Cohomology of the moduli of Higgs bundles via positive characteristic

For any two degrees coprime to the rank, we construct a family of ring isomorphisms parameterized by GSp(2g) between the cohomology of the moduli spaces of stable Higgs bundles which preserve the perverse filtrations. As consequences, we prove two structural results concerning the cohomology of Higgs moduli which are predicted by the P=W conjecture in non-abelian Hodge theory: (1) Galois conjugation for character varieties preserves the perverse filtrations for the corresponding Higgs moduli spaces. (2) The restriction of the Hodge-Tate decomposition for a character variety to each piece of the perverse filtration for the corresponding Higgs moduli space gives also a decomposition. Our proof uses reduction to positive characteristic and relies on the non-abelian Hodge correspondence in characteristic p between Dolbeault and de Rham moduli spaces.

Cohomological $χ$-independence for moduli of one-dimensional sheaves and moduli of Higgs bundles

We prove that the intersection cohomology (together with the perverse and the Hodge filtrations) for the moduli space of one-dimensional semistable sheaves supported in an ample curve class on a toric del Pezzo surface is independent of the Euler characteristic of the sheaves. We also prove an analogous result for the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles with respect to an effective divisor $D$ of degree $\mathrm{deg}(D)>2g-2$. Our results confirm the cohomological $χ$-independence conjecture by Bousseau for $\mathbb{P}^2$, and verify Toda's conjecture for Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for certain local curves and local surfaces. For the proof, we combine a generalized version of Ngô's support theorem, a dimension estimate for the stacky Hilbert-Chow morphism, and a splitting theorem for the morphism from the moduli stack to the good GIT quotient.

On intersection cohomology and Lagrangian fibrations of irreducible symplectic varieties

We prove several results concerning the intersection cohomology and the perverse filtration associated with a Lagrangian fibration of an irreducible symplectic variety. We first show that the perverse numbers only depend on the deformation equivalence class of the ambient variety. Then we compute the border of the perverse diamond, which further yields a complete description of the intersection cohomology of the Lagrangian base and the invariant cohomology classes of the fibers. Lastly, we identify the perverse and Hodge numbers of intersection cohomology when the irreducible symplectic variety admits a symplectic resolution. These results generalize some earlier work by the second and third authors in the nonsingular case.

Hitchin fibrations, abelian surfaces, and the P=W conjecture

We study the topology of Hitchin fibrations via abelian surfaces. We establish the P=W conjecture for genus $2$ curves and arbitrary rank. In higher genus and arbitrary rank, we prove that P=W holds for the subalgebra of cohomology generated by even tautological classes. Furthermore, we show that all tautological generators lie in the correct pieces of the perverse filtration as predicted by the P=W conjecture. In combination with recent work of Mellit, this reduces the full conjecture to the multiplicativity of the perverse filtration. Our main technique is to study the Hitchin fibration as a degeneration of the Hilbert-Chow morphism associated with the moduli space of certain torsion sheaves on an abelian surface, where the symmetries induced by Markman's monodromy operators play a crucial role.

Topology of Lagrangian fibrations and Hodge theory of hyper-Kähler manifolds

We establish a compact analog of the P = W conjecture. For a holomorphic symplectic variety with a Lagrangian fibration, we show that the perverse numbers associated with the fibration match perfectly with the Hodge numbers of the total space. This builds a new connection between the topology of Lagrangian fibrations and the Hodge theory of hyper-Kähler manifolds. We present two applications of our result, one on the topology of the base and fibers of a Lagrangian fibration, the other on the refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of a K3 surface. Furthermore, we show that the perverse filtration associated with a Lagrangian fibration is multiplicative under cup product.

Rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties and Gromov-Witten invariants

We use Gromov-Witten theory to study rational curves in holomorphic symplectic varieties. We present a numerical criterion for the existence of uniruled divisors swept out by rational curves in the primitive curve class of a very general holomorphic symplectic variety of $K3^{[n]}$ type. We also classify all rational curves in the primitive curve class of the Fano variety of lines in a very general cubic $4$-fold, and prove the irreducibility of the corresponding moduli space. Our proofs rely on Gromov-Witten calculations by the first author, and in the Fano case on a geometric construction of Voisin. In the Fano case a second proof via classical geometry is sketched.

On the P=W conjecture for $\mathrm{SL}_n$

Let $p$ be a prime number. We prove that the $P=W$ conjecture for $\mathrm{SL}_p$ is equivalent to the $P=W$ conjecture for $\mathrm{GL}_p$. As a consequence, we verify the $P=W$ conjecture for genus 2 and $\mathrm{SL}_p$. For the proof, we compute the perverse filtration and the weight filtration for the variant cohomology associated with the $\mathrm{SL}_p$-Hitchin moduli space and the $\mathrm{SL}_p$-twisted character variety, relying on Gröchenig-Wyss-Ziegler's recent proof of the topological mirror conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus. Finally we discuss obstructions of studying the cohomology of the $\mathrm{SL}_n$-Hitchin moduli space via compact hyper-Kähler manifolds.

Curve counting on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds via derived categories

We prove the elliptic transformation law of Jacobi forms for the generating series of Pandharipande--Thomas invariants of an elliptic Calabi--Yau 3-fold over a reduced class in the base. This proves part of a conjecture by Huang, Katz, and Klemm. For the proof we construct an involution of the derived category and use wall-crossing methods. We express the generating series of PT invariants in terms of low genus Gromov--Witten invariants and universal Jacobi forms. As applications we prove new formulas and recover several known formulas for the PT invariants of $\mathrm{K3} \times E$, abelian 3-folds, and the STU-model. We prove that the generating series of curve counting invariants for $\mathrm{K3} \times E$ with respect to a primitive class on the $\mathrm{K3}$ is a quasi-Jacobi form of weight -10. This provides strong evidence for the Igusa cusp form conjecture.

