On the singularities of the discrete Korteweg-deVries equation

We study the structure of singularities in the discrete Korteweg-deVries (d-KdV) equation. Four different types of singularities are identified. The first type corresponds to localised, `confined', singularities, the confinement constraints for which provide the integrability conditions for generalisations of d-KdV. Two other types of singularities are of infinite extent and consist of oblique lines of infinities, possibly alternating with lines of zeros. The fourth type of singularity corresponds to horizontal strips where the product of the values on vertically adjacent points is equal to 1. (A vertical version of this singularity with product equal to $-1$ on horizontally adjacent sites also exists). Due to its orientation this singularity can, in fact, interact with the other types. This leads to an extremely rich structure for the singularities of d-KdV, which is studied in detail in this paper. Given the important role played by the fourth type of singularity we decided to give it a special name: taishi (the origin of which is explained in the text). The taishi do not exist for nonintegrable extensions of d-KdV, which explains the relative paucity of singularity structures in the nonintegrable case: the second and third type of singularities that correspond to oblique lines still exist and the localised singularities of the integrable case now become unconfined, leading to semi-infinite lines of infinities alternating with zeros.

Rule 184 fuzzy cellular automaton as a mathematical model for traffic flow

The rule 184 fuzzy cellular automaton is regarded as a mathematical model of traffic flow because it contains the two fundamental traffic flow models, the rule 184 cellular automaton and the Burgers equation, as special cases. We show that the fundamental diagram (flux-density diagram) of this model consists of three parts: a free-flow part, a congestion part and a two-periodic part. The two-periodic part, which may correspond to the synchronized mode region, is a two-dimensional area in the diagram, the boundary of which consists of the free-flow and the congestion parts. We prove that any state in both the congestion and the two-periodic parts is stable, but is not asymptotically stable, while that in the free-flow part is unstable. Transient behaviour of the model and bottle-neck effects are also examined by numerical simulations. Furthermore, to investigate low or high density limit, we consider ultradiscrete limit of the model and show that any ultradiscrete state turns to a travelling wave state of velocity one in finite time steps for generic initial conditions.

Revisiting the Human and Nature Dynamics model

We present a simple model for describing the dynamics of the interaction between a homogeneous population or society, and the natural resources and reserves that the society needs for its survival. The model is formulated in terms of ordinary differential equations, which are subsequently discretised, the discrete system providing a natural integrator for the continuous one. An ultradiscrete, generalised cellular automaton-like, model is also derived. The dynamics of our simple, three-component, model are particularly rich exhibiting either a route to a steady state or an oscillating, limit cycle-type regime or to a collapse. While these dynamical behaviours depend strongly on the choice of the details of the model, the important conclusion is that a collapse or near collapse, leading to the disappearance of the population or to a complete transfiguration of its societal model, is indeed possible.

Discrete Painlevé equations from singularity patterns: the asymmetric trihomographic case

We derive the discrete Painlevé equations associated to the affine Weyl group E$_8^{(1)}$ that can be represented by an (in the QRT sense) "asymmetric" trihomographic system. The method used in this paper is based on singularity confinement. We start by obtaining all possible singularity patterns for a general asymmetric trihomographic system and discard those patterns which cannot lead to confined singularities. Working with the remaining ones we implement the confinement conditions and derive the corresponding discrete Painlevé equations, which involve two variables. By eliminating either of these variables we obtain a "symmetric" equation. Examining all these equations of a single variable, we find that they coincide exactly with those derived in previous works of ours, thereby establishing the completeness of our results.

Calculating the algebraic entropy of mappings with unconfined singularities

We present a method for calculating the dynamical degree of a mapping with unconfined singularities. It is based on a method introduced by Halburd for the computation of the growth of the iterates of a rational mapping with confined singularities. In particular, we show through several examples how simple calculations, based on the singularity patterns of the mapping, allow one to obtain the exact value of the dynamical degree for nonintegrable mappings that do not possess the singularity confinement property. We also study linearisable mappings with unconfined singularities to show that in this case our method indeed yields zero algebraic entropy.

