than those non-paired with negative sampling in personalized view. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method compared with some state-of-the-art competitors. In particular, eRAN shows its unique abilities in recommending cold-start items with higher accuracy, as well as in understanding user preferences underlying complicated co-purchasing behaviors.

Hacking single-photon avalanche detector in quantum key distribution via pulse illumination

Quantum key distribution (QKD) has been proved to be information-theoretically secure in theory. Unfortunately, the imperfect devices in practice compromise its security. Thus, to improve the security property of practical QKD systems, a commonly used method is to patch the loopholes in the existing QKD systems. However, in this work, we show an adversary's capability of exploiting the imperfection of the patch itself to bypass the patch. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrate that, in the detector under test, the patch of photocurrent monitor against the detector blinding attack can be defeated by the pulse illumination attack proposed in this paper. We also analyze the secret key rate under the pulse illumination attack, which theoretically confirmed that Eve can conduct the attack to learn the secret key. This work indicates the importance of inspecting the security loopholes in a detection unit to further understand their impacts on a QKD system. The method of pulse illumination attack can be a general testing item in the security evaluation standard of QKD.

Sample caching Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to boson sampling simulation

Boson sampling is a promising candidate for quantum supremacy. It requires to sample from a complicated distribution, and is trusted to be intractable on classical computers. Among the various classical sampling methods, the Markov chain Monte Carlo method is an important approach to the simulation and validation of boson sampling. This method however suffers from the severe sample loss issue caused by the autocorrelation of the sample sequence. Addressing this, we propose the sample caching Markov chain Monte Carlo method that eliminates the correlations among the samples, and prevents the sample loss at the meantime, allowing more efficient simulation of boson sampling. Moreover, our method can be used as a general sampling framework that can benefit a wide range of sampling tasks, and is particularly suitable for applications where a large number of samples are taken.

Variational Quantum Circuits for Quantum State Tomography

Quantum state tomography is a key process in most quantum experiments. In this work, we employ quantum machine learning for state tomography. Given an unknown quantum state, it can be learned by maximizing the fidelity between the output of a variational quantum circuit and this state. The number of parameters of the variational quantum circuit grows linearly with the number of qubits and the circuit depth, so that only polynomial measurements are required, even for highly-entangled states. After that, a subsequent classical circuit simulator is used to transform the information of the target quantum state from the variational quantum circuit into a familiar format. We demonstrate our method by performing numerical simulations for the tomography of the ground state of a one-dimensional quantum spin chain, using a variational quantum circuit simulator. Our method is suitable for near-term quantum computing platforms, and could be used for relatively large-scale quantum state tomography for experimentally relevant quantum states.

Robustness study of noisy annotation in deep learning based medical image segmentation

Partly due to the use of exhaustive-annotated data, deep networks have achieved impressive performance on medical image segmentation. Medical imaging data paired with noisy annotation are, however, ubiquitous, but little is known about the effect of noisy annotation on deep learning-based medical image segmentation. We studied the effects of noisy annotation in the context of mandible segmentation from CT images. First, 202 images of Head and Neck cancer patients were collected from our clinical database, where the organs-at-risk were annotated by one of 12 planning dosimetrists. The mandibles were roughly annotated as the planning avoiding structure. Then, mandible labels were checked and corrected by a physician to get clean annotations. At last, by varying the ratios of noisy labels in the training data, deep learning-based segmentation models were trained, one for each ratio. In general, a deep network trained with noisy labels had worse segmentation results than that trained with clean labels, and fewer noisy labels led to better segmentation. When using 20% or less noisy cases for training, no significant difference was found on the prediction performance between the models trained by noisy or clean. This study suggests that deep learning-based medical image segmentation is robust to noisy annotations to some extent. It also highlights the importance of labeling quality in deep learning