Perverse filtrations, Hilbert schemes, and the P=W conjecture for parabolic Higgs bundles

We prove de Cataldo-Hausel-Migliorini's P=W conjecture in arbitrary rank for parabolic Higgs bundles labeled by the affine Dynkin diagrams $\tilde{A}_0$, $\tilde{D}_4$, $\tilde{E}_6$, $\tilde{E}_7$, and $\tilde{E}_8$. Our proof relies on the study of the tautological classes on the Hilbert scheme of points on an elliptic surface with respect to the perverse filtration.

K3 categories, one-cycles on cubic fourfolds, and the Beauville-Voisin filtration

We explore the connection between $K3$ categories and 0-cycles on holomorphic symplectic varieties. In this paper, we focus on Kuznetsov's noncommutative $K3$ category associated to a nonsingular cubic 4-fold. By introducing a filtration on the $\mathrm{CH}_1$-group of a cubic 4-fold $Y$, we conjecture a sheaf/cycle correspondence for the associated $K3$ category $\mathcal{A}_Y$. This is a noncommutative analog of O'Grady's conjecture concerning derived categories of $K3$ surfaces. We study instances of our conjecture involving rational curves in cubic 4-folds, and verify the conjecture for sheaves supported on low degree rational curves. Our method provides systematic constructions of (a) the Beauville-Voisin filtration on the $\mathrm{CH}_0$-group and (b) algebraically coisotropic subvarieties of a holomorphic symplectic variety which is a moduli sace of stable objects in $\mathcal{A}_Y$.

Derived categories of K3 surfaces, O'Grady's filtration, and zero-cycles on holomorphic symplectic varieties

Moduli spaces of stable objects in the derived category of a $K3$ surface provide a large class of holomorphic symplectic varieties. In this paper, we study the interplay between Chern classes of stable objects and zero-cycles on holomorphic symplectic varieties which arise as moduli spaces. First, we show that the second Chern class of any object in the derived category lies in a suitable piece of O'Grady's filtration on the $\mathrm{CH}_0$-group of the $K3$ surface. This solves a conjecture of O'Grady and improves on previous results of Huybrechts, O'Grady, and Voisin. Then we propose a candidate of the Beauville-Voisin filtration on the $\mathrm{CH}_0$-group of the moduli space of stable objects. We discuss its connection with Voisin's recent proposal via constant cycle subvarieties. In particular, we deduce the existence of algebraic coisotropic subvarieties in the moduli space. Further, for a generic cubic fourfold containing a plane, we establish a connection between zero-cycles on the Fano variety of lines and on the associated $K3$ surface.

Reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants and the ring of dual numbers

Let $A$ be an abelian variety. We introduce $A$-equivariant Grothendieck rings and $A$-equivariant motivic Hall algebras, and endow them with natural integration maps to the ring of dual numbers. The construction allows a systematic treatment of reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants by Hall algebra techniques. We calculate reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants for $\mathrm{K3} \times E$ and abelian threefolds for several imprimitive curve classes. This verifies (in special cases) multiple cover formulas conjectured by Oberdieck-Pandharipande and Bryan-Oberdieck-Pandharipande-Yin.

Cobordism invariants of the moduli space of stable pairs

For a quasi-projective scheme M which carries a perfect obstruction theory, we construct the virtual cobordism class of M. If M is projective, we prove that the corresponding Chern numbers of the virtual cobordism class are given by integrals of the Chern classes of the virtual tangent bundle. Further, we study cobordism invariants of the moduli space of stable pairs introduced by Pandharipande-Thomas. Rationality of the partition function is conjectured together with a functional equation, which can be regarded as a generalization of the rationality and 1/q <-> q symmetry of the Calabi-Yau case. We prove rationality for nonsingular projective toric 3-folds by the theory of descendents.

On O'Grady's generalized Franchetta conjecture

We study relative zero cycles on the universal polarized $K3$ surface $X \to \mathcal{F}_g$ of degree $2g - 2$. It was asked by O'Grady if the restriction of any class in $\mathrm{CH}^2(X)$ to a closed fiber $X_s$ is a multiple of the Beauville-Voisin canonical class $c_{X_s} \in \mathrm{CH}_0(X_s)$. Using Mukai models, we give an affirmative answer to this question for $g \leq 10$ and $g = 12, 13, 16, 18, 20$.

The Euler characteristics of generalized Kummer schemes

We compute the Euler characteristics of the generalized Kummer schemes associated to $A\times Y$, where $A$ is an abelian variety and $Y$ is a smooth quasi-projective variety. When $Y$ is a point, our results prove a formula conjectured by Gulbrandsen.

Motivic classes of generalized Kummer schemes via relative power structures

We develop a power structure over the Grothendieck ring of varieties relative to an abelian monoid, which allows us to compute the motivic class of the generalized Kummer scheme. We obtain a generalized version of Cheah's formula for the Hilbert scheme of points, which specializes to Gulbrandsen's conjecture for Euler characteristics. Moreover, in the surface case we prove a conjecture of Göttsche for geometrically ruled surfaces, and we obtain an explicit formula for the virtual motive of the generalized Kummer scheme in dimension three.