Multiplicative equations related to the affine Weyl group E$_8$

We derive integrable equations starting from autonomous mappings with a general form inspired by the multiplicative systems associated to the affine Weyl group E$_8^{(1)}$. Five such systems are obtained, three of which turn out to be linearisable and the remaining two are integrable in terms of elliptic functions. In the case of the linearisable mappings we derive nonautonomous forms which contain a free function of the dependent variable and we present the linearisation in each case. The two remaining systems are deautonomised to new discrete Painlevé equations. We show that these equations are in fact special forms of much richer systems associated to the affine Weyl groups E$_7^{(1)}$ and E$_8^{(1)}$ respectively.

Singularity confinement and full-deautonomisation: a discrete integrability criterion

We present a new approach to singularity confinement which makes it an efficient and reliable discrete integrability detector. Our method is based on the full-deautonomisation procedure, which consists in analysing non-autonomous extensions of a given discrete system obtained by adding terms that are initially absent, but whose presence does not alter the singularity pattern. A justification for this approach is given through an algebro-geometric analysis. We also introduce the notions of early and late confinement. While the former is a confinement that may exist already for the autonomous system, the latter corresponds to a singularity pattern longer than that of the autonomous case. Late confinement will be shown to play an important role in the singularity analysis of systems with non-trivial gauge freedom, for which the existence of an undetected gauge in conjunction with a sketchy analysis, might lead to erroneous conclusions as to their integrability. An algebro-geometric analysis of the role of late confinement in this context is also offered. This novel type of singularity confinement analysis will be shown to allow for the exact calculation of the algebraic entropy of a given mapping.

The ILW hierarchy

In this paper, we present a new hierarchy which includes the intermediate long wave (ILW) equation at the lowest order. This hierarchy is thought to be a novel reduction of the 1st modified KP type hierarchy. The framework of our investigation is Sato theory.

Discrete soliton equations and convergence acceleration algorithms

Some of the well-known convergence acceleration algorithms, when viewed as two-variable difference equations, are equivalent to discrete soliton equations. It is shown that the $η-$algorithm is nothing but the discrete KdV equation. In addition, one generalized version of the $ρ-$algorithm is considered to be integrable discretization of the cylindrical KdV equation.

Bilinearization of a Generalized Derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger equation

A generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, \ii q_t + q_{xx} + 2\ii γ|q|^2 q_x + 2\ii (γ-1)q^2 q^*_x + (γ-1)(γ-2)|q|^4 q = 0 , is studied by means of Hirota's bilinear formalism. Soliton solutions are constructed as quotients of Wronski-type determinants. A relationship between the bilinear structure and gauge transformation is also discussed.

Casorati Determinant Solutions for the Discrete Painlevé III Equation

The discrete Painlevé III equation is investigated based on the bilinear formalism. It is shown that it admits the solutions expressed by the Casorati determinant whose entries are given by the discrete Bessel function. Moreover, based on the observation that these discrete Bessel functions are transformed to the $q$-Bessel functions by a simple variable transformation, we present a $q$-difference analogue of the Painlevé III equation.

Casorati Determinant Solutions for the Discrete Painlevé-II Equation

We present a class of solutions to the discrete Painlevé-II equation for particular values of its parameters. It is shown that these solutions can be expressed in terms of Casorati determinants whose entries are discrete Airy functions. The analogy between the $τ$ function for the discrete P$_{\rm \romanno2}$ and the that of the discrete Toda molecule equation is pointed out.

Casorati Determinant Solution for the Relativistic Toda Lattice Equation

The relativistic Toda lattice equation is decomposed into three Toda systems, the Toda lattice itself, Bäcklund transformation of Toda lattice and discrete time Toda lattice. It is shown that the solutions of the equation are given in terms of the Casorati determinant. By using the Casoratian technique, the bilinear equations of Toda systems are reduced to the Laplace expansion form for determinants. The $N$-soliton solution is explicitly constructed in the form of the Casorati determinant.

q-Discrete Toda Molecule Equation

A q-discrete version of the two-dimensional Toda molecule equation is proposed through the direct method. Its solution, Bäcklund transformation and Lax pair are discussed. The reduction to the q-discrete cylindrical Toda molecule equation is also discussed.
