AI assisted optimization of integrated waveguide polarizers containing 2D reduced graphene oxide

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) exhibits strong anisotropic light absorption and high compatibility with photonic integrated chips, making it a promising material for implementing high performance onchip polarization selective devices. The performance of rGO integrated waveguide polarizers is highly dependent on the waveguide geometry, and achieving optimal performance requires exploring a large parameter space, making conventional mode simulation methods computationally demanding. Here, we propose and demonstrate a machine learning framework based on fully connected neural networks (FCNNs) to map the dependence of the polarizer figure of merit (FOM) on the waveguide geometry. Once trained by using a small dataset of low resolution mode simulation results, the FCNN framework can rapidly and accurately predict FOM values across a large structural parameter space with high resolution. Results show that this method can reduce overall computing time by more than 4 orders of magnitude as compared to the mode simulation methods, and achieve high prediction accuracy with an average deviation (AD) below 0.05. These results highlight the FCNN based machine learning framework as an efficient tool for the design and optimization of rGO integrated waveguide polarizers.

AI based design of 2D material integrated optical polarizers

On-chip integration of highly anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials offers new opportunities for realizing high performance polarization selective devices. Obtaining optimized designs for such devices requires extensively sweeping large parameter spaces, which in conventional approaches relies on massive mode simulations that demand considerable computational resources. Here, we address this limitation by developing a machine learning (ML) model based on fully connected neural networks (FCNNs). Trained by using mode simulation results for low resolution structural parameters, the FCNN model can accurately predict polarizer figures of merits (FOMs) for high resolution parameters and rapidly map the global variation trend across the entire parameter space. We test the performance of the FCNN model using two types of polarizers with 2D graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Results show that, compared to conventional mode simulation approach, our approach can not only reduce the overall computing time by about 4 orders of magnitude, but also achieve highly accurate FOM predictions with an average deviation of less than 0.04. In addition, the measured FOM values for the fabricated devices show good agreement with the predicted ones, with discrepancies remaining below 0.2. These results validate artificial intelligence (AI) as an effective approach for designing and optimizing 2D-material based optical polarizers with high efficiency.

Enhanced selfphase modulation in silicon nitride waveguides with integrated 2D MoS2 films

On-chip integration of 2D materials provides a promising route towards next-generation integrated optical devices with performance beyond existing limits. Here, significantly enhanced spectral broadening induced by self-phase modulation (SPM) is experimentally demonstrated in silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides integrated with 2D monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films. Monolayer MoS2 films with ultrahigh optical nonlinearity are synthesized via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and subsequently transferred onto Si3N4 waveguides, with precise control of the film coating length and placement achieved by selectively opening windows on the chip silica upper cladding. Detailed SPM measurements at telecom wavelengths are performed using fabricated waveguides with various MoS2 film coating lengths. Compared to devices without MoS2, increased spectral broadening of sub-picosecond optical pulses is observed for the hybrid devices, achieving a broadening factor of up to ~ 2.4 for a device with a 1.4-mm-long MoS2 film. Theoretical fitting of the experimental results further reveals an increase of up to ~27 fold in the nonlinear parameter (γ) for the hybrid MoS2 / Si3N4 waveguides and an equivalent Kerr coefficient (n2) of MoS2 nearly 5 orders of magnitude higher than Si3N4. These results confirm the effectiveness of on-chip integration of 2D MoS2 films to enhance the nonlinear optical performance of integrated photonic devices.

Policy Optimization and Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning for Mean-variance Team Stochastic Games

We study a long-run mean-variance team stochastic game (MV-TSG), where each agent shares a common mean-variance objective for the system and takes actions independently to maximize it. MV-TSG has two main challenges. First, the variance metric is neither additive nor Markovian in a dynamic setting. Second, simultaneous policy updates of all agents lead to a non-stationary environment for each individual agent. Both challenges make dynamic programming inapplicable. In this paper, we study MV-TSGs from the perspective of sensitivity-based optimization. The performance difference and performance derivative formulas for joint policies are derived, which provide optimization information for MV-TSGs. We prove the existence of a deterministic Nash policy for this problem. Subsequently, we propose a Mean-Variance Multi-Agent Policy Iteration (MV-MAPI) algorithm with a sequential update scheme, where individual agent policies are updated one by one in a given order. We prove that the MV-MAPI algorithm converges to a first-order stationary point of the objective function. By analyzing the local geometry of stationary points, we derive specific conditions for stationary points to be (local) Nash equilibria, and further, strict local optima. To solve large-scale MV-TSGs in scenarios with unknown environmental parameters, we extend the idea of trust region methods to MV-MAPI and develop a multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm named Mean-Variance Multi-Agent Trust Region Policy Optimization (MV-MATRPO). We derive a performance lower bound for each update of joint policies. Finally, numerical experiments on energy management in multiple microgrid systems are conducted.

Independent policy gradient-based reinforcement learning for economic and reliable energy management of multi-microgrid systems

Efficiency and reliability are both crucial for energy management, especially in multi-microgrid systems (MMSs) integrating intermittent and distributed renewable energy sources. This study investigates an economic and reliable energy management problem in MMSs under a distributed scheme, where each microgrid independently updates its energy management policy in a decentralized manner to optimize the long-term system performance collaboratively. We introduce the mean and variance of the exchange power between the MMS and the main grid as indicators for the economic performance and reliability of the system. Accordingly, we formulate the energy management problem as a mean-variance team stochastic game (MV-TSG), where conventional methods based on the maximization of expected cumulative rewards are unsuitable for variance metrics. To solve MV-TSGs, we propose a fully distributed independent policy gradient algorithm, with rigorous convergence analysis, for scenarios with known model parameters. For large-scale scenarios with unknown model parameters, we further develop a deep reinforcement learning algorithm based on independent policy gradients, enabling data-driven policy optimization. Numerical experiments in two scenarios validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Our approaches fully leverage the distributed computational capabilities of MMSs and achieve a well-balanced trade-off between economic performance and operational reliability.

Silicon Integrated Photonic Waveguide Polarizers with 2D MoS2 Films

Polarization control is of fundamental importance for modern optical systems, and optical polarizers serve as critical components for enabling this functionality. Here, we experimentally demonstrate optical polarizers by integrating 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films onto silicon photonic waveguides. High-quality monolayer MoS2 films with highly anisotropic light absorption are synthesized via a low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) method and subsequently transferred onto silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire waveguides to fabricate integrated optical polarizers. Detailed measurements are carried out for the fabricated devices with various MoS2 film coating lengths and silicon waveguide geometry. The results show that a maximum polarization-dependent loss of ~21 dB is achieved, together with a high figure of merit of ~4.2. In addition, the hybrid waveguide polarizers exhibit broad operation bandwidth exceeding ~100 nm and excellent power durability. These results highlight the strong potential for on-chip integration of 2D MoS2 films to implement high-performance polarization selective devices.

Dexterous Teleoperation of 20-DoF ByteDexter Hand via Human Motion Retargeting

Replicating human--level dexterity remains a fundamental robotics challenge, requiring integrated solutions from mechatronic design to the control of high degree--of--freedom (DoF) robotic hands. While imitation learning shows promise in transferring human dexterity to robots, the efficacy of trained policies relies on the quality of human demonstration data. We bridge this gap with a hand--arm teleoperation system featuring: (1) a 20--DoF linkage--driven anthropomorphic robotic hand for biomimetic dexterity, and (2) an optimization--based motion retargeting for real--time, high--fidelity reproduction of intricate human hand motions and seamless hand--arm coordination. We validate the system via extensive empirical evaluations, including dexterous in-hand manipulation tasks and a long--horizon task requiring the organization of a cluttered makeup table randomly populated with nine objects. Experimental results demonstrate its intuitive teleoperation interface with real--time control and the ability to generate high--quality demonstration data. Astra: Toward General-Purpose Mobile Robots via Hierarchical Multimodal Learning

Modern robot navigation systems encounter difficulties in diverse and complex indoor environments. Traditional approaches rely on multiple modules with small models or rule-based systems and thus lack adaptability to new environments. To address this, we developed Astra, a comprehensive dual-model architecture, Astra-Global and Astra-Local, for mobile robot navigation. Astra-Global, a multimodal LLM, processes vision and language inputs to perform self and goal localization using a hybrid topological-semantic graph as the global map, and outperforms traditional visual place recognition methods. Astra-Local, a multitask network, handles local path planning and odometry estimation. Its 4D spatial-temporal encoder, trained through self-supervised learning, generates robust 4D features for downstream tasks. The planning head utilizes flow matching and a novel masked ESDF loss to minimize collision risks for generating local trajectories, and the odometry head integrates multi-sensor inputs via a transformer encoder to predict the relative pose of the robot. Deployed on real in-house mobile robots, Astra achieves high end-to-end mission success rate across diverse indoor environments.
